Obsolete Cereals (from page one) Ralston-Purina produced “Waffelos” from 1979 to 1984, describing the crunchy little waffle bites as “a sweetened cereal with artificial maple syrup flavor.” Waffelo Bill and his guitar-playing horse were the mascots. • Fill your bowl with Fruit Brute and you’d have a fruit-flavored cereal with lime-flavored marshmallows. Introduced by General Mills in 1974, packaging featured a werewolf aptly named Fruit Brute for its eight-year run. If you didn’t care for the lime marshmallows, you could opt for the vanilla-flavored bat-shaped ones in a cereal known as Yummy Mummy. Movie director Quentin Tarantino must have had a fondness for Fruit Brute, as he featured the cereal in his two movies, “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction.” • “Monster” cereals were a thing in the ‘70s. In addition to Yummy Mummy, there were Boo Berry, Count Chocola, and Frankenberry • General Mills introduced Sprinkle Spangles in 1993, star-shaped mini sugar cookie pieces covered with multi-colored sprinkles. TV commercials claimed that they “spangled every angle with sprinkles.” Their cartoon mascot was the Sprinkle Genie, voiced by Dom DeLuise, who promised, “You wish it, I dish it!” • If you believed the TV ad, Kellogg’s Puffa Puffa Rice was produced in an active volcano, which erupted the cereal right into your bowl. The rice cereal with a “brown cane sugar” coating, produced from 1967 to 1975, was actually produced in Battle Creek, Michigan, and had a Hawaiian theme in their packaging and advertising, ads that pledged “oceans of energy.”

was also the mascot for the short-lived banana variety, telling consumers, “My new Kellogg’s Banana Frosted Flakes have real appeal!” • Hitting the shelves in 1984, E.T. cereal had pieces shaped like the letters “E” and “T” with a chocolate and peanut butter combination flavor. The box and the ads both included the ExtraTerrestrial’s glowing finger pointing at the bowl of cereal, using the slogan “a glowing part of a good breakfast.”

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

by Mary Hunt
By Lucie Winborne
* Pinball was banned in most major cities from the early 1940s to the mid-1970s because it was considered a game of chance and, therefore, gambling. * Oysters can change genders back and forth. * The Zildjian Company was founded in 1623 by Avedis Zildjian, an Armenian alchemist who ended up making a type of cymbals instead. * Tobacco companies spend the most money on advertising in January, when many people make a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking, but the largest increase in new smokers actually occurs in the summer. * There’s a national pillow-fighting tournament in Japan. * A 43,000-square-foot room beneath the Lincoln Memorial that was forgotten about until 1974 is filled with concrete columns and has its own plant life and ecosystem, as well as graffiti from the original workers. * Intelligent people have more traces of copper and zinc in their hair. * The manchineel tree is one of the most toxic trees in the world. Its sap causes blisters, eating its apples can be potentially fatal, and the smoke from a burning manchineel can cause blindness. * Every day, around 18 acres of pizza are eaten in America. * At the U.S. Open and other U.S.based tennis tournaments, the men play with the slower, heavy-duty felt balls while the women play with the faster, regularduty felt version. *** Thought for the Day: “Everyone knows something I do not; therefore, everyone is my teacher.” -- Unknown (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
Secondhand Clothes, First-Class Style While most retail stores are hanging on Everyday by a thread due to COVID-19’s assault on the CHEAPSKATE U.S. economy, thrift stores, specifically consignby Mary Hunt the opposite problem; ment stores, are having business is booming! According to thredUP.com, a major secondhand shopping site, the resale apparel market will grow from $28 billion to $64 billion in the next five years. A consignment store is a type of resale shop where instead of relying on donations, people bring in items they wish to sell on the secondary market. When the items sell, the shop and seller share in the sale, often a 50-50 split. Consignment shops sell clothing, home goods, art, furniture and even books. However, apparel is the most popular category. Consignment shopping is an excellent way to find bargains on gently used clothing and also sell gently worn children’s and baby clothes for less than one-third of the retail price. And most cities now have specialty consignment shops specifically for babies, children and teens. Expect a consignment shop to have very high standards for what they will accept. For example: Clothes must be a current style; clothes must be brought in clean, and clothes must have no visible wear, holes or stains. Typically, your items will be put on the sales floor and displayed for 30 to 60 days. Once sold, you will receive 30% to 50% of the purchase price depending on that store’s policy. Most consignment shops have a process by which they reduce the sales price regularly until the item is sold or the time runs out. At that time, you have the option of either picking up your items or agreeing to have the shop donate them to a charity. Stores will often give you the choice of taking your proceeds outright or crediting it to your own store account. Most people discover that building their accounts to allow for shopping in the store is the best option. In this way, money rarely changes hands. Have you ever paid a lot of money for an outfit only to find you don’t like it after all (Who hasn’t?) but then feel reluctant to part with ®

clothes you paid a lot for and never wore for one reason or another? Consignment shopping solves the problem. The first step is to let go of the guilt and get rid of the clothes. When you start buying your clothes at consignment stores, that guilt is never there. If you decide you don’t like something you bought, take it back and consign it. You didn’t pay much for it in the first place, and you can use the money you get from consigning it to buy something else. If you don’t have a consignment store in your town, check out the nearest big city the next time you’re there. Even if you make a trip once or twice a year to clean out your closet, it will be worth the effort. These days, there’s no reason you should feel compelled to spend a large percentage of your income on new clothes. Let your kids see all the great bargains at a consignment store. Even your teens will be impressed, provided you scope out the best stores ahead of time. * * * Mary invites you to visit her at EverydayCheapskate.com, where this column is archived complete with links and resources for all recommended products and services. • Did you ever try Cap’n Crunch’s Polar Crunch? This was traditional Cap’n Crunch with blue cereal that changed color in milk. The pieces became red, green, or purple, while the milk changed to blue. 1982’s Choco Crunch mixed the regular crunchy corn squares with chocolate– flavored balls. • Mr. T first appeared on movie screens in 1982, starring as Clubber Lang in that year’s “Rocky III.” Further success followed with the television series “The A-Team.” Quaker launched Mr. T cereal in 1984, sweetened corn and oat bits with a taste similar to Cap’n Crunch, but in the shape of T’s. Mr. T was featured in advertising promos saying, “I pity the fool who don’t eat my cereal,” along with a cartoon version of the wrestler on the box. Inside the box was a prize packet of Mr. T stickers. • Another Cap’n Crunch taste-alike was Ralston’s Batman cereal, released in 1989. This time, the yellow corn and oat bits were shaped like bats. Kids loved the promotional Batman bank that was attached to the box, as well as a mail-order offer for a hologram Batman T-shirt and a glowin-the-dark Batman Frisbee. • Who doesn’t remember the 1980s TV commercials for Kellogg’s Nut ‘n Honey Crunch? The catchy ads featured people mistaking the name of the cereal for the phrase “Nothin’ Honey.” For example, “Whatcha eatin’?” or “What was that? I heard a noise!” answered by “It's Nut ‘n Honey.” Kellogg’s had previously marketed the same product as Honey & Nut Corn Flakes, but without much success. A name change and the memorable ad campaign changed all that, and “Nut ‘n Honey” became a catchphrase of the day. • Baby boomers might remember Linus the

choose a panel like SunPower®, where the inverter is built into each panel, so the entire panel and inverter is covered by a comprehensive 25-year warranty. Since each panel can operate independently, if something happens to one, it doesn’t affect the others. There is also more flexibility of how and where the panels can be installed, so sight lines can be minimized and the most efficient portions of your roof can be utilized.

It is a well-known mathematical fact that two wrongs don’t equal a right. Lesser known is the surprising notion that one doesn’t, either. The following letter from a reader culminates with the explosive assertion of a single disturbing wrong: “I just got this dog from the pound. She eats well and sleeps with me, and she’s very intelligent. But she keeps leaving me little poops and puddles in the house. I leave the door open and she still poops in the house, right by an open door. She is 4 years old or so, and the pound has no history on her. I have not beaten her yet, but I am about to.” Brute force is never an effective teaching tool. Most people, if told their child’s eye had been blackened not by a bully but by his English teacher because of his inability to spell, would run to the nearest happy hour full of ACLU lawyers and scream “civil rights violation!” And the teacher’s defense would be embarrassingly lackluster: “No, I never taught him how to spell, but I left the dictionary right there on his desk.” Dogs are not born housebroken. It is not a matter of better breeding, bad genes or big bucks. To date, with all that modern technology affords we humans and our canine counterparts, no breeder has been able to deliver into the world an inherently potty-trained dog. Or child. If you want your dog to perform his bodily functions out of doors, you have to let him know that. This is done through training. Training is essentially the creation of a shared, albeit limited, language between man and beast. The good news is that housebreaking is easy to achieve and takes less than a week to accomplish. The bad news is that a lot of people would prefer not to make even that minimal effort. Unfortunately, the headache that results packs enough of a wallop to lead a person down the wrong path -- toward abuse, squalor and abandonment. The basics of housebreaking boil down to the regulation of three components: food, water and walks. If you and your pooch are steadfast in your

