• Oprah Gail Winfrey was born January 29, 1954, to unmarried teenage parents in rural Mississippi. She was originally named “Orpah” after the Biblical character in the Book of Ruth. But the inability of her family and friends to pronounce “Orpah” caused them to put the “P” before the “R”, and the “Oprah” version stuck.
maid. Winfrey endured sexual abuse by family members beginning at age nine. She ran away at 13, became pregnant at 14, and suffered through the death of her son shortly after his birth. Her next stop in life was with her father, a Nashville barber, who continually spurred her on to educational excellence. Her life turned around as she became an honors student and earned second place in a national high school speech meet. She won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant at age 17, which was followed by a job with a radio station. By age 19, she was co-anchoring the local evening news.

• Back in 1859, an Arkansas farmer found a strange looking 1,000-pound rock in the Black River and quickly spread the word that he had found a large meteorite. It was moved to the county courthouse in nearby Pocahontas, where it can still be seen today. Years later, geologists from the University of Arkansas carefully examined the rock and, after extensive mineral testing, had to give the community the bad news that it is not a meteorite after all. The curious rock, however, remains quite the tourist attraction just the same.

TIDBITS LOOKS AT
ALCATRAZ Although most famous for the 29 years it was a maximum security penitentiary for some of America’s most hardened criminals, Alcatraz was first a military fortress. Tidbits explores this San Franciso landmark, which receives over a million visitors each year. • Alcatraz Island was named by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775, when he was on a landmark-mapping mission. He called the rocky mass “Isla de los Alcatraces,” which translates “Island of the Pelicans,” because they were its only inhabitants and in great number. • U.S. military troops began using the island in 1850, a fort was built, and by 1859, there were permanent troops stationed there to defend the San Francisco Bay area. In 1854, the island’s lighthouse went into service as the first on the Pacific coast. • In 1861, Alcatraz became the official military prison for the Department of the Pacific and confined military deserters, thieves and drunkards. Civilians accused of treason were imprisoned there during the Civil War, as well as a crew of Confederate privateers whose ship had been seized in the Bay. In 1915, The Rock was designated the “United States Disciplinary Barracks” and remained a military prison until 1934.

Eric Winter, 34, plays the dashing young FBI agent on the hit CBS show. Previously, Eric was best known for his work on “Days of Our Lives,” “Moonlight” and “Brothers and Sisters.” The recent movie you’re referring to is “The Ugly Truth,” with Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, which Eric said was a Eric Winter thrill to work on. “That was just a huge opportunity that (director) Robert Luketic and Lakeshore gave me,” he told me recently. “And it was really awesome; I had such a blast working with those guys. And my relationship with Katie (Heigl) and Gerry (Butler) was a ton of fun. It was a huge opportunity. It was kind of a fun, vulgar romantic comedy -- it changes up from the normal romantic-comedy pace that you’re used to.” As far as O’Laughlin’s relationship with Van Pelt: “From what I understand, they plan on doing a slow burn. Whatever happens between the two of us is definitely going to play its course. But there’s a lot to do with my character aside from that relationship. I’m not in the writing room, so I don’t know. But I know they have it well worked out, and they’ve been great with me so far.”

HANDYMAN SERVICES & HOME REPAIR
Cats, Dogs and Other People By Matthew Margolis
Teach, Don’t Bully It is a well-known mathematical fact that two wrongs don’t equal a right. Lesser known is the surprising notion that one doesn’t, either. The following letter from a reader culminates with the explosive assertion of a single disturbing wrong: “I just got this dog from the pound. She eats well and sleeps with me, and she’s very intelligent. But she keeps leaving me little poops and puddles in the house. I leave the door open and she still poops in the house, right by an open door. She is 4 years old or so, and the pound has no history on her. I have not beaten her yet, but I am about to. Brute force is never an effective teaching tool. Most people, if told their child’s eye had been blackened not by a bully but by his English teacher because of his inability to spell, would run to the nearest happy hour full of ACLU lawyers and scream “civil rights violation! And the teacher’s defense would be embarrassingly lackluster: “No, I never taught him how to spell, but I left the dictionary right there on his desk. Dogs are not born housebroken. It is not a matter of better breeding, bad genes or big bucks. To date, with all that modern technology affords we humans and our canine counterparts, no breeder has been able to deliver into the world an inherently pottytrained dog. Or child. If you want your dog to perform his bodily functions out ofproduction doors, you have to let him know that. 1 MIN: 45 HRS: This is done through training. Training is essentialstamp ly the creation of a shared, albeit limited, language AdVenture Media between man and beast. The good news is that housebreaking is easy to achieve and takes less than a week to accomplish. The bad news is that a lot of people would prefer not to make even that minimal effort. Unfortunately, the headache that results packs enough of a wallop to HANDYMAN lead a person down the wrong path -- toward abuse, SERVICES squalor and abandonment. The basics of housebreaking boil down to the regulation of three components: food, water and walks. If you and your pooch are steadfast in your adherence to what I call the Feed-Water-Walk regimen, he’ll catch on remarkably fast: He eats and drinks at the same times every day, and he relieves himself outside immediately after. Your role? You provide the food and water at the same times every day, and you take him outside immediately after -- simply leaving the door open is not TidbitsŽ of Coachella Valley

