• Modern golf was invented by the Scots, and by the mid-1400s it had become so popular that King James II outlawed it. He felt his subjects were wasting too much time playing the game when they should be doing something productive and useful. He believed his archers were losing the edge in their shooting ability because they were spending more time hitting the little ball around than they were in training for the kingdom’s defense. • America’s first 18-hole golf course was constructed in 1892 on a sheep farm in Downer’s Grove, Illinois. When businessman Blair McDonald moved to this town, he began constructing the course with his colleagues because he loved playing the game so much. The Downer’s Grove Golf Course is still operating after all these years, although it has since been downsized to just nine holes. Golf: Turn to page 3

• There are many theories about how the game of golf actually originated. Many believe it began as a sport played by the Romans called ‘paganica,’ which involved whacking a feather-filled leather ball with a crooked stick toward a target.

• In frustration – and also in rebellion against the popular flat-chested look of the flapper – Ida and William invented the first form-fitting bra which had two separate rounded pockets. Since all women are not equally endowed, Ida invented the cup size. She later designed different models for every stage of a woman’s life. • During the 1949 British Open, Harry Bradshaw accidentally drove a ball into a beer bottle which broke the bottle’s neck, and the ball ended up inside the bottle. To avoid a penalty, Bradshaw played it where it lay. He swung his club and smashed the bottle, sending the major portion of it spinning away about 30 feet. The ball didn’t move. • In 1975, golfer Perry Crowley of Connecticut hit a low drive into a lake. * It was Henry Brooks Adams, American historian and descendant of two U.S. presidents, who made the following sage observation: “They know enough who know how to learn.” * In show business, a name can make or break you, and many aspiring stars have tried to make themselves more appealing by getting rid of the name they were born with. Take famed film noir actor Peter Lorre: He was born Laszlo Lowenstein. Beloved cowboy actor Roy Rogers was named Leonard Slye; Doris Day was originally Doris Kappelhoff; and Natasha Gurdin changed her name to Natalie Wood. And would Boris Karloff have been so well-known as a villain if he’d used his given name, William Henry Pratt? * Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of “Tarzan of the Apes” and its 25 sequels, never actually visited Africa. * If you’re of a certain age and facing up to wrinkles, you might be interested to learn that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, one of the top causes of skin wrinkles is your habitual sleeping position. Rounding out the top five contributing factors are sun exposure, gravity, smoking and facial expressions. * An anteater can grow to be 6 feet long, yet its mouth is only 1 inch wide. * Reportedly, anyone caught in the jaws of a crocodile can release him- or herself instantly by pressing on the animal’s eyeballs (though I cannot personally attest to the veracity of this claim). * In a recent survey of nearly 1,500 American adults, only 36 percent of respondents could correctly name all three branches of the United States government. Even more disturbing, a full 35 percent couldn’t name even one branch. *** Thought for the Day: “It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.” -- Oscar Wilde

SUEDE SPOT REMOVER. Recently I managed to get some kind of ugly gunk on the suede portion of my leather shoe. I grabbed the Folex Carpet Spot Remover (my favorite for carpet spots) and an old toothbrush and went to work on it. It worked fabulously! I have no connection with the Folex company, but have found stains do not reappear later when using this product, which was recommended by a professional carpet cleaner years ago. Thought I’d share this. -- Melanie HANDY ICE PACK. Everyone should have at least a couple of ice packs in their home, at the ready to treat a sprained ankle, nasty bruise or other injury. But don’t spend money buying the ones at the drug store, when you can so easily make your own: Double-bag one cup of liquid dish soap by pouring the soap into a Ziploc bag and sealing it.

“Why don’t you play golf with Fred anymore?” Bob’s wife asked. “Well,” said Bob, “would you golf with a sneak who shaves strokes off his score and moves his ball when you aren’t looking?” “Absolutely not!” said his wife. “Well,” he said, “I guess Fred won’t either.”
As two golfers were teeing up at the 10th hole, they noticed two men in a fishing boat on the lake next to them. “Look at those idiots,” one of them said, “fishing in the rain in an aluminum boat in this lightning storm!”

Because August 5th is National Underwear Day (no, we’re not kidding!) let’s look at a few stories behind these normally concealed garments that are so... close to us. • Abram Nathaniel Spanel was a prolific inventor who had amassed over 2,000 patents in his lifetime. Among his many creations he invented a garment bag designed so a vacuum cleaner could be hooked up to it in order to suck out any moths that might be inside. Spanel founded the International Latex Corporation in Rochester, New York in 1932 to make items out of latex rubber, such as bathing caps, aprons, hot pads, slippers, baby clothing, girdles, and bras. Along with later improvements in their latex garment line, they added the word “play” to the brand name, and introduced us to Playtex. • Playtex was very forward with their advertising campaigns in the 1940s and used what could then be called breakthrough methods for creating a brand image. In an era when underwear was displayed primarily through discreet line drawings in print publications, Playtex placed a full page color ad in LIFE Magazine showing several photos of models wearing Playtex undies along with a mail-in coupon. LIFE boasted that some 200,000 sales were generated because of that ad alone.

