names on small pieces of paper, folded them into bits of clay and dropped them all into a pond. The first piece of paper to loosen from the clay and rise to the top would supposedly bear the name of the woman’s true love. • In the 18th-century, some unmarried women pinned five bay leaves to the center and four corners of their pillows on February 13. According to tradition, that night they would dream of their future husband. Some recited a verse before sleep: “Good Valentine, be kind to me, in dreams let me my true love see.” Perhaps this is where we derive the expression “the man of my dreams”? • Another old Valentine custom had men write women’s names on bits of paper and place them in a jar. Each man drew a paper, and that woman was the man’s Valentine. He spent the day paying special attention to her and bestowing small gifts, often a pair of gloves. Some of the men pinned the lady’s name to their shirtsleeve and wore it for several days, “wearing their hearts on their sleeves.”

WASHINGTON MONUMENT (from page 2)
● You’ve probably never heard of the Spanish village of Lijar, located in the south of that country. This village, though, was involved in a nearly 100year war that lasted well into the 20th century. It seems that in 1883, Alfonso XII, the king of Spain, made a state visit to Paris and received a less-than-royal welcome. Led by mayor Don Miguel Garcia Saez, the citizens of Lijar, after hearing that their monarch had been insulted and possibly accosted by mobs, declared war on France. Though there were no casualties -- not even any gunfire -- the war lasted until 1981. That was when the town council ruled that it would end hostilities with France thanks to the warm welcome King Juan Carlos of Spain received in France in 1976. ● The town of Adamant, Vermont, was once named Sodom. The townspeople voted to change the name in 1905. ● The first portable computer was made available to the public in 1975. In this instance, however, “portable” was used as a relative term; the IBM 5100 weighed 55 pounds. ● Only 5 percent of American men report that they feel satisfied with their looks. With women, it’s only 1 percent. ● In 2008, a study was conducted in the United Kingdom to determine what, if any, effect the consumption of tomatoes had on the human body’s reaction to sun exposure. The university students enrolled in the study who consumed the equivalent of about five tomatoes per day were 33 percent less likely to get sunburned than those who ate no tomatoes. *** Thought for the Day: “Several excuses are always less convincing than one.” -- Aldous Huxley (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Minnie Pearl had these thoughts on marriage: “Getting married’s a lot like getting into a tub of hot water. After you get used to it, it ain’t so hot.”
“Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing,” said the German writer Goethe. Let’s take a look at that universal phenomenon that “makes the world go ‘round.” • Courtship during Victorian times had definite rules of etiquette, and according to one authority of those times, the lady “is not to allow the young gentleman to kiss you until he has proposed marriage.” Of course, there were those who disagreed, such as the expert who advised that, “The prudent maiden should not allow her lover to kiss her even after their engagement. Not until after marriage should such a favor be granted.” • The fourth finger of the left hand became the “ring finger” for wedding rings because of a tradition stating that a delicate nerve ran from that finger to the heart.
• One woman expressed her feelings for her man on a recently seen bumper sticker: “All men are idiots, and I married their king.” Comedian Rodney Dangerfield had a similar attitude: “My wife and I were happy for 20 years. Then we met.” • One Mexico City couple apparently believed in long engagements. In 1902, when Octavio Guillen and Adriana Martinez were both 15, they became engaged. They remained so for 67 years until 1969 when they married at 82. • Although Britney Spears’ first marriage lasted just 55 hours, and one of Patty Duke’s marriages only 13 days, not every Hollywood marriage is doomed to fail. Bob Hope was married 69 years, James Cagney for 63 years, and Charlton Heston, 65 years. • Age seems to have nothing to do with marriage success. Wisconsin’s Simon and Ida Stern dissolved their marriage in 1984. He was 97; she was 91. Britain’s Bertie and Jessie Woods called it quits in 2008; both were 97 at the time.

