BEHIND THE MAGIC

(from page one)

the three Bruces were dumped on the Universal back lot. No efforts were made to preserve them, and none of the three original sharks remain. • A fourth “Bruce” was made from the same mold as those used in the film. Although it never had a place in the filming of “Jaws,” it was employed at the Universal Theme Park from 1975 to 1990. • In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror classic “The Birds,” people in a California beach town are suddenly terrorized by swarms of birds. As outlandish as the premise sounds, it was inspired by an actual incident only two years before where birds in Monterey Bay suddenly began crashing into local houses. • Years later, the strange real-life occurrence that inspired “The Birds” was explained as the result of toxic algae in the birds’ water supply. • In the story of the 1976 suspense blockbuster “The Omen,” a couple (played by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) takes on the care of an orphan who, it turns out, may literally be the devil’s spawn. The strange occurances in the filming of this movie were so remarkable it inspired the documentary “The Curse of the Omen.” chipfix4u@gmail.com

film was also shaken by a strange incident when driving in Holland during the time of the filming. His car suddenly went out of control and crashed. When he got out, he was startled to see the that the road sign read “Ommen, 66.6 km.” The date was Friday the 13th.

● It was British mathematician, philosopher and social critic Bertrand Russell who made the following sage observation: “Every advance in civilization has been denounced as unnatural while it was recent.” ● If you’re like most adults, you have approximately 1,000 hairs per square inch of your scalp. That might seem like a lot, but consider the otter: Its 1 million hairs per square inch of skin make it the owner of the densest fur in the world. ● Before the 19th century, it was déclasé to wear clothing with pockets. All the well-dressed members of the upper classes had servants to carry things for them. ● The next time you’re out for a walk in the country, kneel down and scoop up a cupful of soil. You might be surprised to learn that that single cup of dirt could hold more bacteria than there are people on the planet. ● Those who study such things say that more Frisbee-type discs are sold every year in the U.S. than footballs, baseballs and basketballs combined.

Among the hundreds of actors and actresses that have graced our TVs or movie screens, there are some fascinating, little-known stories about the paths they took to get there. Here are some quick highlights of a few such individuals that you’re sure to recognize. • Although Elvis wasn’t primarily an actor (though he did appear in 31 movies between 1956 and 1969), his eighth grade teacher would certainly have encouraged him to pursue an acting career over anything musical. After hearing the 13-year-old strum his borrowed guitar and sing, she told him outright that he had “absolutely no aptitude for singing.” Fortunately for the rest of the world, he listened to his inner voice instead of his teacher and went on to become the best-selling recording artist of all time.

Sarah Chalke does. When will she get her own show? -- Jason R., via e-mail

Q:

My husband said he read somewhere that Breckin Meyer is leaving “Franklin & Bash” because he has a new comedy on TBS. Please tell me that isn’t true. -- Kellie K., via e-mail

A:

The only part that is true is that Breckin does indeed have a new comedy called “Men at Work” on TBS, which premieres Thursday, May 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The multicamera comedy, which Breckin created, writes and executive produces, stars Danny Masterson, James Lesure, Michael Cassidy and Adam Busch. Breckin Meyer Breckin told me a bit about his new show when we spoke the other day: “Honestly, it’s a show based on my life and the embarrassing relationships I’ve had. It’s about four guys who are all at different stages of their lives relationship-wise, and they have each other’s backs. It’s based on me and my friends.” As for Breckin making a cameo, he played coy: “I don’t know -- we’ll see. There might be an Alfred Hitchcock-like walkthrough. Hopefully we’ll have some better guest stars than just me.” Speaking of guest stars, as “Franklin & Bash” gears up for its second season -- premiering Tuesday, June 5, on TNT -- Breckin revealed: “We have an unbelievable line of guest stars this season. Sean Astin plays a superhero. Seth Green and Eric Mabius come on as the ‘Bizarro’ Franklin and Bash. Cybill Shepherd guest-stars. And we actually get to meet Mark Paul Gosselaar’s mom this time around, who’s played by Jane Seymour.” ***

