• The word “pollen” comes from the Latin word meaning a fine dust or flour. Like it or not, it's floating in the air all around us and we can't avoid breathing at least some of it in. Here are some staggering numbers: • A pine tree releases about two million grains of pollen from a single pine cone, and some 14 million will be released from a single corn plant. Ragweed releases a billion pollen grains per plant. A million tons of ragweed pollen are released across the U.S. each year. • It's generally thought than most pollen travels 50 miles or less from the point of origin, and because it’s so heavy, it takes a strong wind to carry it farther than that. However, when researchers studied cores taken from peat bogs on the remote island of Tristan in the South Atlantic, they found pollen from trees whose nearest habitat was a distant 2,500 miles away. • Because pollen grains are so unique to their species and so indestructible, studying pollen found in sediments and sedimentary rocks helps researchers track vegetation through historical millenia. For example, by examining pollens and spores found in peat bog cores around the world, researchers can tell when ice ages retreated; when the grasses arrived; when trees showed up; and when agriculture began.

• One research station on the edge of Paris in 1879 measured the spore, pollen, and bacteria content of the atmosphere at different times and conditions using sticky slides exposed to air currents. It was found that the airborne load of fungus spores decreased greatly during heavy rain but rebounded up to tenfold after the rain. The bacteria count, meanwhile, barely budged during rain. • The biggest catch of bacteria occurred when it was somewhat dry outside. If the wind blew over the city of Paris before hitting the research station, the bacterial load was ten times higher than if it was coming from the countryside. The biggest load of fungal spores came when the wind was blowing from the country. • The researcher correctly concluded that human disease was likely caused by the bacteria while plant diseases were caused by fungus. • Bats pollinate more than 300 species of fruit, including mangoes, bananas, and guavas. Some bats have very long tongues, similar to the moth’s proboscis, and can also hover over the fruit, much like hummingbirds. • The anther of the tomato flower will only release its pollen if it is rapidly vibrated. This is called “buzz pollination” and requires bumblebees to shake it in a certain way. • Because corn flowers produce such long styles (also known as corn silk or tassel), corn pollen grains hold the record for longest pollen tube, which can measure 12 inches or more.

Adaptable Plants (from page one) a digestive fluid that slowly dissolves the prey, allowing the plant to extract the essential nutrients it needs DEXTROUS DISBURSEMENT

• Some plants capture insects not to eat them but to cover them with pollen. The birthwort plant is commonly known as Dutchman’s pipes, due to the shape of its flowers resembling a stubby tobacco pipe. The flower gives off the scent of rotting meat, attracting flies. When the flies land on the flower, the flower snaps shut, trapping the bug just long enough to cover it with a sticky pollen before releasing it. The fly then carries the pollen on to other flowers in the vicinity. • The flower of the flying duck orchid looks and smells exactly like a female sawfly. Male sawflies land on the flower, triggering the flower to snap shut, trapping the fly inside where it becomes covered with pollen before it breaks free and goes on its way, hopefully to find another mate-scented orchid. • Similarly, the laughing bumblebee orchid has a flower that both looks and smells like a female bee, attracting the amorous attentions of male bees who attempt to mate with the flower and fly off bearing a load of pollen.

• The resurrection fern shrivels up when rainfall ceases. In this dormant state, it can survive on just three percent of what should be the normal amount of precipitation. In this stage only a small portion of the leaf surface is exposed to sunlight. Since it appears to be dead and

Rolfing® is a system of deep connective tissue manipulation and education in new movement patterns that guides the body toward anatomical order of increased balance and length, centering it around its vertical axis. Rolfed persons generally experience a marked increase in Flexibility by: A: The physical manipulation of fascia, freeing layers of muscles that have become stuck to one another, and lengthening the myelin sheathing-enclosed muscle, which often become shortened with misuse and trauma. B: By aligning the body in its most structurally sound arrangement, Rolfing® allows each muscle to do its designated job and not be forced to overwork to compensate for a body dragged down by gravity. How to Unclog a Toilet -Quick and Easy! No one likes to talk about it, but truth be Everyday told, it happens. Toilets malfunction. They get clogged.CHEAPSKATE Sure, it’s inconvenient, but more than that, downright embarrassing if you’re someby Mary Hunt where other than the privacy of your own home. Here’s a cheat sheet so you’ll know ahead of time how to unclog that toilet! ®

1. STOP IT FROM OVERFLOWING The moment you realize something’s wrong, and the water level is rising, you need to act fast to turn it off. --Remove the lid on the back of the toilet and set it on the floor. --Reach into the tank (that water is clean) and close the open flapper. --Bend down and reach behind the toilet near the floor and turn off the water supply by turning the handle clockwise. Now you can stop worrying about flooding the place and move on to freeing the clog using one of the following methods.

