BRAINY FACTS

(from page one)

interferes with transmission, and nerve cells actually shrink from the effects of stress. Deterioration has also been linked to drug use and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as exposure to chemicals used in certain pesticides. • The two hemispheres of the brain are bridged by the corpus callosum, tissue that enables the two parts to communicate. This part of the brain is 11 percent larger in those people who are ambidextrous — able to write with both hands. • The cerebellum, located at the base of the skull, coordinates muscle movements and balance. old granddaughter was spending the night and insisted on chocolate milk. I had no chocolate syrup but remembered how we used to make it when chocolate syrup was not available. I mixed one part powdered cocoa with two parts granulated sugar. I added a little milk and mixed until it formed a paste. I heated it for 15 seconds in the microwave to melt the sugar, and voila!, I had chocolate syrup. She was thrilled, and I felt quite clever. -- Saundra, Arizona

HAIR CLIP CURTAIN STAYS. I have lace curtains that I sometimes like to pull back. I use those tiny “alligator” hair clips with the teeth that you pinch to open. They’re less than an inch long and clear. I pull the curtain to the desired position and “clip” it back. When I want to close the lace curtain, I gently remove the clip and attach it onto the outside edge of the curtain so it’s there whenever I need it. These clips work great, and they’re virtually invisible. Another tip: They are also handy on a trip to pin motel room curtains closed. -- Bonnie, Michigan

By Matthew By Matthew Margolis Margolis

There’s a whole lot of fighting going on out there. I’ve had eight calls about dog aggression in the past week. Fighting outside the home, fighting inside the home, battling over toys, territory, food and other high-value resources, namely humans. One caller told the familiar tale of her two female dogs who have taken to fighting. She brought this terrible twosome into her home when they were 9 months old, and they spent their puppyhood peacefully playing together like loving sisters. As they grew older, the playing turned to fighting. Now Mom spends her days breaking up dogfights and trying to avoid getting bit in the process. Let’s talk about that for a minute: breaking up dogfights. How We do you do itdisinfect without losing a scoop, and remove y hand? Answer: Don’t use your poop hands.weekly Ever. for only $9.7 Most dogfights can be broken up with distractions. Throwing a blanket over the dogs is my preferred method. You could also bang pots and pans together or otherwise create a loud ruckus -but not with your voice. Yelling just serves to amp up an already intense situation. The noise should be something unfamiliar to the dogs. If a fight breaks out outside, spray the dueling hounds with a hose -- and use a strong spray. You aren’t cooling them down; you’re breaking it up. But the best way to break up a dogfight is to prevent it. Learn to recognize the early signs, and put the brakes on then. Get to know the triggers, and manage them. If your dogs fight over food, don’t feed them together, and don’t leave bowls of food on the floor when it’s not feeding time. Ditto with bones, treats and toys if those are a source of contention. If the triggers aren’t obvious and your dogs fight violently and for what appears to be no reason, you’re going to need the help of a dog behaviorist who specializes in aggression. And if the situation is serious, you might need to rehome one of the dogs. It isn’t fair or decent to make them live together if they are a threat to each other. Another caller has a 125-pound dog who, at 7 months old, attacked a pup over a bone. The owner spent the next four years trying to desensitize his dog by taking him to the park, giving him a bone CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

ADVERTISING PROOF 5:00 p.m.. Final Changes DUE: TUES., JULY 10

If someone has multiple myeloma, is there merit to coming to this medical school to be treated at a cost of traveling thousands of miles from home, spending time surrounded by strangers, living in motels and away from friends and family? In my view, if it is feasible, the sacrifices are worth it. Myeloma is quite rare, and because so many patients come to be treated at a single center, greater experience and understanding of the disease are acquired. Barlogie’s experience allows him to provide unique approaches to care, particularly for those patients where relapses have occurred and treatment has become more difficult. In these cases, care requires a physician scientist who truly makes the art of medicine a reality. But should a patient travel to a special center to receive treatment for the very common illnesses that afflict us? The American Cancer Society reports that in 2008, 12 million people were diagnosed with cancer. Of these, 2.6 million had breast cancer, 1.1 million colorectal cancer, 2.3 million prostate cancer and 400,000 had lung cancer. Compared with those numbers, 64,000 were diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Because of the large number of patients diagnosed with common cancers, every metropolitan center has specialists who can provide world-class, state-of-the-art care for these diseases, making traveling to a faraway major center unnecessary. For other common illnesses such as coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis or back pain, every community has experts equal to those found in even the most prestigious institutions. But how does a patient choose the right physician? Many insurance companies tout not requiring a referral to a specialist as a major benefit of their plan. Many of these visits are unnecessary, and frequently, the best specialist for the problem was not chosen. “My friend really liked him” and “I am fond of his mother” are not good reasons to seek an evaluation for a serious disease. Ideally, a patient should discuss the problem with a primarycare doctor and ask for a recommendation and then a referral. Helping a patient choose a specialist is a serious responsibility for any primary care physician. “I really like him as a person” is not a good reason to use a specific specialist. The referring