Mental Health Help From the VA Depression. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Substance abuse. Thoughts of suicide. Trauma from sexual assault. Anxiety. If you’re a veteran with any of these mentalhealth struggles, there is help via the Department of Veterans Affairs. You can take a big step forward in getting help for yourself or a veteran family member by going to the VA’s website, www.mentalhealth.va.gov. Click on: --Screening tools: You’ll find screening tests for depression, PTSD and substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol. --Where to get help: Click on the green HELP graphic, and you’ll find tabs for getting help right now (if you are in crisis, call 1-800-273-8255 and press “1”), program locators and treatment info. Click on the map graphic to find the nearest VA facility. Use the drop-down menu to find the type of facility you need. There is a special PTSD link on the left side of the screen. --If you’re having suicidal thoughts (or if there is a veteran you’re worried about): If you can get to a computer, consider checking in with the Veterans Crisis Online chat. Someone is there 24 hours a day. Go to www.mentalhealth.va.gov and click Suicide Prevention on the left side of the screen. (Or go to http://veteranscrisisline.net/) You also can send a text message to 838255. You don’t have to be enrolled in VA health care to get help. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki recently announced that the VA would be adding 1,600 more mental-health clinicians -- nurses, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists -- plus 300 more support staff. The need is great -- 1.3 million veterans were helped with mental-health services last year -- and that number will only increase. If you need help, it’s there. Don’t wait. Just take the first step.

How to Find a Financial Advisor You Can Trust Dear Mary: My husband has been handling our finances, but he was recently diagnosed with dementia. I feel so® overwhelmed with everything. He has already forgotten to pay some bills, so IHunt have gotten involved with by Mary our finances. My husband wants to sell our home, but houses aren’t selling in our area -- and I really don’t want to sell. We’re looking into refinancing. We need to get out of debt. I don’t know where to start with all this. -- Rhea, via email

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Dear Rhea: It’s time for you to step in and take over the household finances. If you have not been involved all along, just plan on it being daunting. Make an appointment with a fee-only financial advisor, who will charge you a flat fee based on an hourly rate, rather than try to sell you financial products to earn a commission. Once you have this appointment, gather together all of your financial information that you can find or know about, and take it with you. Go alone to this meeting so you will be free to speak openly with this counselor. You may also need to speak with an attorney who can work with your husband’s doctor to give you power of attorney over future legal and financial matters. I am so sorry that you are facing this situation, but now is not the time for a pity party. You need to move into the role of family decision-maker, diplomatically and lovingly. The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors has a list of fee-only advisors in your area on its website, www. NAPFA.org. * * * Dear Mary: After my children left for college, I decided to go back, too. I am getting my education paid by financial aid, but I also qualify for student loans at a very low inter-

Page 7

est rate. I don’t need the loans for tuition, but wonder if I should use them to pay off my car, and then use the car payments to pay off the student loans? It makes sense to me, but what do you think? -- Pamela, via email Dear Pamela: This might look like a good idea on paper, but be very cautious. Unless you have demonstrated a high level of financial maturity and personal discipline in the past, you could be stepping into a trap. Will you really make the same car payments you’re making now to your student debt, even though not required? Should something happen that prevents you from working now (I assume you have a job), finishing school or working in the future, how will you make those student loan payments? A traditional car loan could be repaid or discharged through a variety of methods, from ADVERTISING PROOF selling the car to voluntary repossession or even Mon, 2/20/12 5:00 p.m.. Summertime Pests Summer brings outdoor fun, warm weather and a closer relationship with Mother Nature and all her offspring -- including pests that can affect your dog’s health. This time of year, vets see more dogs who are eating their normal fare but experiencing weight loss. This could be caused by a lot of things, but any dog who eats what he normally eats and suddenly starts losing weight needs to see a veterinarian. Among other things, this is a symptom of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), which is caused by a parasitic worm that infests the pulmonary arteries after the dog has been bitten by a mosquito that has previously bitten an infected dog. The disease is life threatening and must be treated promptly. Other signs of an infected dog include coughing after physical exertion and labored breathing. You could protect your dog by avoiding exposure to mosquitoes, but that’s impossible if he goes outside when mosquitoes are in season. So the best protection is preventive medication for heartworm, which can only be administered if your dog has not been infected. Unfortunately, there is no protection against the West Nile virus, also carried by the pesky mosquito. Keep your dog indoors at sunset and during the early evening hours when those disease-laden production pests are hunting for blood. HRS: 1abound Puppies MIN: 45 this time of year, and they start their basic vaccinations at about 6 to 8 weeks stamp AdVenturecontinue Media of age. Follow-ups every four to six weeks until the pup reaches about 4 months of age. Until that time, your pup isn’t protected from some of the more prominent and serious diseases -- distemper and parvovirus -- and it’s best to keep him out of dog parks and group obedience classes until he is. Internal and external parasites are big problems, especially now. Beware of fleas, ticks, flies and lice, all of which carry disease and cause serious allergic reactions. Fleas also transmit internal parasites. What can you do about these pests? Inspect your dog regularly. Look beneath the fur to the skin for signs of fleas and for ticks. Check him head to toe. Fleas are sneaky little buggers, and there is more than one variety. Some prefer ears. Others lurk in armpits. And when you come looking for them, they scatter so rapidly that you’ll miss them if you are not diligent. If your dog is scratching Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