Vol. XVIII Issue No. 8

DISH SOAP AND HOT WATER If you don’t have a plunger, or using it didn’t clear the problem, move on to this option: --Pour about half a cup of liquid dish soap such as Blue Dawn into the toilet to help lubricate the clog and get it moving. --While that sits and works to soften the clog (give it a few minutes), heat up a big pan of water on the stove. You want it hot but not boiling. --Carefully pour the hot water into the toilet to chase the dish soap. Wait a couple of minutes longer, then flush. If you want to perform this trick without leaving the bathroom, give shampoo or hand soap a try, followed by hot tap water. It can’t hurt, but chances are good that it will work, and no one will be the wiser. BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR If you don’t have a plunger handy, this option is likely to do the trick, provided the water level in the bowl has mostly subsided, and the water supply shut-off valve is still turned off. Head to the pantry and grab baking soda and vinegar. This can be tricky because baking soda and vinegar when combined create a powerful fizzing action that can do more than just produce an impressive amount of bubbles; it can also release even the most stubborn of drain clogs. You don’t want to go overboard, but you want to clear this clog, so follow these instructions exactly. --Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the toilet. Wait a couple of minutes. --Follow with 2 cups of white vinegar, pouring it in slowly. Allow the vinegar and baking soda to work for several minutes. --Turn the water supply on, allow the tank to fill, then flush the toilet to see if the clog has cleared. If needed, you can safely repeat this process once more, but wait for a little while. Safety Warning: Do not pour vinegar or baking soda into your drain either before or after using drain-cleaning chemicals such as Drano. There you go -- how to deal with a clogged toilet like a pro! *MON., * * DEC. 6

PLUNGER Sounds pretty basic, but a plunger really is the best option for how to unclog a toilet. Of course, this assumes you have the right kind of plunger, specifically made for this job. Every household needs this basic, inexpensive tool. You want a plunger like the NEIKO toilet plunger with a flange on the bottom that is designed to fit snugly into the drain hole at the bottom of the bowl -- not a flat bottom plunger, which is better for floor drains and showers. --Put on rubber gloves, if you have them. --Place the plunger into the toilet bowl and push down gently, just to remove the air in Mary invites you to visit her at Everydaythe flange without splashing yourself dirtycarefully. When the “Wizards of Waverly Place” ended on the Disney Channel in 2012, Selena Gomez quickly branched out into more adult roles in films like “Spring Breakers.” She also r ecor ded several hit songs and did voice work in “Hotel Transylv a n i a ” Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short and its sein “Only Murders in the Building” quels. She’s also made her mark behind the scenes as an executive producer for several of her projects. Starring opposite comedy legends Martin Short and Steve Martin in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is her smartest move yet. *** Q: What happened to the new show “Monarch” starring Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins? It was supposed to premiere on Jan. 30. -- L.D.

first season. Another factor in its delay could be the fact that there was a creative change behind the scenes in November. The original showrunner, Michael Rauch, was replaced by Jon Feldman, which resulted in reshoots of several scenes. Having a few more months of creative planning will only benefit the show in the long run, which is about a country music dynasty starring Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”). It has the makings of a hit, so it should be worth the wait. *** Q: Was there ever a TV show about a family that had a winer y before the new one called “Promised Land?” If so, what year was it on? -- L.K.

Potted Shrimp

Classic Onion Dip

Lacking refrigeration, the early settlers preserved seafood and meats by “potting” them. They first cooked the food, then potted and sealed it with plenty of fat, often butter. Potting food is still quite popular throughout the Deep South, especially in the Carolinas.

At 1950s dinner parties, cream cheesebased onion and clam dips were two of the most popular offerings. In 1952, the Lipton Soup Company made preparing onion dip even easier by developing a dehydrated onion-soup mix. A consumer, however, is credited with creating the first dip using the soup mix, which Lipton has featured ever since. “Just open a couple of packages and fold into a cup of sour cream.” Instantly, this never-fail onion party dip was ready for guests. Soon it became known as California Dip. Our onion dip is even better, for it’s made the old-fashioned way: from slow-simmered onions folded into -- of course -- sour cream.