Avastin Drug Studies Alter FDA’s Approval
use. Why would a doctor want to use a drug that has been shown to be of no proven benefit and has serious side effects? One possibility is that he may disagree with the new findings based on his review of the earlier studies that did show benefit. Alternately, he may be persuaded by his experience that some patients he treated with the drug showed a dramatic response with a longer and better life. Researchers will say anecdotal information like this is meaningless. But in the case of cancer where choices are small and life expectancy is short, to a desperate patient, a one in a million chance may be better than no chance at all. What should the patient do? And who are they to believe: a doctor they trust or information that is very difficult to understand? Needless to say this creates confusion, difficulties and consternation for very ill patients and their families. And anger and resentment are common if insurance companies refuse to pay. For all these reasons, the patient must be given unvarnished information on the benefits and disadvantages of any treatment, the presence of alternate approaches (and in the case of breast cancer there are many), and concrete evidence as to whether the treatment will prolong or improve the quality of life. In the case of Avastin for advanced breast cancer, the patient must be told Ad that Proof: recent studies show no value and extensive side effects. In consultation Wheels to the World with the person’s doctor, the patient can make as educated a choice as 1/16th page Black and White possible as to whether the risks are worth it. CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) good enough. To help matters along: -- Lay down no paper or puppy pads on the floor in any part of your house, as this will only confuse your pup. -- Confine the dog to one area of the house when you are not home. -- Allow no buffet-style eating or drinking until the dog is successfully housebroken. Should an accident occur along the way, proceed in one of two ways: -- If you catch your pup in the act, interrupt him with a verbal correction, take him outside immediately and praise him when you get there. Then go inside and clean the soiled floor with an odor neutralizer. -- If you stumble upon an accident, clean it up and forget about it. Accidents should be infrequent if you are upholding your end of the deal. Consistent repetition is the key to successful training, and housebreaking is no exception. Beating a dog, on the other hand, will get you nowhere -- except the courthouse or the clink. For detailed information on the Feed-Water-Walk housebreaking regimen and additional training techniques, check out “Good Dog, Bad Dog,” “When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” and “I Just Got a Puppy. What Do I Do?” You’ll find these books and more in your local bookstore, public library or at www.unclematty.com. Woof!
Despite a great deal of national attention, there is still much dissent and confusion about how to treat breast cancer. A new controversy involves treating advanced cancer with Avastin, a drug that prevents tumors from forming blood vessels. Impaired blood vessel formation either slows or stops tumor growth. Initial research showed that in combination with other drugs, Avastin prolonged the life of patients with breast cancer that had spread throughout the body. With greater use of the drug, new studies have shown that Avastin is of no benefit, does not prolong life, and risks outweigh any benefits. Side effects include stroke, bowel perforations and difficulties with healing. The drug also causes swelling of the brain, which leading to high blood pressure, blindness, confusion and seizures. Lupus Is Related to Rheumatoid Arthritis
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 66. I had been a heavy smoker, and I had a brother who died of an abdominal aneur ysm. My doctor insisted I have an ultrasound of my abdomen to find out if I had one. (He thought he felt one.) It turns out I don’t have an aneur ysm, but I do have a porcelain gallbladder. The doctor wants me to have surger y right away. I have no pain. I feel good. He says it’s a cancer threat. Is this so? -- M.Z.

Q:
How do we stay grounded and calm through the barrage of information we get daily from the media? We seem to get entirely different slants on the news depending on what we watch or read. It’s hard to know who or what to believe anymore. The one thing the radio, TV and newspapers have in common is that it’s all bad news! Isn’t there any good news to report anymore? It never used to be this way.

They specialize in images of horses and domestic pets, which are created with great attention to detail. Your pitcher was also available in other colors. Q:
Would you consider my old butterchurn crock an antique or junque? Marked on the front are the words: “Red Wing -- 5 -- Union Stoneware Co.” Also, there are two leaves on the front. Standing 17 inches tall, it’s in excellent condition with its original lid and handle.
A:
Union Stoneware Co. was located in Red Wing, Minn. They not only made butter churns, but they also produced a plethora of other crocks, all extremely collectible. The two leaves are birch leaves, and “5” refers to the size of the crock, meaning it holds 5 gallons. Union Stoneware Co. is no longer in business. Recently, I saw a similar butter churn in an antiques mall selling for $185, which was a steal. As a rule, most sell in the range of $300 to $500. Your butter churn was made around the turn of the last century and is definitely not junque. * * *

Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