10 p.m. ET. With the show’s creator and executive producer being Shonda Rhimes, who also is behind the powerhouse series “Grey’s Anatomy,” you can bet there will be plenty of edge-of-your-seat drama to keep you coming back each week. ***
Q: I know you’ve mentioned this be-
fore, and ever y now and then I hear teases about it, but are they ever going to make a “24” movie? -- Gerry D., via e-mail
Q:
I was watching an old episode of “Dexter” from season one and was thrilled to see Tony Goldwyn as a guest star that episode. What has he been doing lately? I know he’s done a lot of behind-the-scenes work, but I’d love to see his handsome face on screen soon. -- Ginger F., Madison, Wisc.
A: Well, you
won’t have to wait too long, Ginger, because Tony is one of the stars of the new ABC drama “Scandal.” The show centers on Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington), a former communications director to the president of the United States (Tony Goldwyn), who left Tony Goldwyn the White House to open her own prominent crisis-management firm. She’s hoping to start a new chapter in her life -- both professionally and personally -- but she can’t seem to completely cut ties with her past. “Scandal” premieres Thursday, April 5, at

told reporters at a Television Critics Association press event about the planned movie: “Hopefully we’ll begin shooting at the end of April, beginning of May.” So, while that’s about all the details anyone can offer at this point, at least it’s something, and if we cross our fingers, maybe this movie will see the light of day by fall 2012 or early 2013. ***

to keep this one going? -- Jeremy W., via e-mail
A:
You’re in luck. The History Channel recently announced that its top-rated competition series hosted by Colby Donaldson will be back for a fourth season starting Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 10 p.m. ET. The show promises more twists and history-inspired challenges than ever before. But unless your lady is into the show, I’d suggest taking her out to dinner for Valentine’s Day and DVR-ing the show to watch once she’s gone. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
Q:
Are the rumors of a Van Halen reunion true? If so, is it with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar as the frontman? -- Steve V., Akron, Ohio
A: Those rumors are not rumors, Steve.
They are cold, hard facts: Van Halen, with David Lee Roth, is back with a new album and upcoming tour. The album is called “A Different Kind of Truth” and will be released Feb. 7, with the debut single, “Tattoo” already getting airplay. The band starts touring Feb. 18, so check online to see when they are coming to your town. Hopefully they’ll stay friendly with each other long enough to complete the tour this time. ***

Q:
I’m hoping that Histor y Channel’s “Top Shot” be back again for another season. Do you know if there are any plans in the works
--Consider investing in a big box “club” membership. Be aware that the food comes in large bulk sizes and be prepared to split the costs with a friend. Divide and freeze meal-size portions. If you don’t have a freezer, barter with a friend to share the bounty in exchange for freezer space. --Study nutrition. Learn how to combine cheaper protein sources, such as beans and rice. Get creative with pasta. Go online and check out www.eatingwell.com and put “cheap” in the search box. Try www.cheapcooking.com and other similar sites. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

Have you seen the price of hamburger lately? During the past year, the price of beef has skyrocketed, with that made-at-home burger costing 10 percent more than it did a year ago. The Economic Research Service arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture keeps track of forecasts, and it’s taken a close look at 2011. We know it costs more to feed our families, but just how bad has it gotten? As a general rule, food prices go up 2.9 percent each year. In 2011 the average increase was a whopping 4.5 percent, and where it got us in the wallet was in the staples. A pork chop costs 6.9 percent more than it did a year ago. A chicken leg costs 10.5 percent more. Eggs are up 10.2 percent. Cheese up 8.4 percent. Turkey up 10.5 percent. Milk up 9.8 percent. Even potatoes soared by 12 percent. Cereals, on the other hand, went up only 6.2 percent. Is it any wonder people are feeding their kids cereal for dinner? Supply and demand is given as the reason: More of us are sticking to basics, which pushes up the demand, which pushes up the price. The things we’re not buying -- steaks, for example -- didn’t see much of a price increase because there wasn’t much of a demand. The USDA predicts that food prices for 2012 will “only” go up 3 percent to 4 percent, which still is above the long-term average. How to survive until prices come down? Here are some ideas: --Shop the ads. This is no time to be loyal. If another nearby store has a special, go there. Stock up within reason. --Use your customer store cards to take advantage any loyalty discounts they offer.

