They were there when Hurricane Katrina hit the city in 2005, and most of their belongings were destroyed when their house was ravaged by floodwaters. “The hurricane flooded me out of a lot of memorabilia,” he said, “but it can’t flood out the memories.” • Dempsey loves to watch the New Orleans Saints play and is thrilled with their success in recent years. Most of the time, he watches alone from home and only his wife is there with him. He says that is fine, “provided she doesn’t talk!” ■

Watch Your Step! Depending on how you look at them, stairs can either be a nuisance or a great way to get your exercise. Some use them as a way to give their their thighs and calves a good workout, while others take them only when the elevator isn’t working. Whatever your reasons for using them, let’s take a look at a few of the most interesting and unusual staircases in the world. • You’ll find one of the most famous staircases at the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley of France. It is a double spiral staircase that surprisingly allows two people to climb without ever crossing paths, even though they can see each other. This Château was built as a hunting lodge for Francois I starting in 1518, using 1,800 workers and taking 15 years to finish. There are 440 rooms and 365 fireplaces! • If you have ever been to Rome, you probably went to “The Spanish Steps,” built from 1723-1725. These 138 stone steps lead from the Piazza di Spagna to the hill of the Pincio and the church of Trinita dei Monti at the top. The funds for the Spanish steps came from the French, and keep in mind that Rome is in Italy! This staircase is the longest and widest in Europe and a great gathering place for tourists and locals. • Probably the world’s most photographed staircase is also found in Italy. The spiral staircase that leads from street level up to the Vatican Museums in Vatican City was designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932. This staircase consists of two intertwined spirals; one leading up and the other down. • Some stairs that were an exit point for many slaves from Africa are on Goree Island off the coast of Senegal. An estimated 26,000 of the 12 million slaves taken from Africa are believed to have passed through the island between 1670 Precision and the late Weight 1700s. Loss Jan. 16, 2011 V7: #3 • 1/12 Did you pg.,know 4C, that 26xthere is a festival for winding stairs? Traer, Iowa, is home to the Famous Winding Stairs on Second Street and holds an Corrections due by: 12 pm, Wed., 1/12/11 annual festival the third weekend in August (August 12-13, 2011). The iron staircase was built in 1894 when E.E. Taylor built a new

building for the town’s newspaper. Since the building and lot were narrow, he chose to have an outside staircase built to the newspaper offices on the second floor. In 1916, when the town voted to widen the sidewalks, the stairs were moved to the curb and a catwalk was added to connect them to the upstairs entrance. The staircase, catwalk and attached building are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. • In October 2010, Bellevue, Washington, was the site of an inaugural fundraising event, “The Fight for Air Climb,” for the American Lung Association. Hailed as the longest multibuilding stair-climb event in the United States, it took place at Bellevue Towers, the city’s newest high-rise condominiums, which has two towers, each 45 stories tall. For the climb, the options were for climbing 45, 91 or 182 stories, which translated into 800, 1,621 or 3,242 stairs. Participants climbed up and were rushed down in express elevators. • San Francisco has many stairs built into its steep hills to aid walkers. In August 2005, a special mosaic staircase was unveiled at 16th Avenue and Moraga. The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps project was a huge undertaking conceived and fabricated by ceramicist Aileen Barr and mosaic artist Colette Crutcher. Considered the world’s longest mosaic staircase, there are 163 steps made from over 2,000 handmade tiles plus many fragments of tile, mirror and stained glass. • Unquestionably, the most unusual staircase and the one with the most mysterious history is the wooden spiral staircase of the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The brick and stone chapel was constructed in 1877 using plans drawn by French architect Antoine Mouly, who died suddenly soon after construction began. It wasn’t until construction was nearly complete that the builders realized that no provision had been made for a staircase leading to the choir loft. Due to the chapel’s small size, a standard staircase would have been too large. • Faced with the problem, the nuns prayed for nine straight days for the Lord to send a solution. On the ninth day a shabby looking

