• The test results for mono came back negative, but the doctor had the more serious news that his white blood count was more than five times the normal range. He immediately ordered a bone marrow biopsy. When the results came back the 23-year-old was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a deadly serious condition that is fatal in just weeks to a few months if left untreated.

• Most folks have heard of the Hubble Space Telescope, an instrument carried into orbit by a 1990 space shuttle mission. But most don’t know that it was named for the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, the first to confirm the existence of galaxies other than our own Milky Way, a discovery made in 1923. A Rhodes Scholar, he studied law and set up a legal practice before realizing that his real passion was astronomy. • Bo Jackson achieved fame as the first athlete to be named an All-Star in two major sports, baseball and football. His birth name was Vincent Edward Jackson, after his mother’s favorite television star, Vince Edwards of “Ben Casey” fame. Jackson achieved his nickname when his family described him as a “wild boar hog” constantly getting into trouble. He signed with baseball’s Kansas City Royals as a left fielder in 1986 and started playing for football’s Los Angeles Raiders as a running back the following year. • Goldie Hawn has a distinguished ancestor, Edward Rutledge, who was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. This famous blonde actress is also an accomplished ballet dancer, having begun lessons at age three. At 11, she debuted in “The Nutcracker,” earning a total of $1.50 for her performance. • As the only child of famous automaker Henry Ford, Edsel Ford was born in November 1893. He grew up to marry into the Hudson’s department store family and founded the Ford Motor Company’s Mercury division. He also brought us the Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln Continental. Fourteen years after Edsel’s early death from stomach cancer at age 49, the Ford Motor Company in 1958 introduced its new Edsel brand of cars named after him. Unfortunately, the Edsel was considered a major marketing failure and was discontinued after the 1960 models came off the line. • If you’ve seen any James Bond movies, you’ve heard the musical work of composer John Barry, who wrote the soundtracks for 11 of the films. The winner of five Academy Awards and four Grammys, he also composed the music for “Out of Africa” and “Dances with Wolves.” • That bump on November baby Owen Wilson’s nose is the result of having his nose broken twice, once in a high school fracas, the other in a friendly football game. Wilson is no stranger to mischief, having been expelled from high school as a sophomore for cheating on his geometry test. He spent his junior and senior years in military school.

P LANDSCAPING

• Baby boomers will recall the daily farewell message, “And that’s the way it is,” given by CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he wrapped up the television evening news. He started his broadcasting career on radio in 1937 and brought bulletins on World War II bombings and the Nuremberg trials. During his 19 years on the evening news, Cronkite reported the momentous events of Americans’ lives, including the death of Martin Luther King Jr., the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, the Iran hostage crisis and most notably, his emotional and tearful delivery of the news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He was the source for the news of the U.S. space program. Opinion polls named him “the most trusted man in America.”

SOME BITS ABOUT

BOARD GAMES While video games continue to gain popularity and their sales stay on the rise, there’s still nothing that really compares to a good old wholesome board game! Let’s look at the origins of some of these longtime favorites. • If you’re familiar with the names of Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard, you’ve played Clue. This murder mystery game was invented in 1944 England during World War II by a solicitor’s clerk who thought it would be a good diversion for passing the time while gathered in underground bunkers during air raid drills. It was originally called “Murder!” The players move throughout nine rooms of a mansion seeking clues as to which character committed the crime and which weapon — rope, revolver, wrench, candlestick, knife or lead pipe — was used to commit the dastardly deed. • Two Canadian journalists conceived the idea of the popular game Trivial Pursuit, commercially released in 1981. An 18-year-old artist created the final artwork for the game. In 1984 alone, more than 20 million games were sold. • It’s not surprising that the best-selling board Ad Proof: game in the world is the game of Monopoly, Mwith & Bmore Consignment Center than 200 million games sold. a Barcelona street, and in France, it’s Rue de la Paix. During the game’s history, it’s been more than just a source of entertainment. During World War II, Monopoly games containing escape maps, compasses and small files were smuggled to prisoners in German POW camps. Real money was even concealed inside packs of the play money to aid in prisoners’ escapes once they reached the outside.

America, Milton Bradley released its “Beatles’ Flip Your Wig” game, with a price tag of $2.98. There were four playing pieces, one of each Beatle, and players had to move around the board collecting four cards for their band member — a picture card, a signature card, an instrument card and a hit record card. Today, if you happen to have a mint condition copy of the game, it’s worth upwards of $300.

I have noticed the actress who plays Kensi on “NCIS: Los Angeles” appears to have two different colored eyes. Does she, or am I just seeing things? I think she plays a good strong female part and would like to see her in more shows or movies. -- Mary B., Virginia Beach, Va.

