TURN UP THE HEAT!

caust was used to conduct air heated by wood furnaces through empty spaces under floors and out of pipes in walls. Hypocaust literally means “fire beneath.” The systems were mainly used for private homes and public baths. • The Royal Monastery of Our Lady of the Wheel, founded in 1202 on the Ebro River in Spain, contains an excellent example of a type of central heating. The Cistercian monks used river diversions combined with indoor woodfired furnaces to heat the large building. • Fast-forward a bit in history, and Benjamin Franklin, a famous American of many talents and achievements, invented the Franklin Stove in the 1740s. His stoves heated twice the space using less wood than fireplaces and were equipped to take in fresh air and minimize smoke. Another inventor, David Rittenhouse, improved on Franklin’s design with an L-shaped exhaust pipe. The stoves became popular all over America and Europe. • The Franklin stove and other wood stoves helped heat homes more efficiently since the stoves generated heat in all directions around their iron bodies. They typically used only one quarter the amount of wood needed for a standard fireplace while producing twice as much heat. They did present a safety hazard, however, ADVERTISING since touching any part of the stove’s PROOF hot surfaces gave good reason not to do it again. • When a Russian businessman of Polish descent, Franz San Galli, invented the traditional castiron radiator in the mid-1800s, his water-based heating system was soon in high demand. His radiator system relied on a boiler located in the basement to heat water and produce steam. The hot steam was carried through pipes throughout the building and coiled through radiators located in each room needing heat. Some older homes today still use these types of heating systems. San Galli’s invention contributed significantly to the modern heating systems used today.

a characteristic of the Arctic Tundra is that it is generally treeless and barren. Just like arid deserts, tundra areas receive very little precipitation. By Samantha Weaver

● During this election season, it might be good to keep in mind the following sage observation, made by beloved humorist Will Rogers: “The American people are generous and will forgive almost any weakness with the exception of stupidity.” ● Mountain goats aren’t actually goats; they’re antelopes. ● Those who study such things say that a mosquito flaps its wings 1,000 times every second.

● You might be surprised to learn that some ants can live more than 15 years. ● Yes, there’s a name for it. The next time you’re opening a bottle of wine, take a moment to consider the spiral part that is inserted into the cork: It’s known as a worm.

● If you’ve ever been to London -- or if you’ve seen a movie that was set there -- you might remember the iconic black taxicabs that are ubiquitous in that city; the high roofs set them apart from other vehicles on the streets. The extra headroom did once serve a purpose. When the cars were originally designed, top hats were still de rigueur for a properly dressed gentleman, and the high roofs allowed a man so attired to enter and leave the vehicle without knocking off his hat.

• Arctic foxes, snow geese, polar bears, gray wolves, caribou (also known as reindeer) and musk-oxen live in the Arctic Tundra. There are also Arctic hares, known by many as “snowshoe rabbits,” lemmings, snowy owls and more. Some mammals and birds actually turn white in the winter and brown in the summer to provide camouflage protection against predators. The permafrost of the tundra prevents most animals from hibernating in underground burrows in the winter.

SOME STEAMY FACTS ABOUT

HOT SPRINGS There are some 1,600 natural hot springs found in the United States according to a list published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Many exist in Canada as well. Come along as we take a dip in some refreshing hot water! • Hot springs are found where hot groundwater flows out of the earth. The springs form when water seeps through hot subterranean volcanic rocks, which can heat the water to the boiling point, 212° F (100° C). This heated water, which may contain a variety of minerals, then flows under pressure up to the earth’s surface. • Individual springs will vary greatly in size, in the amount of water discharged, and the types and quantity of minerals present in the water. Many larger springs located in the Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada are the result of long fissures in sedimentary rock. • Some mineral springs distinguish themselves from regular “hot springs” by touting the minerals present in their waters. To be classified officially as a mineral spring it must contain