H.L. Mencken said, “The most costly of all follies is to believe passionately in the palpably not true. It is the chief occupation of mankind.” The following letter from a reader demonstrates that it is certainly the chief occupation of those who champion the companionship of a particular canine at any cost. “We recently got an eight-month-old yellow lab from a family with three small children. The lady said the dog could be aggressive and had nipped at her two-year-old. “She is a very nervous puppy -- jumps at the slightest movement or noise. She also jumps and twitches when she sleeps. We have experienced her aggression now, and it is quite scary. The second morning we had her, something spooked her and she would not let us near our truck. The doors were all open, and she sat in the driver’s seat growling and showing her teeth. I got a treat and put it on the ground near us. When I said “release,” she got out, snatched the treat and jumped right back in. She calmed down, but was nervous all day after that. “She has showed her teeth a few times, and we’re not sure how to handle it. I read that it isn’t always good to approach or discipline her when she is showing her teeth and growling because it could initiate an attack. I know that she is scared and confused. Within one week she stayed in four different houses, with all new people. We’ve had her for a week, and we’d love to keep her. We have no children, but we have nieces and nephews around often. We need to break her of these aggressive behaviors or we will not be able to run the risk of her hurting a child. “She is a good dog -- excellent when playing fetch, gives up the ball or toy every time. However, she gets aggressive with some of her toys when indoors. We gave her a pig’s ear last night and she got extremely aggressive. Every time we moved, she growled and showed her teeth -- even when we were nowhere near her. She came out of it, but again she was nervous for the rest of the night.”

Dealing With Empty Store Shelves

Will Do 4 U

There’s been a shift in food availability across the country. If your area is just now getting hit with empty store shelves, this concept is probably shocking and a bit alarming to you. For those of us who have lived with this for a long time (for over a year in my area), it’s more of the same, but the difference is that it's worse now. Here are a few thoughts to help you adapt and hopefully get through this.

Ask your store manager about any item that you normally always find that is now missing. If he says that he’s no longer able to order it, that likely means the item is no longer on the store’s buying list. In that case, call the manufacturer (they always have their 800 number printed on the packaging). If possible, have the item handy when you call in case they ask for other information about it. You might well discover that they’re no longer making that particular item. If, however, the reply is that they don't know when certain stock will be arriving on a truck, at least there’s hope it will reappear. This is when you need to be proactive.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Happy Valentine’s Day, Honey -- Do You Want Flowers or Social Security Benefits? I suppose it’s normal for husbands to give some extra thought to getting something for their wives around Valentine’s Day. And if my emails are any indication, these guys aren’t just thinking of getting them some flowers or candy. They are thinking about giving them spousal benefits from Social Security. (And before I go on, let me be politically correct. I was just trying to be cute with those opening lines. I totally understand that a husband doesn’t “give” spousal benefits to his wife. The law says she is due those benefits, and the guy really has no say-so in the matter. Still, all the questions in today’s column come from husbands who are asking questions about benefits for their wives).

Q: I am 65 and retired and I’m thinking about taking my Social Security now. My wife is 67 and she gets her own Social Security benefit, but it’s much smaller than mine. If I take reduced benefits now, will that reduce what my wife is due in spousal benefits? A: It won’t reduce what she is due in benefits while you’re alive. But that reduction you take for early retirement will carry over to any widow’s benefits she would be due if you die first. Or to put that another way, your wife’s spousal rate is based on your full retirement age benefit. But her widow’s rate is based on your reduced retirement benefit. You didn’t give me any benefit amounts, so I will make up some numbers to give you an example of what I mean. Let’s say your full retirement age benefit is $3,000 per month and your age 65 benefit is $2,700. And we’ll say that your wife is currently getting $1,000 in her own retirement benefit. So, if you take benefits now, you’ll start getting $2,700 per month. And as I said, your wife’s spousal rate is based on your FRA benefit. So, she is due 50% of $3,000, or $1,500. So, she will keep getting her $1,000 retirement benefit and she will get an extra $500 off of your record to take her total benefits up to that $1,500 level. But if you die before she does, her widow’s rate will be based on your reduced benefit amount. For example, if you died next year, her widow’s benefit would be $2,700 per month. So, she’d keep getting her $1,000 retirement benefit, her $500 spousal benefit would stop, but she’d start getting $1,700 in widow’s benefits to take her up to that $2,700 rate. Q: My wife and I are both 62. I am still working. My wife isn’t. I plan to wait until my full retirement age (66 and 10 months) to start my Social Security when I will be due $3,400 per month. My wife’s FRA benefit would be $1,500 and she is due $1,100 if she takes her benefits at 62. That’s what she wants to do. But I am telling her to wait until her full retirement age when she can get half

max into Social Security all my life. My wife has worked outside the home for only a short time and isn’t due anything on her own Social Security record. I’m not in the best of health. I’m tr ying to figure out what to do about Social Security. My goal is to make sure my wife gets the highest widow’s benefit possible. So, what should I do?