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Turning Full Retirement Age in 2022? Consider Filing for Benefits This Month I write a column similar to this one every January. But I don’t mind plagiarizing myself because it contains a very important message for people planning to retire in 2022. January is a critical month for the hundreds of thousands of potential Social Security beneficiaries who are reaching 66 and 4 months, their socalled full retirement age, in 2022. The important message: all of them should at least consider the possibility of filing for their benefits this month, even though they may not be reaching their retirement age until later in the year. Please note that if you want to delay filing for your Social Security benefits until 70 to get the “delayed retirement credit” of almost 32% added to your monthly benefits, then you should forgo the procedure discussed in this column. But if you are not interested in that strategy, and plan to start your benefits at your FRA in 2022, then, as I said, you may want to consider filing for benefits in January. The reason for this early filing time frame has to do with some quirky and complicated features of Social Security’s earnings penalty provisions. Those provisions generally keep seniors who are still working off of Social Security’s rolls until they reach that magic full retirement age. The law essentially says if you are over 62 but under your full retirement age and are still working full time, you are not eligible for Social Security. Specifically, the rules require that the SSA deduct $1 from any retirement benefits you might be due for every $2 you earn over $19,560 in 2022. However, the rules say that once you reach your full retirement age, you are due full Social Security benefits even if you are still working and no matter how much money you are making. Let’s follow an example. Let’s say Ed was born in March 1956, which means he’ll reach his full retirement age of 66 and 4 months in July 2022. And let’s further say Ed generally makes about $80,000 per year and he plans to continue working indefinitely. Based on the earnings penalty rules I briefly outlined above, Ed figures he must wait until July (his full retirement age) to begin collecting his Social Security benefits. As I said, at that magical point the earnings penalty rules no longer apply, and he can get his Social Security. And prior to that, he’s making way more than the $19,560 income threshold. But here is why Ed should check into applying for Social Security in January. Congress set up a more lenient earnings threshold for the year you reach your full retirement age. Specifically, it says you can earn up to $51,960 between January and the month you reach your full retirement age and still get Social Security benefits. And even if you earn more than $51,960, you lose only $1 from your benefits for every $3 you make over that threshold. Ed is going to make $40,000 between January and June (i.e., before he reaches the magic age

of 66 and 4 months). And that’s under the $51,960 year, or if you reach your full retirement age later threshold for 2022, which means Ed is due benefits in the year, you should probably just wait until your beginning in January. He does NOT have to wait FRA to file for your Social Security benefits. I know these rules are complicated and the until July to apply for his Social Security checks. But there is a bit of a catch. By starting his math in the examples above might be difficult to benefits in January, Ed will be accepting a slightly follow. But my overall message is easy to follow: reduced amount. (Benefits are reduced roughly If you’re reaching age 66 and 4 months in early to one-half of 1% for each month they are taken before mid 2022, you might want to talk to a Social Security representative sometime this month to find out full retirement age.) How to Write an Obituary for a Loved One
DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you provide any tips on how to write an obituary? My father, who has terminal cancer, has asked me to write his obituary, which will be published in the funeral program and run in our local newspaper. I have absolutely no experience with anything like this and could use some guidelines and advice. Can you help? -- Challenged Son Dear Challenged: I’m very sorry to hear about your dad’s prognosis. Writing your dad’s obituary would be a nice way for you to honor him and sum up his life, not to mention avoiding any possible mistakes that sometimes occur when obituaries are hurriedly written at the time of death. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips and tools to help you write it. Contact the Newspaper Before you start writing your dad’s obituary, your first step is to check with the newspaper you want it to appear in. Some newspapers have specific style guidelines or restrictions on length, some only accept obituaries directly from funeral homes, and some only publish obituaries written by newspaperTUES., staff members. Feb. 16, 2021
Also note that many newspapers offer free public service death listings too, which only include the name of the person who died along with the date and location of death and brief details about the funeral or memorial service. Obituary Contents Depending on how detailed you want to be, the most basic information in an obituary usually would include your dad’s full name (and nickname if relevant), age, date of birth, date of death, where he was living when he died, the name of a significant other (alive or dead), and details of the funeral service (public or private). If public, include the date, time, and location of service. Include a photo of your dad. Other relevant information you may also want to include could be: . Cause of death (optional); . Place of birth and his parents’ names; his other survivors including his children, other relatives, friends and pets and where they live; . Family members who preceded his death; . High school and colleges he attended and degrees earned; . His work history and military service; . His hobbies, accomplishments and any awards he received; . His church or religious affiliations; . Clubs, membership in civic and fraternal organizations;