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

What’s Fair, and What’s Not Fair? What’s True, and What’s Not True? Q. I am 61 years old. My husband is only 51. I have worked most of my life and paid Social Security taxes for many years. And now I’ve learned that I will not be able to collect a dime of my Social Security until my husband is getting his own Social Security. This is totally unfair!

A. Yes, it would be totally unfair if it was true. But it’s not true. You can get your own Social Security retirement benefit, beginning as early as age 62, whether your husband is 51 or 151 ... or 21, for that matter. His age, and his Social Security eligibility, have nothing to do with your potential entitlement to benefits. It is true that you wouldn’t be able to collect any dependent wife’s benefits on his record until he is old enough for Social Security and getting his own monthly checks. But you are talking about your own monthly checks. And nothing about him and his Social Security has anything to do with you and your own Social Security retirement benefits. * * *

DECISIONS!

Q. You recently wrote a column where you mentioned a divorced woman getting benefits from her husband’s account. And he was still living. I think you are wrong. A divorced woman cannot get benefits from her ex husband’s record until he dies.

A. No, I’m not wrong. A divorced woman can get benefits on her ex husband’s Social Security record while he is still living. Any woman age 62 or older can get a dependent wife’s benefits on her husband’s Social Security retirement account IF she isn’t due higher benefits on her own Social Security record. And as explained in the answer to the prior question, a divorced woman may be able to get spousal benefits even if her ex isn’t getting Social Security himself yet. * * *

Some things are just too good to change...

A:

Jealousy among siblings is known to be a difficult issue to resolve and often extends its wrath for a lifetime. I am not a professional counselor, but hopefully, these thoughts may be of some help. Some psychologists believe jealousy is based on fears, which can originate from several things. They can include a lack of self-esteem, feelings of inferiority, overreaching one’s need for attention, no confidence in their ability to compete, and comparing themselves unfavorably to others. Unfortunately, any of these traits can become self-fulfilling as individuals allow them to become a permanent part of their personality into adulthood. A possible way to appeal to him is to point out that each of us is an individual gifted with talents others do not have. Is there some interest or ability he has that his brother does not? I have inherited my grandmother’s sterling silver coffee and tea ser vice. The set includes a large tray, coffee and teapots, a cream pitcher and a covered sugar bowl. I have enclosed a drawing of the mark that is on each piece. My grandmother bought the set about 50 years ago. I remember she saved her money for a ver y long time in order to buy it. I am proud to have inherited it and will pass it down to my daughters one day. Anything you can tell me about its histor y and value will be appreciated.

And he really did get the call. Despite what everyone in the world saw that night, Bradley beat Pacquiao in a split decision. Even Bradley looked stunned when the cards were read. Those close to the fight game took to the press and Twitter to voice their displeasure. “Bradley should have given the belt and announced victory to Paquiao right after the decision,” Oscar De La Hoya said after the bout. He wasn’t alone in sharing his consternation. The Donald, a self-described Twitter “critic” weighed in, too. “Manny Pacquiao was robbed in his title fight on Saturday night,” Trump wrote. “No wonder boxing is dying. Bring back the 15-round fights.” The WBO investigated. It put together an international panel of respected judges, and Pacquiao won on all five cards. Too bad that means nothing insofar as the belt is concerned. They drugtested Bradley. He’s clean. He even had to endure the indignity of listening to smack talk from WBA Welterweight Pauli Malignaggi (Pauli said he’d win if they fought, in case you were wondering). Personally, I’m not losing any sleep over Pacquiao’s loss. Bradley is the $11 champion, and the wife-beating felon, Phillipino crooner, Golden Boy and The Don have done nothing more than increase his value. Take it to them next time, Bradley.
