• The Chunnel bridges a distance of 31.4 miles between Folkestone in the United Kingdom and Coquelles, France, near Calais. The tunnel actually runs under water for 23 of those miles. Boring machines worked from both the English side and the French side in a race to the middle, a contest won by the British. The tunnel’s average depth is 148 feet below the seabed, with its deepest point at 250 feet.

its preparation, with no fat or leavening. The trick to a perfect sponge cake is to beat air into the batter at several stages during preparation. • Order up tiramisu for dessert, and you’ll receive layers of ladyfingers soaked in espresso liqueur and layered with a custard mixture, topped off with chocolate shavings. Ladyfingers, light sweet sponge cakes about four inches long, have been around since the late 1400s, when they were created to celebrate a visit of the King of France to Italy. They are also used in trifles, a layered dessert that incorporates cake, jam, custard, fruit and whipped cream. The trifle is served in a clear glass bowl so that all the tempting layers are visible.

QUALITY SERVICE that an 800 # can’t give you!

• The first boxed cake mix in the United States appeared around 1930, distributed by a molasses company, O. Duff and Sons. Seven other companies followed suit over the next 15 years. The convenient and easy-to-prepare baking product is now dominated by Betty Crocker and Pillsbury, neither of which hit the grocer’s shelves until the late 1940s. • When Charles and Diana wed in 1981, they had, count ‘em, 27 wedding cakes. Their official royal wedding cake stood over five feet tall and was prepared by the head baker of the Naval Armed Forces. The entire carefully planned process took over 14 weeks to prepare! Two identical versions of the elaborate, five-tier cakes were made in the event that (horrors!) one might collapse. The ornately festooned bottom layer alone required 12 hours to bake.

Names can certainly be misleading. All Rights Reserved Cheesecake isn’t a cake at all, but rather a custard pie made from cream cheese, Neufchatel or ricotta cheese, and occasionally sour cream. Likewise,Boston Cream Pie is really a cake -- two layers of sponge cake filled with custard and glazed with chocolate. Coffee cake is more like a bread than it is a cake, and a funnel cake is a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe for a fried cookie sprinkled with powdered sugar.

According to SafeKids.org, about 230 children die every year in “backover” or “frontover” accidents: accidents in which they are run over by a car, usually driven by a family member or close friend, and often in their own driveway. Imagine what that number is for dogs and cats. Then imagine what the aftermath looks like. Here’s a glimpse: Kona, a Labrador mix, was 8 weeks old when my husband, Ron, and I brought her home. She was my first puppy, and I adored her! On Memorial Day of 2005, Ron and I and the dogs -- Kona and our 5-year-old Rottweiler, KC -- were out front enjoying a beautiful day. I was washing my car; he was washing his work van. Unknown to us, Kona had fallen asleep under the wheel of Ron’s van. When he went to move the van, he ran over her. I heard her cry out, and I screamed, too. Ron panicked and rolled the van back over her again. It was pandemonium at that point. I grabbed Kona, who was already going into shock, and Ron got a blanket. He and I rushed our puppy to our vet. They couldn’t help her, so we took her to a clinic. The doctor told us Kona’s back left leg was broken in three places. Her tail was broken at the base and would have to be removed. The possibility of her ever being able to control her bowls was slim to none. We knew he was trying to tell us that there was no hope for Kona. Ron was guilt-ridden. I could not stop crying. Ron told theproduction doctor to save her. 1 took HRS: MIN: 45 When we her home, she had a metal rod in her leg. We stamp had to keep her in a pen. A 5-monthAdVenture Media old puppy. Can you imagine? My husband built her a really nice pen, and we kept it clean and free of feces. She had many meds that needed to be administered throughout the day and night. Needless to say, our lives were completely centered on Kona. We got through the months of rehab, and her bowels were functioning perfectly. We were so happy! Then a strange skin infection appeared on her rear hip. To make a long story short, she needed surgery to cut out the infection: She had more than 200 stitches and gained the nickname FrankenPuppy, but she recovered from that, as well. When you see Kona run, you would never know the awful events that plagued her life and ours when she was a puppy. She is a living miracle. We never regretted the expense or the time involved in getting her through it all. The best way to prevent “frontover” and “backover” accidents is to be aware that they hap-

