• With enough money to live comfortably, Olson was free to try his hand at other new inventions on his 45-acre Minnesota farm. He devised the LunarBed, a bed enclosed in a clear plastic globe designed for sleeping under the stars, and Rowbike, a bicycle that is rowed rather than peddled. A giant-outdoor version of ping pong known as Kong Pong was another invention birthed at the farm. One of his more unusual inventions was a plastic penguin lawn ornament that waddles in the wind.

During that same month, the streets of Manhattan were packed with paparazzi and sightseers alike. They were all hoping to catch a glimpse of the enormously popular Marilyn Monroe when principal filming of Some Like It Hot began. • Even though they’d been divorced for seven years, it was Joe DiMaggio who made the arrangements for Marilyn Monroe’s funeral, held on August 8, 1962. The grief-stricken Yankee Clipper murmered “I love you” as he kissed Monroe’s lips one last time before the casket was closed. The rest of the country was concerned about a possible recession, and president John F. Kennedy announced that the major personal and corporate tax cuts would take effect the following year. • Congress passed the Food Stamp Act in August 1964 as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” policies. The program was designed to provide vital nutrition to folks in poverty-stricken areas where babies with low birth weight and anemia were a common problem. At the same time in Hollywood, Grauman’s Chinese Theater hosted an elaborate premier spectacle for the Disney musical Mary Poppins.

After a series of auditions, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz were chosen to star in a new NBC TV series (and also record albums for the Colgems record label). In the sports world, prizefighter Cassius Clay petitioned the government for a draft deferment on religious grounds. Everyday CHEAPSKATE

by Mary Hunt By Samantha Weaver

* The average resident of North America consumes about 600 sodas every year. * Another good reason to recycle: The energy saved by recycling one glass jar is enough to watch TV for three hours. * There are many laws that have been passed during our nation’s history that make you think that some of our legislators have a bit too much time on their hands. For example, in Alaska it is illegal to look at a moose from an airplane; an Illinois law states that a car must be driven with the steering wheel; in West Virginia, you can be imprisoned for cooking sauerkraut or cabbage, due to the offensive odor; and a California law of 1925 made it illegal to wiggle while dancing. * The same man who discovered the planet Uranus also invented contact lenses. * A giraffe can use its tongue to clean its ears -- not too difficult a task, I suppose, if your tongue is 21 inches long. * Everyone has seen bonsai -- those tiny trees that are pruned into aesthetically pleasing shapes. Many people don’t realize, though, that even trees that grow to be giants of the plant world, such as redwoods and giant sequoias, can be used to create these miniatures. * The United States once issued a bill of currency that was worth 5 cents. * The name of the popular Japanese dish teriyaki literally means “shiny and broiled.” * There is only one bird that can swim but not fly: the penguin, of course. *** Thought for the Day: “A man has made great progress in cunning when he does not seem too clever to others.” -- La Bruyere (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to Clean Steam Irons and Granite Countertops -Cheap and Easy! These days, there’s a pricey product available to clean just about anything. But why spend the money when you can make® your own homemade products that perform just as well, from ingredients youbymay Maryalready Hunt have in your cupboards and pantry? I’m talking cheaper, faster and, quite possibly, better!

Applying a paste made of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda then vigorously scrubbing the surface with a rag will do the trick, but you’ll be left with a wet soggy mess and steam holes that are hopelessly clogged with the paste. I’ve been there, done that and found it to be very frustrating. My favorite way to clean the bottom of the iron is with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (or the generic melamine version, which is cheaper in bulk). Make sure the Magic Eraser is wet; then rub the soleplate until it comes clean. No mess, no residue and no clogged steam holes. It really is like magic. * * * Dear Mary: What is the best way to clean hard-water stains from my granite countertops, especially around the sink? -- Sheila

• The Pony Express Company was the idea of three owners of a freight business, who proposed a faster method of transporting mail between St. Joseph and the California Gold Country, a journey of roughly 1,800 miles. Although critics said it was impossible, William Russell, William Waddell, and Alexander Majors claimed that the mail could be moved across the distance in just 10 days. •

The men acquired more than 400 horses for their operation and set up a series of 157 relay stations along the route about 10 to 15 miles apart. This was the distance that a horse could gallop at top speed before tiring. Riders changed to a fresh horse at each relay station. Home stations were also constructed about 90 to 120 miles apart, where the riders were switched out and allowed to rest.