Season two ratings have eclipsed the stellar ratings (especially by cable standards) of the first season, so AMC has already renewed it for a third season. “The Walking Dead” depicts the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse following a group of survivors outside Atlanta, starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies. ***

In March 2010, Andy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Production on season two was delayed so he could be treated. The Savage Truth on Money by Terry Savage

VA Loans a Great Deal for Veterans We recently celebrated Veterans Day -- and if this story seems familiar, it’s because I have written several times about the great deal that the Veterans Administration mortgage loan program offers to those who have served our country: 3.875 percent, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages. So instead of starting this week’s column with the traditional question, let me start with some answers. Here are two true stories about people who read my column and contacted VA mortgage expert Daniel Chookaszian about buying or refinancing using the VA loan program. A VA loan not only gives you lower rates and no PMI (private mortgage insurance) payment, but it lets you borrow 100 percent of the value of your home and may allow you to withdraw cash, as well. California residents Paul and Jennifer were deep in debt and struggling to pay their traditional 6 percent mortgage. A VA refinance allowed them to take out cash to pay off their credit cards, and it reduced their mortgage payment by $400. Diana, a 35-year-old disabled veteran of the Iraq War, receives monthly VA disability income as well as Social Security Disability for life. She has just closed on her first home using her VA eligibility with no money down and a 15-year fixed-rate at 3.75 percent. Her disability income was used to qualify Diana for the loan. If you or your spouse is a veteran, the VA

loan program may be the answer to your questions about finding an affordable loan. So here are the qualifications you must have to secure a VA loan:  You must have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military.  You must have a Certificate of Eligibility (available from the VA Eligibility Center. Call them at (888) 244-6711).  Your credit score must be above 640.  You must be able to demonstrate steady income, or a two-year history of self-employment, or a stream of retirement benefits.  Spousal income can help you qualify.  Your total debt payments cannot be more than 41 percent of your total income.  You cannot have any unpaid liens or judgments.  You must wait until two years after a bankruptcy to apply and cannot have any subsequent late payments. You can qualify for VA home loan benefits no matter how long ago you were honorably discharged. And even if you took out a VA loan many years ago, you remain eligible for another VA loan if the first loan was paid off. The maximum amount of the full VA no-down payment mortgage loan is $417,000. However, if you purchase a more expensive home and need to borrow money above that amount, you must put down 25 percent of the amount above the $417,000 limit, and pay a slightly higher rate to get the larger mortgage. The VA loan program is not intended for speculators or investors. The property must be owner-occupied, although the loan can be used for single-family homes, condos or one- to four-unit properties. And a VA loan can also cover a jumbo mortgage, making it an attractive alternative for higher-priced homes. There is no age restriction on qualifying for a VA mortgage loan, and you can get a new loan

The best places to shop are those with the most lenient return policies. Nothing sets the alarm bells off like an “all sales are final” sign. “Store credit or exchange only” isn’t much better. But full permission to return a lamp that deeply offends my wife’s sensibilities means full discretion for me to take it home and give it a whirl. A dog is another story. A dog is not a lamp. If you’re going to get a dog, it should be for keeps. There’s a saying that the difference between involved and committed is like a ham and eggs breakfast: The chicken was involved; the pig was committed. If you’re going to get a dog, be the pig. Recently, a man called me for advice about a problem that’s not uncommon. The dog is causing a rift in my marriage, he said. He and his wife can’t have kids. She wanted a dog to fill that void. He went down to the local shelter and brought home a dog that looked a lot like their last dog. It didn’t take long for the couple to realize the similarities did not extend beyond the looks department. The dog is phobic, unruly, unsocialized, fearful and completely void of training. The husband now contends that they bit off more than they can chew with this beast. The wife’s response? You don’t understand the power of love. Neither is quite right. Love is powerful, but it’s not an education. Its warm rays won’t radiate the ABC’s into your child’s brain. Nor will they weave a heart-shaped glossary of human terms like “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” “down” and “come” into your dog’s limited vocabulary. But how do you know that you’ve taken on more than you can handle if you haven’t made even the most basic attempt at gaining control of a situation? Yes,production this tale got off on the wrong foot. There 1 MIN: 45an unknown dog into your is no logic HRS: to bringing stamp home to stay just because he looks like your former AdVenture Media dog’s doppelganger. lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

Unhappiness Is a Disease That Often Shortens Life How many of us are pessimistic about opportunities, the future of our nation or the chance that we will live out our lives with sufficient resources to meet our needs? Pessimism is rampant, and this is associated with poor health and a shorter life expectancy. By contrast, the happier you are, the healthier and the longer you are likely to live. A study just published in the highly prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that adults who described themselves as happy had a 35 percent lower risk of dying than those who felt they were unhappy. In this report, the happiness levels of 3,583 people from age 52 to 69 were assessed and followed for five years. Many had a chronic disease, such as diabetes or high blood pressure and poor health habits such as excessive alcohol use and cigarette smoking. Despite these illnesses, being happier was associated with a longer life expectancy. This study is one of many linking happiness to health. A study followed 5,000 university students for more than 40 years and found that pessimism was associated with a higher death rate, and an important study of nuns showed that those with a positive outlook on life -- and who were happy and content -- lived longer. Happy individuals are less likely to be stressed, enjoy their work more, are often at their ideal body weight, tend to exercise and eat right, and have high self-esteem. All of these traits are predictors of longevity. Without happiness, no one can tackle his or her job with passion. To quote Donald Trump, “without passion there is no energy and without energy there is no success.” Happy people are more likely to be loved, less likely to be lonely, more likely to have faith in themselves and in a higher power, and much more likely to seek medical advice, to prevent and treat disease. And with happiness comes smiles and laughter -- two powerful tonics that not only improve health in an individual, but also infectiously promote the health of those around him or her. A good belly laugh is associated with better metabolism, lowering of blood pressure, reduction in stress and improved relationships. Research studies have shown that laughter causes the release of endorphins that elevate mood, creating a natural high that relieves tension and relaxes muscles. Laughter boosts the immune system, so that those who smile and laugh are far less likely to develop minor infections and, over the

