All kinds of famous folks were born during the month of January. This week, Tidbits brings you a few more details about these well-known people who have a January birthday. • Showman P.T. Barnum was responsible for discovering four-year-old Charles Sherwood Stratton in 1842 and promoting him as General Tom Thumb, the world’s best-known “midget.” Barnum was reportedly a distant relative (“half fifth cousin, twice removed”) of the tiny boy, and taught him to sing, dance, mime and do impersonations.

At age 25, Stratton married the 32-inch-tall, 29-pound Lavinia Warren in a lavish ceremony in New York City. U.S. Supreme Court declared the laws requiring segregation on buses to be unconstitutional. • Most people have heard of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech given in 1963, but what exactly was his dream? One of his dreams was “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’”
Martin Luther King This week, Tidbits honors Nobel Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., jailed more than 20 times, criticized and assaulted numerous times over, and ultimately giving his life for his courageous leadership in the civil rights movement. • Born January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King’s birth name was Michael Luther King Jr. He was named after his father, who was also Michael. When the family traveled to Europe and visited Germany in 1934, they were greatly moved by the history surrounding the German Protestent movement led by Martin Luther. Michael Sr. decided to have both of their names changed to Martin in honor of this great leader and his courage against tremendous opposition. • Martin Jr. was an exceptionally bright and gifted student and always excelled in every phase of his academic studies. He skipped the ninth and twelfth grades and enrolled at Atlanta’s Morehouse College at the young age of 15. At 19, he had already earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in sociology. He transferred to a Pennsylvania theological seminary, where he was elected president of his predominantly white class. • At age 25, King became pastor of Montgomery, Alabama’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. The following year began the first of his many civil rights activities, beginning with the 385-day Montgomery Bus Boycott. In this movement he organized the black community in a collective protest against segregation on the city’s bus lines. One result of the nationally publicized boycott was the arrest of Rosa Parks, a black bus rider who refused Loss to give up her seat when a Precision Weight Jan. 2011 V7: #3 white16, man demanded it. 1/12 pg., 4C, 26x

his plane. He delivered his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech on April 3. The next evening, as he stood on the balcony of his hotel, a bullet fired by James Earl Ray struck King and within an hour, the civil rights leader was dead. That establishment, the Lorraine Motel, is now the location of the National Civil Rights Museum. •
King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986. ■
• Also in 1963, King wrote his “letter from a Birmingham jail”, which he penned while incarcerated in an Alabama jail cell following his arrest for leading a huge non-violent protest against racial segregation. He reminded his readers, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” As a result of the year’s activities, King was named “Man of the Year” by Time magazine.

Don’t you worry -- you’re in for another season of gun slinging when “Justified” returns for its sophomore season on Wednesday, Feb. 9, on FX. Not only will Timothy return as U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens, we’ll also see some new faces. They will all play members of the Bennett family, the biggest pot farmers in eastern Kentucky. ***

Can you tell me if the show “Medium” has for sure been canceled, or is there a chance they’ll keep it running? -- Frankie T., via e-mail
A:
The struggling drama starring Patricia Arquette and Jake Weber has indeed been canceled for the second time. The first time was in 2009, when NBC dropped the show from its schedule and CBS picked it up. But CBS recently announced that it had reduced season seven’s episodes from 22 to 13, with the series finale airing on Friday, Jan. 21. ***

Bankruptcy Fraud and a Trip to The Big House
Everyday Dear Mary: After filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, what is a person entitled to own? A car? CHEAPSKATE A house? -- Frieda, Illinois ®
by Mary Hunt
Dear Frieda: I know of no ongoing restrictions once a Chapter 7 filing has been completed. I suppose you can own anything that you can pay for or for which you can get a loan. The problem is that the bankruptcy will be reported on your credit report for 10 years. You will have a hard time qualifying for loans at rates you can afford, because your credit score will be trashed. There are restrictions for how much of what you own you can keep once the bankruptcy filing has been completed. Each state has its own bankruptcy laws, so you need to check with your state for details. Don’t be surprised to find that everything you own going into bankruptcy is subject to liquidation to pay your creditors. I need to tell you that it is a federal crime to lie about what you own, to hide assets or to attempt to shield anything of value from the bankruptcy court.