6 Tips for Better Grilled Chicken
* On Aug. 8, 1988, the Chicago Cubs host the first night game in the history of Wrigley Field. The first-ever night game in professional baseball took place nearly 60 years earlier in Des Moines, Iowa.
* Grease your grill: Chances are you won’t have a sticking problem if your chicken has skin, or if it’s marinated or rubbed with some oil. But play it safe. Before you light the grill, spray the rack with nonstick cooking spray or brush it with oil.
* On Aug. 5, 2002, the rusty iron gun turret of the ironclad warship U.S.S. Monitor was raised from the floor of the Atlantic, where it had rested since it went down in a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, during the Civil War. She sank in December 1862, while being towed from Cape Hatteras.
* Close the top: If your grill has a cover, always cook your chicken with the cover down. It will make your grill more ovenlike, and your food will cook more evenly. Also, because the cover cuts off some of the oxygen, you’ll have fewer flare-ups.
(c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
* Be patient: Resist the urge to continuously move the chicken around while it cooks. The chicken will cook more evenly (and more quickly!) if you follow the recipe cooking instructions or turn it over only once, midway through grilling. * Use the right utensil: Use long-handled tongs or a wide metal spatula to move the chicken. Poking it with a fork will cause precious juices to escape. * Test for Doneness: Don’t risk serving undercooked chicken. When in doubt, make a small cut into the thickest part so you can be positive that it’s no longer pink inside. You also can use a meat thermometer to check if your meat has reached a safe internal temperature: 180 F for whole chicken

Beware of New Utility Scams
When a pair of young girls came to my door, both wearing plastic badges on chains around their necks, I knew they were there to try selling me something. When I opened the door, one of them launched into a memorized speech. She specifically stated that they represented our local electric company and that they were doing energy audits on residential homes in my neighborhood to be sure we’re all getting the lowest rate that we qualify for. But to do that, she said, she’d first need to see my latest electric bill to see if I was getting all the discounts I deserved. I said “no thanks” and shut the door. ANSWER: It sounds to me that despite your good exercise regimen, you may have weakness specifically in your thighs -- what we call “proximal muscle weakness.” There is a very long list of medical illnesses that affect these muscles specifically (my textbook lists 28 different diagnoses), including common conditions such as low thyroid levels and vitamin D deficiency. I would recommend a visit to your doctor for a careful exam of your nerves and muscles to see if my suspicion is correct. Your doctor may suggest a trial of vitamin D. If no medical cause is found, I would work specifically on strengthening the hip muscles, which extend the thighs. A trainer at the gym can show you those exercises. ***

The set includes large and small soup tureens with lids, six plates, six saucers, five teacups, one round and one oval ser ving platter, a teapot with a lid, a sugar bowl with a lid and a cream pitcher. The set is decorated with yellow and pink flowers and blue stripes on the edges. The Ben Hecht family gave the set to my mother when she was a child. He was a well-known screenwriter, novelist, journalist and playwright. Would you be able to tell me anything about the set and the value?
sets are always popular with collectors. Your set was made around 1940 and would probably be worth $150 to $175. *** Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Tressesmanes and Vogt of Limoges, France, made this porcelain salt and pepper set.
A:
Tressemanes & Vogt Porcelain Factory made your set. They have been in business in Limoges, France, since 1883. Based on the information that the designs are not the same on the shakers and the plate, you do not have a matching set. The initials are those of the artist. Your shakers and plate were made between 1892 and 1917. The three pieces would probably be worth $225 to $275. * * *

Golf (from page page 3) courses in the early 1970s, she was, according to regulations, too young to play on the women’s pro tour. So her agent took her to Japan, which had no minimum age requirement. The golfhappy Japanese were smitten by the curvaceous young blonde American prodigy and she quickly became a popular icon. Soon there were Laura Baugh calendars, photo albums, cosmetics, school supplies, English-language cassettes, sports clothing, and gold accessories that became all the rage in Japan. She became the highest paid female American golfer, even though she had never once played in an American tournament. • Although Tiger Woods was only eight when he shot his first hole-in-one, it was five-year-old Coby Orr who was the youngest golfer to claim that honor. He accomplished that enviable feat in Littleton, Colorado in 1975. • Henrik Stenson made headlines by stripping down to his underwear when his ball went into a swampy area during the WGC Cadillac Championship in 2009. Wearing nothing but a glove, a hat and his jockey shorts, he managed to hit his ball out of the muck and made bogey. • Jack Nicklaus has won the Masters tournament a total of six times. • Someone asked Muhammed Ali how he was at golf. “I am the greatest!” he replied. “I just haven’t played yet!”
The Natural Laws of Golf Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe. When you look up, causing a bad shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.

Sweep Spot
Good driving requires a shallow angle of attack from a slight inside downswing path. You’ve maybe heard the term “sweep the ball” off the tee to create this approach. Yet, without a launch monitor by your side, how would you know if you’ve accomplished those goals? Time to look at your tee. Yes, that two inch piece of wood (or plastic) will tell you a lot about your swing approach: 1. Broken tees show either too steep a downswing or too low of a swing of the clubhead to the ground. If you’re hitting the ground while breaking the tees, you really need some help. 2. No tee movement usually indicates too high a swing above the ground or too inside a downswing approach. 3. The best sign of sweeping the ball of the tee is a tilted tee still in the ground, or one that pops up in the air, landing anywhere around you.
Try nicking the head of just the tee with many ADVERTISING PROOF practice swings to master the “sweep spot” with Finalyour Changes 5:00 driver. DUE:
