• The word “conifer” comes from the Latin words conus (cone) and ferre (to bear). The word conifer literally means “cone bearing.” While many conifers are evergreen, some are not. Larches and bald cypress trees are conifers that lose their needles every fall.

• Most people only think of conifers like pine, fir, cedar and spruce trees when they think of the term “evergreen.” This is not incorrect because most conifers do qualify as evergreens, but many additional plants that are not conifers are evergreens as well. Evergreens are defined as having “foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year.”
• There are thousands of species of evergreen trees, shrubs and smaller plants. In fact, within the pine family alone there are 115 species. While pines and many other evergreens have needlelike foliage, some have leaves, fronds (ferns and palms) and other types of foliage. • Even though the name implies it, evergreens are

• Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, on December 16, 1770, to Johann and Maria Beethoven. Of the seven children born to his parents, Ludwig and two younger brothers were the only children in this family to survive infancy. • Ludwig’s father was employed as a tenor singer at the court of the Elector of Cologne. He also taught piano and violin and was Ludwig’s first music teacher. A harsh and impatient disciplinarian given to heavy drinking, he often drove young Ludwig to tears by demanding absolute perfection at the keyboard.

• He recognized his son’s unusual abilities and exploited him at an early age by touting him as another Mozart. He lied about Ludwig’s real age, stating he was younger so he would appear even more prodigious. For many years, Beethoven did not know his real age, and didn’t learn until later in life that he was five years older than he thought.

not always green. Many evergreens actually have foliage that is red, brown, yellow and other colors. • Goose Island State Park in Aransas County in southern Texas is the home of the “Big Tree.” Named the State Champion Coastal Live Oak in 1969, this tree is thought to be one of the largest in America. The large evergreen oak is estimated to be over 1,000 years old, has a circumference of 35 feet, is 44 feet tall and has a crown spread of 90 feet. Live oaks are known for their massive spread, and there are many in the Southern states around old historic homes. • Washington, the only state named after a president, is famous for its rainy weather and large forests of evergreen trees. Nicknamed the “Evergreen State,” western Washington actually has rain forests in the Olympic Mountains. • Evergreen Point Bridge between Seattle and the eastern shore of Lake Washington is the longest floating bridge in the world. It was built with a line of concrete pontoons linked by cables and attached to ordinary bridges on each end. The total length of the bridge is 7,578 feet. It was constructed this way because the bottom of Lake Washington is too muddy for a standard bridge. The bridge contributed greatly to the growth of the eastern shore, with cities like Bellevue and Redmond. (These cities contribute a lot of “green” to the Washington economy thanks to companies like computer giant Microsoft being located there.) • Most evergreen Christmas trees are not harvested from forests. In fact, 98 percent of the trees sold on holiday lots are grown on tree farms. Areas close to national forests with permit programs for cutting down live trees do have quite a following of folks who like to snowshoe or hike to get their trees, but the Christmas tree lots definitely corner the market
on sales.

• The National Christmas Tree is a live tree in Washington, D.C., that is lit each year at the start of ongoing ceremonies called the “Christmas Pageant of Peace.” The beautiful evergreen tree is a Colorado blue spruce that was transplanted from York, Pennsylvania, in 1978. The tree was the perfect size and shape, had no disease and was growing in similar soil conditions to what it would be living in at its new home in Washington. • The tree was originally a Mother’s Day gift to Mrs. William E. Myers in York. When National Park Service (NPS) employees asked the Myers family about donating the tree, they agreed. Mrs. Myers even fed the workers homemade soup as they prepared “her” tree to become the nation’s tree.

