• Following his marriage, Goodyear moved back to Philadelphia and operated a thriving hardware store. However, his lenient practice of extending credit caught up with him, and the losses from non-paying customers caused the business to fail. Because he was in the midst of perfecting and patenting several inventions, he refused to declare bankruptcy since it meant losing his legal rights to those inventions. As a result, he was thrown into debtor’s prison for failure to pay debts.

• He managed to secure loans for his experiments, which began by working magnesia into the rubber, an additive that seemed to take away the stickiness. His first creation was rubber shoes, lined with flannel. But the stickiness returned, and his investors soon withdrew their money. Another New York businessman who believed in Goodyear’s potential advanced him several thousand dollars to continue the work, but the financial panic of 1837 wiped out his entire fortune. Once again, Goodyear was penniless. He and his family were living in an empty rubber factory, subsisting on fish he caught in New York Harbor. • Although living in poverty, Goodyear continued his experiments, adding different chemicals, such as nitric acid, lead oxide, and sulfur, then boiling the mixture. Finally, in 1839 he had his breakthrough when he discovered that heating natural rubber after adding sulfur created a vulcanized rubber. • It would seem that the tide had turned for Goodyear, but with his history of financial failures he couldn’t convince his backers to invest in him again. He continued on in dire poverty, pawning his household goods for money. He continued to improve on his processes for another five years before he felt confident enough to apply for a patent. • Even with his patent secured, Goodyear’s life did not turn around, and he was plagued with troubles. Six of his 12 children had died in infancy, he lived in constant poverty, he was jailed twice for failure to pay debts, and when he died at age 60 he was in debt for more than $200,000. Fortunately, over the years after his death, royalties accumulated and allowed his family to live comfortably. • Thirty-eight years after his death, Frank Seiberling founded a rubber company, which he named Goodyear Tire & Rubber in tribute to the inventor. Today, this billion-dollar company is the world’s largest rubber business, but the Goodyear family derived no capital from it. ‪

Adopting a new dog can feel a lot like that famous opening line. You’ve just come home with a new furry companion, in some cases plucked from the jaws of death. In all likelihood, he’s latched on to you as his new best friend, the person he loves more than any other in the world. It’s a great feeling. But there’s almost always more to the story. Unless you live alone and prefer a solitary existence, your dog will have to get along with people other than you -- namely, your significant other, your children, neighbors, friends and extended family. If you plan to introduce him to the world beyond your home and yard, he’ll have to tolerate strangers, too. The following two letters from readers tell We scoop, disinfect yo the tale of two adoptions. The first reads as follows: “I just adopted ‘Red’ a week ago from a woman who rescued her from a shelter. She is showing signs of fear aggression: She has growled twice while we were walking, once at a person rolling a suitcase, and once at a person bent over gardening. She has also growled while in our yard at people she could hear talking next door in their yard and also at the occasional inanimate object. “Red plays well at the dog park and with my children. She displays no signs of food or toy aggression. “I work full time and am concerned that I don’t have the time to train her properly for aggression issues. The growling was not disclosed to me upon adoption. Your advice would be appreciated.” This next letter could be right out of Dickens, with his stories of children forced to endure abuses at the hands of unfeeling or unthinking adults. Herbal Supplements Don’t Always Deliver Sometimes we just don’t have the appetite we used to, or the taste of foods has changed. To get as much nutrition as possible, many of us have turned to dietary herbal supplements. The problem is that we might not be getting what we expect in those pills. Now the New York State attorney general has gone after companies that don’t deliver what they’ve promised. Cease and desist letters have been sent to four major retailers that sell their own store brand of herbal supplements because either the supplements contained none of the promised ingredients or there were contaminants or fillers. According to the attorney general’s website, contaminants and fillers included “rice, beans, pine, citrus, asparagus, primrose, wheat, houseplant, wild carrot and others.” Only 21 percent of supplements tested contained any of the herbs they were supposed to have. At one retailer, a mere 4 percent of tested supplements contained the material shown on the label. The attorney general now has asked for information from all four retailers about the processing of these supplements, as well as quality control. What does this mean for those of us who use herbal supplements to try to increase our nutritional intake or to adjust a medical condition? It means we need to be careful. The more drugs we’re on, the greater the risk of interactions. For those of us with compromised immune systems, the contaminants in supplements can have adverse effects. Before taking any supplements, ask your doctor for a recommendation. Remember: The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have to approve supplements before they end up on store shelves.

Porcelain Tea Set Made In Czechoslovakia Q:

I would appreciate if you would tell me the value of the porcelain tea set seen in this photo. It was given to me by my aunt and must be 75 years old. The set is a ser vice for six and consists of cups, saucers, dessert plates and a sugar bowl and cream pitcher. The dishes are decorated with multi-colored flowers and gold trim all against a white background. Marked on the back of each piece are the words “Phoenix China” above an eagle. Below that are illegible numbers or words. Thank you for any information you can provide.

Your vase was made by Shawnee Pottery, a company that produced pottery in Zanesville, Ohio, from 1937 to 1961. They made vases, planters, kitchenware, dinnerware, cookie jars and lamp bases. Sears Roebuck, Procter and Gamble, and major dime stores were a few of the retailers who sold Shawnee Pottery’s products. Your vase was made around 1950 and would sell in an antiques shop anywhere from $25 to $50. If your mother likes her vase, she should keep it. * * *

This mark is on the bottom of a carnival glass pitcher that was my grandmother’s. It is purple, decorated with grapes, leaves, cables, stands about 8 inches tall, has a saw-tooth rim and a smooth handle. It is in mint condition. Someone told me the pattern is “Grape and Cable” and it was made by Northwood. Anything you can tell me about its histor y, age and value will be appreciated.