a reading of 400 parts per million of total dissolved solids. • Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park in western Alberta was named for the small traces of radon in the water, which makes it the most radioactive spring in North America. The level of radon, however, is too low to make it a health concern. The water is rich in silica, magnesium, sulphate, fluoride, calcium and bicarbonate. The water temperature ranges from 98.4° to 113.9° F in odorless pools that are surrounded by natural rock walls. Radium Hot Springs boasts Canada’s largest mineral pool as well as an 82-foot-long cool pool that even features a diving board. • Nestled in the foothills of Joshua Tree National Park, Desert Hot Springs, California, boasts numerous spas, resorts and hotels where visitors come from great distances to enjoy the soothing and theraputic effect of its naturally heated spring waters. The hot springs were first discovered in 1913 by early homesteader Cabot Yerxa, who discovered flowing hot water at a location later named Miracle Hill. Due to the San Andreas Fault bisecting the area, one side has cold water, while the other has hot. • Hot Springs National Park, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, is well known for its bathhouses, health spas and hotels built to take advantage of the natural underground springs. One of the smallest national parks in the country, it is also considered one of the most unique.

Page 5

• The city of Hot Springs itself is the only city in America within a national park. Nicknamed “The American Spa,” the park includes the area known as “Bathhouse Row,” which is a National Historic Landmark District. The park also contains miles of trails, campsites and picnic areas in the surrounding Ouachita Mountains. • Many hot springs are not developed as destinations but are left for hikers, cross country skiers and horseback riders to explore. For example, northeast of Vancouver, B.C., is Pitt River Hot Springs. Many say it is the best, most pristine hot springs in British Columbia, partly because the difficult access keeps it unspoiled and protected from an onslaught of visitors. The springs have two small pools that are kept filled by waterfalls overhead, and the icy cold Pitt River flows close beside them. Two ropes are used to climb down steep rocks to gain access to the hot springs, which eliminates all but the most hardy and agile visitors. • Wherever you happen to live, there is likely to be some hot springs within a day’s drive from you. Make it a point to go exploring and see what wonders of nature you will discover! ■ CLIP AND SAVE

Somewhere in the middle of the falling costs of homes and the rising costs of rentals is the tipping point where it becomes more cost effective to buy. Those calculations will vary depending on your location and situation. Buying a home can be a positive step if 1) you are financially stable, 2) you plan to stay in your home for at least five years, and 3) you do your homework first. Look online at www.bankrate.com and search for the “rent versus buy” calculator. Go through the dozen questions as a place to start to see if you’re a good candidate for buying. Do a “rent ratio” calculation. Take the price of a home similar to one you’d like to buy, and divide that by how much the rent would be for one year. A ratio of 15 or under indicates that buying would be better. High than 20 indicates that renting would be better. For example, if the home you’d like to buy is selling for $100,000 but would rent for $850 a month, the calculation becomes $100,00 divided by $10,200, which comes to under 10, well within the range where it’s smarter to buy. Be sure to add the cost of renter’s insurance. To get a broad-brush picture of whether it’s better to rent or buy in your area, check Trulia, the real-estate site that analyzes homes from the national level down to the neighborhood. Go online to Google and put this in the search box: Trulia Insights rent versus buy. The top four links in the list are the ones that will be most helpful. For example, Trulia’s research indicates that in 72 percent of buying areas, it’s better to buy than rent. If you buy, remember the standard caveats: Only accept a fixed loan. Don’t be lulled by initial lower rates into taking on a mortgage that can increase to an unknown amount in the future.

All four seasons of “Flashpoint” have aired in the U.S. on Ion Television (check your local listings for channel info). The network recently announced that it has renewed “Flashpoint” for a 13-episode fifth season, which will begin shooting in February. CBS also aired the show here and there (as a midseason replacement or to fill an empty slot when needed) but the series has no set schedule on that network. “Flashpoint” centers on a highly skilled tactical team, trained in negotiating and getting inside the subject’s head to understand the emotional breaking point (the “flashpoint”) that triggered the crisis. The series stars Hugh Dillon, Enrico Colantoni and Amy Jo Johnson. ***

