• Robert Pim Butchart was a dry goods merchant before he began manufacturing Portland cement in 1888, near his birthplace of Owen Sound, Ontario. He became very successful in the growing North American concrete industry. • Butchart learned of rich limestone deposits, which were vital for cement production, on the west coast of Canada. After exploring the area for its potential, he built a factory on Vancouver Island at a location known as Tod Inlet. In 1904, he and his family established their home there.

quotes from his writing have been changed to more modern language styles. • While flowers bloom at different times in many locations, Tusser’s rhyme points to the time of year when most flower gardens are beginning to show their colors. • Of the many famous gardens around the world, there are some, such as in Holland, that are devoted to specific flowers while others offer a broad variety in size, shape and color. • The tulip fields that bloom near Amsterdam are among the most famous in the world. The Keukenhof Gardens southwest of Amsterdam in the small village of Lisse are only open from March to May. Keukenhof translates “kitchen garden,” and the historic park is known as the “Garden of Europe.” Every spring more than seven million flowers bloom with tulips the most abundant, but also present are blooms of daffodils, orchids, hyacinths, roses, carnations, irises, lilies and more.

● In 2007, a world record was set off the coast of Brazil when a single wave was caught by 84 surfers. ● Have you ever heard of a book called “Never Again” by Doug Nufer? Probably not -- it’s not on any bestseller lists and hasn’t been reviewed by any notable critics. It’s quite possibly unique in literary history, however; in its entire 192 pages, not a single word -- even basic words such as a, an, the, of and for -- is used twice. ● If you were to stack up a million $1 bills, they would weigh about one ton. ● The Twist dance craze in the 1960s changed the culture in America and spread around the world. Most people don’t realize, though, that the song “The Twist,” which started the fad, wasn’t originally sung by Chubby Checker, though he was the one who sent the single up the charts and has since been irrevocably associated with the dance. The song was originally written and performed by an R&B singer named Hank Ballard. A deejay in Baltimore saw teenagers dancing to Ballard’s song and called Dick Clark, host of “American Bandstand.” Clark loved it and invited Ballard to perform the song on the show, but it didn’t work out. Instead, Clark found someone else to perform the song: Ernest Evans, who changed his name to Chubby Checker. It made his career. ● Colonel Sanders started selling his fried chicken dinners when he was 65 years old, and his only goal was to make $1,000 a month. *** Thought for the Day: “It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is, I can’t remember if it’s the thirteenth or the fourteenth.” -- George Burns (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

● It was British doctor and author Alec Bourne who made the following sage observation: “It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated.”
• In the early days, weekly symphony concerts were hosted by Mr and Mrs. Butchart. These were often held for guests of the family, but later attracted a larger audience. More recently, in the Summer Season (July and August) and during the Winter Holiday Season they provide a wide range of local entertainment, from Jazz to classical music.
Ross was involved in the operation and promotion of the gardens until his death 58 years later. The present owner and managing director since 2001 is the Butcharts’ greatgranddaughter, Robin-Lee Clarke.