Cats, Dogs and Other People By Matthew Margolis
Resolution No. 1: No More Denial The word “acceptance” gets a bad rap. Acceptance is not resignation. It’s not defeatist or complacent. Acceptance is powerful and progressive -- a symbol that marks that point in time when a person seizes control of their life. Acceptance is the antidote to denial. Denial fuels paralysis. It destroys relationships, drains bank accounts, limits potential, inhibits progress, wreaks havoc on our health and leaves questionable politicians in power for far too long. And it’s certainly no way to deal with a dog. An acquaintance of mine is having trouble with his neighbors -- if you ask him. If you ask them, they’re having trouble with his dogs. I asked him what the problem was, and he said, “My neighbors say my dogs bark when I’m not home, but I don’t think they do.” Not “but I know they don’t because I recorded them while I was out.” Not “but I know they don’t because I pretended to leave and then caught the neighbor red-handed provoking my dogs.” Nope. For him it was enough to simply deny the possibility outright and assume his neighbors are lying. The irony is that he is an elementary-school teacher. Noproduction one is more familiar with the frustrations of denial than a teacher of young children. HRS: 1 MIN: 45 “Thank you for coming in, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Your son hid astamp dead squirrel in my desk drawer toAdVenture Media day.” “Oh, our Bobby would never do that.” Barking is a behavioral problem that frequently gets blown all out of proportion because of denial. Yes, barking is communication, it’s natural, it’s protection. But it’s also annoying and disruptive when excessive. Barking isn’t the problem. Excessive barking is the problem. And if your dog is accused, the first step should be determining whether he is an excessive barker. If so, there are a multitude of options available to help manage or cure the problem behavior. But if we’re too busy denying it exists, they’ll be of little help. The simple truth is that training your dog is a whole lot easier than dealing with all of the longterm difficulties denial ultimately presents: cold wars with neighbors, legal battles, court fees, time CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10 Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

Annual Exams Crucial For Even Hale Boomers Many of my baby boomer friends seem to be the picture of good health -- they eat right and exercise often. In fact, they are so healthy that they take pride in never seeing a physician. This is a terrible mistake. With each passing year, regular medical checkups are the cornerstone of good health -- in fact, the healthier you are, the more vigilant you must be about seeing your doctor. With the Health Care Reform Act, the federal government has placed a greater emphasis on preventive health, expanding Medicare’s “Wellness Visit” from a one-time offer to an annual checkup. In order to take full advantage of this new benefit, it is vitally important that everyone understand what should be expected in an annual medical exam. First, in order to be considered a “wellness checkup,” you should state that the visit’s purpose is for general health and that you have no major new complaints or medical problems. For example, if you see the doctor because of a sudden onset of severe back pain and ask for the wellness visit at the same time, some insurance may decline the claim. Simply put, do not wait until you are sick to have your annual physical. As a general rule, the annual physical should take about 30 to 40 minutes either with your doctor or, as in the case of Medicare, by other health care providers, such as physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists and clinical social workers. Working under the supervision of a physician, health educators, dietitians and nutrition specialists can also be involved. Your doctor should carefully evaluate all your chronic medical conditions, which may include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or arthritis. Medications should be documented and analyzed, as should medical problems, surgeries and any hospital admissions you may have had in the past. The physician should also assess your family history, including whether your parents are still alive. If not, what was the cause of death? Do you have brothers and sisters and are they healthy? How many children do you have? Are your children

Social too Security write ayou column •Every SameJanuary, BeautifulI Music know similar and loveto this one.•But I don’t mind plagiarizing myself because it Same pleasing format contains a very important message for people planning•toFamiliar retire inon-air 2011.personalities January is a critical month for the hundreds of streaming stereobeneficiaries on thousandsLive of potential SocialinSecurity who are reaching their so-called full retirement age in 2011. The important message: All of them should at least consider the possibility of filing for their benefits this month, even though they may not be reaching their retirement age until later in the year. The reason for this early filing time frame has to do with some quirky and complicated features of Social Security’s earnings penalty provisions. Those provisions generally keep seniors who are still working off of Social Security’s rolls until they reach that magic “full retirement age.” For most people reading this column, your full retirement age is probably 66. Check out the Social Security Administration’s website at www.socialsecurity.gov for a chart listing the various full retirement ages. The law essentially says if you are working full time, are older than 62 and are under your full retirement age, you are not eligible for Social Security. Specifically, the rules require that the SSA deduct $1 from any retirement benefits you might be due for every $2 you earn over $14,160 in 2011. However, the rules say that once you reach your full retirement age, you are due full Social Security benefits, even if you are still working. And it doesn’t matter how much money you are making.

