• Vulcan, the ancient Roman god of the forge, a furnace that heats metal to the malleable point, was first associated with Birmingham in 1885, when his image was used as advertisement for the hardware and home furnishings store, the George C. ● It was Canadian author Saul Bellow who made the following sage observation: “You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.” ● The U.S. military has created selfcleaning underwear. Yep. It seems they wanted skivvies that soldiers could wear for several weeks without changing. Nanoparticles and chemicals in the fabric repel liquids and bacteria. ● More books have been written about Abraham Lincoln than about any other American president -- more than 15,000 to date. ● It is only to be assumed that Arabella Young, a Massachusetts woman who died in 1771, was considered to be a bit too talkative. Otherwise there would have been no need for the following epitaph: “Here lies as silent clay / Miss Arabella Young, / Who on the 21st of May / Began to hold her tongue.” ● Be glad that you did not have the misfortune to be in Bangladesh during record storms in 1985. You might have been brained by the record hailstones, some weighing more than 2 pounds each. ● You might not be surprised to learn that among his Hollywood friends, screen legend and notorious drinker Humphrey Bogart was nicknamed Whiskey Straight.

Oh, DEER! Need to know more about the family Cervidae? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here are a few facts you may not know about these unique animals that you just might find interesting. • The word “deer” comes from the Old English word der, meaning “beast.” All species of the deer family are ruminants, meaning the stomach is divided into three or four compartments. They are also characterized by deciduous antlers — antlers that they shed. • There are 38 different species of deer, including the more common white-tailed and mule as well as elk, moose, caribou and reindeer. • Deer are excellent swimmers, even the enormous moose, which can paddle several miles at a time and completely submerge for upwards of 30 seconds. • The smallest of the North American deer is the white-tailed deer. It’s also the most abundant big game animal on the continent. The whitetail is native to all but five U.S. states — You
The Old Sea Captain A gruff old sea captain walked into a seaside tavern on the wharf and ordered a tall glass of rum from the bartender. Looking every bit the picture of a salty old pirate, he had a patch over one eye, a bushy black beard, a parrot on his shoulder, a wooden peg leg and a metal hook at the end of his arm.

won’t find it in Nevada, Utah, California, Alaska or Hawaii. The white-tail can jump as high as 10 feet and as far as 30 feet in distance. The adult male weighs in at about 200 pounds. The color of its upper body and sides changes with the seasons — It’s reddish-brown in the summer and a light buff color in winter.

traveling the very next day. Its large hooves function as snowshoes to support its bulk over deep snow. • The slang term “buck,” referring to a dollar, came about in the early U.S. frontier days when the skin of a male deer (a buck) was a considered currency and often used for trade. ■

At just five days old, a moose calf can outrun a human. • Folks talking about wapiti are referring to elk, second in size only to the moose. A typical bull elk weighs about 700 pounds, twice as much as a mule deer, and grows to a height of 5 feet with a length of 8 feet. The male elk sprouts antlers each year, which can quickly grow up to 45 inches long and weigh as much as 40 pounds. Antlers grow at a rate of nearly an inch a day and are covered with velvet during the growing season. Some cultures in Asia use the antler velvet as an ingredient in some of their medicines.

Q: Genie Francis is one of my all-time favorite actresses, and I just love her in the Hallmark Channel’s “The Note” series. Will there be a third movie? -- Catherine F., Harrisburg, Pa.
A:
Just in time for Mother’s Day, Genie Francis and Ted McGinley are back as newlyweds Peyton MacGruder and King Danville in “Notes from the Heart Healer,” premiering Sunday, May 13, on the Hallmark Channel. The couple is celebrating their first anniversary when they are surprised by an abandoned baby on their doorstep. I spoke with Genie recently, and she was excited to explore the mothering aspect of the character, since Peyton gave up a child for adoption 20some years earlier. Genie Francis “What I love most about Peyton is that she gets involved and she brings everything up as if it were a spiritual question like, ‘Why did I get this baby on my doorstep?’ She wants to help prevent the mother of this abandoned baby from ending up like her. Throughout this, there’s a healing for Peyton in that she knows that she’s got it in her to be a good mother.” ***

