Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt

By Lucie Winborne

* If all the stars in the Milky Way were grains of salt, they’d fill an Olympic-size swimming pool. * In 1887, a group of men added Susanna Madora Salter of Argonia, Kansas, to a mayoral ballot as a prank intended to embarrass and curtail the influence of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, of which she was an officer. Instead, she won over 60% of the vote and became America’s first female mayor. * Olympic medalist Mark Spitz was famed for his large mustache in an era when swimmers shaved their bodies to become more hydrodynamic. He once joked to the Russian team’s coach that his mustache helped him swim faster by deflecting water from his mouth and making him more bullet-shaped. The following year, a mustache was sported by every member of the male Russian team. * Despite their humps, camels have straight spines. * In 2008, Chile minted 1.5 million 50peso coins with a spelling error, only noticing a year later they’d spelled “CHIIE” instead of “CHILE.” * Honeybee venom has been found to destroy some types of cancer cells. * There’s a Google map for Mercury, Venus, Earth’s moon, Mars, Pluto, three out of four of Jupiter’s moons, and all but one of the round Saturnian moons. * Juan Ponce de Leon brought cattle when he landed at Charlotte Harbor in 1521, his second trip to La Florida. When he came under attack, four of his heifers and a bull fled into the scrub, thus introducing cows to America. *** Thought for the Day: “What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.” -- Charles Bukowski (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to Remove Rust Stains from Just About Anything If there’s one subject that shows up in my inbox more oftenEveryday than any other, it has to be rust. Ugly, orange-ish stains on tubs, showers, toilets, washing machines, sinks CHEAPSKATE and even stainless steel. by Mary Hunt One reader (who shall remain nameless, as I have hopelessly misplaced your message) wrote that tiny rust marks have appeared on his new stainless steel refrigerator. Sadly, the manufacturer considers this a cosmetic issue, so the warranty does not apply. So today, for my nameless friend, plus all others who’ve written about annoying rust problems in the kitchen and bathroom, I have a story followed by a very effective, if not exciting, solution. The year was 1882. The setting: Indianapolis. A chemist took a break from his scholarly endeavors to cook up a pan of rhubarb, that sour but hardy vegetable, common in the gardens of yore. After plating his recipe, the man found that his formerly tarnished pot fairly sparkled. Being a chemist, he quickly ruled out magic and set out to discover what it was that made rhubarb such a superior cleaning agent. The secret is oxalic acid. Found naturally in rhubarb and other vegetables such as spinach, oxalic acid attacks stubborn rust, tarnish and lime stains at the molecular level, breaking the bonds that hold them together. Using that active ingredient, the chemist formulated an oxalic acid-based cleaning powder that he sold to taverns for use as a brass rail polish. Thrilled at the results, tavern owners dubbed the product -- get ready -- Bar Keepers Friend. Over the years, more and more people got in on the secret of Bar Keepers Friend, discovering more varied and unique uses for this cleaning powder still available in the cleaning aisle of just about every supermarket. Still a family-owned company manufacturing in Indianapolis and still motivated by solving problems for their customers, Bar Keepers Friend has grown and expanded its line of products with variations in ingredients and packaging, but the products remain essentially the same as the ones that polished bar rails over a century ago. Back to our collective problem with rust spots and stains on stainless steel. I’ve been using Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser for years, assuming it to be a liquid version of the powdered cleanser in the old, familiar can. I keep it handy in my laundry room to remove rust stains from the inside of my clothes washer. No big deal. I see a spot, I hit it with BKF Soft Cleanser and a soft cloth and it disappears. But I was wrong about the BKF Soft Cleanser ®