PSAs ill-Advised in Men of Warren Buffett’s Age Warren Buffett’s recent disclosure that he has been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer made front-page news in virtually every newspaper and business website in the nation. The billionaire investor is 81, and questions have long been raised about who would be his successor as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. At his age, Buffett has an average life expectancy of 8-10 years and fortunately, the chances that prostate cancer will shorten his life are very small. The biopsies to diagnose the cancer and the adverse effects of any form of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy pose a far greater risk. Should his doctors have screened him for prostate cancer? Most experts believe that no tests should be done unless symptoms are present that suggest a problem. Buffett had an elevated prostate-specific antigen test, or PSA that suggests the presence of prostate cancer. However, the use of the PSA has come under intense fire. In 2008, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended against using the test in men over 75. Their rationale was its notorious unreliability as well as the fact that PSA levels are frequently elevated in older men for other reasons. Furthermore, while prostate cancer is more common in this age group, the chances of the disease causing symptoms and shortening life expectancy are small. Recently, the task force recommended that the PSA not be tested in healthy men of any age. While this has created some debate, virtually every expert on prostate cancer agrees that measuring the PSA level in men over the age of 65 is of no value and does not prolong life; even for younger men, the benefits are small. The thinking now is that PSA tests should be limited to men at a high risk of developing prostate cancer, including those with a strong family history of the cancer, blacks and anyone with symptoms suggesting prostate cancer (blood in the urine, for example). Based upon all the available evidence,