Finally, a Bank Does the Right Thing Chase bank is helping wounded warriors own free homes. What an amazing statement, given the grief that banks have given homeowners in recent years. But it’s true. Chase hooked up with three nonprofit groups -- Military Warriors Support Foundation, Operation Homefront and Building Homes for Heroes -to provide homes as a means of apologizing for the mistakes made in foreclosing on homes owned by active military and veterans. Specifically, within five years, Chase has vowed to provide a mortgage-free home to 1,000 wounded veterans. Chase, also known as JPMorgan Chase, didn’t stop there. --Lower mortgage interest rates: Eligible borrowers will have a 4 percent interest rate while on active duty and for a year after that. The Service-
members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) limit is 6 percent. --Improved affordable loan program: If you’re having problems making payments and want a mortgage modification, Chase will go above and beyond the new Home Affordable Modification Program. --No foreclosure for active duty personnel. --Employment: In the next 10 years, Chase will coordinate the hiring of 100,000 veterans, working in tandem with other corporations. --Education: Earn a Technology Education certificate via Syracuse University, courtesy of Chase, if you were active duty after Sept. 11, 2001. Study from home, as the program will be online. Check www.veterans.syr.edu for more details. --Access: To make sure someone is available to handle veteran matters, it’s opened a hotline Tues., 5 that runs 24 hours a day. For Apr. mortgage questions, call the Chase Military Services Hotline at 877-4690110. I’m not a fan of banks, but when one steps up and does the right thing, it needs to be encouraged. When we talk about animal cruelty, it’s typically in the context of humans abusing animals physically or emotionally -- hitting an animal, starving an animal, neglecting an animal. But there is another kind of cruelty, one in which humans allow or even encourage one animal to abuse another. Dogfighting is a particularly sadistic version of this. Here’s a version that hits closer to home:
“We have two female Shih Tzus, and we brought both of them home at 8 weeks old. Over the past few months, Sadie, who is now 4, has become aggressive toward Precious. But outside of that, Sadie seems to snap for no reason. “Yesterday, we had to separate Sadie from Precious and the rest of the family because she would not stop growling and charging ferociously at Precious. Female dogs follow a pattern similar to human sisters. They play well together when they’re little -- and they want to kill each other when they grow up. At least for a while. The difference is that human impulses, for the most part, are mitigated by our capacity for empathy and our understanding -- or fear -- of consequences. Dogs aren’t bridled by such things. And this seems particularly true of female dogs in relation to other female dogs. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If you’re going to get two dogs, your best pairing is one male and one female; next best is two males; last resort is two females. But whatever the pairing, if one dog is hurtCASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Leaders in the field of medicine are embracing the fact that we do far too many unnecessary tests and procedures that could account for a third to a half of our $3.2 trillion annual health care spending. In the past few weeks, nine major medical groups have each come up with five commonly ordered tests in their practices that are overused. This is part of the “Choose Wisely” campaign that is led by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation and Consumer Reports. Here are some of the tests and recommendations that many believe are overused. Not all groups and all recommendations are listed here. Family physicians recommend against Xrays of the lower back during the first six weeks after symptom development; antibiotics for mild-tomoderate sinus infections; a bone-density test for women under 65 or men under 70 who have no risk factors for osteoporosis; and pap tests for women under 21 or those who have had a hysterectomy. The American College of Physicians, which represents internists, questions the need for a routine EKG if the patient is at low risk of heart disease; CT or MRI scans if the person has fainted or lost consciousness and has no neurological problems; and preoperative chest X-rays if the patient has no lung problems. Cancer doctors recommend against the treatment of many tumors if the patient is weak and frail and there is no proven evidence that treatment will succeed. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
Reform, Yes ... Panic, No! I was all set to submit a column to my editor with reactions to the fact sheet I recently offered my readers called “When to Take Your Social Security Benefits.” But then I woke up this morning to this headline in my morning paper: “Social Security Drain is Gaining Momentum.” It was yet another news report predicting the demise of our nation’s bedrock retirement insurance program. So I’m delaying that practical column about the best time to sign up for Social Security to write a more politicallycharged newspaper story dealing with the hot button issue of Social Security reform. The latest news stories focused on a recent report issued by Social Security’s Board of Trustees, based on data compiled by Social Security Administration actuaries, that the program’s trust funds will run dry in 2033, three years earlier than the estimate in last year’s report. Lower than anticipated wages (and thus lower projected payroll tax receipts) were cited as the main reason for the sooner-than-expected funding shortfall. This latest trustee’s report will inevitably lead to all kinds of gloom and doom stories in the media -- some of them predicting catastrophic consequences for the program and its beneficiaries. Indeed, the report in my local paper said, “Unless Congress acts -- and forcefully -- payments to millions of Americans will be cut.” And I know I will get emails from thousands of my readers. Some will be seriously concerned that their Social Security checks will soon be reduced. Others will make hasty and ill-advised decisions about starting their Social Security benefits (perhaps too soon) because they are worried that the rug will be pulled out from beneath them -- that Social Security rules will change dramatically in the next couple of years. My message to all concerned is to take a deep breath and calm down. Sure, Social Security has long-range funding problems -- due almost entirely to the fact that baby boomers are turning into senior boomers at the rate of tens of thousands per day. But they are problems that can be dealt with in a rational and comprehensive manner. And they will be dealt with as soon as this country has the political will to take on the challenge. And I think that will is just about there. This problem isn’t new, of course. People have known about the demographic time bomb represented by the aging baby boom generation for many years now. And most folks have been inclined to blame Congress for inaction, wondering: “Why don’t they do something to fix Social Security?” I place a large part of the blame on the American people -- on voters and our negatively-focused election process. For example, if I had run for Congress anytime in the recent past on a Social Security reform platform that called for an increase in the retirement age and a slight decrease in annual cost-