. Charities or special causes he feels strongly about that he would like people to donate to, either in addition to or in lieu of flowers or other gifts. . Any appropriate comments about en dearing attributes of his character or standing in the community. Need Help? If you need some help writing your dad’s obituary there are free online resources you can turn to like Legacy.com, which provides tips and articles at Legacy.com/advice/guide-to-writingan-obituary. Or consider the 25-page e-book “Writing an Obituary in Four Easy Steps” available at DearPersonObits.com for $5. This guide will help you gather the details of your dad’s life so you can write an obituary that will reflect his personality and story. Online Memorials Many families today also choose to post their loved one’s obituaries online and create digital memorials. Some good sites that offer this are MyKeeper.com, GatheringUs.com and EverLoved.com, which provide a central location where family and friends can visit to share stories, memories and photos to celebrate your dad’s life. Or, if your dad used Facebook, you could also turn his profile into a memorial (you’ll need to show proof of death) where family and friends can visit and share anytime. * * *

Singing Cowboy Inspired Artist Q: This is a photo of a pair of plaster figurines that my aunt gave my husband years ago. She told him to take good care of them, so we did. Marked on the front of the horse are the words “Old Paint” and on the singing cowboy, “Tex.” The horse measures 10 by two inches, and the singing cowboy stands 11 inches tall. Both my aunt and husband have passed away, and now I would like to know more about these figurines. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
A: Dux Porcelain Manufactory made your Royal Dux figurine. The company was founded by E. Eichler in 1860, in Bohemia. The pink triangle mark was applied to the base and it was used from 1900 to 1918. They produced elegant dinnerware, figurines and busts. Most of the figurines were inspired by Art Nouveau designs and Art Deco designs. Royal Dux figurines values are not what they were in the 1990s and early 2000s. Figurines similar to yours were selling in the range of $1000 to $2000. Today collectors are just not as interested in Royal Dux pieces and their value has plummeted to several hundred dollars.

Anderson’s chalk ware figurines were inspired by his woodcarvings.
A: Your figurines are good examples of chalk ware, and they were inspired by the woodcarvings by H. S. “Andy” Anderson. He was born in 1893 and died in 1960. The cowpoke is a caricature of a cowboy that Anderson saw when he was in Wyoming. Anderson was so amused with the rough and ready cowboy he decided to carve his likeness. From that time on, he created caricatures of people and horses. Your chalk ware figurines were made around 1936. “Old Paint” would probably be worth $25 to $50 and “Tex” $50 to $75. * * *

* On Jan. 22, 1779, famed Tory outlaw Claudius Smith meets his end on the gallows in Goshen, New York. Nicknamed the “Cowboy of the Ramapos” for his use of guerrilla tactics against Patriot civilians, legend has it that Smith’s skull was filled with mortar and included in the edifice of the Goshen Court House. * On Jan. 21, 1789, “The Power of Sympathy or the Triumph of Nature Founded in Truth” is printed in Boston, the first novel by an American writer to be published in America. Early editions did not carry the author’s name, but a later printing credited Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton. * On Jan. 23, 1855, John Moses Browning, sometimes referred to as the “father of modern firearms,” is born in Ogden, Utah. Many of the guns whose names evoke the history of the American West -- Winchester, Colt, Remington and Savage -- were based on Browning’s designs. * On Jan. 17, 1953, a prototype Chevrolet Corvette sports car makes its debut at General Motors’ Motorama auto show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The Corvette was named for a fast type of naval warship. * On Jan. 19, 1977, President Gerald Ford pardons Tokyo Rose, a Japanese-American woman named Iva Toguri, who broadcast Axis propaganda over the radio to Allied troops during World War II. * On Jan. 20, 1980, President Jimmy Carter proposes to the United States Olympic Committee that the 1980 Summer Olympics be moved from Moscow if the Soviet Union failed to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. The USOC later voted to boycott the Moscow games. * On Jan. 18, 1996, Major League Baseball owners unanimously approve interleague play for the 1997 season. The owners’ vote, which called for each team to play 15 or 16 interleague games, broke a 126-year tradition of teams playing only within their league during the regular season. • Naturally, there would be a cereal honoring the best-selling doll of all time! Kellogg’s was responsible for three of them – Breakfast with Barbie, Barbie Fairytopia, and Barbie MultiGrain. The Multi-Grain variety, a 2008 creation, consisted of red and purple heart-shaped pieces, and, of course, marshmallows! These were shaped like butterflies, hand mirrors, jewels, and flowers. The back of the bright pink box included games and cut-outs, such as Barbie cardboard picture frames and badges.

Hitting those sky high, short distance drives can be infuriating to the majority of golfers. Most golfers assume they’ve just teed the ball too high, but there are some more critical issues to attend if you struggle with this crisis. The majority of “pop ups’ occur when the club is approaching on too descending of an angle of attack. The steepness of the approach causes the ball to hit the higher part of the club, thus creating the high, weak trajectory. Many golfers shift their upper bodies and heads toward the ball in the downswing creating a steeper angle of attack.