Vol. XVIII Issue No. 1

being just a liquid version of the powdered cleanser. It has something more I’m convinced makes it uniquely effective against household rust. The active ingredients in the soft cleanser are oxalic acid and citric acid. Great news: This soft cleanser now comes as a spray foam: Bar Keepers Friend MORE Spray + Foam. This is fabulous because the foam sticks to vertical surfaces! And yes, I am now thinking of that new stainless steel refrigerator that has developed tiny rust marks. The foam will stick to those spots long enough to do its work before being wiped away with a soft cloth. Bar Keepers Friend MORE Spray Foam is safe to be used on stainless steel, tile, porcelain, ceramic, fiberglass, aluminum, copper, brass, chrome and glass. As for the “MORE” in its name, it is an acronym for “mineral deposits, oily residues, rust stains and everyday grime.” Get it? I’m no chemist but I can read lists of ingredients. As far as I have discovered, BKF Soft Cleanser and the new BKF MORE Spray + Foam are the only BKF products that contain both oxalic acid and citric acid. That makes for one powerful combination because I find myself reaching for this fabulous foam cleaner all the time. It’s convenient and so easy to use. Bar Keepers Friend MORE Spray + Foam is available online and in the cleaning products aisle of home improvement stores such as Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware. And now for the important fine print: CAUTION: Always test any product in an inconspicuous place first. Always. DO NOT USE on wood, fabric, leather, mirrors, painted surfaces, gold, silver (sterling silver is OK) or natural stone surfaces such as granite and marble. * * * Mary invites you to visit her at EverydayCheapskate. com, where this column is archived complete with links and resources for all recommended products and services. A: The main cast of “Lost” became household names shortly after it premiered in 2004, including Naveen Andrews, who played one of the heroic survivors of the fictional Oceanic Flight 815. He’s worked steadily ever since in short-lived series like “Sense8” and “Instinct.” Next up, he’ll co-star alongside Amanda Seyfried in “The Dropout” on Naveen Andrews Hulu, which is based on Elizabeth Holmes, the young biotech company owner who was on trial for fraud. Andrews will play Holmes’ older Svengali-esque boyfriend and business partner, Sunny Balwani. Look for the eightepisode limited series to debut on Hulu beginning March 3. *** Q: Is “Mr. Mayor” coming back for a second season? I thought it was pretty good, but mainly because I’ve always loved Ted Danson. I hope the network gives it another chance. -- S.P.

The word “acceptance” gets a bad rap. Acceptance is not resignation. It’s not defeatist or complacent. Acceptance is powerful and progressive -- a symbol that marks that point in time when a person seizes control of their life. Acceptance is the antidote to denial. Denial fuels paralysis. It destroys relationships, drains bank accounts, limits potential, inhibits progress, wreaks havoc on our health and leaves questionable politicians in power for far too long. And it’s certainly no way to deal with a dog. An acquaintance of mine is having trouble with his neighbors -- if you ask him. If you ask them, they’re having trouble with his dogs. I asked him what the problem was, and he said, “My neighbors say my dogs bark when I’m not home, but I don’t think they do.” Not “but I know they don’t because I recorded them while I was out.” Not “but I know they don’t because I pretended to leave and then caught the neighbor redhanded provoking my dogs.” Nope. For him it was enough to simply deny the possibility outright and assume his neighbors are exaggerating or lying. The irony is that he is an elementary-school teacher. No one is more familiar with the frustrations of denial than a teacher of young children. “Thank you for coming in, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Your son hid a dead squirrel in my desk drawer today.” “Oh, but our Bobby would never do that. He's a kind boy and loves all God’s creatures.” Barking is a behavioral problem that frequently gets blown all out of proportion because of denial. Yes, barking is communication, it’s natural, it’s protection. But it’s also annoying and disruptive when excessive. Barking isn’t the problem. Excessive barking is the problem. And if your dog is accused, the first step should be determining whether he is an