of-living adjustments (two very realistic and rational reform scenarios), I would have lost the election in a landslide. My opponent would have run negative ads claiming that I was out to gut grandma’s Social Security checks. I can envision the 30 second spot now. There would have been a picture of me taken on my worst bad hair and ugly face day, and next to me would be a sweet little old lady staring at her Social Security check in horror. A very ominous-sounding voiceover would say, “Did you know that Tom Margenau has a plan to slash our Social Security?” Then we would have seen my opponent, as handsome as the day is long, walking though a field of flowers with lots of happy, smiling and adoring senior citizens surrounding him. And you’d have heard him say, “Vote for me, Wally Wonderful. I love my grandma and I won’t touch her Social Security check with a ten foot pole.” And sadly, the voters would have bought it. But as I said, I think the mood of the country is changing. I think folks are ready to acknowledge that we have to do something to deal with Social Security’s long-range problems. So what can we do? I’ve used this column many times to offer some suggestions for reform. These aren’t solutions that I’ve dreamt up. They are commonly cited proposals for dealing with Social Security’s funding problems. Even though you will hear all kinds of ideas over the next couple of years for changing Social Security -- from radical right wing proposals to “privatize” the system to nonsense left wing suggestions to “leave well enough alone” -- I will bet money that two or three of the following reforms will eventually be adopted and passed into law: --A long-range increase in the retirement age, probably to age 68; --An increase in the number of years used to compute a Social Security retirement benefit, from the current 35 year base to 38, which will have the effect of slightly reducing future retirement benefis; --An increase in the Social Security taxable wage base, probably to $250,000; --A long-range and small increase in the payroll tax, perhaps from the current 6.2 percent to 6.5 percent; and --A small decrease in the annual cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) paid to Social Security beneficiaries. Here is one final note about the timeframe
Page 11
for dealing with Social Security reform. Most of my readers were in their 20s and 30s the last time the program faced a financial shortfall. This was in the late 1970s, and at the time, Social Security was only five years away from insolvency. Many of you were too young to give Social Security a second thought. But a series of amendments in 1983 set the system on the course it’s still on today, putting the system in the black for the next half century. I’m not saying we should once again wait until Social Security is five years away from bankruptcy. The sooner we deal with Social Security reform, the better. But I am saying we don’t need to panic.