Supermarket Tricks That Makes Us Spend More Everyday CHEAPSKATE
I’ve always thought of myself as pretty sharp ® when it comes to spotting supermarket trickery. I’m not even fazed by an end-cap display announcing, by Mary “Special.” I know theirHunt ways. They hope we’ll just assume that “special” means “super cheap sale.” But we’re so much smarter than that. Which is why I was taken aback by a recent article by our friends over at TLC Discovery Channel. They revealed ways that grocery stores trick us into spending more -- ways that I’ve never considered. Some of these really made me stop and think. 1. TVs at checkout lines. I have not seen this yet, but I hear it’s coming. The trick is to distract us from the checkout scanner while exposing us to product ads for items that are coincidentally within easy reach, or that we’ll encounter on our next shopping trip. 2. Rearranging the store. There’s a reason they do this: To get you out of your routine so you’ll wander into new areas and notice (and buy) things you never saw before. While searching for what you need, you’re apt to toss a few new things into your cart that you hadn’t planned. Gotcha! 3. Strategic placement. There’s a psychology in the way stores are laid out. Milk, bread and eggs (common items) are located miles from one an-
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
other, and in the back of the store. They know you’ll have to traverse from front to back and one end to the other. That increases the likelihood you’ll buy more things than you had planned. Gotcha again! 4. Pricey things at eye level. Human nature says, apparently, that humans are more likely to pick up things at eye level than when placed higher or lower. So where do they put the most expensive options? Bingo! Did you know manufacturers actually pay a premium to have their items placed at eye level? Good reason for this. It works! 5. Unit pricing. It’s a good thing that stores now have labels showing the per-ounce or per-pint price, right? Sure, as long as all of the options are broken down in the same way. But what happens when ice cream is shown as per ounce for one brand, per gram for another, and per pint for another? Close to impossible to compare unless you carry a conversion table with you. The trick is to get us to grab the brand at eye level. Sounding familiar? 6. Diluting liquids. Items like liquid laundry detergent, cleaners and fruit juices can be difficult to price compare. While one brand may be priced cheaper than its name-brand competitor, it may be watered down considerably and therefore cheaper. Become a label reader to avoid getting tricked! 7. Grouping complementary items. You have tortilla chips on your list, but not fresh gourmet salsa, sour cream and grated premium cheese. But hey, they just happened to be arranged so beautifully right there with the chips, so why not? Or you grab the sale-priced eggs, but then see the hash browns, milk and premium brand English muffins right in the same bin. How thoughtful. The only problem: All those accessories are full-priced. Yet another tricky way the store gets you to spend more than intended.

VALENTINE BITS (from page page 3) a rose from the list of the more popular varieties. The Society of American Florists estimates the number of roses produced for Valentine’s Day at around 200 million. About 43 percent of flowers given are red roses, and 29 percent are other colors of roses. The remaining gifts are mixed flowers. • Cupid, Roman mythology’s god of love, was the son of the goddess Venus and the god Mars. He’s often depicted with wings, a bow and a quiver of arrows, and one shot is said to cause his “victims” to fall in love. Other legends represent Cupid with two sets of arrows — one gold-tipped set for love and another lead-tipped set, which brings about hatred. ■ CLIP AND SAVE

