• As high school and college sports grew in popularity, schools used mascots to distinguish and set apart their team on the field. In the 1800s, mascots were actually live animals. Professional sports teams didn’t begin using mascots until the 1960s. The New York Mets were the first team to debut a mascot, Mr. Met, a man with a giant baseball for a head, who made his debut in 1962 at the Polo Grounds, the Mets’ stadium at the time. The Mets’ farm team, the Brooklyn Cyclones, have their own mascot, Sandy the Seagull. • The San Diego Chicken made his debut in 1974, but not at a Padres game. The chicken first made appearances at the San Diego Zoo, concerts, and other sporting events before first performing at the Padres stadium in 1977. A 20-year-old college Mascots: Turn to page 3

By Samantha Weaver

* It was beloved English author and humorist P.G. Wodehouse, probably best known for his tales of Wooster and Jeeves, who made the following observation: “Judges, as a class, display, in the matter of arranging [divorce settlements] that reckless generosity which is found only in men who are giving away someone else’s money.” * Brides in ancient Rome carried sheaves of wheat, not bouquets of flowers. * Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, had a pet parrot with a questionable vocabulary. In fact, Poll (the pet in question) was so foul-mouthed (-beaked?) that it disrupted Jackson’s funeral. According to Rev. William Menefee Norment, who presided at the service, “Before the sermon and while the crowd was gathering, a wicked parrot that was a household pet got excited and commenced swearing so loud and long as to disturb the people and had to be carried from the house.” * The reasons why aren’t clearly understood, but it seems that people with high blood pressure rarely get cancer. * Glass-bottom beer tankards were invented during medieval times. Evidently, some taverns were so rough that patrons felt the need to be able to see the other drinkers even when turning the mug bottoms-up. * Those who study such things say that when you’re sleeping, a quarter of all your blood is in your liver. * It’s pretty common knowledge that it’s the male seahorse, not the female, that gives birth to the young. Not many people realize, though, that a male seahorse can deliver a brood of a thousand or more babies in the morning, and then be pregnant again that night. *** Thought for the Day: “I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.” -- E.B. White

This label is often used for perishable baked goods. Beyond this date, freshness is no longer guaranteed, although the product may still be edible. “SELL BY”

This date is usually found on highly perishable foods like meat, milk and bread. This date guides the rotation of shelf stock, and is determined in order to allow time for the product to be stored and used at home. The product is still safe and wholesome past this date. For example, milk will usually be good for at least a week beyond its “Sell By” date (if properly refrigerated). Meat is still fresh by its “Sell By” date, but it should either be consumed or frozen within 48 hours. “PACK DATE”

Some products bear a pack date indicating when the product was packaged. This date is often encrypted so only manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers can read it. The pack date on some products, such as eggs, is shown by a Julian date (dates numbered 1 through 365), where Jan. 1 is number 1 and Dec. 31 is number Correct answer: "D" Okay, this is a trick 365. question. WHAT IS PRODUCT DATING?

The use of a calendar date, or “open date,” on food packaging (as opposed to a code) is a date stamped onto a package to help the store determine how long to display that item for sale. It also helps the customer know how long an item is good for purchase, and how long it will be at its best quality. An open date is not a safety date. These dates help stores move older merchandise and protect manufacturers from potential liability claims. Although most markets are vigilant about rotating stock, some are not. “BEST BEFORE,” “BETTER IF USED BEFORE,” or “BEST IF USED BY”

He’s one of those iconic comedians that you look up to and hope to meet. I had seen him at the Comedy Store, and he just brings this power when he walks in. He just has that star quality and charisma. “As an actor, he’s extremely nurturing. That is something I appreciate Eugene Kim as an artist because you want to feel safe in your environment. And somebody who is a legend like Andrew, he could have easily been a jerk, but he was a really great person to work with. Eugene’s next project is the feature film “Car Dogs, which also stars Octavia Spencer, Josh Hopkins, George Lopez and Nia Vardalos. After three years and 75,000 miles, the Alabama needed overhauling and was taken to France, where the USS Kearsarge was lying in wait. * On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in America opens at Coney Island, New York. The coaster traveled 6 mph and cost a nickel to ride. The name Coney Island is believed to have come from the Dutch Konijn Eilandt, or Rabbit Island. * On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1922, with some 600 Checker Cabs on the streets of New York City alone, owner Morris Markin went looking for a bigger factory and settled on Kalamazoo. * On June 14, 1954, more than 12 million Americans “die” in a mock nuclear attack, as the United States goes through its first nationwide civil-defense drill. The event stood as a stark reminder that the world was now living under a nuclear shadow. * On June 13, 1966, the Supreme Court hands down its decision in Miranda v. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation. Ernesto Miranda had been arrested and not told he didn’t have to say anything. * On June 17, 1972, five burglars are arrested in the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. An extensive investigation unveiled a scheme of political sabotage and espionage, which ultimately resulted in the resignation of President Richard Nixon. * On June 15, 1986, stock-car driver Richard Petty makes the 1,000th start of his NASCAR career, at Michigan International Speedway. “The King” would extend his record to 1,184 career starts before his retirement in 1992. YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Widow’s Benefits Clarified Q:

I have been married three times. All three of my husbands are dead. I divorced my first husband when I was 38. He died several years ago. I was married to my second husband for 15 years. He died when I was 62, and I am getting divorced widow’s benefits from him. I married my third husband when I was 66, and he died several months ago. I called Social Security to see if I could get benefits from my third husband. The call screener said no without any explanation. When I asked about my first husband, she said that marriage was too long ago so I don’t qualify. I am confused because I have a neighbor who told me she is getting widow’s benefits from both of her ex-husbands. So why can’t I?

married to all three women for more than 10 years. If I understand Social Security rules correctly, when Henr y dies, all three of his ex-wives could get Social Security benefits on his record, right? No wonder the system is going broke!

from your second husband’s record. So my hunch is that his Social Security account is the most generous. But I am a little puzzled by what you allege the Social Security representative told you over the phone. There is no law that says a marriage from a long time in the past disqualifies you for Social Security benefits. So if you were married to your first husband for more than 10 years, then you are potentially due divorced widow’s benefits from his Social Security account. But again, only if it would pay a higher rate than what you are currently getting from husband number two. Also, you said you were given no explanation for why you were not due benefits from husband number three. Again, if his Social Security benefit is higher than number one’s or number two’s benefit, then you should get benefits from his record. I suggest you pay a visit to your local Social Security office where you can sit down with a representative in person. He or she can look up the records of all three of your ex-husbands and show you which husband has the highest Social Security benefit rate. As I said before, my educated guess is that it is husband number two. But you deserve a better explanation than the one you got over the phone. For those readers who are wondering why this woman was getting widow’s benefits from husband number two while she was married to husband number three, please read the next question and answer.

A:

Well, that scenario -- three women collecting benefits from one man’s Social Security account -- is technically possible, but highly unlikely. In the real world, one or more of those ex-wives probably would have remarried. And assuming those remarriages took place before they were 60 years old, that means they would no longer be due any of Henry’s Social Security benefits. Also, in the real world, it is very likely that one or more of Henry’s wives would have worked and earned her own Social Security benefit. And those benefits would be paid first before they could collect anything from poor old Henry’s Social Security record. In my 40-plus years of working on Social Security cases, I only saw one record where there were three women collecting benefits off of one guy’s Social Security account. In fact, it’s really not all that common to find records with two wives or widows getting benefits from one Social Security account. I know from experience that people like to pin the blame for Social Security financial woes on suspected abuses of the system. Allegations of overly generous spousal benefits, too lenient disability rules and supposed excess payments to the minor children of retirees are frequent targets. As I’ve explained a hundred times in this column, there really is only one major cause for Social Security’s long range shortages: aging baby boomers. There are just so darn many of us. There are about 10,000 old geezers filing for Social Security retirement benefits every day, and thousand more with creaking timeworn bodies signing up for disability benefits. ***

Q:

I am 72 years old and getting widow’s benefits from my husband of 45 years, who died two years ago. I’ve met a wonderful man, and we’d like to share our remaining years together. But a friend told me that if we get married, I would lose my widow’s benefits. Is this true?

A:

It was true about 40 years ago. But not today. Original Social Security rules said that if a If you have a Social Security question, Tom woman was married to husband number two, she Margenau has the answer. I’m afraid your neighbor is either lying to you or she is confused about what she is getting from Social Security. VETERANS  POST 

I tried over-the-counter treatments, which did not help. I read on the Internet that this is a common side effect. I’m concerned and don’t know what to do to get relief. Do you have any suggestions? -- E.B. ANSWER: I also have read in online forums about diarrhea lasting for months after oral terbinafine, a powerful antifungal agent that can be used as a cream. However, the published reports state that the diarrhea, which isn’t uncommon, usually goes away by itself pretty quickly.

M.D.