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

A Big, Dumb Jerk Takes a Tumble! I recently shared a humorous story about a trip I took to Poland in the 1990s to train some of their Social Security officials on how we handled information outreach to American citizens about our Social Security programs. I received so much positive feedback on that column. Here is a typical example: “I have been a faithful reader of your column for many years. I have learned so much about Social Security. But it’s nice to get a break once in a while from all the details about that complicated program and read some of your human-interest stories. Keep them coming!” Well, it’s the holiday season and maybe we can take another little break from all the nitty-gritty details of Social Security, and I can share another funny story with you. This story takes place around Christmastime in 1997. My family and I had just moved to San Diego, California -- where I was in charge of publicaffairs activities for the Social Security Administration in that part of the country. In addition to being the frontman for the SSA with local media outlets, that also meant I’d be running around town giving speeches to various community groups about Social Security and conducting retirement seminars with local employers. To set the scene for this story, I must tell you two things. First: We had moved to San Diego from gritty old Baltimore. And prior to that, we had lived and worked in many cold and wintry northern cities. So, moving to Southern California, where every day would be sunny and 72 degrees, was like a dream come true. And second, at the time, my mother was in failing health and I was planning a holiday season trip back to her home in Wisconsin. Before I took the trip, I thought it would be a good idea to make a little video for my mom to give her a taste of life in San Diego. I knew she would never be physically able to come visit. So, I rented a video camera. It was a big, bulky piece of equipment. (This was before cellphones became cameras and video recorders.) I took some shots of our family and home life. But I also went all around San Diego making little video clips. One morning, I had gone to the Social Security office in Pacific Beach, a coastal San Diego neighborhood, to give a training class to the office employees. After that, I had a lunchtime speech scheduled at a Rotary Club in downtown San Diego. After I finished the training class, I had some time to kill before I had to leave for the speech. Knowing I’d have this extra time, I had brought along the camera. So, off I went to the Pacific Beach boardwalk, which was just a couple blocks from the Social Security office. And there I stood on a bluff overlooking the ocean, taking panoramic shots of everything there was to see. I knew my mom would be impressed. I was slowly walking backward, and I was panning from one side of the coast to the other. And I was doing a running commentary on all the sights we were looking at. Then I panned along the boardwalk to show all the people who were out on such a pretty day. (I still wasn’t used to the fact that hundreds of

bikini. I’m sure she had a good chuckle, and maybe a “That serves you right, you big, dumb jerk” grin on her face as she passed by my mangled body. Instead, my savior was a nice 70-ish-year-old woman who helped me to the bench I had just fallen over. She had some water and used a hankie from her purse to help clean me up. As I slowly regained my senses, I realized there were a lot of contusions and abrasions, but no bones were broken and there really was no pain. But I was a bloody mess. My head wound was not deep, and the bleeding stopped quickly. But I had several bad scrapes on my knees and elbows. My khaki dress slacks and blue shirt were torn and bloodstained! After maybe 10 minutes of intensive beachside care, I thanked the nice old lady. I just barely had time to get to a nearby drugstore where I bought antiseptic ointment and some bandages. I sat in my car and did an amateurish first aid job on my many cuts and bruises. I knew I didn’t have time to get home and change before my speech. I made it downtown just in time. So, picture a room full of some of San Diego’s top business leaders. And at the podium, there was a guy who looked like he just survived a bomb blast! Fortunately, I was able to wow them with my Social Security presentation, so they were mostly able to ignore my pitiful appearance! Oh, by the way: The camera survived the crash, and so did the film it contained. That evening, I gave my wife a preview of my nice travelogue of San Diego scenes that ended with a picturesque overview of the Pacific Ocean and people walking and jogging along a boardwalk. And just as a gorgeous bikini-clad blonde comes into sharp focus, the camera suddenly lurches upward and sideways and then down -- and then the film goes blank! And my wife, looking at my battle scars, echoed the sentiments of the boardwalk beauty when she said, “That serves you right, you big, dumb jerk!” I hope you got a little chuckle out of that Fri., 12/3/21 story. And next week, I promise we’ll get back to Please review carefully. Double check:  Phone Number(s)  Spelling  some serious Social Security issues! * * *

