Vol. XI Issue 16

• With the success of the B7, Bombardier expanded into military vehicles and became a major supplier in the World War II effort. After the war, he pushed ahead to improve his inventions, producing a 12-passenger snowmobile, which was an immediate winner with police departments, the timber industry, and mining companies. An 18-passenger model quickly followed, which was used by schools in the snowy climate of Quebec and Ontario. • Bombardier was soon designing vehicles to undertake difficult terrains, such as swamps, bogs, and mud. Some had tracks for traction, while others had an interchangeable system of wheels and skis. In 1953, he introduced the all-terrain Muskeg tractor, capable of hauling skiers on back roads or up a mountain slope. • Perhaps his best-known triumph came along in 1953. Using a lighter engine, Bombardier created the Ski-Doo snowmobile, a $900 machine for outdoor recreation lovers. Originally slated to be called the Ski-Dog, intended to replace the dogsled, it became the Ski-Doo when a painter misread the name and painted Ski-Doo on the prototype. Mass production of the unit began in 1959, and was immediately embraced not only by recreationists, but hunters, prospectors, surveyors, missionaries, and trappers as well. Bombardier’s company was enjoying annual sales of $3.5 million by the end of the 1950s. •

Along with his genius mechanical abilities, Joseph was devoted to community service and had a great love of music, singing in the church choir and accompanying his children on the piano. At the peak of an exceptional career, he died at age 56. Following his death, the familyowned business expanded into locomotives and aircraft, and today Learjet is one of their subsidiaries. ‪

● In 1916, the town of Erwin, Tennessee, used a train’s derrick car to hang an elephant for the crime of murder. ● You might be surprised to learn that Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States, didn’t vote in a single presidential election until his own name was on the ballot. ● If you leave a faucet running for a single minute, approximately 3.5 gallons of water will be washed down the drain. ● It was the spring of 1936, and John Steinbeck was working on his novel “Of Mice and Men.” He was also working on training his new puppy, Toby. The training evidently wasn’t going well; one day, Toby chewed up half of Steinbeck’s handwritten manuscript -- the only copy. The author took the setback pretty well, it seems: A few days after the incident, he wrote to a friend, “I was pretty mad but the poor little fellow may have been acting critically. I didn’t want to ruin a good dog on a [manuscript] I’m not sure is good at all. He only got an ordinary spanking with his punishment flyswatter.” ● It’s been reported that Elvis Presley knew by heart every word spoken in the film “Patton.” ● If you’re like 7 percent of American workers, you had a job at McDonald’s at some point in your life. ● According to ancient Chinese medical practice, doctors only got paid once their patients became healthy again. *** Thought for the Day: “Hell is a half-filled auditorium.” -- Robert Frost (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Slamming: is when a phone company changes your service without your permission. If you find charges for this on your phone bill, call immediately and insist you be switched back. Caller ID spoofing: This makes a phone number show up on your Caller ID that might encourage you to take the call. For example, it might appear that your bank or credit-card company is calling you, and you might be tempted to go ahead and give the personal information the caller asks for. Card companies never call for such personal information.

One-ring scams: This is one of the new ones. Here’s how it works: Your cellphone rings once. The calling area code appears to be a domestic one, and the temptation is to call back to see who it was. The problem: The return call actually goes to a pay-per-call international number that might incur outrageously large fees just for connecting, and more fees every minute. Be sure you’re familiar with international area codes that are often tied to scams, such as 809 (Dominican Republic), 284 (British Virgin Islands), 473 (Grenada) and 876 (Jamaica). Don’t return any calls unless you know for certain who just called your number.

Frank Winfield Woolworth had a brand-new idea back in 1878, the “five-and-dime” store. Here’s some history of his business endeavors that made “Wooworths” a household name. • The Woolworth family were farmers in upstate New York, but farming wasn’t Frank’s career choice. After finishing school, he found work at the local dry goods store where he learned about the retail trade. The experience sparked a few ideas for a starting a store of his own. • In 1878, when Frank was 26, he borrowed $300 from his boss to open Woolworth’s Great Five Cent Store in Utica, New York. Within months, the store had failed. Refusing to give up, Woolworth tried Lancaster, Pennsylvania for another store, using the same sign he had used in Utica.

Q:

Can you give me any scoop on the new “American Horror Stor y”? I’m going through some serious withdrawals! -- Jeanette F., via email

A: Well, I’ve got good news and bad news. Jessica Lange, who’s been a mainstay on the scary series since the first season, announced at Paleyfest that she would not be returning for the show’s 13-episode fifth season. She told the “AHS” panel’s moderator: “I’m done ... We’ve had a great run here. I have absolutely loved doing these four characters that I’ve had the opportunity to play, and in all madness, I love the writers and (executive producer) Ryan (Murphy), and the insanity of Jessica Lange shooting it.” Along with the previously announced addition of Lady Gaga to the cast of “American Horror Story: Hotel,” we’ve also learned that Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson and Wes Bentley will be joining the series this go-round. There are unofficial reports that Kathy Bates and Evan Peters also are set to return. “AHS: Hotel” will premiere in late October on FX. ***

Q:

Can you tell me when/if “The Last Ship” and “Murder in the First” will be back? -- Chris K., Summerfield, Fla.