there is little chance the cancer will cause Buffett to experience symptoms or lead to his death. On the other hand, the diagnostic tests and treatment may cause serious problems. Buffett has had multiple biopsies, which can cause severe bleeding and a chance of a serious infection that, on occasion, is difficult to treat. Buffett was 1 of 1 million U.S. men estimated to have had a prostate biopsy in the past year. Of those, 3 out of 12 had a cancer, but for the majority, treatment was unnecessary. Buffett is being treated with radiation. Not only is there no evidence that his life will be prolonged or symptoms prevented, the side effects are significant. Radiotherapy can lead to incontinence, persistent blood in the urine, chronic irritation of the bowel and bladder, and a higher risk of infection and impotence. These side effects are not rare. The Preventive Services Task Force has found that of the more than 1 million U.S. men treated by either surgery or radiotherapy or both from 1986 through 2005, about 5,000 died soon after treatment, up to 70,000 had serious complications, 500,000 men had persistent blood in the semen and about 250,000 were impotent, incontinent or both. Only Buffett and his physician know the true extent of his disease and any decision about treatment must be jointly decided by the physician and a fully-informed patient. For every physician who believes that screening should not be done, there are others who believe just as strongly that not doing the test or ignoring possible cancer may lead to the spread of the disease throughout the body and a painful death. While this may occur in only a very small or even a tiny fraction of patients, there are those who believe that saving a single life is worth it, no matter what. The message is clear. Be empowered and involved in your care. Warren Buffett studies every minor detail of a company before he considers an investment. The same amount of study and understanding is needed in making a decision about a treatment that remains so disputed. until age 70 in order to get a 32 percent “delayed retirement bonus.” Many are claiming benefits as a “dependent” husband or wife off of their spouse’s Social Security account at age 66, and then living off that smaller amount until age 70 when they switch to their own retirement account -- with that added bonus. Until the law was recently changed, others were filing for reduced Social Security benefits at 62 and investing every dime of that money while they lived by Tom Margeneau off of other retirement accounts. Then at age 66, they would pay back all the benefits they received and file a new claim to get full benefits from that point on. They came out ahead of the game because they were able to pocket whatever interest they earned on the benefits received between age 62 and 66. The government realized they were essentially providing interest-free loans to wealthy retirees, so they put a stop to that practice. I find it rather curious that baby boomers, Again, I am not saying that treating Social many of whom, in their youth, decried the accumulaSecurity as an investment is bad. curity office, go over all the numbers, consider their options, and then make a rational decision based on the facts. But some of my readers aren’t being rational. They are going way overboard. They sent me lists with dozens of different options and asked me to help them make the right choice. Some sent me matrixes. Others sent me spreadsheets with more data on them than I’ve seen in the annual reports for major corporations. One guy had figured out what he would get from Social Security in 25 different scenarios: file at 62, die at 90; file at 66, die at 85; etc. He said he was losing sleep trying to figure out what to do! A little financial planning is good. But trying to squeeze every last nickel out of the system is maybe too much? And I noticed that almost all of the folks who sent me emails fretting over their Social Security decision were not between a rock and a hard place. They were, financially speaking, between a cushion and a soft place. No matter what they chose to do with their Social Security, they were going to be living very comfortable lives in retirement. My wife and I both took our Social Security benefits at age 62. It might not have been the smartest decision in the world. But guess what? We don’t care. We are having way too much fun enjoying life and our retirement. So the message to my readers is this: study the information I give you; maybe give some second thoughts to delaying benefits too long; then make a decision about when to take your Social Security that you are comfortable with -- AND ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

We do well without it, though. Appendicitis has not gone out of fashion. It happens with the same regularity it always has. The age group most likely to suffer from it is the group between 10 and 19. Around 250,000 appendectomies are done yearly in the United States. Newer developments in the diagnosis of appendicitis include CT scans and ultrasound. Many surgeons now use a laparoscope to remove it. It’s a viewing instrument passed into the abdomen through a small incision. Instruments also are inserted through similar small incisions. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don’t think my problem will impress you, but here I go. Q:

Our grandson is off to college in September, and he is eager to spread his wings. He is a hard working student, but as of yet, has not chosen a career path. Fortunately, he has the academic record to choose either a science or liberal arts curriculum. His father died ten years ago, and he often relies on my husband for sound advice. He has some questions about what course of study to follow toward a career that offers a good chance of finding a job when he graduates. Can you share some ideas we may not have thought of?

A:

In this sorry economy we now find ourselves in, most students are well aware of how scarce good jobs are upon graduation. Since it will take your grandson several more years before he faces the situation, time may be on his side. Maybe by the time he has his degree things will have turned around and the economic outlook will have improved. Finding a career that combines together one’s passion and natural ability is the ideal situation to hope for. The first two years of broad undergraduate study is when he will be exposed to new areas of study that may capture his interest and curiosity. Many college students switch their majors several times as they continue to discover new areas that interest them. Your grandson should try to settle on his major by his sophomore year to allow him time to complete all the prerequisite classes. What high school subjects captured his interest? What classes were the easiest for him to get the highest grades? Is he a people-oriented person or is he more interested in science and research? Networking through inside connections is always a better way of landing a position than coming through the front door with a job application. As grandparents who likely have a wide circle of acquaintences, do you have connections to people who could help in this area? During summer vacations, could he volunteer or find part-time work to broaden his base of experience? It’s been said that experience is the best teacher because it gives you individual instruction!

Q:

These days, whether we are watching television or reading the newspaper, 760-219-5184 we find ourselves getting depressed and feeling negative! There's nothing but bad news coming from every direction --- socially, politically and economically. Our society appears to have lost its direction and is now headed down the wrong track. How are we supposed to stay positive?