Pond in the hit sci-fi series, can be seen next month on Ovation television in the network’s first original movie, “We’ll Take Manhattan.” The movie -- which airs Saturday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. ET -- is set in the 1960s world of fashion photography and is based on a true story. It follows upstart photographer David Bailey as he persuades British Vogue to hire his unknown model “Dr. Who” star Karen Gillan and girlfriend, Jean Shrimpton (played by Karen), for a major fashion photography layout in Manhattan. Over the course of the shoot, they shatter every established rule of fashion photography, outraging Vogue fashion editor Lady Clare Rendlesham (played by Helen McCrory of “Harry Potter” fame). ***

Free Checking Accounts Are Still Out There Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Many bank customers have been feeling ® nickeled-and-dimed by their banks for some time. And as banks scramble to make up for lost revenue, some are demanding even steeper fees. The by Mary Hunt country’s largest banks are charging consumers as much as $50 a month if they do not maintain minimum balances or meet other requirements for certain high-end checking and savings accounts. What lunacy! Why should we pay a cent to have access to our own money? While free bank accounts are disappearing, there are still a few out there. You just have to know where to look. Hint: Credit Unions. While not all credit unions offer free accounts, many still do. In doing research for this column, I have discovered one that’s even better than free! Firstmark Credit Union (www.firstmarkcu. org) has one of the best free checking accounts I have ever seen. Firstmark is located in Texas, but anyone can join regardless of where they live or work. What makes a Firstmark Credit Union checking account even better than free? Customers use their debit card (unlike your humble Adwho Proof: columnist) earn 10 cents for every signature-based M & B Consignment Center debit-card transaction. You can also earn $25 1/12 pg.,by4c, 13x discount rate bonuses receiving statements online, using their debit paying one bill with online bill pay and Dec.card, 25, 2011 • (Vol. 7: #52) signing up for direct deposit. Do all four (use promo code GET100) and you can have $100 added to Corrections your balance. due by: 3 PM, Wed. 12/21/11 But there’s more: Firstmark’s free checking account pays 0.10 percent APY on your balance --

not much, but better than nothing. Firstmark offers 11 local branches in the San Antonio area, but anyone can join online. Go to www.FirstMarkCU.org, and click on “Open a Free Checking Account.” On the next page, look for “Become a Member.” In that list, select “Other Eligible Groups.” Use the pulldown menu and select “None of the above.” Whew! You’re almost there. Ready for another bonus? You can join Firstmark by becoming a member of the Friends of the Park Foundation, a charitable group that supports the San Antonio Parks Foundation. Firstmark takes care of your first year’s dues, and you’re under no obligation to renew your membership for a second year. This means you qualify for membership at Firstmark by being a member of the Friends of the Park Foundation. And the best part? Once you are a credit union member, you will enjoy “Once a Member, Always a Member.” You’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of Firstmark Credit Union for the rest of your life, including free checks, too. Firstmark is part of the Allpoint network, which provides its members free use of 35,000 ATMs nationwide and 43,000 around the world. All of the ATMs in 7-Eleven, Target, Walgreens and Costco, for example, belong to Allpoint. If you’re paying even a dime in bank fees, ask yourself this question: Why? Then get busy finding a better alternative that won’t cost you. It just might pay you to make the switch, too!

TURN UP THE HEAT! (from page page 3) forming sheets of tin into ducts that they could run through ceilings and floors, they were able to drive the heated air for long distances using an electric fan at the heating source. The forced air concept now allowed heat to be evenly distributed over a wide area, even in large homes and buildings. The new system proved to be superior to all other methods and revolutionized the entire heating industry. • HVAC systems (heating, ventilating and airconditioning) have been around for quite a while. As far back as 1901, Alfred Wolff designed a large system for heating, cooling and humidity control at the New York Stock Exchange. The term “air-conditioning” was not used until Stuart Cramer, a textile engineer from North Carolina, coined the term in 1906. • Our options for heating today are many. We can have electric forced-air heat; ceiling or floor cable heating; natural gas, oil or propane; fireplace inserts; woodstoves; heat pumps; and more. Most households heat with natural gas, with electricity coming in second, and smaller numbers using fuel oil and propane. • Thermostats allow us to program our heat to be as warm or cool as we want at specific times of the day or night. If you stop cold air leaks around windows and doors, the efficiency of your system will be greatly enhanced. But if you really want to save money, turn your thermostat down and wear a sweater! ■

