Assuring a Place in the 95 Percent The right professional dog training can solve 95 percent of dog problems -- the majority of which might better be described as people problems. But there are some problems training can’t touch, and often that’s because people ignored the warning signs and put off getting help. Keep reading: Last week, Seven, our 10-year-old German Shepherd, bit my 2-year-old daughter causing her to get stitches in her face. The incident was caused by a granola bar being left on the couch. Seven snatched the bar when I stepped out of the room for a minute. Our daughter either wanted to get it back or wanted to see what Seven had, and Seven attacked her. She required four stitches in her face and sustained a few other minor bites. Seven didn’t bite and thrash. Rather, he growled and nipped multiple times. The positive about Seven: He is a very loving dog. He loves to play fetch and wrestle and to just cuddle up with you. He listens well and is trained to sit, stay and come. He is a great dog for car rides, and he sits still for baths, teeth brushing and coat brushing. He loves to run! He and my daughter get along all right. These folks have a problem -- and so does Seven. The wife wants to get rid of the dog; the husband wants to keep him. She has called local shelters, hoping to find someone who will take Seven and find him a new home. So far, no luck. The unfortunate reality is that Seven is old, he’s big, he’s untrained, and he now has a history of biting. The wife is losing hope and considering euthanasia; her husband refuses. In my opinion, they are both wrong. Seven cannot live in a home with a small child -- especially a child who is allowed to crawl and jump on the family dog, as this child is. It’s dangerous, and the mother is right to be afraid for her daughter’s safety. I wasn’t mocking you in that recent column. Instead, I was doing what I always try to do -- take on all the rumors and myths about Social Security and set the record straight. I’ve discussed the so-called “notch” issue dozens of times over the past 15 years I’ve been writing this column. But I guess it’s time to trot out my arguments one more time to help people understand this perplexing subject. For those readers who don’t have a clue what we are talking about, the “notch” refers to a time period when corrections were made to the Social Security benefit formula -- corrections that were necessary to ensure that all Social Security recipients were paid properly but corrections that were misconstrued by many to be a way of cheating them out of benefits they felt they were due. Here’s the story. In 1972, Congress passed a law mandating automatic annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, to Social Security checks. Those COLAs were to be based on increases in the consumer price index, which is the government’s official inflation measuring stick. (Before 1972, COLAs were not automatic. Silver Coffee Set Serves as Family Heirloom Q:

I am enclosing a photo of a coffee ser vice that I inherited from my grandmother. The set includes a coffee pot, sugar bowl, cream pitcher and tray. Each piece is marked “EPNS,” and it is my understanding this indicates a type of silver plating. The pieces are all also marked “New Amsterdam Silver Co.” My grandparents were married in 1919, and I believe the set was a wedding gift. I intend to keep my set; nevertheless, I would like to have an idea of its value.

I have enclosed the mark on a set of dishes that I have. It is a dinnerware ser vice for 12 and the pattern is “The Ogontz.” Each piece is decorated with a blue border and floral sprigs in the center. I lost 13 pieces in a hurricane and would like some information on how to find replacements.

Woods and Sons made your dinnerware. They have been making ironstone in Staffordshire, England, since 1865. They are no longer in business. “The Ogontz” is a circa 1930 transfer-ware pattern. To find replacements, check on the Internet for china replacement firms. Also check on eBay. Depending on the dish, prices range from $5 to $35 each.

My sister was going through some things that belonged to my dad and came across a sterling pencil case with a wood pencil. The case, when closed, is about 3 1/3 inches long. The case is ornately embossed and has a ring at the top. The pencil has the name on the side “A. W. Faber -- Germany.” We do know the case has been in my dad’s possession since I was a child but not sure how old it really is. It probably isn’t worth much, but I hope

A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.

Narrow stance for better chipping Swaying on short chip shots is common for many amateurs and in an attempt to correct the problem they will widen their stance thinking a more solid base will help them keep still. There might be more of a feeling of balance with a wider stance, but it won’t necessarily keep you from swaying. To help you stay over the ball, actually narrow your stance. It’s much more difficult to sway with a narrow stance and you get a better feel for where the natural bottom of the arc of your swing is. This will keep you from bottoming out before striking the ball because your swing arc will be moved forward a bit.
