Rosa, the Caesar Salad was created on July 4th, 1924, when her father’s restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico, was very crowded. As supplies were running low, Caesar created salads tableside with what he had on hand. The good taste as well as the presentation were a hit and became a part of food history! The dressing was made available commercially in 1948 under the name “Cardini’s: The Original Caesar Dressing.”

THE FRENCH QUARTER (from page 2)

● The ancient Egyptians were known to use crocodile dung as a contraceptive. ● You may be surprised to learn that when the hit 1950s TV show “I Love Lucy” had its premiere, Lucille Ball was already 40 years old. ● Talk about sneaky: In order to get a photo of Bing Crosby in his coffin, The National Enquirer tabloid had a reporter dress as a priest and sneak into the private funeral service. To top it off, on his way out of the service, the disguised journalist told ABC reporter Geraldo Rivera not to pester the family at such a sensitive moment.

• The Cabildo, St. Louis Cathedral and the Presbytere (also part of the museum complex) all surround Jackson Square. Originally called “Place d’Armes,” the Square was renamed in 1856 after Andrew Jackson, a hero of the Battle of New Orleans. An equestrian statue of Jackson stands in the center.

● Are you acersecomic? If your hair has never been cut, you are. ● Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was not himself a slave owner. He reportedly did not believe in the institution of slavery. ● If this is an average week, three manmade artifacts hurtling into the atmosphere from space will crash into the Earth. *** Thought for the Day: “The world is round; it has no point.” -- Adrienne E. ● Every year, about $500 million is spent on beads for Mardi Gras. ● Ever wonder how the statuette taken home by winners of the Academy Awards got its nickname? Evidently, in 1931 a secretary at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences saw the statuette for the first time and exclaimed, “Why, he reminds me of my Uncle Oscar!” The comment struck the fancy of a reporter who was present, and he put it in a story about the awards, and the name stuck.

• Although some streets in the Quarter experienced minor flooding and several buildings experienced a significant amount of wind damage, most of the major landmarks suffered only minor damage. The Quarter also escaped almost all of the looting and violence that followed the storm. Nearly all of the antique shops and art galleries in the French Quarter, for example, were untouched. 

● It was beloved American comedian and film star Groucho Marx who made the following sage observation: “There’s one way to find out if a man is honest -- ask him. If he says ‘Yes,’ you know he is a crook.”

• Over 35,000 buildings in New Orleans, many in the French Quarter, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cabildo has been called the second most important building in America, after Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Mass resistance group toward survival and, hopefully, the kicking of some alien butt off the planet Earth. ***

Q:

What has Shaquille O’Neal been up to lately? -- Roger G., Franklin, Miss.

A: Q:

I heard a rumor that Steven Tyler won’t be back as a judge on “American Idol.” Please tell me it isn’t true. He’s one of the main reasons that I watch the show! -- Diana W. in West Virginia

A:

The Aerosmith rocker recently announced he will indeed quit the show to focus on the band. Steven said, in true Steven style: “I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress, ‘American Idol,’ before she boils my rabbit. I Steven Tyler strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back.” His news came the day before Jennifer Lopez announced that she, too, was leaving the show. I’ll tell you, I wouldn’t mind seeing Richard Marx and Debbie Gibson in the judges’ chairs. ***

Shaq just signed on to star in a new series for truTV tentatively titled “Upload with Shaquille O’Neal.” The show will be hosted by comedian Gary Owen and co-star Shaq and comedian Godfrey, as well as a special guest for each of the 10 episodes. They will scour the Internet looking for the funniest online videos to comment on, and they’ll also create their own viral videos, pull pranks and parody current pop-culture stories. Shaq had this to say about his new venture: “I’ve been a fan of truTV for a long time, and I look forward to working with my good friends Gary Owen and Godfrey. I’ve always tried to entertain people, and I know this show will deliver big laughs.” ***

Q:

I remember a while back that Kelsey Grammer announced he and his wife were expecting. Has she had her baby yet? -- Barbara D., via e-mail

A:

Kelsey, 57, and Kayte, 31, announced earlier this year that the ecstatic couple were expecting twins. Kayte gave birth to a healthy baby girl in mid-July, but tragically, the baby’s twin brother did not survive. The couple said in a joint statement: “A glorious birth with a lingering sadness is ours today. We choose to celebrate the life that has been given us. We proudly introduce our Faith (Evangeline Elisa Grammer) to the world today looking forward to the days ahead and the children yet to come.”

