TRIVIA NEW SFRONT TUES., NOV. 11

Although Charles Darrow is remembered as the inventor of the game Monopoly, that’s not quite the truth. In fact, Darrow took a game that already existed, modified it somewhat and had it patented. Because of his earnest marketing efforts, PROOFit eventually grew in popularity to become the number one selling game of all time.

• Darrow approached both Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers to see if they would buy the rights to the game, but was turned down. Parker Brothers felt it was too long and complex. But when he started selling over 5,000 copies a year, Parker Brothers took notice and soon bought the rights to the game from Darrow. • Within a year, 20,000 sets of the game were being produced every week. Monopoly ended up being the best-selling board game in America that year, and it made Darrow the first millionaire game designer in history. • When Parker Brothers was subsequently sued by people who claimed to have created similar games first, the company bought out the rights to all of them and re-negotiated the royalty agreement they had with Darrow. • Charles Darrow died in 1967 at the age of 78. In 1970, Atlantic City placed a commemorative plaque in his honor on the Boardwalk, near the corner of Park Place. • Because Baltic and Mediterranean Avenues are the lowest priced properties in the Monopoly game, the Atlantic City Commissioner of Public Works tried to have the names changed. But fans of the game, along with the president of Parker Brothers, successfully lobbied for the city to keep the names as they are. • Although not fully substantiated, rumors abound that during World War II, special Monopoly sets were delivered to POW camps in Germany which secretly contained files, a compass, a map, and real money that prisoners could use in case they escaped. • After World War II, sales of the game skyrocketed to well over a million a year.

by David Uffington

By Samantha Weaver

● It was Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw who made the following sage observation: “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” ● You might be surprised to learn that the fastest flying insect is the dragonfly; it’s been clocked at speeds up to 35 mph. ● In Japan, a black cat crossing your path is considered to be good luck, not bad. ● If you have trouble getting along with your in-laws, you might dream of getting payback someday. A man named Charles Webb did just that -- on a grand scale. While in high school, Webb dated a girl named Eve; Eve’s mother, however, didn’t think Webb was good enough for her daughter and did everything she could to keep them apart. The two eventually got married, and Webb wrote the novel “The Graduate” ... yes, the one that was turned into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman. The character of the drunken, promiscuous mother-inlaw was based on the woman who’d tried to sabotage his relationship for years. ● When archaeologists discovered the tomb of King Tut, one of the objects they found inside was a bronze razor -- and it was still sharp enough to use. ● Washington, D.C., has a lower marriage rate than any other major U.S. city. ● The breed of dog known as the Great Dane didn’t come from Denmark; it’s German in origin. ● President George Washington reportedly was terrified at the thought of being buried alive. He insisted that his burial not take place until at least three days after his death, just to make sure he was really deceased. ● The starling is the world’s most common bird. *** Thought for the Day: “Few things are harder to put up with than a good example.” -- Mark Twain

A:

Canadian actress Bree Williamson played the murdered heiress (in flashback scenes, as we backtracked trying to figure out who killed her) in the now-defunct drama. I, too, was obsessed with “Deception” back in 2013 and was sad it was canceled. Bree is perhaps best known for her nine-year run as Jessica Buchanan on “One Life to Live.” Nowadays you can catch her in the Hallmark original movie “Portrait of Love,” which premieres March 14 at 9/8c. She plays April Littleton, a world-renowned fashion photographer who Bree Williamson returns to her small town to help raise money for its centennial celebration. There she finds there’s a lot to love about her hometown, including the boy she left behind. I spoke with Bree about her latest role, and she told me why she chose this project: “I empathize with being at a crossroads in your life, where you’re doing really well and you’re feeling successful and everything’s great, but you’re not feeling completely fulfilled. April goes to her hometown, and she’s swept away in the journey of finding love. She’s a really cool character. I thought it was written very well, and it’s a really sweet love story that my son can watch.” ***