ment age of 66 in July 2011. And let’s further say Ed generally makes about $60,000 per year and plans to continue working indefinitely. Based on the earnings penalty rules I briefly outlined above, Ed figures he must wait until July (his full retirement age) to begin collecting his Social Security benefits. As I said, at that magical point, the earnings penalty rules no longer apply and he can get his Social Security. And prior to that, he’s making way more than the $14,160 income threshold. But here is why Ed should check into applying for Social Security in January. Congress set up a more lenient earnings threshold for the year that you reach your full retirement age. Specifically, it says justJanuary and the you canSome earn up things to $37,680are between month you reach your full retirement age. And that’s under the $37,680 threshold for 2011, which means Ed is due benefits beginning Live streaming in stereo on in January. He does NOT have to wait until July to apply for his Social Security checks. There is a bit of a catch. By starting his benefits in January, Ed will be accepting a slightly reduced amount. Benefits are reduced roughly one-half of 1 percent for each month they are taken before full retirement age. If Ed’s Social Security benefit at full retirement age is $2,000 per month, let’s look at his options. Ed’s first option is to wait until July (his full retirement age) to start his Social Security benefits. He’ll get $2,000 per month for six months or $12,000 for the year 2011. Ed’s second option is to file for Social Security in January. Starting his benefits slightly early, his
Page 11
monthly rate is reduced to $1,940. That comes out to $23,280 in total benefits for the year 2011. The downside to option No. 2 is his ongoing monthly benefit rate will be $1,940 -- $60 less than what he would have been getting in option No. 1. But because he’d be getting about $11,000 less in total 2011 benefits in option No. 1, it would take Ed a long time to make up that loss with his extra $60 per month in ongoing benefits. If I were Ed, I’d choose the second option. I know these rules are complicated and the math in the above examples can be difficult to follow. But my overall message is easy to follow: If you’re reaching age 66 in 2011, talk to a Social Security representative sometime this month to find out if it’s to your advantage to file for those benefits in January. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast. net. Celluloid vanity sets were popular in the early 1900s.

Thirty years ago, my mother gave me an antique desk. I only know that it belonged to my great-grandmother in the 1890s. It is a Victorian Wooton desk made of American walnut. The height is 6 feet and the width is 3 feet. The quality and the condition are still in great shape. I would appreciate any information you can provide about my desk.
A:
Wooton desks were made in the late 1800s in Indianapolis. If you can document yours as an authentic Wooton desk, it would probably be worth at least $10,000. Some can sell in the six-figure range. If it’s in the style of Wooten, the value would be much lower, probably in the range of $1,500 to $2,500. * * *

JANUARY BABIES (from page page 3) players, enabling him to play on junior teams as a youngster at a level far above his peers. Gretzky is considered the greatest hockey player in the history of the NHL. He is the holder of 61 various records, including the only player to score over 200 points in one season, something he did four times. • Over the course of his career, from 1979 to 1999, Gretzky played for four NHL teams — the Edmonton Oilers, L.A. Kings, St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. His No. 99 jersey has been retired league-wide and is only the second number in all sports to earn that privilege. Following his retirement, Gretzky coached and co-owned NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes for four years, ending in 2009, and he currently owns “Wayne Gretzky’s,” a Toronto restaurant. • The first sports hero to have his uniform number retired across all league teams was Major League Baseball’s No. 42, Jackie Robinson, born in January of 1919. When Robinson started with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he became the first black major league player of the modern era. His career included the Rookie of the Year Award, National League MVP, six World Series and six All-Star games. He went on to be baseball’s first black television commentator. ■ PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, DOLLARS & SENSE (From page 14) such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), show you where you might have left out informaand the stars folks are tion, places where(siderophobia). you fall outsideSome the expected avjust afraid of looking up – they are erage response, and most importantly whichcalled places anablephobes. on your form are likely to be flagged by the IRS. • Not all can phobias seem that program, abnormal or ● You install your state’s and the uncommon. Shoulders are the key When you are looking to produce a nice, high bunker shot the key is to keep the face of the club facing upward for as long as possible. You will feel like the club face is open, but it’s not. This prevents the club face from closing and digging into the sand, which causes those low screamers. You achieve this by turning your shoulders. Many amateurs dig down into the sand and don’t turn their shoulders into the followthrough. Turn your shoulders all the way to your followthrough, keeping your hands high in front of your chest, and your chest and front of your body, facing the target. This will achieve a higher, softer bunker shot and prevent those low screamers.