stranger appeared at their door with a donkey and a tool box, identifying himself only as a carpenter looking for work. He told the nuns he would build them a staircase, but to do so he needed total privacy. He locked himself in the chapel with only a small number of primitive tools including a square, a saw and some warm water. When his work was finished three months later, he was gone before the nuns could thank him or give him his pay. When they entered the chapel and saw the staircase he had built they were astounded. • The staircase is an impressive work of masterful c a r p e n t r y. Rising twenty two feet from the floor, it makes two complete turns up to the choir loft without the use of nails or any center support. It is Spiral staircase at Loretto Chapel made of wood not found anywhere in New Mexico or in the entire region. The construction is flawless and perfectly fitted using only dowels and wooden pegs. The stairs have 33 steps, the number of years that Jesus lived on earth. The nuns felt it was a miracle, and some believed the carpenter was St. Joseph himself. • The mystery of the Loretto Chapel staircase has never been satisfactorily solved. No one knows who the carpenter was, where he came from or where he got his lumber. Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
Reverse Mortgages Have Pros and Cons Dear Mary: My husband keeps talking about doing a reverse mortgage on our home. He is just about convinced that it’s what we should do, but I am not entirely sold® on the idea. I have heard you really have to do the math before doing this or by you Mary might Hunt regret it. He is 63 and on Social Security disability. I am 55 and work full time. I value your opinion and would like your advice. -- Kathy, Missouri
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
Dear Kathy: A reverse mortgage is a tool that offers a wonderful solution for some people who find themselves in a financial pickle once they no longer are working. But it shouldn’t be your first option. To qualify for a reverse mortgage, you must be at least 62 years old, own your home outright (or owe so little that you could pay it off easily with the proceeds of the reverse mortgage) and be living in the home. Unlike the case with a conventional mortgage, there are no income requirements to get these loans other than proving that you own the property. When the last borrower moves out or
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
dies, the house is sold and the loan becomes due. If there is money left after paying off the reverse mortgage, it will go to your heirs. Generally, you will have access to a portion of your equity (there are formulas based on your age, the market value of the home and so forth), either as a lump sum or as monthly payments to you. You can stay in the house as long as you’d like, even after you have gone through all of the equity available to you, provided you continue to pay the property taxes. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? You get to stay in your home, have access to all that cash equity you’ve been building up over the years, and make no monthly payments. But before you get too excited, let’s look at the drawbacks. First, the fees and loan costs for a reverse mortgage can be very high. Next, it is easy to spend through a lot of cash when it appears to be so free and easy. Remember that your expenses could increase dramatically in the years ahead should you require assisted living. Is a reverse mortgage the ideal finance tool for all elders? Not likely. However, if things were to get to the point that you are really strapped for cash and healthy enough to care for yourselves in your home, a reverse mortgage could be the ideal solution. * * * Dear Mary: What are your thoughts on purchasing a home warranty? We had one when we bought our home two years ago. I used it once but did not renew it. Do you think having a home warranty is a wise idea? I can renew it if I want. What do you advise? -- Rebecca, Louisiana
Page 7
Dear Rebecca: I probably would purchase a home warranty policy for the first couple of years after purchasing the home, simply because of things that slip past that initial home inspection or cannot be seen. However, after that first contract, I probably would not renew it unless I were aware of things that would be covered and could fail in the future. Do you have a question for Mary? E-mail her at mary@ everydaycheapskate.com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, P.O. Box 2135, Paramount, CA 90723. A lot of people say they got a dog for protection. But do those people know the difference between protection and aggression? Barking at anyone who comes into your yard or house is not protection. Charging the mailman is not protection. Snarling at passers-by from that coveted spot at the front window is not protection. Growling at or biting family members and friends is certainly not protection. So what is? A protection dog will recognize a potentially lifethreatening situation and act to prevent