A:

The Eric Dane-starring TNT action/ drama series will be back this June for its second season with 13 new episodes (up from 10 in the first season). “Murder in the First” -- the TNT crime drama starring Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson -- will be back for a 10-episode second season sometime this summer. ***

Why We’re Not Retiring

Complaints about boomers taking (or staying in) jobs go back for years. Critics became more vocal when the recession came along. We were supposed to retire and make room for the next generation to take the slots we’d been occupying. But we’re still hanging in there, often past the typical retirement age. There are a few reasons why many of us seniors are still working, often at part-time jobs. We don’t need a full-time paycheck because we have retirement pensions and/or Social Security. But we need the extra cash because that income isn’t enough. However, soap and water wash the spores off and are effective where sanitizers are not, so soap and water should be used in cases of known or suspected C. diff diarrhea. Sanitizers also are not effective against norovirus, another infectious diarrhea. They also can’t remove grease. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After two years of seeing several doctors and being misdiagnosed and treated with wrong medications, my 27-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Her joint pain has been constant. What kind of long-term damage has been done during this time? -- A.F.

M.D.

Hand Sanitizers vs. Hand Washing DEAR DR. ROACH: One encounters many forms of “hand sanitizer” products these days: in medical waiting rooms, restrooms, public places and in our kitchen. These are waterless, very quick drying products; we even have them in our automobile. When one has many daily occasions to clean the hands, is it better (for your skin) to use soap and water, or the modern hand-sanitizer products? -- N.M.G.

A rheumatologist experienced in psoriatic arthritis is essential. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: During a checkup with my internist, I was told that I have a rather large lipoma on my back. I was told that it is totally harmless and can be removed if it bothers me. Now I realize that I am somewhat concerned about it, as I had ovarian cancer two years ago. Can I really be sure it is benign without a biopsy? I don’t want to find out in a few years that it is cancerous. -- S.R.

ANSWER: A lipoma is a very common fatty tumor. They almost always are benign. If there is a suspicion of malignancy (called liposarcoma), an MRI scan can be done or a biopsy obtained. Surgery is seldom required, except for cosmetic reasons. I don’t believe that you are at higher risk for this being the rare cancerous type simply because of your history. YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

How to Apply for Social Security Benefits I have written lots of columns that help you decide when to start your Social Security benefits. But once you make that decision, how do you go about signing up for them? That’s the focus of today’s column. First, you’ve got to gather the documents you may need. What official papers or other evidence the Social Security Administration might require depends on the kind of benefit you are trying to get. The most common would be retirement benefits. To get such benefits, you have to prove you are old enough to qualify for them. SSA has been taking retirement claims for about 80 years now. And they know from experience that the most reliable record of your age is a birth certificate recorded before your 5th birthday. Today, almost all of us have such an official record of our birth. But I remember in my formative years of working for SSA in the early 1970s, it was fairly common for people retiring at that time (they would have been born in the early 1900s) to have no public birth certificate. We spent a lot of time searching old census or school records trying to help those folks prove their age. If your birth was not recorded in the city or county where you were born, SSA will accept a baptismal certificate, assuming you were baptized before your 5th birthday. If you don’t have a birth or baptismal record, then SSA will help you find some other evidence of your birth -- like those census record I got for people retiring back in the 1970s. Having said all that, there is a chance SSA won’t need any proof of your birth because it already exists either in their records or in other government records to which the agency has access. You really won’t know until you are applying for your Social Security benefits, so it’s best just to have your evidence of birth ready to go. (When I filed for Social Security, I did not need to provide a birth certificate. But when my wife filed, she did.) One final note on birth records: If you need to provide one, it must be an original document, or a copy certified by the agency from which you obtained it.

Retailers (from page page 3) $500 million in debt, they sold out to a Dubaibased company. • It should be no surprise that Walmart is the #1 retailer in America. Oklahoma-born Sam Walton went to work at a Des Moines, Iowa J.C. Penney store as a management trainee at age 22, just three days after his college graduation. Earning $75 a month, Walton stayed about 18 months before his World War II military service. After the war, he borrowed $20,000 from his father-in-law and purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas. By the early 1960s, Walton and his brother owned 15 Ben Franklin stores. In 1962, Walton opened his first Wal-Mart store (later changed to Walmart) in Rogers, Arkansas. Five years later, the family owned 24 stores, with $12.7 million in annual sales. Five years after that, there were 51 stores, with sales of $78 million. In 1980, there were 276 stores, and by 1989, Walmart became the nation’s #1 retailer. Today, the company employs 2.2 million people worldwide, ringing up more than 200 million customers each week in 11,000 stores in 27 countries. • Sebastian Kresge was working as a traveling salesman in the late 1800s, peddling goods to all 19 Woolworth’s stores. He made the decision to open his own store and invested $8,000 (about $227,000 in today’s dollars) to open a five-and-dime in Memphis, Tennessee. By 1912, he had grown it to an 85-store chain, and by 1924, Kresge was worth about $375,000,000. That translates to nearly $5.2 billion today. In 1962, Kresge opened his first K-Mart store in Garden City, Michigan, and that store is still in operation today. In 2005, the K-Mart Corporation purchased Sears for $11 billion. ‪