Summer Sports Clinic If you’re a veteran with severe physical or psychological impairments, consider whether you’d enjoy participating in an adaptive sports clinic. The next National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic will be held in September 2012 in San Diego. Clinic categories are surfing, sailing, cycling (hand and tandem), kayaking and track and field in venues all over the San Diego area. Check the website [www.va.gov, then click Media Room] to be sure you qualify, but if you have spinal cord injuries, burns, injuries sustained in the past six years, psychological trauma, amputations or traumatic brain injuries, you’re likely the veteran they’re hoping will sign up. Registration forms are available for download online. The deadline is June 1, so don’t delay. (You’ll pay a late fee after that.) The application pack has multiple parts, and you’ll need to fill out all of them: a registration checklist, application, medical/physical exam form, media and news release questionnaire, and application for health benefits (if you’re not registered with the VA). Once you have all your paperwork completed, send it all to: Tristan Heaton (00SSC)SV National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic VA San Diego HCS 3350 La Jolla Village Dr. San Diego, CA 92161
If you have questions or don’t have a computer and need the forms sent to you, call the local organizing committee chair at 858-642-6426. If you don’t think you can afford the trip, talk to the Veterans Service Organization at the VA center where you receive care. The vision statement for the event says that these sports clinics and enjoying those sports later can improve independence, increase self-worth and quality of life, lower stress, reduce dependency on medications and serve as an addition to rehab you might be getting. Sounds like that could open some doors, doesn’t it? Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. Stay Out of the Wrong Hands Every once in a while, I get a message from a reader that reminds me to remind you of one very important thing: Dog training is an unlicensed industry. Anyone can hang a shingle and call themselves a dog trainer, a dog behaviorist or a dog psychologist. Your best defense is some solid 411. It’s up to you to ensure your dog doesn’t end up in the wrong hands -- hands like these: We adopted a puppy last year, and ever since we brought him home, he has been nipping and biting. We met with a woman who trains dogs, and she said it could be an issue. She advised us to pinch his lips against his teeth as soon as he nips to show that it hurts. It doesn’t faze him at all. He jumps up on us, lunges at us and bites. He is a good dog otherwise. This is just one example of the bad training advice that’s out there. You might hear it from your neighbor, your groomer or your own mother. But the most sinister version of bad advice is that which comes from a “professional trainer” who professes to “care about animals” and then suggests or performs any of the following “techniques”: -- the rolled-up newspaper as a swatting device for any part of your dog’s anatomy production -- rubbing his nose in his own mess 1 -- yelling HRS: MIN: 45 -- pointing stamp AdVenture Media -- hitting -- spanking -- stepping on his paws to prevent jumping -- holding his mouth closed to prevent barking -- biting him back to show him what it feels like -- humping him to show him I have no idea what -- pulling his tail -- forcing him onto his back and pinning him to the ground -- isolating him -- depriving him of food or water -- and, clearly, pinching his lips against his teeth. Everything on this list is animal abuse dressed up as dog training. Dogs don’t learn this way. Well, they don’t learn what you want them to learn. Instead, they learn to fear you, to be suspicious of Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

Some of them have an inquisitive “this can’t possibly be true” tone, while others are downright Listen online in stereo at angry. The most recent example of this phenomenon occurred following a column I wrote a few weeks ago in which I answered a question from a retiree about the benefits due to his wife and children. Many readers were shocked, and some irritated, to learn that a retiree’s children and his younger wife could qualify for monthly Social Security checks on his account. Here’s a typical response: “You must be wrong about benefits due a retiree’s children. Surely those kinds of benefits are only paid if the children are disabled.” Here is another: “I’ve always heard that children get benefits if a parent has died, but I can’t believe that they get checks if their father has retired.” And finally, one of the typical angry responses: “Why should a 55 year old woman get Social Security checks on her husband’s record? She should be working and supporting herself. And their kids don’t need money! These people really know how to milk the system. It’s just another benefit the liberals have tacked on to Social Security to appease the masses!” It may surprise many of my readers to learn this “tacking on” was done in 1939 -- just three years after the Social Security Act was signed and one year before the first monthly Social Security benefits were paid. In other words, Social Security has been paying benefits to the children of retirees, and to the mothers (and rarely fathers) of those kids, for more than 70 years now. Many of you wondered why they would get such benefits. The original intent of Social Security was to partially replace the income that taxpayers and their legal dependents lose when they (the taxpayers) stop working -- because of retirement, disability, or death. The law clearly spells out who those dependents are. It’s a spouse over age 62 who Some things are just doesn’t have his or her own Social Security benefit; it’s a widow(er) overgood age 60;to it’schange... a child under age too 18 (or over 18 if disabled); and it’s the mother (and Same Beautiful Music you know love more • recently the father) of any minorand kids still at home •-- Same unlesspleasing that mother formator father is working, in which case the earnings penalty rules (explained • Familiar on-air personalities many times in this column) would prevent them from getting benefits. These benefits are not very common. After all, there aren’t that many retirees (i.e., folks in their mid to late 60s and older) who have minor children at home.

Q:
I am 68 years old. I have a 47-yearold wife, and we have a son with Down syndrome who is about to turn 18. He is getting Social Security checks on my record. We’ve heard conflicting stories about whether his benefits will continue after age 18. Can you explain the rules? (My wife doesn’t get any benefits because she is working full time.)
A:
Your son’s benefits will continue indefinitely. Benefits to a dependent child normally stop at age 18, and sometime can be paid until age 19 if the child is still in high school. But those benefits can go on for life if a son or daughter is severely disabled, and has been disabled since childhood. In fact, of the 4.3 million “children” who are getting Social Security dependent’s benefits, about 950,000 are getting what the law calls “disabled adult child” payments. “Adult” is the key word, because many of these beneficiaries are folks well into their 30s, 40s, and 50s. (Remember though, they have been severely disabled since they were

pose she meant, and why did she ask such a question?
Dear Doug

Creating Happiness Q:
Several years ago I became acquainted with a lady who has now become one of my best friends. She is one of the happiest and most upbeat people I know, and ever y time we meet she lifts my spirits. I have asked her how she manages to stay so positive and seemingly carefree, and she says she really doesn’t know. Her “motto” is simply to take life in stride and not to let the bad things get the best of her. I wish I could be that way. What is the secret that makes some people able to do this, while others can’t?
A:
That’s a tough one to answer. For a first meeting, it seems an odd question to ask a stranger. I suppose we all have our own addictions in one form or another, but people don’t normally choose to discuss them with people they’ve barely met. Addictions can take many forms and range from caffeine to alcohol, drugs, food, nicotine, sweets, gambling, sex -- and the list goes on and on. On the surface, her question may appear to be a rather poor attempt at humor, but it could be her way of sounding you out to see if you share some common ground. Perhaps she is struggling with an addiction of her own and needs someone to talk to. I think it’s a safe bet that as you and your husband get better acquainted with your new neighbors your question will be answered in due time. Meanwhile, allow your new friendship to develop and take its own course . Doug Mayberry makes the most of life in a Southern California retirement community. Contact him at deardoug@ msn.com. Profitable Glass Table Set Still Sparkles Q:
I enjoy your column in the paper and hope you can answer my question. About 20 years ago, an antique shop dealer told me my pictured set of dishes is called a breakfast set. My husband received the set from his grandmother after she died. It is trimmed in gold and has strawberries; it is unmarked and in excellent condition. We are curious about how old our set is and its value.
A:
You have a four-piece table set that was made by Indiana Glass Co., which was located in Dunkirk, Ind. The “Panelled Strawberry” pattern was available in clear glass, rose-colored glass and clear with gold trim. Indiana Glass Co. made water sets, table sets, berry dishes, celery vases, goblets and sauce dishes in this pattern. “Panelled Strawberry” was introduced in 1913 and priced at $2 for the four-piece set. After being in business in Dunkirk for over 100 years, they closed their doors. The value of your set today would probably be $250 to $275.

Q:
This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain figurine of a young woman leaning against a rock. The overall height is 15 inches -- it is in perfect condition. I inherited it from my greataunt and would like to know who made it and if it has value.
A:
Royal Dux Co. created your figurine around 1900. Founded by E. Eichler in 1860, the company is also known as the Duxer Porzellan Manufaktur. It was located in Dux, Bohemia, which is now Duchov, Czech Republic. Royal Dux porcelains are very collectible and yours would probably be worth $400 to $500. Royal Dux Co. produces porcelain items such as figurines. The company is located in Duchov, Czech Republic.
Q:
I have a porcelain pitcher that has been in my family for generations. It is decorated with lemons, flowers and leaves against a cream background and holds approximately two quarts. Marked on the bottom are an artist’s palette and scrolled letters inside a circle. What can you tell me about the manufacturer, age and value of my pitcher?
was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each outfit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit. While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in common -- they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.” Well, Watson surely will be beating it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion -- and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree -- you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a playoff, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
