• Archeological findings show that shovels in one form or another were used as instruments for digging by the earliest known civilizations. When people reasoned that they needed the help of a tool, they learned to invent one and fashion it from whatever materials were available. Whether you’re using the word shovel as a noun or a verb, it refers either way to some sort of manual labor. For our purposes here we’ll explore the noun version, which the dictionary defines as “an instrument for lifting or scooping loose material, such as earth, gravel, coal, etc., consisting of a curved blade or scoop attached to a handle.”

The Savage Truth on Money by Terry Savage
Remind Lawmakers of the Job They Have to Do Did you have to rush to get everything done this holiday season? Perhaps you headed off to a vacation in warmer climes -- or maybe you just settled for some quality time at home with your family. In any case, you know the feeling of trying to get everything done in the last few days before the clock chimes the final hour. And while you will hurry to get all the important year-end stuff at work finished because it’s expected of you and you know your superiors are watching, it seems that Congress shares no such sense of duty or urgency. Although we, the people, are their boss, it does not appear that Congress could care less. You wouldn’t be able to hide your year-end project under a stack of other stuff and walk away from work with a clear conscience. But, disturbingly, members of Congress seem completely comfortable with postponing the duties required and expected of them for a couple of months while they take off on an extended vacation. Do they think that we, the people, won’t notice? Apparently so. It took until the last minute to pass a yearend $1 trillion spending bill to keep the government operating. Perhaps the ultimate pressure of returning home to face the electorate finally got to them. But they can’t agree on extending the payroll tax cut. And still up in the air is an extension of unemployment benefits and reimbursement rates for physicians who see Medicare patients -- two issues
that have a real impact if they are not dealt with immediately. Of course, a big part of this is the process of jockeying for political and public relations supremacy in an election year. Even projects that both sides agree would be good for the economy are held hostage to the process. A pipeline that would create energy independence and thousands of jobs has been postponed until after the 2012 elections -- despite the fact that both laboring Americans and big business have reason to agree to its construction. Why the hangup on this one pipeline when we have many thousands of miles of pipelines criss-crossing America? Approval of this issue benefits both sides of the aisle -- both big business and blue-collar workers. So why has this pipeline, which is a real economic issue, been turned into a political hot potato? It’s because the “green” organizations who oppose it are big political contributors. We’ve all felt the desire to procrastinate, despite the nagging feeling that accompanies that option. You know you should make smart financial decisions, but the overwhelming consequences of facing reality encourage you to delay. For example, you know you should be making a list of all the credit card money you already owe before you go shopping. But in the “holiday spirit,” you go shopping first, and figure you’ll tally up the consequences later when the bills come in. In that same mindset, Congress rushes off to vacation, hoping to push the hard decisions into the New Year. And at the same time hoping we won’t notice if they can announce something temporary. It’s time for the bosses -- us -- to speak up and force them to do the job that we’re paying them to do. Here’s how to make your voice heard, no matter what your take on the issues happens to be: Go to www.ContactingtheCongress.org. Then just fill in your address and ZIP code to be sent to the page with your U.S. representative and two senators. Click on each name, and you’ll find a link to a “contact form.” It takes only a minute to fill out that form with your name, address and e-mail and then a category for your comment.

Let’s make sure we’re getting our money’s worth from each of them. The only way to do that is to show them that we are watching, and remind them that they owe us responsible attention to their job -- just as our bosses expect and demand that of us. You’ll have the final word at the ballot box -- but reminding them right now just who they are working for, who’s the boss and who they are accountable to will definitely get their attention and stir them into action. Dear Anna: Great idea, and yes, you absolutely can do this. All education loans, including federal and private student loans, allow for penalty-free prepayment. This means you can make extra payments to reduce the balance of the loan, or even pay off the entire balance early, without having to pay extra fees. However, the law also allows for lenders to apply a prepayment to “future installments by advancing the next payment due date,” unless otherwise specified by the borrower. The lender wants you to “pay ahead,” rather than “pay down,” and that’s what your lender is doing because you have not “otherwise specified.” Do this: Include a note with any prepayments that you make, indicating that you want the prepayment applied to reduce the principal balance of the loan. When you do this, watch very closely for how the lender applies the prepayment amount. You may also need to contact the lender multiple times to get them to credit your prepayment to the outstanding principal balance. If you need a little ammunition Tues., Apr. 5 to make your point, mention the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, which amended the Truth in Lending Act to add section 140(e) and allows for early repayment (or prepayment (END ) of any private education loan without fees or penalties.

