• Did you know that palm trees are actually not trees at all, but grass? Palm trees do not produce bark or a cambium layer that allows it to heal over injured areas as plants with a woody tissue do. The trunk of a palm is simply a compact mass of hardened spongy material that carries moisture and nutrients to the fronds (leaves). The trunk itself expands as the plant grows taller, unlike an actual tree that forms annual growth rings as it ages.

● It is still not known who made the following sage observation: “Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.” ● If you are an aficionado of the word game Scrabble, you probably know that there are only five words that can be played using a q but no u. In case you’re not in the know, those words are “faqir,” “qaid, “ “qoph, “ “qindar” and “qintar. “ ● In 1774, surveyors in Maryland marked off a parcel of land by mistake. The error was immortalized when the town that grew up on that land adopted the name Accident. ● The English word “mistletoe” comes from an Anglo-Saxon phrase that means “dung on a twig.” It seems that the branches where mistletoe is often found have white splotches on them, which some say resemble bird droppings. ● The martial art that is known today as karate actually originated in India and spread to China before becoming popular in 17th-century Japan, where it was dubbed karate, which means “empty hand” in Japanese. ● These days you’ll rarely see an elected official with a beard, but facial hair wasn’t always considered to be a liability in politics. In fact, it’s been reported that Abraham Lincoln was inspired to grow a beard while he was running for president in 1860 because of a letter from an 11-yearold girl. Grace Bedell wrote to Lincoln that a beard would make him “look a great deal better, for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers.” ● When the United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, the going price was 2 cents an acre. *** Thought for the Day: “Nothing gives an author so much pleasure as to find his works quoted by other learned authors.” -- Benjamin Franklin (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

• In a canyon behind the carved faces is a chamber, cut 70 feet into the rock, containing a vault with sixteen porcelain enamel panels. The panels include the text of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, biographies of the four presidents, a biography of Borglum, and an outline history of the United States. • Redevelopment work of the site was completed in 1998 with the addition of a modern Visitor Center, the Lincoln Borglum Museum, and the Presidential Trail. because of the roughness of the ride (shock absorbers would not come until later).
A few things about
Motorcycles
• In 1892, Alex Millet came up with a safety bicycle design that was a smoother ride with pneumatic tires and a five-cylinder rotary engine that was built into the rear wheel.
While they’re not made for soccer moms to haul kids and groceries, motorcycles are an ideal vehicle for the individual rider who wants easy transportation that is both economical and fun. • Most motorcycle riders have dusted off their bikes and ridden many miles by the time June rolls around. Not great for winters, especially in cold climates, motorcycles are a vehicle of choice for riders in summer. • The early predecessors to motorcycles and motor scooters were called “safety” bicycles, so named because they replaced the highwheeled bikes of the early 1800s that were hazardous and difficult to operate. The wheels on the newer bikes were both about the same size, making the bikes more stable and much easier to mount and dismount. • If a two-wheeled vehicle with steam propulsion is considered a motorcycle, then the first was the French Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede of 1868. “Velocipede” was the name given to early bicycles and tricycles. This was followed by the American Roper steam velocipede of 1869, built by inventor Sylvester H. Roper of Roxbury, Massachusetts. • Roper’s two-wheeled, steam-driven machine could carry one rider and enough coal to travel about 25 miles. He built a total of 10 examples of his invention and demonstrated the machines at fairs and circuses around the eastern U.S.
• The first powered two-wheeled vehicles that were patented and placed into production were built by Hildebrand & Wolfmueller in Munich, Germany, in 1894. They were also the first to give it the name “motorrad” (motorcycle). Hildebrand & Wolfmueller made more than 200 vehicles that used a twin cylinder watercooled engine and a step-through frame. • As the engines became more powerful and frame designs outgrew the bicycle origins, the number of motorcycle producers increased.

• In 1895, the French company DeDion-Buton revolutionized the motorcycle industry with its four-stroke engine that was capable of generating half a horsepower. The engine drew attention from motorcycle manufacturers worldwide and the new demand allowed the company to put their engines into mass production.

Tidbits of Coachella Valley
In my adult lifetime, my husband and I have paid close to $100,000 for insurance (automobile, homeowner, health, etc.). We’ve filed precious few claims; nowhere close to the premiums paid. Do I regret it? No! I am grateful we have not faced devastating tragedy. To me, food and survival supplies in reasonable amounts are just as much insurance as our policies that cover household disasters. These things give me peace of mind and assurance that I will be able to protect my property, my family and my life in the event of emergencies or disasters. Done reasonably, it’s not wacky. And, I intend to do everything in my power to encourage you to follow my lead.