● On May 22, 1455, the battle of England’s War of the Roses begins in St. Albans, 20 miles northwest of London. The forces of House of York, whose badge was a white rose, defeated the red-rose House of Lancaster. Both families claimed the throne, and the war would stretch on for 30 years. ● On May 23, 1701, at London’s Execution Dock, British privateer William Kidd, popularly known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for piracy and murder after capturing a boat that was loaded with gold, jewels, silk, sugar and guns. A colorful legend grew up around the story of Kidd, including reports of lost buried treasure.

I reluctantly have to agree with you. I blame our collective sour attitude on the media gatekeepers who seem to be convinced that only the bad news deserves attention. I believe that pessimism tends to feed on itself. It is self-fulfilling and grows its own destructive momentum. Most people seem to go along with the majority in shaping their outlooks and attitudes. We need to rethink our priorities and remind ourselves that although things aren't perfect, we don't have to let negative news make us negative people. As for me, I miss the can-do spirit I grew up with. During the Great Depression, we had no choice but to roll up our sleeves, dig in and solve our own problems. We knew what it was like to want and not get. In today’s world people want and expect instant gratification. The trouble is it takes to time to find solutions to our problems. Things like “saving for a rainy day” is a good example. People seem to have lost belief in the virtue of patience. But there is something all of us can do

I would like to know if you can help me find out the value of my set of sterling silver flatware. I have place settings for 10 and also 6 ser ving pieces. The pattern is called “Processional,” and it was made by Fine Arts Sterling Co.

A:

From 1944 to 1979, Fine Arts Sterling Co. was a distributor for six sterling patterns made by International Sterling Co. “Processional” was made around 1947. The value of your set would probably be between $2,000 and $4,000. * * *

7. Asphalt 6 This is a racing game that has great graphics and utilizes the iPad’s gyroscopic abilities in that you treat the tablet like a steering wheel. It’s pretty difficult and very fast-paced. (Don’t play it before bed -- your adrenaline will keep you up all night, and I speak from experience.) The game is free, and as you win races you earn points and get to upgrade to other car models. I’m not much of a game player, but this one has me hooked. 6. NBC Sports Talk I’ve found this to be the best “inside” sportsinformation app available. The stories are well-written, often a bit pithy but usually very insightful. Every major sport is covered in an easy-to-use interface, and it provides a daily schedule, scores, the Vegas line and even lets you buy tickets to an event. Far better than ESPN or any other sports-news app I’ve found to date.

Conqueror.” Not only were the actors and crew exposed to dusts blown over from the nuclear test site, filmmakers unknowingly shipped 60 tons of the radioactive dirt by rail back to Los Angeles for reshoots.

• Mel Gibson said he received similar signs that seemed to suggest that he should go ahead with his plans to make this film. In one incident, a French woman, whom he had never met, appeared out of nowhere and said, “Jesus loves you.” • During the whipping scene, Caviezel was struck several times with enough force by the cat o’ nine tails that the weighted ends actually whipped around his body, puncturing his skin and drawing blood. His facial winces during this scene were due in large part to the actual pain he experienced with each lash.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.

● Align your shoulders with the slope of the hill. Your shoulders should be parallel to the slope. To do this properly you will find that your weight is on the inside part of your left foot and your left shoulder is lower than your right. ● Ball position is critical. With a slightly open stance and club face, play the ball in the center of your stance. This setup will encourage a steeper swing. You still want to ensure that you hit the sand behind the ball as you would a regular bunker shot, but the follow through should continue along the slope of the hill, remaining low and as open as possible. Don’t allow the club to turn over. The ball will come out lower than a normal bunker shot and there will be more topspin on the ball, causing it to roll further. By taking all of these factors into account your downhill bunker shots and your confidence in achieving them will quickly improve. Tina Mickelson, PGA

• One of the most recent series of bizarre incidents occured during the filming of Mel Gibson’s biblical epic, “The Passion of the Christ.” Actor James Caviezel, who portrays Jesus in the film, had a puzzling experience when a total stranger walked up and said, “You will be Jesus.” The incident occured six months before he had even heard about the Passion film.