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

This Florida Doctor Is a Quack Sometimes, I really feel as if I should just give up. In fact, if it were not for the encouraging emails I get from many of my readers telling me to “hang in there” and “keep up the good fight,” I probably would have stopped addressing bogus emails that spread lies and misinformation about Social Security a long time ago. It’s so darn frustrating for a number of reasons. For one thing, as soon as I set the record straight on one little bit of Internet gossip, some more pops up. Also, I know that these titillating tall tales spread far and wide, reaching way more people than my little column does. So even though I’m putting up a good fight, I definitely am losing the war to those who revel in repeating ridiculous rumors. And that leads to the third reason I find these exercises so maddening. I know that these rumor-mongers aren’t really interested in knowing the truth. They use the Internet to find far-fetched fairy tales that reinforce their already narrowly held and close-minded views. And then they email those pieces of puffery to like-minded folks who, in turn, email other people -- and pretty soon the whole country starts believing this stupid stuff. The latest one that was passed along to me by many readers was allegedly written by a Florida emergency room doctor. He begins his xenophobic epistle with this little bit of hyperbole: “I live and work in a state overrun with illegals.” He then goes on to discuss all the illegal immigrants he treats in his emergency room. How he

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Page 11

finds out they are “illegal” in the hectic and sometimes chaotic conditions of an emergency room puzzles me. My hunch is he figures that if they speak Spanish, they must be illegal. Anyway, next he gripes about all the supposed government benefits these folks are getting. He rants and raves about how hardworking Americans get far less from their government, and he says that we shouldn’t have to take this anymore and that it’s all those idiots in the White House and Congress who are messing things up -- and blah, blah, blah. Every statistic cited in his email is totally bogus. I’ll just tackle a few of the most outrageous lies involving benefits administered by Social Security.

66 and are getting much more than that -- some in the $3,000 to $4,000 per month range. In effect, there is no “maximum” Social Security benefit, because if you wanted to, you could keep working until you are 100 years old and continue to build up the amount of your Social Security check.

Lie: “(A good old-fashioned American woman) is only getting $794 per month because she was born in 1924 and there is a Catch-22.” Truth: There is no Catch-22 that deprives people of Social Security money. I’m sure the alleged doctor is referring to something called “the notch.” The notch was a scam perpetrated on seniors about 20 years ago. Misleading mailings were sent out to Lie: “If immigrants are over 65, they can millions of senior citizens, trying to convince them apply for SSI and Medicaid and get more than (an the government was cheating them out of Social American) woman who has worked hard all her life Security money. A group of newer drugs are especially good for migraine sufferers. Seven of them are available. Some names are Imitrex, Maxalt and Zomig. Imitrex comes as a nasal spray and as an injection, administered like insulin. Zomig also comes as a nasal spray. This is a godsend for those who become sick to the stomach along with the headache. Not all migraine headaches produce all the signs and symptoms I mentioned, but if you have more than two of these characteristic symptoms, it’s a good bet that you suffer from migraines. Q:

This antique stand was given to my mother in 1959 by her 92-year-old friend. The ornate stand is silver and holds a frosted glass dish. The overall height is approximately 9 inches and both pieces are in very good condition. I have no idea what it was used for. I hope you can help to identify it, as well as its vintage and value.

A:

You have a silver plated Victorian card stand used for holding visitors’ calling cards. Ladies would leave their personal cards at homes to welcome newcomers or to leave a message. The ornate stands were often scrolled and were usually triple or quadruple plated. Cupids and birds usually adorned the frames. Your stand was made in the late 1800s and would probably be worth $225 to $325.

Q:

This mark is on a set of china that belonged to my mother. She received the set as a wedding present in 1937. Some of the pieces also have the words in a triangle “Warranted 22 KT. Gold -- NC. Co.” The dishes are decorated with blue and yellow flowers against a white background and have gold bands. It is a service for 8 and in perfect condition. My mother died over 20 years ago and left no information on the history of the set. I found it in a cabinet after she died and just vaguely remembered her using it when I was a small child. Thank you so much for any information you might be able to give me.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.

Shoulders and arms work together Making a conscious effort to turn the shoulders fully on the backswing can lead to tension in the arms as well as an overuse of the shoulders. This can affect your tempo and timing as well as lead to an incorrect swing path. Take your focus off your shoulders by trying the following drill: Take some practice swings resting the shaft of the club on your right shoulder, just at the base of your neck on the back swing. This will require your arms to be extremely relaxed and it will feel like they are actually collapsing at the top. Then at the finish of your swing let the shaft come to rest on your left shoulder. You will find that your shoulders will respond to your arms and you will still accomplish a full shoulder turn both on your backswing and follow-through. (Keep in mind this is a drill and will feel awkward at first). This will not only help you feel what it’s like to get a proper turn without over swinging, but it will help with your tempo as well. • In 1832, Prince Metternich of Austria was expecting important guests for dinner and gave his head chef the task of creating something new and sumptuous for dessert. The only trouble was that the chef was sick, leaving a 16-yearold apprentice in charge. Young Franz Sacher set to work inventing a chocolate sponge cake cut into three layers, filled with apricot jam and frosted with a rich icing. The dessert became known as Sachertorte and endures today as Vienna’s most famous specialty, with its recipe a carefully guarded secret.