Old-car Conundrum Dear Mary: My husband and I have decided to buy a new car, but now we’re not sure what to do with our old one. Doing a dealer trade-in is the easiest option, but I know we could get more for it by selling it ourselves. What should we do? ® -- Dora, Texas

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Dear by Dora: The difference between the Mary Hunt amount a dealer will give you on a trade-in (the wholesale value) and the retail value (selling it privately) can be as much as 20 percent. Let’s say in your case the difference is $2,000. Even if it takes 20 hours of your time to get your car ready to sell, list and show -- that’s $100 an hour tax-free money for the hassle. Something to consider, for sure. Visit the Kelley Blue Book website (www.kbb.com) to calculate both the retail and trade-in values for your specific area. Be sure to read their articles on selling a car. This will give you the information and confidence you need to make the best decision. *** Dear Mary: Whenever I pay a bill, I keep the statement “just in case.” I’ve been doing this for years and now have a huge stack, including pay stubs. When can I toss these, and how should I do it? -- Tom, Illinois Dear Tom: Keep pay stubs for at least one year so you can reconcile them against both your W-2 Wage and Tax Statement and your Social Security Earnings Statement. If your records do not match theirs, you’ll be happy to have your pay stubs to prove your withholding. As for receipts and records of bills paid, keep them only as long as the situation is active. A

paid water bill is no longer active, but the receipt for your new water heater is. You can also confidently destroy statements for closed accounts, expired warranties and cancelled checks for items that are not proof of purchase. Remember that you’ll want to shred everything. *** Dear Mary: My husband and I are going to Europe on vacation. Our travel agent has suggested we get traveler’s insurance in case any arrangements fall through. Is it really worth the expense? -- Kelly, Florida Dear Kelly: You need it, but “travel insurance” can be expensive and inadequate. Read the fine print. If you pay for your travel far in advance, consider trip cancellation insurance should you get sick or injured and cannot go. Next, review the insurance you have already. Homeowners insurance typically covers the loss or theft of personal effects. Your auto insurance might cover your rental car. Review your health insurance for traveling abroad. You may be covered for travel by the credit card you used to buy your tickets, or you might be eligible for really cheap supplemental coverage through that company. Once you are Ad Proof: certain of what you need beyond what you have John Cuddihy - Flags “A” Flying already, supplement as necessary. Flag Thief Identified

When I first heard the news item, I was outraged: Over the course of three days, 75 American flags were stolen from a veterans cemetery. Upon further investigation, I was chuckling ... almost. In New York, in the Civil War section of the Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson, flags had gone missing, and people were justifiable angry. Only the flag portions were missing, not the wooden poles, which remained pushed into the ground. The latest theft was discovered just hours after a meeting of local officials, veterans and police to address the topic of stolen flags -- because it had happened before at the same cemetery. Something had to be done. Upon learning of the new damage, police set up cameras to attempt to nail the culprit in the flag thefts. What they found on the video had them scratching their heads: A woodchuck, also knows as a groundhog, was seen pulling down the flags and Do you have a question for Mary? lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

Affordable Care Act Poses Financial Puzzle Whether you are celebrating or upset, it is clear that for the moment the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. Americans, liberal and conservative, have significant reservations for numerous different reasons. For many it is the cost. For those with Medicare, it may be concerns that their benefits will be reduced to meet the health care needs of the uninsured. Others worry that the law will ruin the best health care system in the world. (If only that were true. The health of Americans ranks last among developed countries.) There is consensus about what most of us favor. Almost universally we believe that young people who are in school or working in jobs without insurance should remain on their parents’ insurance until they are 26. We believe that no one should be denied access to insured care because of the presence of a pre-existing condition. This is a no-brainer. Preexisting conditions make movement from one job to another difficult. And for those who lose a job, getting re-employed becomes impossible. Most agree that all children need preventive care and if they become ill, deserve adequate medical treatment. In Arkansas, the percentage of our residents who are disadvantaged and poor is very high. Many are gainfully employed and hardworking but currently have no access to affordable health care insurance. These people have a shorter life expectancy, suffer from many chronic diseases, and go to the emergency room too often for minor problems and too late for serious ones that can lead to financial ruin and more. Paradoxically, being uninsured and ill is very costly. For these reasons, it is fair to

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Columnist’s “Ivory Tower” Is in the Basement of a Suburban Split Level Q.

How does it feel sitting there in your ivor y tower with all the trappings of power ser ving as a mouthpiece for the Obama Administration? Why should I believe anything you say? After all, you’re paid to mislead people about the corrupt workings of the Social Security system!

A.