If anyone thought the new year would bring about a refreshing wave of truth and honesty on the Internet, well, then he is about as gullible as the people who believe the latest bit of trash that’s floating around out there in cyberspace. I’d guess about fifty of my readers sent me the following message and asked me to comment on it. Here is what the message says: “This is another example of Medicare ripping off seniors. The per-person Medicare (Part B) insurance premium will increase from the present monthly fee of $96.40; rising to: $104.20 in 2012; $120.20 in 2013; and $247 in 2014. These are provisions incorporated in the legislation, purposely delayed so as not to confuse the 2012 re-election campaigns. Please send this to all seniors that you know, so they will know who’s throwing them under the bus.” My regular readers know that I don’t normally wade into the muddy waters of Medicare. I prefer to deal with Social Security issues. But this latest Internet whopper is so outrageously wrong that I just have to set the record straight. I hardly know where to begin. First, there are no proposed Part B Medicare premium increases for future years. So the premium is not set to go up to any of the amounts listed, and certainly not to the quoted “$247 in 2014.” In fact, they only recently announced the 2012 Part B premium. The basic premium for 2012 is $99.90. And that’s actually a decrease compared to the 2011 premium rate of $115.40 and the 2010 premium rate of $110.50. In fact, the 2012 premium is back down near the 2009 rate, which was $96.40. And by the way, the 2012 decrease is a direct result of savings generated by the “Affordable TUES., JAN.Care 4 Act.” In other words, this latest Internet fantasy view carefully. ANTIQUE -- OR -JUNQUE by Anne McCollam Creators News Service

Victorian Ladies Feathered Their Nests Q:

I am sending you a photo of an antique feather wreath that was a gift to me from my aunt in 1947. It is in the original mahogany wood, shadow box and the overall measurements are approximately 28 inches by 26 inches. Each feather was hand cut and varies in color from beige to white. Silk ribbon, rather than the floral tape that is used today, was used to bind the feather grouping. The olive green velvet background is not the original. It was replaced in 1954 due to extensive damage to the original. I would like to sell my wreath, since my children do not want it. Any suggestions that you have will be appreciated.

I own a 1938 cobalt blue glass pitcher that stands over 4 inches tall. On the side of the pitcher is a picture of Shirley Temple. She is wearing a striped blouse under a jacket. Her name is written across her blouse. It is in mint condition. Can you tell me about my pitcher and what it might be worth?

Feather wreaths were created by Victorian ladies to decorate their homes.

A:

Creating feather wreaths, as well as hair wreaths, was a popular craft in the Victorian era, from around 1860 to the 1880s. Ladies would gather feathers and arrange them in round or oval wreaths and showcase them in elegant shadowboxes. Although some were decorative, some were mourning wreaths made to commemorate the death of a family member. Similar wreaths have been seen selling on eBay in the range of $500 to $700.

Professional Golf Tips Tina Mickelson

Achieving desired trajectory Sometimes we are faced with a shot where we need a little higher or lower trajectory than we might expect with our selected club. Rather than taking a different club to accommodate desired trajectory instead of desired distance, try this: Higher trajectory: If you want your shot to have a little higher trajectory take your normal stance, set up to the ball and turn your head, looking up in the sky to the point where you want your ball to go. Hold that position, turning your head back to the ball. As you turn to look high in the sky, a few things will happen. Your right shoulder will lower a little bit, your swing path will be a little more shallow, and some of your weight will shift to your right side. All of this will promote a more lofted shot. Lower trajectory: Set up to the ball with your normal address. Turn your head to view your intended ball flight, making sure you don’t look above your intended line. By keeping your head low your shoulders will remain level and your weight will remain evenly distributed. This promotes a steeper swing, which causes a delofted club face at impact. The result is lower trajectory.