Bran indeed will be back, with Isaac Hempstead Wright reprising his role of the paralyzed vision-seer. He was benched this past season to give the TV series a chance to catch up with where his character is in the book series, and also to give his character time to develop his warg skills with the Three-Eyed Raven. Isaac revealed to the Irish Examiner: “I can’t say a lot, but I am back this [next] season, and it’s going to get particularly interesting with Bran. Slash Your Risk of Heart Attack A long-term study out of Tufts University has pinpointed five steps we can take to cut our risk of heart attack in half. And those steps aren’t even hard. This 20-year study followed 4,500 men and women age 65 and older. The participants had a yearly exam and answered questions about their leisure activities, intensity of exercise, alcohol and smoking, their diet and weight. The five heart-savings steps are all about lifestyle: 1. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous. All it takes is brisk walking, at a pace of 2 mph or faster. 2. That’s not to say we can be couch potatoes the rest of the time. The study found that we need to stay moderately active for about 30 minutes per day in leisure activities that burn calories. These can be outdoor activities, such as yard work, or even indoors -- yes, doing housework counts! The American Heart Association cites doubles tennis, ballroom dancing, riding a bike slower than 10 mph and gardening as examples of moderate-intensity leisure activities. 3. Don’t smoke. This one is key. 4. Drink moderately, limiting alcohol to one or two drinks a day. 5. Watch your weight and avoid obesity. Oddly enough, at least within the limits of this study, diet wasn’t tied to risk (except for a high salt intake, which raises blood pressure). And intense exercise wasn’t as crucial as the pace of moderate walking added to the other physical activities. According to the study, the best bet, is to do at least four of the above steps if you want to cut your risk of heart failure in half. One or two won’t cut it.

What Is COPD? DEAR DR. ROACH: Please help me to understand what COPD means. -- S. ANSWER: “COPD” stands for “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.” “Chronic” means that it is long-lasting, and “obstructive” means the airflow in and out of the lungs is decreased. The three subtypes of COPD are chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive asthma. These conditions usually are progressive. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Chronic bronchitis is a chronic productive cough (specifically, lasting three months or more in two successive years). Smoking is again the leading cause of emphysema, but a genetic condition, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, can bring about both emphysema and liver disease. People with this uncommon disorder sometimes mistakenly are assumed to be smokers. Asthma is a common condition that is highly variable from person to person. Most people have reversible obstruction to the air-

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Full Retirement Age Q:

You continually refer to people getting full benefits at age 66. But you should know that for lots of readers of your column, our full retirement age is greater than age 66. For example, I will have to be 66 and 6 months to get my full benefits. Can you please keep this in mind as you write future columns?

A:

I have been dreading getting an email like this for years now. Well, maybe “dreading” is too strong a word. But I sure haven’t been looking forward to this. Explaining complex Social Security rules can be enough of a challenge. Throwing in this little monkey wrench of an issue -- the increasing retirement age -- is just going to make my life a little more difficult. “Back in the day,” as they say, back when I was just a young pup in the early years of my Social Security career, life was pretty simple. The retirement age was the same for everyone -- 65. You could take benefits as early as age 62, or anywhere in between. But still, there was only one “full retirement age.” That all changed in the early 1980s. Adopting recommendations that grew out of the National Commission on Social Security Reform, Congress raised the retirement age to 67. But to ease the transition to the new law, they did it in gradual steps. The first people impacted by the law were those born in 1938. They had to be 65 and 2 months to get full benefits. People born in 1939 had to be 65 and 4 months. Full retirement age kept going up in 2-month increments until we reached folks born in 1943. Their full retirement age was set at 66. And FRA leveled off at that age for the next 12 years. In other words, anyone born from 1943 through 1954 must be 66 to get full benefits. So for this past decade or so, as least with respect to this issue for most of my readers, my life has