Wow -- I must admit that little diatribe came out of the blue! It followed an exchange of emails I recently had with a reader. It’s a totally ridiculous accusation. But I bring it up only because many readers think I work for the Social Security Administration and that I am some kind of spokesperson for the agency. I am not. And I certainly am not a “mouthpiece for the Obama Administration.” The person who sent me this email, along with more than a few other readers, believe that I have an office in an ivory tower somewhere in Washington D.C.; that I get my daily marching orders either directly from the president or certainly from the head of the Social Security Administration; and that I’m paid handsomely to mislead people into falling for the failed policies of a doomed social program. Let me paint a more realistic picture for you. I’m a frumpy old retired government employee, eking out an existence on a modest civil service pension, living with my wife of 40 years in a split level home in Colorado -- and sometimes at a beach bungalow in San Diego. My “ivory tower” office is a desk in our basement. The “trappings of power” that surround me include grandkids’ toys and a 25-year-old couch permanently sticky and stained by the spills of both my kids and now my grandkids. It is true that I once was a spokesperson for the Social Security Administration. I worked for SSA for 32 years, and for part of that time, I served as the agency’s deputy press officer. But I retired about seven years ago. I started writing this column while I still worked for SSA. I no longer was in the agency’s press office when I wrote the column, and I never had to get official clearance for any column I wrote while I still worked for the government. Despite that fact, I guess you could say that while I was still working for SSA, this column was a quasi-official mouthpiece for the organization. At least I certainly dared not write anything that was against agency policy or that would upset my bosses! But that all changed the day I retired in 2005. From that point on, I was no longer a spokesperson (some might argue an “apologist’) for the Social Security system or the agency that runs the program. Instead, I was just a retired old goat who knew a lot about the inner workings of Social Security and who was eager to share his knowledge with the readers of this column. And I can tell you that I breathed a huge sigh of relief on the day I retired. Not only because more teasers log on to nightI wouldn’t have to fightForSouthern California’s www.TriviaGuy.com marish traffic to get to work each day. But because I was now free to “tell it like to is” -- to explain Social Security rules without having to worry about any “spin” that SSA’s political leaders might want to put on the program. And because I would be able to

Yet some people still want to believe that I a formal (and legal) decision as opposed to simply am some kind of paid “flack” for the government. As someone’s opinion. And now, if you’ll excuse me, my wife is askan example, let me explain what led to the diatribe ing me to come down out of my ivory tower to take that began this column. (Those rules vary from state to state, so I can’t just list them here.) If you have even one dollar more than the rules allow, you’re simply not eligible for benefits. That reaffirmation of the SSA’s Property of reps denial of his claim is what set him off. Q:

This mark can be seen on my set of porcelain dinnerware. It was handed down to me from my great-grandmother. I am 80, so this set must be over 100 years old. Originally, the set was a ser vice for 12, but over the years, many pieces were broken and some are missing, so the set is not complete. There are 50 dishes left in the set, including ser ving pieces. Each dish has scalloped edges and is decorated with pink floral bands around the perimeter, as well as in the center. They are beautiful and in pristine condition. What can you tell me about my china?

A:

Haviland China was established in Limoges, France, in 1864. American businessman, David Haviland, founded it. The company remained in the family until around 1972 when it was taken over by the financial and industrial company, FIDEL. In 1988, it was bought by Dominque de Coster and is

to the NFC Championship game. In other seasons he averaged $6 million per year -- still a lot but not nearly what he was worth. He considered last season an act of faith on his part. Fans might be skeptical -- every team has been burned by a player coming off of a career year. Still, it was some year. He set NFL singleseason records with 468 completions, 5,476 yards passing and a 71.2 completion percentage. The Saints set a record for total offense and led the league in home attendance, where they went undefeated. New Orleans, despite its outlandish partying reputation, is actually a pretty blue-collar town. And Brees is the kind of guy you see walking around eating a sandwich in New Orleans (he owns a sandwich shop there) or pumping his own gas (as reported by TMZ on an apparently slow paparazzi day). He’s a self-avowed family man who just happened to win a Super Bowl. “I think it’s very easy to sit back and say ‘this is ridiculous,’” Brees admitted. “[But] I feel like with a contract like this, people can say ‘they are paying you what you earned or what you deserved.’ ... It’s just about representing our team and city the right way.” Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City.

EAT YOUR GREENS! (from page page 3) “iceberg” when folks would meet the train cars of ice-packed lettuce with calls of “The icebergs are coming!” The nickname stuck, and Americans’ love of fresh salads grew with the fresh availability. • Up until the mid-1970s, more than 95 percent of all lettuce grown in the United States was iceberg. Even though leaf lettuces have surged in popularity in the last 30-40 years, iceberg still remains a big seller. So, the next time you are eating out, check to see if a “wedge” salad is offered. It will be the familiar iceberg we grew up with. •

Another popular salad that some assume started with Julius Caesar is the Caesar Salad. It actually had its start in Tijuana, Mexico, with Caesar Cardini, who immigrated to the San Diego area from Italy with his brother, Alex, after World War I. The brothers opened Caesar’s Restaurant in Tijuana instead of San Diego because of alcohol prohibition in the United States.

• Invented in the 1920s, the Caesar Salad was for years mostly just a California specialty, with romaine lettuce being the green. The popularity of Caesar salads soared in the 1970s, and the romaine crop grew from a few California acres to 16,000 acres in the 1990s and more than 80,000 acres today. 

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