people were at the beach in the middle of December!) As I panned the boardwalk, in my lens viewer I suddenly spotted the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She was young. She was blonde. She was perfectly tanned. And she was wearing a rather skimpy bikini. She looked like one of those models from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. And she was running along the boardwalk toward me. I was transfixed. Even though this was supposed to be a travelogue for my 85-year-old mother, I couldn’t keep my camera off the gorgeous goddess! I followed her as she slowly ran toward me, keeping her in perfect focus as she approached. And again, all the while, I am slowly backing up. And just as she approached me, I tripped. I thought I was on a path with no obstacles, but I had backed right into a small cement bench along the ocean bluff. But to say I “tripped” is to put it very mildly. Actually, I was falling backward, uncontrollably, just as she ran by. As I was falling, I pivoted my body so that I wouldn’t land on my back; I also was trying to protect the expensive camera I had rented. I started to put out my hands to break my fall. But that never happened. What broke my fall was my head! It slammed with a BANG right onto the concrete boardwalk! For a short while, things were just a blur. I must have blacked out. But I did so for only a few seconds. I remember lifting my head off the concrete and slowly focusing on an odd shape that was blowing gently by me along the boardwalk. It was a bloody red blob of skin, about the size of a quarter, with some hairs sticking out of it. What could that be? I felt the top of my forehead and my hand came back a bloody mess. What was blowing in the breeze beside me was a piece of my scalp! Fortunately, a Florence Nightingale came to my aid. And it wasn’t the gorgeous blonde in the

Deciphering Senior Housing Options DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you decipher the different types of housing options available to seniors, and recommend some good resources for finding them? I need to find a place for my elderly mother and could use some help. --Overwhelmed Daughter Dear Overwhelmed: There’s a wide array of housing options available to seniors, but what’s appropriate for your mom will depend on her needs and financial situation. Here’s a rundown of the different levels of senior housing and some resources to help you choose one.

Page 13

housekeeping, transportation, social activities and medication management. Many facilities also offer special “memory care units” for residents with dementia. Costs for assisted living usually run between $3,000 and $6,000 per month depending on location and services needed. Most residents pay for assisted living from personal funds, while some have long-term care insurance policies. And many state Medicaid programs today also cover some assisted living costs for financially eligible residents. Board and care homes: These are a similar, but less expensive option to look into which offers many of the same services as assisted living facilities, but in a much smaller home setting. Your Area Aging Agency is again a good resource for finding assisted living facilities and board care homes, as is Caring.com. Nursing homes: If your mom needs ongoing medical and personal care or has very limited mobility, a nursing home, which provides 24-hour skilled nursing care is the next option. To find a good one, use Medicare’s nursing home compare tool at Medicare.gov/carecompare. This tool will not only help you locate nursing homes in your area, it also provides a 5-star rating system on recent health inspections, staffing, quality of care, and overall rating.

Independent living: If your mom is in relatively good health and self-sufficient, “independent living communities” are a top option that can offer a sense of community. Typically available to people over age 55, this type of senior housing is usually apartments or town homes that are fully functional. In addition, many communities also offer amenities such as meals served in a common dining area, housekeeping, transportation and a variety of social activities. To locate this type of housing, contact your Area Agency on Aging (call 800-6771116 to get your local number), or use an ADVERTISING PROOF online search tool like Caring.com. Most of TUES., DEC. But be aware that nursing home care is very expensive, costing anywhere between $4,500 and $13,000 per month for a semi-private room depending on where you live. Most residents pay from either personal funds, a long-term care insurance policy or through Medicaid after their savings are depleted. Continuing-care retirement communities: If your mom has the financial resources, a “CCRC” is another option that provides all levels of housing (independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing home care) in one convenient location. But these communities typically require a hefty entrance fee that can range from $20,000 to $500,000 or more, plus ongoing monthly service fees that vary from around $2,000 to over $4,000. To search for CCRC’s visit Caring.com. Need Help? If you’re not sure what your mom needs, consider hiring an aging life care expert (AgingLifeCare.org) who can assess your mom and find her appropriate housing for a fee – usually between $300 and $800. Or you can use a senior care advising service like A Place for Mom (APlaceForMom.com) for free. They get paid from the senior living facilities in their network.

Kennedy Presidential inauguration. The sign is white with red and blue lettering and measures approximately 12 by 18 inches. It is in ver y good condition. On the back of the sign is the name of the person who removed this sign and the street it was removed from. Is this JFK memorabilia worth anything?

Vernon Kilns of Vernon, Calif., made dinnerware from 1931 to 1958.