imately 25-30 million evergreen Christmas trees are sold in the United States. The top tree-producing states are Oregon, North Carolina and Michigan. It takes about four years for a tree to be ready for sale, but most are not sold until they are around 15 years old and 6 to 7 feet tall. ● It was celebrated Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw who made the following sage observation: “The liar’s punishment is not in the least that he is not believed, but that he cannot believe anyone else.”
• By age 46, Beethoven was almost totally deaf and had resorted to scribbling on notebooks as his means of communication. To assist in his music composition at the piano, he used a metal rod attached at one end to the piano’s soundboard, with the other end clenched in his teeth. The device allowed the vibrations to resonate through the rod from the piano to his jaw, providing a sensory perception of the sounds he was producing.
• Some of his locks of hair, along with several bone fragments, were examined during an autopsy years later. Chemical analyses revealed unusually high concentrations of lead, which likely accounted for much of the headache and stomach pain he endured in his later years. The three resonating bones in his ear canals were found to be almost fused together, explaining his total deafness.

Q:
I’m a stay-at-home mom and haven’t had a paycheck since I was a teenager. Will I be eligible for Social Security benefits?
A.
If you are married, you will be eligible. Your Social Security retirement benefits are tied to your husband’s. You can file when he does, provided you’re at least 62 at that time. Your monthly check will be equal to 50 percent of his, if he waits until “full retirement age” to begin collecting benefits (65, 66 or 67 depending on the year he was born). If he opts to begin drawing early at 62, then your benefit will be reduced to 37.5 percent of his monthly check. (If you’re single, divorced or widowed, the amounts vary.) We’re not talking a lot of money here under the very best of circumstances, so plan on it as a supplement, not enough to live on. Go to the Social Security Administration website at www.ssa.gov, and check out the FAQs. This site is remarkably user-friendly. * * *
Q.
If my parents dieApr. with 5a lot of debt, Tues., will I be responsible for paying it?
A.
You will not be responsible for their debts, unless you cosigned for a loan with them or you are a joint account holder on their credit card accounts. Your parents’ debts will be paid out of their estate (everything they own, including real estate). UNIQUE COINS Once their funeral expenses 1/12th pg. 4C (26x Disc. a lower risk of diabetes and optimal hormonal levels. In the case of the colon, these changes may improve colonic function that, in turn, reduces the time cells lining the colon are exposed to carcinogens in the stool that can cause cell damage and cancer. Similarly, improved immune function and better hormonal balance may protect against breast and prostate cancer. Clearly, an active lifestyle helps prevent many diseases that afflict us. The more exercise the better; but now everyone, including those who are active and fit and whose occupation requires days of sitting, must consider the importance of a 1- to 2-minute exercise break every hour. Perhaps climb a few flights of stairs or if you are anything like me and in your late 60s, that frustrating but much needed hourly bathroom break may indeed have some merit! No matter how healthy you are, how perfect your weight or how much you exercise, there are other factors that can lead to a higher risk of cancer. Most importantly is the evidence linking a higher fat intake to an increased cancer risk. Paradoxically, a too low-fat diet that leads to weight gain, altered metabolism and diabetes can also contribute to an increased cancer risk. The best diet is the prudent, don’t-diet diet that contains the right fats (olive and canola oils, omega 3 fatty acids), lean meat or fatty fish, as much fruits and vegetables as possible and carbohydrates in moderation. In addition to eating right and exercising, beware of stress, depression, low self-esteem and lack of passion for life. These traits have profound negative effects on immune function and can lead to weight gain and diabetes as well as contribute to a sedentary lifestyle that than can substantially contribute to cancer risk. Staying healthy and preventing disease is a true balancing act, requiring that every aspect of your life is as ideal as possible, a worthy goal even ADVERTISING PROOF if difficult to achieve.
Vol. VII Issue 49
CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) his intelligence, his experience, his playfulness or his affection for you, should ever be left alone in a room with a small child -- for even a second. It’s not about the breed of dog. It’s about the fragility of an infant. Babies are vulnerable. They lack the strength and coordination to defend themselves. And neither baby nor dog possesses the ability to communicate with the other. A little ambiguous roughhousing is all it takes for a small child to be seriously wounded -- even by a small dog. What does each of these incidents have in common? A parent or close relative was in the home but not in the room during each of these encounters. And most of these tragedies involved family pets that had no history of aggression. When it comes to babies and dogs, it’s important to know that there are no predictors to what might happen. The only way to ensure the safety of your child is to keep baby and dog securely separated in the absence of close parental supervision. It’s best for the baby. And it’s best for the dog. Woof!