Husband Fears Germs in Doctor’s Offices DEAR DR. ROACH: Our issue is with doctor’s offices and germs. My husband won’t see a doctor because he says they are some of the “germiest” places around. After his last visit to the dermatologist, he said he wouldn’t go back because the doctor didn’t wash his hands or change gloves before examining him. I asked a doctor once to wash his hands, and he got ver y defensive, to the point of being rude, and I didn’t feel comfortable seeing him again. Also, what about skin diseases, such as rosacea, lupus, etc.? Can these be transferred via stethoscopes, equipment or incidental contact? What can I do to reassure my husband that he won’t get a disease at the doctor’s office? -- R. ANSWER: It is certainly reasonable to expect that your doctor’s office be kept clean, and you have every right to ask your doctor to wash his or her hands before an exam, if you haven’t seen him or her washing hands in front of you. I don’t blame you for being uncomfortable about seeing the defensive doctor -- infection control is part of our business.

General advice for acute diarrhea (that is, lasting less than two weeks) includes drinking plenty of fluids with some salt and sugar, not eating at all for the first 24 hours and then only modest amounts of bland foods, such as rice, potatoes, bananas and crackers. The over-the-counter drug loperamide usually is safe. If you are having more than six bowel movements a day on this regimen after two days, it’s time to call your doctor again. Oral terbinafine rarely causes serious liver damage. Although it’s not life-threatening, it can cause taste disturbances, which can become permanent. I recommend thinking twice before taking oral terbinafine. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. VA Expands Telehealth Mental-Health Care Veterans living in rural areas have been able in many cases to take advantage of TeleHealth. Via phone calls, video conferencing or storage of information, more than 600,000 veterans received care last year without leaving home. Now the Department of Veterans Affairs is adding more mental-health resource centers to its lineup. What this means to veterans is rapid access to mental-health care in rural areas or areas that are underserved by mental-health providers. The facilities, gearing up this summer, will be located in Charleston, South Carolina; Salt Lake City, Utah; Pittsburgh; Boise, Idaho; Seattle; and Portland, Oregon. An additional facility is already up and running in West Haven, Connecticut, for serious and complex mental-health concerns such as bipolar disorder and chronic depression. Telemedicine might well be one of the most technologically beneficial forms of patient care that the VA provides, with 2.1 million televisits last year. Thanks to TeleHealth, many veterans can continue to live at home and have their vitals monitored without having to move to a nursing home. Clinical Video Telehealth means a veteran can have a prescription changed or consult and ask questions without having to go to a medical facility. Real-time video conferencing allows a patient to communicate directly with the healthcare provider through one of the gadgets, such as computers, telephone and monitors. Storeand-Forward collects images and signals that are transmitted to the medical staff to be reviewed and assessed later. If you live in an area where much of your care from the VA is through Telehealth, you can keep an eye on changes via its quarterly online newsletter. Go to www.telehealth.va.gov and click on Newsletters for the list of current and past issues. ***

The MIND diet, which stands for “Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay,” was developed by Martha Clare Morris, a nutritional epidemiologist at Rush University Medical Center, through a study funded by the National Institute on Aging. The study followed the diets of nearly 1,000 elderly adults, who filled out food questionnaires and underwent repeated neurological testing for an average of 4.5 years. It found participants whose diets most closely followed the MIND recommendations had brains that functioned as if they were 7.5 years younger, and it lowered their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by as much as 53 percent. And even those who didn’t stick to the diet perfectly but followed it moderately well reduced their risk of Alzheimer’s by 35 percent. The MIND Menu: The MIND diet has 15 dietary components. The emphasis is on eating from 10 brainhealthy food groups, and limiting foods from five unhealthy groups. Here’s a rundown of the healthy foods you should work into your diet: • Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): Eat at least one serving per day. Lady of the Calla Lily Is a Lovely Lamp Q:

Enclosed is a photo of a lamp made by Van Briggle Pottery. Marked on the bottom are the words “Van Briggle -- Colo. Spgs” and the double letters “A” in a square. The figure is 12-inches high and the height, including the shade, is 24 inches. The shade is made of milkweed seed and decorated with real daisies and butterflies. The base is the color “Colorado Sunset.” It is in excellent condition and all original. I understand that the lamp has become a collector’s item. Could you give me any information on my lamp?

A:

You have an example Van Briggle’s female figure reclining against a large calla lily. It is titled “Lady of the Calla Lily” and the matte glaze is “Persian Rose” rather than Colorado Sunset. The Dutch artist, Artus Van Briggle, was born in 1869. He was with Rookwood Pottery until he left in 1899. In 1901, he founded his pottery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. When he died in 1904, Van Briggle Pottery was founded his wife, in 1901 Anne, successfully took over the managing of the pottery. The double “A” mark represents the initials of both his first name and that of his wife Anne. The lady figurine was created in the 1920s and was available in Persian Rose, white, blue and green matte