A: As I always tell people, I’m not a financial planner. So, I can’t tell you what to do. But I can give you the Social Security numbers and let you guys decide. Let’s go over both options I’ll call “husband’s plan” and “wife’s plan.” Husband’s Plan: Neither of you would get any Social Security benefits for about the next 5 A: Well, if your goal is just to make sure years. And then at age 66 and 10 months, you’d your wife gets the highest widow’s benefits, then start getting $3,400 per month and she’d start getting $1,500 per month of her own benefits and an you’d want to wait until 70 to file because you will extra $200 in spousal benefits to take her up to the get about 130% of your full retirement rate. And $1,700 level spousal rate she is due (half of your your wife would get the same when you die. And just so you know, if you should die $3,400 benefit). Wife’s Plan: your wife would start getting before reaching age 70, your wife’s widow’s rate $1,100 per month now. She’d get that for the next would be based on what you would have been due 4 years and 10 months. That’s 58 months at $1,100 at the time of death. For example, if you die at age per month or $63,800. Then when you both reach 69, your wife would get about 120% of your full rate. But here is something you might want to full retirement age and you file for your Social Security, here is how they will figure what she will be think about. If you filed for benefits now, you’d due in spousal benefits on your record. They will probably get about $3,345. (You said you’ve paid take her full retirement rate, or $1,500 and subtract the maximum amount into Social Security all your that from one half of your full retirement rate, or life and that is the current maximum full retirement $1,700 ($3,400 divided by 2 equals $1,700). The dif- age benefit.) And at age 62, your wife would be ference, or $200, will be added to her reduced re- due about 30% of that, or about $1,000 per month. tirement benefit. So, your wife would start getting So combined, you’d be due $4,345. Between now $1,300 per month when you reach full retirement and age 70, you would get about 42 Social Security checks. That’s a total of $182,490 you’d be throwing age. So, under your wife’s plan, she’d get $200 away by waiting until 70 to file. So, do you think you and your wife would per month less beginning at her full retirement age ADVERT ISING PROOF $182,490 the next three and half compared to your plan. Do I Have to File Income Tax Returns This Year?

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What is the IRS standard tax deduction for 2021? I didn’t file a tax return last tax year (2020) because I lost my job and my income in March due to Covid. But I got a part-time job in 2021 and am wondering if I made enough money which requires me to file this year. -- Part-Time Retiree Dear Retiree: Whether or not you are required to file a federal income tax return this year depends not only on how much you earned last year (in 2021), but also the source of that income, as well as your age and your filing status. Here’s a rundown of this tax season’s IRS tax filing requirement thresholds: For most people, this is pretty straightforward. If your 2021 gross income – which includes all taxable income, not counting your Social Security benefits, unless you are married and filing separately – was below the threshold for your filing status and age, you may not have to file. But if it’s over, you will.

You’ll also need to file if you’re receiving You can also get tax preparation assisOffice: 760-320-0997 email: valleybits@msn.com Fax: 760-320Social Security benefits, and one-half of your tance through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide benefits plus your other gross income and any service. Federal Glass Co. was located in Columbus, Ohio. by Anne McCollam

Victorian Ladies Feathered Their Nests Q:

I am sending you a photo of an antique feather wreath that was a gift to me from my aunt in 1947. It is in the original mahogany wood, shadow box and the overall measurements are approximately 28 inches by 26 inches. Each feather was hand cut and varies in color from beige to white. Silk ribbon, rather than the floral tape that is used today, was used to bind the feather grouping. The olive green velvet background is not the original. It was replaced in 1954 due to extensive damage to the original. I would like to sell my wreath, since my children do not want it. Any suggestions that you have will be appreciated.

A: Federal Glass Co. made your red glassware. They were located in Columbus, Ohio, from 1900 to 1980. During the Great Depression, glassware and dinnerware were given away by theatres and merchants as premiums. They were incentives to draw people back to theatres and stores. Red Depression glassware usually sells for $15 to $30 for each piece. *** Q: I own a 1938 cobalt blue glass pitcher that stands over 4 inches tall. On the side of the pitcher is a picture of Shirley Temple. She is wearing a striped blouse under a jacket. Her name is written across her blouse. It is in mint condition. Can you tell me about my pitcher and what it might be worth?