The Writing on the Wall Sometimes it’s hard to see the writing on the wall. We’re too close to a situation to prioritize, make decisions and set boundaries. The following letters are from readers who stare at the writing on their wall and see only hieroglyphics. Sammo: “My girlfriend and I recently adopted Sammo, her parents’ 9-year-old Shar-Pei. He had become too much for them to handle and her father was ready to put Sammo down after he bit his wife -- twice. We decided to adopt him since we did not see signs of aggression toward people during our time with him. “At a recent checkup, Sammo snapped at the vet. Sammo has already snapped at me twice. Last night, we were on the back porch and he was enjoying a treat. It was getting dark and my girlfriend got up to get Sammo some water. He growled and charged at her. He has not had any real training outside of housebreaking and learning how to sit. What should we do?” The writing on the wall: Sammo had bitten twice before they adopted him, July and they knew this. He’s 31-August 6, 2006 an aggressive dog that requires professional training and firm boundaries. They will have to make concessions to keep Sammo safely in their lives and in their house. Rex: FigureRex, has “Our 2-year-old AustralianGo shepherd, production answers shown signs of aggression toward strangers and my 1 45 daughter’s HRS: friendsMIN: -- never toward family members. stamp He won’t let anyone touch my daughter. We tried to socialize him, but it didn’t get any better, so we want to do something about it.” The writing on the wall: Rex is a dangerous dog, and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured. This family stands to lose a lot -- friendships, homeowners insurance, the home itself or even lives. Rex should be securely confined whenever anyone visits their home, and he must be kept away from small children. Maddy: “Some months back, my daughter rescued an abandoned dog. We have rescued animals in the past, but I was hesitant to take in a new animal because I’d just lost my job and money was -- and still is -- an issue. Nevertheless, I let “Maddy” stay. “In no time, I realized this little dog has some seCASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Geezers and Floozies Q:
I’m part of a group of old geezers who gets together ever y week at the local coffee place. Social Security is a frequent topic of conversation. At our last meeting, the subject of benefits for divorcees came up. One of our geezers was married to his first wife for 16 years and to his second wife for 30 years. His first wife remarried, but she is now divorced from that guy after 20 years of marriage. If our geezer pal dies, who will get what? He’s mostly wondering if his first wife will get Social Security from him or from her second husband.

Q:
I have in my possession the porcelain set that is seen in the enclosed photo. The set consists of a tray, a covered sugar bowl with a matching porcelain spoon and two shakers. The round tray measures approximately 7 inches in diameter. They are all decorated with hand-painted pink roses, green leaves and gold trim. The set is in pristine condition. Each piece is marked with the words “Hand Painted -- Nippon -- M.” I did some research and learned that this mark indicates that the pieces were imported by the Morimura Brothers. There is a note in the sugar bowl that says the set belonged to my grandmother in the year 1919. Any information you can give me about this set, its actual age and the value it might have will be appreciated.

Condiment set made in Japan.
A:
Nippon is the Japanese word for Japan and was used in marks on porcelain from 1891 to around 1920. The Morimura Brothers were distributors who exported porcelain from Japan to the United States. Your set is a condiment set and the bowl with spoon/ladle is for serving mustard. Toothpick holders were often included in these sets. Style, design and the manufacturer’s mark are the basis for determining age. Based on that, your condiment set was made sometime between 1891 and 1910. Similar sets are selling on the Internet at $75 to $125.

This mark is on the bottom of a pitcher that we inherited. It belonged to my husband’s aunt, who died in England 10 years ago at the age of 90. Also included in the mark is the name “Rhead.” We were told his name is Frederick Rhead and he was an English ceramic artist. The pitcher is 7 inches tall and in mint condition. It is decorated with a tan-and bittersweetcolored, stylized design. We would love to know the approximate age of the piece as well as its value.

When hitting out of a bunker, a common tendency for many amateurs is to decelerate or stop the club completely after impact. The result usually leaves the ball still in the bunker. It is important to have a complete follow-through when hitting out of the sand, but for some players it can be difficult to incorporate that feel. As a drill, hit some bunker shots with only your left hand (for left-handed players, use your right hand). This will force you to take a longer swing, as well as exaggerate your follow-through. Don’t lock your elbow or wrist after impact. Allow the elbow to remain relaxed and the wrist to hinge after impact and during the follow-through. This drill will give you the proper feel for what it is like to accelerate through the ball. As an additional result, you should find that you are now utilizing the full bounce of the club and that the club head slides through the sand much more cleanly.