The other main part of Medicare is Part B, or medical insurance. Part B essentially provides partial coverage of all health care costs not associated with inpatient hospital bills taken care of by Part A. Medical insurance usually costs about $100 per month. (It’s not paid for by your Medicare tax deductions.) However, you do not need to take it while you’re still working and covered by your employer’s insurance. So you should sign up for Part A now. And then you should sign up for Social Security benefits and Part B Medicare coverage when you retire.
YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
Q:
I will be 65 in Februar y 2012. I’m still working and plan to keep working until I’m 70. A friend told me that I have to register with the Social Security Administration three months before my 65th birthday even though I don’t plan to take my Social Security yet. Is this true?
A:
There really is no such thing as “registering” with Social Security -- at any age. You simply file for your retirement benefits a couple of months before you want them to begin. And in your case, it sounds like that’ll be about five years down the road. I think what your friend was trying to tell you is that you probably will want to sign up for Part A Medicare to start at age 65. And you would do that through your Social Security office about three months before your 65th birthday. Proof created by: There Mortgage are two main parts of Medicare. Even though you likely are covered by your employer’s insurance, you might as well take Part A, just because you’ve already bought it. And there may be times when you need it. Also, there’s a chance that your employer’s insurance might require you to take Part A.

A:
I don’t have anywhere near enough information to tell if the work you did was “legitimate” or not. But I can suggest something to you. You should insist on filing a claim for Social Security retirement benefits. (You have every right in the world to do so.) The claim will probably be denied. Vase Decorated with Fire Breathing Dragon Q:
The vase seen in this photo belonged to my mother-in-law and is probably 80 years old. I inherited it from her. I would like to know more about it and its value. There is a dragon in relief that curves around the vase; it has bright blue beads for eyes, and it is breathing smoke. Part of the dragon is outlined in blue and there are white dots on the edge of the top, base and the handles. It stands about 9 inches tall and is in excellent condition.
A:
You have a Dragonware vase. Dragonware is porcelain or pottery that has been made in Japan since the late 1800s. Although there are some exceptions, most pieces are decorated with matte gray that shades to black backgrounds. Dragonware pieces were mostly decorative and included covered cigarette dishes, ashtrays, vases, tea sets, plates, cups and saucers. The white dots are called moriage and are frequently used on Japanese porcelain and pottery. Your vase would probably be worth in the area of $25 to $50.

I have a Valentine card that was sent to my mother-in-law in 1925. It was printed in Germany and is a pop-up. It has a gate of roses, behind that is an angel on a red heart next to a basket of roses. The greeting is “To My Valen tine.” It is in very good condition. Is it worth anything?

Limoges China Co. made your dishes. The firm was founded in Sebring, Ohio, in 1900. “China D’Or -- IT S 284” is the pattern name and number. They produced porcelain to compete with porcelain made in France. After a serious squabble with a Limoges, France, manufacturer over the name, the company changed its name to American Limoges China Co. They closed in 1955. In the early 1900s, movie theatres often offered premiums to increase attendance.

I have copied the mark that is on a set of china that my mother-in-law had in her basement. If I remember correctly, she said she got a piece every time she went to the movies. Each piece is decorated with a scene of a lute player serenading two women in a garden setting. The edges are trimmed with a gold filigree design. I was wondering if the dishes are worth anything other than sentimental value.

As soon as this happens you have to compensate by shifting back into balance as you make contact with the ball. That’s a miss hit. In order to achieve more power and more control, get in front of a mirror and work on keeping your sockets properly stacked and balanced throughout your swing.