Corner Cats, Dogs and Other People By Matthew Margolis
Apply Common Sense to Cujo American satirist Peter De Vries once said, “There are times when parenthood seems nothing more than feeding the hand that bites you.” With owners of aggressive dogs, the witticism hardly elicits a chuckle. There are many types of canine aggression: food aggression, territorial aggression, fear-based aggression, dominant aggression, protection aggression, predatory aggression, punishment aggression, pain-based aggression. Pinpointing the source of a dog’s aggression is instrumental to developing a safe and effective training regime. But it’s equally important to have realistic expectations about what it means to own an aggressive dog. Take the following letter from a reader: “My 5-year-old German shepherd is fine with my two roommates and me. We could take him by his back legs and drag him around the house if the mood were to strike us. I can remove bones from his mouth and put my hand in his food dish. He comes, leaves it and sits on command. If I tell him to stay, he will literally stay there for hours until I tell him to come here. I thought bringing him to college as my guard dog was a good idea, but it turns out he is too good at his job. “If friends come over, one second they will production be petting him, the next they will be trying to fend 45 him off. As HRS: soon1 asMIN: I call him off, he leaves, but he stamp has successfully bitten eight people, broken skin three times,AdVenture attackedMedia countless times and ripped one shirt when he lunged onto a friend’s chest. I don’t understand what kind of aggression this is. Everyone thinks he is a beautiful dog, and he really is! I just can’t believe my peaceful giant has earned the nicknames among our friends (and the guys who do work around our house) as “Cujo” and “devil dog.” Please help me!” Setting Cujo loose in a room full of friends is a good way to make enemies. There are consequences to owning an aggressive dog -- physical, psychological and legal consequences. This is why it’s imperative that the owners of these dogs keep their expectations firmly grounded. If your dog has bitten once, expect that he’ll bite again, particularly if he has not received any training to curb the problem behavior. If your dog has shown signs of aggression Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

your assets to work by tutoring at a public school, working at a food bank or campaigning for a cause you feel passionate about. Choose activities and groups that fit your health and schedule and, most importantly, volunteer for an organization you support. If you have the time to spare, someone can use your talents. Spiritual people cannot bear grudges and must have the capacity to ask for and receive forgiveness. A powerful moment for me was watching a mother on TV forgive the man who in cold blood had murdered her daughter. Only by forgiving could she let go of her self-destructive, burning anger, become peaceful and move forward with her life. No matter your faith or denomination, this is the time of the year not only to celebrate the joys of the season but also to reflect on the true message of Christmas. If you understand the importance of commitment to each other and the key elements of spirituality, rest assured the new year will promise a better, more productive and healthier life for all of us. CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) -- growling, snarling, biting, snapping -- expect that the possibility of aggression is always there, even if he has been professionally trained. Aggression can’t be cured, but it can be curbed. If your dog’s aggression is triggered by specific behaviors or circumstances, expect that aggression to surface whenever those behaviors or circumstances are in play. It was Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Einstein, as we all know, was a very smart guy. Finally, if you know your dog to be aggressive, take reasonable steps to protect your friends, family and neighbors. Confine the dog when you have visitors. Don’t leave food out all day if he’s food aggressive. Keep him on a short leash and muzzled when walking him in the neighborhood. And if you have small children, relocate the dog to an owner who doesn’t. There are things we just don’t do because they are widely known to be dangerous: leave an infant in a car alone, leave a small child unsupervised in a swimming pool, dive head-first off a cliff into water of unknown depth. And to that I add, use common sense in dealing with an agressive dog. Woof!
I write this on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I finally feel as if I have recovered from the eating, eating and more eating. And as I look forward to the holiday season, I am sure I will eat more and spend a lot. These, together with a higher risk of depression, constitute the downside of this wonder- “Breaking the Rules of Aging.” To find out more about Dr. David Lipschitz and read features by other Creators Synful time of the year. MYTH 1: Your Social Security benefit is based on your highest 10 years of earnings. FACT A Social Security retirement benefit is based on your average inflation-adjusted monthly income using a 35-year base of earnings. MYTH 2: If you stop working or start working part-time a few years shy of your Social Security eligibility age, your benefits will be severely reduced because you have limited or even “zero” earning years just before you claim your Social Security. FACT: Because your benefit is based on a 35-year base of earnings, the impact of some years of reduced or even no earnings is greatly lessened. Your eventual Social Security benefit won’t be as high as it would have been had you kept working full time right up to your retirement date. But you shouldn’t lose too much sleep over the relatively minor impact of early retirement on your Social Security checks.

Vintage Costume Jewelry Glitters Q:
This is a photo of a costume jewelry pin that my mother gave me around 1955. It is 3 inches long and is marked “Trifari.” I also have the matching clip-on earrings. The stones are emerald, peridot and clear rhinestone. They are set in gold tone metal and in mint condition. Is my set collectible, and what can you tell me about it?
baby around 1919. The plate has the alphabet around the outer edge. Both the cup and plate are decorated with children playing. They were made in Germany. I would really appreciate any information you can provide.
A:
Your plate and cup are examples of children’s ABC dishes. They were made in the late 1800s and early 1900s and are collectible. Your set would probably be worth between $50 and $75.

Glittery costume jewelry from the early to mid 1900s is indeed collectible. Gustavo Trifari and his uncle founded Trifari in 1910. The Great Depression adversely impacted the company’s modest success. In 1930, Alfred Philippe was hired as the head designer and his creative designs jumpstarted the company. Philippe had been a designer with Cartier and also Van Cleef and Arples. His early pieces were inspired by the Art Deco period. He later created large floral pieces that became known as the “fruit salad” line. Trifari used a variety of marks and yours is circa 1955. In 1975, Liz Claiborne acquired Trifari and sells its jewelry today. Similar sets are selling in the range of $75 to $125. Some Trifari pieces can go much higher.
Alfred Phillippe was head designer for Trifari.

Rosenthal Porcelain and Glass Co. has been in business in Selb, Bavaria, Germany, since 1879. It can be extremely difficult to identify the name of the pattern. Even contacting the company is usually fruitless. One option is to send a clear photo and a description of the marks on the back of the dishes to replacement services. Replacements, Ltd. or Silver Queen are two such services available on the Internet.