A: Your set of dinnerware was made in Vernon, Calif., by Vernon Kilns. They were in business from 1931 to 1958. After World War II, the cost of production rose, and, in part due to the lower prices of imported china from Japan, the pottery could not compete and it resulted in their closing. Metlox Potteries purchased many of the Vernon molds and proceeded to produce some of the Vernon dishes for a short time. The pattern is “Organdie” and was one of Vernon Kilns more popular designs. It was created by Gale Turnbull and was produced from 1937 to 1958. There were variations on the pattern theme, including Tam-O-Shanter, Calico, Homespun, Tweed and Gingham. Your set would probably be worth $250 to $325. * * * Antiques expert and columnist Anne McCollam has recently retired and no longer receives inquiries nor answers reader letters. A: Your No Parking sign would appeal to collectors of JFK memorabilia. It was installed along the presidential motorcade route to the area where Kennedy was sworn in as president and where he gave his inaugural speech. Jan. 20, 1961, was also the day President Dwight Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon left office. Your sign has been selling in the range of $125 to $250, and could go higher depending on the buyer. * * * Q: This mark is on a set of dishes that my grandmother purchased in the 1950s. * On Jan. 9, 1493, Christopher Columbus, sailing near the Dominican Republic, sees three “mermaids” and describes them as “not half as beautiful as they are painted.” They were in reality manatees. Mythical mermaids have existed in seafaring cultures since the time of the ancient Greeks. * On Jan. 6, 1759, a 26-year-old George Washington marries Martha Dandridge Custis. Historical documents have revealed that Martha may not have been the great love of his life. Washington wrote cryptic yet passionate love letters to Sally Fairfax, the wife of a friend. * On Jan. 4, 1847, Samuel Colt rescues his faltering gun company by winning a contract to provide the U.S. government with 1,000 of his .44 caliber revolvers. Though never cheap, by the early 1850s, Colt revolvers were inexpensive enough to be a favorite with Americans headed westward during the California Gold Rush. * On Jan. 5, 1945, Japanese pilots receive the first order to become kamikaze, meaning “divine wind.” They needed little training to take planes full of explosives and crash them into ships. At Okinawa, they sank 30 ships and killed almost 5,000 Americans. * On Jan. 7, 1959, six days after the fall of the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship in Cuba, the U.S. government believes it can work with Fidel Castro and protect American interests in Cuba. Less than two years later, the U.S. severed diplomatic relations and launched the Bay of Pigs invasion. * On Jan. 8, 1962, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, is exhibited for the first time in America. * On Jan. 3, 1990, Panama’s Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega, after hiding at the Vatican embassy in Panama City, surrenders to U.S. military troops to face charges of drug trafficking and is flown to Miami. In 1992, the former dictator was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison. (c) 2021 Hearst Communications, Inc.

currency weakened, but the Confederacy continued to print the bills anyway. By 1864, one Confederate dollar was worth just three cents of the U.S. currency. The money was quickly becoming totally worthless, with a pound of ham selling for $300, a bar of soap for $50, and a man’s suit at $2,700. Today, Confederate currency is highly collectible, with bills in poorer condition started at $20, and those in good condition fetching thousands of dollars.

It’s waterproof, doesn’t absorb perspiration or oils, and is less likely to spread disease, making it a much cleaner option than its paper counterpart. Canada isn’t the only country doing this – at least 20 others have made the change to plastic. FINAL FACTS

• The United States went off the gold standard in 1933, which backed the value of currency in gold. Congress enacted a joint resolution nullifying the right of creditors to demand payment in gold for paper currency. • A one-dollar bill has 13 arrows, 13 leaves, 13 stars, and 13 stripes, symbolic of the original 13 colonies. • Old dollar bills are shredded and sold to companies that recycle them into various building materials. • The term “dirty money” is actually true. About 94 percent of paper bills are contaminated with bacteria, while seven percent are laced with dangerous pathogens.

Watching televised golf, you may hear a commentator mention that a player has “short sided” themselves, meaning they’ve missed the green on the same side as the pin.