February 24 was World Spay Day, and we all had fun putting the sexy in something that is decidedly not. But despite its lack of sizzle, anyone who’s ever set foot inside an animal shelter, or inside Mexico or any Central or South American country, or inside any Asian, African or Eastern European country, understands the importance of the practice. Here in Southern California, you can’t throw a Kong without hitting an animal rescue group -- and still no fewer than 300,000 dogs and cats are killed in California shelters every year. While the euthanasia rate has dipped significantly in cities like Los Angeles, which has an organized no-kill agenda fueled by heavy hitters Best Friends Animal Society and the NKLA coalition, this dragon can’t be slayed until everyone gets on board with spay/neuter. The single most important thing you can do as an animal lover is spay or neuter your dog or cat -- and even those dogs and cats who aren’t yours. I know nothing about cats, but I learned a little about the practice of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) when I called Stray Cat Alliance a few years back to report a large feral cat colony at an abandoned apartment complex. They were familiar with the colony and said, “Thanks so much for caring. Would you like to TNR?” Hmmm, sounds kinky. “Um, sure?” And so I spent the next month getting up at 3 a.m., grabbing my “TNR kit” -- flashlight, fleece, gloves, trash bags, smelly cat food -- and heading over to the ghostplex to check and reset traps. While I personally never trapped a cat, I did trap a possum, who had to be cut loose in the dead of night because he got his jaws stuck on the cage. Poor guy played dead for two hours while we fought with wire cutters

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Full Retirement Age Going Up Q:

You keep saying the full retirement age is 66. But as you know, many of us have to wait longer to get full Social Security benefits. For example, I was born in 1955 and I have to be 66 and 2 months. What I want to know is this: If I want to take my Social Security early, do I have to wait until age 62 and 2 months?

A:

You can start your Social Security at age 62, if you want. Although Congress increased the full retirement age, they did not change the early retirement age. It stays at age 62 no matter how old you have to be to get full retirement. Social Security’s full retirement age was 65 for about the first half century the program was in existence. Then in the 1980s, as part of a big package of Social Security reforms, Congress raised the retirement age. But they did it in gradual steps. The first people impacted were those born in 1938. They had to be age 65 and 2 months to get full benefits. People born in 1939 had to be 65 and 4 months. The full retirement age went up in 2-month increments until it leveled off at 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954. Beginning with 1955 dates of birth, we start climbing in 2-month increments again until we reach 1960. Anyone born in 1960 or later must be 67 to get full Social Security benefits. * * *

Eyeglasses Cause Skin to Blister DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently purchased two new pairs of prescription eyeglasses that are in plastic frames. Forty-eight hours after I began wearing the first pair, the bridge of my nose became ver y red, and small, flat blisters appeared. The same behind both ears -- anywhere the plastic touched my skin. I got this to heal with cortisone cream, and a week later I tried the other pair. This time, the reaction came within about 14 hours and involved swelling of my nose as well as the blistering and bright redness. What causes this -- an allergy or some sort of chemical burn? The area itched yet felt like a burn and peeled after the cortisone treatment brought the blistering down. -- N.W.

ANSWER: This sounds like a case of contact dermatitis, probably related to the chemicals used in the manufacturing of the plastic. Some people are just sensitive to any of the many chemicals used; however, I am increasingly seeing bad reactions to manufactured goods, especially to those made overseas. Not every country has the same safeguards we have in place in North America. Some of these chemicals are volatile and disappear after a short while. It’s possible that washing the glasses in hot, soapy water could have been able to remove them. However, in your case, the reaction was so strong that I would avoid that brand in the future. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have arthritis in my neck. Choosing a Place For Mom Q:

I am 58, a widow and work fulltime. My mother is not well and now needs to live in a place that offers full-time care. She is on a limited budget, and I help out financially as much as possible. Because of my work schedule, I can only search out a possible spot for her on weekends. Do you have some suggestions as to how to find the best location for her? If so, please also recommend how I can locate a list for the best questions to be asking to help me evaluate these places. It would be of great help!

Page 13

brary is available to help. They will have staffers who are knowledgeable and willing to guide you through these resources and will provide printouts to take with you. It is always a wise idea is to visit prospective locations to check out their facilities firsthand. With a personal visit you can see what ammenities they have, observe the staff at work, see the general environment and the quality of living that is provided. Speak with the management about costs, and talk with as many residents as you can. They will speak from their own experience about the friendliness of the staff and quality of the care they receive. Every home and location has its own personality and features that make a difference. Before making your final choice, you will need to consider costs and likely make compromises. The most important factor, of course, is how well the management and staff will take care of your mother and make her quality of life as comfortable as possible.