A: Your milk pitcher was part of a threepiece breakfast set that included a bowl and a mug. They, too, were premiums and were given away with cereal. Hazel Atlas Glass Co. made your set from 1934 to 1942. Your pitcher would probably be worth $140 to $170. * * * Antiques expert and columnist Anne McCollam has recently retired and no longer receives inquiries nor answers reader letters. Feather wreaths were created by Victorian ladies to decorate their homes.

A: Creating feather wreaths, as well as hair wreaths, was a popular craft in the Victorian era, from around 1860 to the 1880s. Ladies would gather feathers and arrange them in round or oval wreaths and showcase them in elegant shadowboxes. Although some were decorative, some were mourning wreaths made to commemorate the death of a family member. Similar wreaths have been seen selling on eBay in the range of $500 to $700. *** Q: This mark is on a set of red glassware that belonged to my mother. There are 6 tumblers and 6 dessert plates. They are decorated with etched flowers and leaves. My mother told me she collected the set in the 1940s. She said movie theatres gave a piece

* On Feb. 27, 1860, President Abraham Lincoln poses for the first of several portraits by noted Civil War-era photographer Mathew Brady. A relatively new art form, the photograph (or daguerreotype) showed a beardless Lincoln just moments before he delivered an address at Cooper Union. * On Feb. 23, 1885, a 19-year-old man named John Lee is sent to the gallows in Exeter, England, for the murder of a rich, elderly woman. However, the gallows equipment malfunctioned three times and Lee was not dropped. He was then sent back to prison. * On Feb. 25, 1890, Vlacheslav Skryabin, foreign minister for the Soviet Union who took the revolutionary name Molotov, is born in Russia. Molotov advocated the use of throwing bottles filled with flammable liquid and stuffed with a lit rag, and the famous “Molotov cocktail” was born. * On Feb. 26, 1903, Alexander Winton, driving his Winton Bullet, sets the first speed record ever achieved at Daytona Beach, Florida. Built in 1902 the “Bullet Number 1” drove a measured mile at over 65 mph. * On Feb. 22, 1946, George Kennan, the temporary American ambassador in Moscow, sends an 8,000-word telegram to the Department of State detailing his views on the Soviet Union, and U.S. policy toward the communist state. Kennan’s analysis provided one of the most influential underpinnings for America’s Cold War policy of containment. * On Feb. 21, 1952, men’s figure skater Dick Button wins his second Olympic gold medal. Button captured his first gold prize at the 1948 Olympics, becoming the first American to ever take home the men’s title. Button retired from amateur skating in 1952 and went on to perform with the Ice Capades as well as graduate from Harvard Law School. * On Feb. 24, 1969, after a North Vietnamese mortar shell rocks their Douglas AC-47 gunship, Airman First Class John L. Levitow throws himself on an activated flare and tosses it out of the aircraft just before it ignites. For saving his fellow crewmembers and the gunship, Airman Levitow was later awarded the Medal of Honor. (c) 2022 Hearst Communications, Inc. All Rights Reserved

• When an animal starts eating the leaves of the acacia tree the plant emits toxic chemicals called tannins, which cause its leaves to droop and look unappetizing while also making them taste bitter. At the same time, the tree emits an ethylene gas which alerts other acacia trees in the area. Those trees then immediately start producing the tannins and giving off ethylene gas of their own, spreading the message and thus protecting each other.

Throw It Away

The golf swing can become bogged down into angles, forces, planes, degrees, and a myriad of other technical elements. Unfortunately, most golfers can’t relate to the engineering language of golf instruction that is becoming popular of late. Junior golfers and golf “athletes” work better off of images that they have used in the past, or can easily imitate. The right arm in the golf swing most simulates the throwing action seen in many sports. The arm floats away from the body into a folded position at the top of the windup, with the wrist flexed in preparation to throw. No athlete has the arm glued to the body, nor the wrist curled (like making a muscle).

By practicing the common throwing position with a ball or golf club (one handed), you’ll soon achieve the natural, powerful position that many top golfers achieve. Jack Nicklaus was criticized in his prime of having a “flying elbow” yet he just didn’t try to glue his elbow to his body. Rather than thinking about angles or degrees, simply float your right arm into its best throwing position at the top JasonJenkins Jenkinswas wasaa16-year 16-yearmember memberof of the the Jim Jim McLean Jason McLean Golf Golf School was one School teaching teaching staff staff. and He was one of of GOLF GOLF Magazine’s Magazine’s Top Top 100 100 Teacher Nominees 1999-2010 1999-2010.and He has was been named one of theofGolf Teacher Nominees named one the Digest Top Teachers in California in 2011.