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

No Rush to File for Social Security Benefits Q: A:

The Social Security Administration usually tells people to file three months before they want their retirement benefits to begin. So you could start the ball rolling any time now. But you really don’t have to rush. Standard retirement claims are pretty easy for SSA to deal with, and they generally flow through the system in just a few days. I’m not saying you should wait until Dec. 31 to file for Social Security. The point is that you certainly don’t have to run out and file a claim tomorrow. But here’s another thought: You might want to wait until sometime in late January to apply for your Social Security benefits. If you put off filing your claim until after you get your 2011 W-2 form, your earnings will be added into your Social Security computation, which will increase your monthly benefit amount. Because you’re filing in January, your claim will be effective that month. You possibly might not get your initial Social Security benefit payment until late February or early March, but that first check will include benefits retroactive until January. I don’t want to scare you and other readers into thinking that you won’t get credit for your 2011 earnings if you don’t present them with a W-2 form at the time you file. If you file your Social Security claim tomorrow, for example, your initial benefit will be computed without your 2011 earnings added into the mix. But sometime during 2012, SSA will get a report of your 2011 earnings from the Internal Revenue Service, and at that time, your benefit will be refigured to give you credit for the additional income. And that refigured benefit will be retroactive to January 2012. You also asked how to apply for Social Security benefits and what documents you need. Today, most people file their retirement claims online at SocialSecurity.gov. But if you prefer old-fashioned human contact, you can call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 and set up an appointment

to file your claim by phone or even in person at your for 20 years. I’ve paid into Social Security all these years. I’m about to retire and plan to local Social Security office. Q:

My Social Security checks seem cate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate webOctober 16, 2011  Volume 7: Issue #41 to come on a different day each month. This site at www.creators.com. makes it ver y hard to plan my finances. Why can’t they send Social Security checks on time COPYRIGHT 2011 CREATORS.COM each month? I know my mother always got her widow’s check on the third of each month.

A:

All Social Security checks used to be paid on the third of each month. But sending out 50 million government checks all on one day was too much of a burden for both the Social Security Administration and the post office. (This was before the advent of direct deposit. So, many years ago, they decided to stagger the delivery of Social Security checks. They’re now sent out (or more likely, electronically transferred to banks) on either the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on a person’s day of birth. As a general rule, if you were born on the first through the 10th day of the month, you get your checks on the second Wednesday. If you were born on the 11th through the 20th day of the month, it’s the third Wednesday. If you were born on the 21st through the 31st day of the month, it’s the fourth Wednesday. So whichever Wednesday is your delivery day, it’ll obviously change from one month to the next. Looking at my calendar, for example, I see that the second Wednesday of December 2011 will be the 9th, while the second Wednesday of January 2012 will be the 11th. But the point is this: Your check will be delivered on the same Wednesday of every month.

Rescued Bronze Heirlooms Are Valuable

I have my grandmother’s carnival glass bowl and would like to know more about it. It is green, around 8 inches in diameter and has a ruffled edge. The outside of the bowl is decorated with small flowers and beads. The inside is smooth and has no pattern. Signed on the bottom is an “N” in a circle.

Your bowl was made by Northwood Glass Co. The mark you described was used from 1905 to 1915. The pattern is “Beads.” Your bowl would probably be worth $50 to $75. 

Q:

I have enclosed a photo of four bronze pieces that my wife retrieved from a pile of heirlooms no one wanted after my grandmother’s death. There are two vases, a covered dish with a bronze handle and a large bowl. They are all signed in script with the name “Carl Sorensen” and in mint condition. My grandmother had a friend who would buy antiques from everywhere, and she gave some to her. I suspect these came from her friend. They are pretty, and we would like to know if they are “Antique or Junque.”

Carl Sorensen’s metalwork is definitely not “Junque;” they are museum quality pieces. Sorensen was an artist from Pennsylvania who made hand-hammered bronze and copper pieces in the early 1900s. Most of his work was inspired by the Arts and Crafts Era. Although it is not confirmed, it is thought he may have worked for both the Roycrofter’s and Tiffany. His vases and bowls were copper and bronze with a verdigris patina. Your circa 1900, antique, trumpet-shaped vases with copper bands have been seen for sale on the Internet in the wide range of $195 to $495 each. The covered dish has been seen as high as $795, and the bowl with concentric circles of copper around $250 to $400.

Carl Sorensen designed Arts and Crafts metalwork.