it. This kind of recognition requires training to develop, as does the dog’s ability to respond reliably and appropriately to the situation. Anything less is simply aggression. Aggression is an overreaction. It’s a form of imbalance. An aggressive dog responds to stimuli, however innocuous, without reason or logic. He’s irrational, out of control, unpredictable and even dangerous. I recently spoke with a couple whose dog bit their production upstairs neighbor’s child. Their response? “He didn’t mean it. He misread the signs, and his response was grossly inappropriate. With a dog like this, the question becomes: How do you prevent unpredictable behavior? “He doesn’t do it all the time.” I hear this all the time. It just underscores the challenge of making safe an unpredictable dog. If he did it all the time, it would be predictable, and you could, in that case, desensitize the animal to those tried-and-true triggers. “He doesn’t do it all the time” is by no means a good thing. When it comes to aggressive behavior, that he does it at all should be cause to call in a professional. If diagnosed with a stroke, it is important to get to the hospital immediately. If it’s caused by a blood clot, immediate treatment with the drug tissue-type plasminogen activator (TPA) can dissolve the clot, leading to an improved prognosis and less long-term disabilities. Once reaching the emergency room, a CT scan or MRI is immediately needed to diagnose that a blood clot is the cause of the stroke. Using a CT scan, an interventional radiologist or neurologist guides a catheter through the carotid artery and into the affected brain artery, so the TPA can be infused. To be effective, the infusion must begin within three hours of the first symptom of the stroke. Unfortunately, researchers at Yale University have shown that only 37 percent reach the emergency room early enough for the TPA to be effective. Recently published in the journal Stroke, research has shown that 62 percent of Medicare patients diagnosed with a stroke will either die or be readmitted to the hospital within a year. Of those admitted to a hospital following the stroke, 14 percent die within a month and 30 percent more die within the first year. During the first days after the stroke, the risk of death ranged from 9 percent in top-performing hospitals to 18 percent in those hospitals where outcomes were the worst. Interestingly, being designated as a major stroke center did not appear to affect readmission or death rates within a year. Symptoms of a stroke should not be ignored -- either call 911 or get to an emergency room as soon as possible. Early warning signs of a stroke include: sudden weakness or numbness in an arm or leg on one side of the body, loss of the ability to speak or walk, difficulties with balance, dizziness or sudden onset of confusion. On occasion, a severe headache can be a harbinger of a stroke. But the diagnosis is more likely to be caused by a cerebral bleed rather than a blocked artery. Sometimes symptoms may only last a few minutes and completely resolve. The cause is a blockage of a smaller artery that causes transient symptoms. Referred to as a transient ischemic attack or TIA, this is often a warning sign of an impending stroke. If these symptoms occur, Some things are just it’s essential to get an immediate evaluation, usutoo good ally in an emergency room.to change... Evaluation of a TIA usually involves a CT or MRI of the brain to determine if there has been blockage of small brain arteries as well as scans of both carotid arteries to determine if they are narrowed. If blocked by more than 70 percent, intervention to open the blockage significantly reduces stroke risk. An evaluation of the heart is needed to determine if atrial fibrillation is present, in which case anticoagulation with the blood thinner Coumadin is prescribed. Patients with atrial fibrillation develop blood clots in their hearts that can break off and go to the brain -- where blockage of a blood vessel can lead to a major stroke. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
Page 11
that would come with a 32 percent delayed retirement bonus. However, you’d have to recognize that you’re taking a bit of a gamble if you do that. You’d be throwing away four year’s worth of higher benefits on your own Social Security record -- hoping that you’ll live long enough after age 70 to come out ahead with the bonus payments.
Q:
Follow-Up Questions from Woman’s Guide Fact Sheet Q:
I read your woman’s guide to Social Security. In it, you said that I wouldn’t be able to get any of my husband’s Social Security if my own benefit is higher than his amount. But in another fact sheet where you wrote about maximizing one’s Social Security, you said that I could take part of my husband’s Social Security at 66 and then delay my own until 70. Can I do that even when my Social Security is higher than my husband’s benefit?
A:
I am 65 and have been getting Social Security for a couple of years. My wife is 63 and still working. She plans to work until she is 66. But her brother has advised her to retire now and take her Social Security right away. He said she could get her own benefit and half of mine. Is this true?
A:
No, it’s not true. The Social Security Administration almost always pays a woman her own retirement benefit first. Then they look to see if that payment can be supplemented with any extra benefits from a spouse’s record. Because your wife is only 63 and under her “full retirement age,” that supplement could only be about 40 percent of your retirement benefit. So, your brother-in-law is wrong. She cannot get half of your Social Security (at her current age), and she definitely cannot get half of your Social Security and her own retirement benefit.
Q:
My wife recently passed away. I am 68. About five years ago, I applied for Social Security and she started getting wife’s benefits on my record because she didn’t have enough work credits to get her own Social Security. I was under the impression that my benefits were reduced when she went on my record. So when she died, I expected my benefits to go back up. But they didn’t. How come? Also, I didn’t get any funeral benefits from Social Security for her. Was this correct?
Security benefit.
Q:
I am a 62-year-old divorced woman who recently started working following many years as a housewife and mother. I read your Social Security guide for women, and it said I could get wife’s benefits from my ex-husband’s record. (We were married for almost 40 years.) But when I called the Social Security office to apply, they said I’m not eligible. I was so confused and disappointed that I didn’t really understand why I wasn’t allowed to file for my ex’s Social Security. Do you know why?
A:
My hunch is due to your work and earnings. As I explained in the woman’s guide to Social Security, a woman getting benefits as a wife or widow (or divorced wife or widow) is subjected to the same earnings penalties that apply to retirees. In a nutshell, those rules say that if you are under age 66 and still working, your Social Security benefits must be reduced by $1 for every $2 you make over $14,160 per year. So, depending on how much more than $14,160 you’re earning per year, you’re probably not due any Social Security benefits on anyone’s record until you retire or turn 66. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast. net. Yes, you can. And this is yet another exCOPYRIGHT 2011 CREATORS.COM. ample of the “ifs ands or buts” of Social Security law that I write about all the time. In the woman’s guide fact sheet, I correctly wrote that normally a woman who gets a higher retirement benefit than her husband cannot expect to get any supplemental benefits as a spouse on his record. In fact, in that scenario, the husband might be due some supplemental husband’s or widower’s benefits on his wife’s Social Security account. But it is also true that if a person waits until Your Social Security benefits were NOT reage 66 to claim Social Security benefits, he or she duced because your wife was getting spousal benTUES., JAN. 18 can temporarily waive eligibility to his or her own efits on your record. Dear Doug

Record Your Story Q:
I was emptying out a storage closet as we were cleaning house to move when I rediscovered a book written by a cousin who documented our family’s histor y. Among other interesting things, he described how our family had managed to sur vive famine, war, sickness and poverty. It is fascinating reading! I realized that no one in my generation has accepted the responsibility of updating our ancestr y. I am now in my 60s and newly retired. I realize that if I don’t update our ancestr y, no one else will. What is the best way to get this done?
A: First, you need to be motivated to get started
have broached the idea with his family, but he shows little interest. He says he would prefer to stay home and “hang” with his friends. How can we convince him that this is a great opportunity and he sould take advantage of it?
A:
Teenagers need prodding because of their inexperience and the fact that they feel more secure in a familiar environment. They don’t like to leave their comfort zone. Don’t give up on him. You still have time. Tell him how you learned more about yourself and even your own country by traveling and observing other cultures. Share your photos, books and stories about your travel experiences. Rent interesting travel movies and introduce him to the differences in currency and sports activities. It might take a little time to convince him how fortunate he is to have this opportunity. We enjoyed taking our grandson, who was also 13 at the time, on our trip to Alaska. He was not too enthused about taking a trip with his grandparents, but that soon changed once we arrived. What a great adventure he had hiking mountain trails, getting an up-close look at whales, riding in a dog-driven Iditarod sled, and landing in a helicopter on a glacier! Upon his return he wrote an essay about his vacation as a school assignment, complete with pictures he had taken himself, and got an “A” for it. Emphasize that this may be the only chance he may ever have to travel to Europe (especially for free!). Buy him a camera now, so he can learn to use it before your trip. Convince him that his friends will be envious of his adventurous travels when he gets back, and he’ll be a popular guy. That should do it!
and it certainly sounds like you are. Now it is simply a matter of getting your story on paper. The computer has made it much easier to get your thoughts onto the printed page -- or even write a book. I use a voice recognition software program called “Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11” (www.nuance.com). You do not have to type. Simply speak into a headset, and your computer instantly types your spoken words. How easy is that? To begin, schedule a half-hour per day for your writing. ● On Feb. 5, 1878, Andre Citroen, later referred to as the Henry Ford of France for developing his country’s first massproduced automobiles, is born in Paris. Citroen allowed potential customers to take his vehicles for a test drive -- then a new concept -- and also let people buy on credit. ● On Feb. 4, 1938, Walt Disney releases “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” his first full-length animated color feature. Naysayers warned Disney that audiences wouldn’t sit through a feature-length cartoon fantasy about dwarfs. In June 2008, the American Film Institute chose it as the No. 1 animated film of all time. ● On Feb. 3, 1959, rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson are killed when their small plane crashes in an Iowa cornfield. Singer Don McLean memorialized the musicians in the 1972 hit “American Pie,” which refers to “the day the music died.” ● On Feb. 1, 1974, Ted Bundy kills his second victim, marking Bundy as a serial killer. That summer Bundy attacked at least seven young women in Washington. He was caught in 1977 in Florida and eventually confessed to 36 murders. He was executed in 1989. ● On Feb. 2, 1980, details of ABSCAM, an FBI operation to uncover political corruption in the government, are released to the public. Thirty-one public officials were targeted for investigation. In the operation, FBI agents posed as representatives of Abdul Enterprises, Ltd., a fictional business owned by an Arab sheik.

● On Feb. 6, 1820, the first organized immigration of freed slaves from the United States departs New York harbor on a journey to West Africa. The immigration was largely the work of the American Colonization Society. However, the expedition also was partially funded by the U.S. Congress, which appropriated $100,000 to be used in returning displaced Africans.
● On Jan. 31, 1990, the Soviet Union’s first McDonald’s fast-food restaurant opens in Moscow. Throngs of people line up to pay the equivalent of several days’ wages for Big Macs, shakes and french fries.

Deep fairway rough When you find yourself in deep fairway rough, it is tempting to take a longer iron or fairway wood and try to hit it as far as humanly possible. But the smarter and safer approach is to just get it back into the fairway and set yourself up for your next shot. So the next time you are in deep fairway rough, here are a few things to consider:

• Make sure you use a club with enough loft. You don’t want to use anything more than an 8-iron. This ensure you can get the club face to the ball with enough loft to get it out of the rough. • Open the club face slightly when you set up to the ball. At impact the heel of the club tends to get caught up in the grass, causing the club face to shut down a bit, causing the ball to go left. By opening the club face at address you are allowing for this. • Set up with your weight slightly on your front leg, play the ball back in your stance, and open your stance just a bit. All of this promotes a steeper swing, helping the club face strike the ball first instead of getting caught up in the heavy grass. • Grip the club slightly firmer than usual to ensure the club doesn’t come loose in your hands at impact. Keep these factors in mind when you find yourself in deep fairway rough and you will get yourself out more easily and consistently. TINA MICHELSON, PGA