Chair Fit for a King Q:
I bought the wooden chair seen in this photo from a ver y elderly lady who told me it had been in her family for a long time. The seat measures 13 by 15 inches and the overall height is 36 inches. I use it with a small lady’s desk. Before I have it restored, I was hoping you could tell if it has any value.

You have an Edwardian side chair. The Edwardian period of design lasted from 1901 to 1910 and was named for King Edward VII of England. The design lines were a direct contrast to the heavy, ornate, dark furniture of the Victorian era. Earlier styles and designs were incorporated into Edwardian furniture but cabinetmakers used a lighter touch. Q:
I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a potter y red orange rooster figure. It was a wedding gift in 1955. I always kept it in a china cupboard, and it is still in perfect condition. The rooster has a green comb and legs and stands about 20 inches tall. I haven’t decided what I want to do with it -- keep it or put it in a tag sale. Knowing if it has any value will help me make up my mind.
A:
Haeger Potteries made your rooster. It has produced pottery since 1871 in Dundee and Macomb, Illinois. Haeger Potteries has made a variety of pieces that includes figures, art pottery, dinnerware, lamp bases, florist wares, and decorative ware. The “Royal Haeger” mark was first used around 1938
three years of his collegiate career, Wooden seamlessly entered the collegiate coaching world and achieved success never before -- or since -- heard of. Both men were American titans. Wooden and Edison achieved things that parents all over the world wish for their kids, they saw nothing and made something. I mean, big stuff. But Edison came from a time when your boss could box your ears in with a two-palm smash (which actually made him part deaf). And though Edison created things that would go on to shape our lives, securing 1,093 patents in the process, Wooden defined it in ways that Edison could never have dreamed of ... a career that produced 1,207 wins from his high-school days and beyond. To put it in simple terms, Edison was able to identify a need and then make plans to fulfill it in ways that tended toward the “throw it up there and see what sticks” method. Wooden was far more principled in his approach. Granted, he wasn’t creating light from electricity or reproducing sound on wax, but his legacy actually might surpass Edison’s in ways that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. • Hard rockers were listening to the likes of Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple, while Southern rockers tuned into The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Disco lovers listened to the Bee Gees and danced the Hustle, and soft rock folks enjoyed the crooning of the Carpenters, Barry Manilow and the Osmonds. Billboard magazine declared Elton John the best artist of the decade. We started listening to our music on the Sony Walkman, a portable cassette player, in 1979.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.

The stigma about hybrid clubs Although there are more and more hybrid clubs showing up in golf bags, there is still a large number of golfers who should be playing them instead of long irons, yet they have never even tried hitting one. Early on, hybrid clubs were resisted because they were considered easier to hit than long irons. Well, they are! So why is that viewed as a bad thing? Not only are they easier to hit from the fairway, but they are easier off the tee, out of the bunkers and the rough. Although there is still some stigma about the hybrid club, most golfers are gitting over it. If you are wondering if a hybrid club is better for you than long irons, you can borrow a demo club from your local golf shop (or a friend’s golf bag) and try it for yourself. You’ll notice it feels like you are able to hit more down on the ball, very similar to the feel of a shorter iron. It will also be easier to get the ball up in the air and contact will be more consistent and solid due to the fact that hybrids are more forgiving than long irons. You’ll wonder what took you so long to give the hybrid a chance. Tina Mickelson, PGA

Game shows gained in popularity, including “Wheel of Fortune,” “Family Feud” and “The Price is Right,” first hosted by Bob Barker in 1972. NBC debuted “Saturday Night Live” in 1975; George Carlin was the first host with musical guests Janis Ian and Billy Preston. HBO was inaugurated as the first pay-TV channel in 1972.