income he had during the years we were married?
Q: My brother recently got a divorce. His ex-wife must have had a better lawyer than he did because she inserted language into the divorce decree specifying how much of his Social Security she will get. I believe it’s an extra $500 per month, and this is over and above what she will get through regular Social Security law on his account. Is there anything my brother can do to get out of this financial obligation? A: Your brother has nothing to worry about. And your former sister-in-law really didn’t have a better lawyer -- just a very naive one. There is no language that an attorney can scribble into a divorce decree that takes precedent over federal law. And that law prescribes exactly who is eligible for benefits as a divorced wife and how much she will get. In a nutshell, the rules say that a divorced woman will be eligible for somewhere between onethird to one-half of her ex husband’s Social Security benefit (depending on her age when she files for benefits) if she is at least 62 years old; if her husband is at least 62 years old; if she was married to him at least 10 years; if she is currently unmarried; and if she is not due higher benefits on her own Social Security record. So your ex sister-in-law won’t get a nickel more of your brother’s Social Security than what the law allows her to receive -- no matter what the divorce decree says. This situation is a bit of a twist on a much more common divorce decree issue I’ve dealt with many times in past columns. Normally, I hear from a divorced woman, who tells me that her husband inserted language into the divorce decree that says something like this: “My wife will not be eligible for any benefits as a former wife on my Social Security account.” Once again, that clause isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. A divorced wife will get exactly what Social Security law says she will get. But these greedy husbands may be relieved to hear that any benefits paid to their ex-wives do not take anything away from their own retirement payments. Nor if they remarried does the money paid to an ex offset any spousal benefits the new wife might be due on their accounts. One final point: Social Security also pays benefits to divorced husbands. But they rarely get such payments because their own Social Security retirement benefit is generally higher than anything they might be due from an ex-wife. * * *
Q: I was married to my ex husband for 30 years. I have not remarried, although he did. (He married the woman he was sleeping with while we were married!) Since our divorce, he has gotten a much higher paying position -- through his new wife’s family’s influences. I never worked outside the home because he wanted me to be home with our kids. So I don’t have a Social Security account of my own. He teasersSecurity log on to until says he won’t sign upFor formore Social www.TriviaGuy.com he’s at least 70 because he doesn’t need the money. Q: I am 65 years old. My husband recently died. We were married only 8 years. Friends tell me that I had to have been married for 10 years to qualify for widow’s benefits. Is this true?
A: No, it’s not true. The 10-year duration of marriage rule applies only to claims for benefits as a divorced wife or widow. But you were still married to your husband when he died, so you are eligible for widow’s benefits right now. You should contact your local Social Security office to file an application right away. Call them at 800-772-1213, or file online at www.socialsecurity.gov. And if you were married before, you will possibly have two options. You are certainly due widow’s benefits from the man you were recently married to, but if you can get higher benefits from a prior husband’s Social Security account, you will get those benefits instead. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@ comcast.net. Q:
I found among my collection of old books a 1949 copy and first edition of “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller. It was published by Viking. It has the original dust jacket with a small tear. Unfortunately, it is not signed by the author. Please let me know what you can find out about it. Is it worth anything?
A:
“Death of a Salesman” was a Pulitzer Prize winning play that has become an American classic. Joseph Hirsch designed the dust cover. Values for a 1949 first-edition copy start at $1,000 and go up to around $2,500, depending on the condition. Signed copies sell in the range of $4,500 to $10,000.

pion in ways far more complex than Sly Stallone’s Rocky did. His character is a classic portrayal of the hyper-hormonal, mentally mangled, girl-crazy highschool wrestler. Unlike Stallone’s Rocky, however, Modine’s Louden Swain actively pursues his fight with the seemingly unbeatable “Shute” and does so for classic guy reasons: Because he’s there and because Linda Fiorentino said so. Talia Shire, the Zooey Deschanel of her day, melted our hearts when she told Rocky to “win, Rocky, win.” Fiorentino (a native Philadelphian, by the way), lights us on fire when she breaks into the men’s locker room and orders Louden to stand up to Shute and “kick his a__.” Sure, some women might weaken legs, but the ones that fuel your desire and threaten to break your legs if you don’t win? All apologies to Mickey Goldmill, his well-tested theories and Jennifer Grey who, as “Baby” would never be caught dead in one, when it comes to a babe like Linda Fiorentino, it’s probably best to have her in your corner, ya know? • If you own or spend time around dogs you have probably observed them eating grass. Why do dogs do that? It’s a question that has plagued veterinarians for years, and there is no universally accepted answer. Some possible answers are that dogs simply like the taste of grass or that grass serves as a laxative by adding fiber to the dog’s diet. Veterinarians are generally unanimous in the belief that grass, untainted by pesticides, is not harmful to dogs.

• Two of the most important services rendered by grasses are those of a soil builder and a soil conservation agent. Oats, rye and ryegrass are often used as green manure and cover crops. A green manure crop is one that is grown and subsequently plowed under to build the soil. A cover crop is grown and left in place to flourish and prevent or reduce soil erosion. • Grasses have been researched and used as agents to clean up former industrial sites with contaminated soil. Specialists working with and refining this technology refer to it as phytoremediation. Generally, soil pollutants are either taken up by plants and the plants harvested and treated to render the pollutantladen plant material harmless, or the pollutants are degraded to something harmless in the plants’ root zone. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency recognizes this technology as viable in some environmental cleanup situations. • Citronella is a fragrant grass found in southeastern Asia. It is the source of citronella oil used in soaps, medicines and perfumes. • Now that you know more about grasses and the important roles they play in our lives, maybe you won’t grumble so much when it comes time to mow the lawn!

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