Page 13

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

been relatively easy. I’ve been able to refer simply to age 66, rather than the more awkward term, “full retirement age,” or the unfamiliar acronym “FRA,” when discussing the topic. But for people born in 1955 and later, the retirement age starts to climb again. People born in 1955 must be 66 and two months to claim full benefits. Those born in 1956 must be 66 and 4 months. And once again, it keeps going up in two-month increments until we reach folks born in 1960 and later. They must be 67 before they reach FRA. And Congress did not change the early retirement age. It is still 62, no matter what age you must be to get full benefits. Those folks born in 1955 will be turning 62 in just a couple years and they are starting to get really interested in Social Security and they are starting to pay particular attention to this column. So pretty soon, I’m going to have stop simply referring to age 66 and I’m going to have to use “full retirement age” when discussing the issue of claiming full Social Security benefits. I’m not looking forward to that, partly because it makes for more stilted language, and partly because, frankly, lots of folks don’t know their full retirement age. I envision lots of scenarios where I will write, for example, “When you reach full retirement age, you can do xyz...” And people will come back to me and say, “What’s full retirement age?” Finally, there is a different set of retirement age rules for survivor benefits -- in other words, for widows and widowers. But that will have to be the topic for another column.

dollars you earn over $15,720. But it gets way more complicated than that.) It’s also a mess for the Social Security agency to administer. People are constantly being overpaid or underpaid because of these archaic rules. They are a holdover from the earliest days of the program when it was felt you had to retire to get “retirement” benefits. But a long time ago, they eliminated the penalty once you reached full retirement age. So why not eliminate the penalty altogether? Actually, I can answer my own question. Costs. The Social Security system would pay out billions more dollars in benefits each year if the earnings penalty were eliminated. For a system already strapped for long-range cash due to the ticking time bomb of retiring baby boomers, Congress isn’t exactly looking for ways to increase Social Security expenditures. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. I think you can bet the farm that when Congress finally does get around to enacting Social Security reforms, one of the changes will be an increase in the retirement age. But I think you can also rest assured those changes won’t impact you. This mark is on the back of an ironstone platter that I have. I found the platter in the attic of a house I owned 30 years ago. It is decorated with a floral border against a white background. This is a photo of a glass-covered casserole dish that I have. It is yellow with a clear glass lid that is decorated with a sunburst design. The center is orange and the rays are bright yellow. On the bottom are the words “Pyrex -- 473 -- 1 Quart.” It was a wedding gift 55 years ago and is in perfect condition. It was originally a set of three dishes of var ying sizes but they disappeared over time. I still use my dish and wonder if it has any value.

1886. The letters “LTD” were added to their mark around 1925. Grindley and Co. passed through several owners and was taken back by Grindley and Co. in 1988. They went into receivership in 1991 and then were taken over by Woodlands Pottery. Some of the pattern books and records from 1880 to 1930 have been preserved in the Stoke-on-Trent city archives. Your circa-1930 piece and would probably be worth $20 to $30.

Your Pyrex casserole dish was made Corning Works Co. It is part of their “Cinderella” line of glass dishes. Corning Works Co. is located in Corning, New York. CorningWare was incorporated in 1915 and the “Pyrex” mark was first used in 1915. The “Cinderella” line was introduced in the late 1950s. The line featured handles that were shaped like spouts to facilitate pouring and was decorated with a variety of designs. The “473” number identifies the quart-size dish. It was accompanied by a 1 1/2 quart dish and a 2 1/2 quart dish. The pattern is “Sunburst” and sometimes called “Daisy.” The name “Cinderella” was chosen due to the re-release of the Disney movie in 1957. Baby boomers motivated by memories of Pyrex cas-

August Happenings (from page page 3) McGwire became the first player to hit 30-plus home runs in each of his first four seasons. • The weekend of August 12, 1994, proved that you can never go home again. Woodstock ‘94 was an attempt to re-create the peace and love vibe of the original 1969 concert, but organizers quickly learned that the sixties were over and done with. Woodstock ‘94 was sponsored by an official ice cream (Häagen Dazs) and an official bottled water (Vermont). Performers eschewed the tents and overflowing porta-potties for comfy rooms at nearby luxury hotels. And when thunderstorms turned the venue into a soppy mud field, instead of reveling in it as was done in 1969, the audience scooped it up and threw it at the performers on the stage. • The world was shocked and saddened on August 31, 1997, with the news that Britain’s Princess Diana died at age 36 from injuries suffered in a high-speed car crash in a tunnel in Paris, while reportedly being pursued by photoseeking paparazzi. Also killed in the crash was her companion, Dodi Fayed, and the chauffeur, Henri Paul. Included in the media frenzi that followed was the overriding question of how the accident happened, and the exact details of the incident remain a mystery today. • The New Year was five months away, but by August 1999, panic had already ensued regarding what dreadful effects Y2K would have on electronic systems around the world. President Bill Clinton formed the Year 2000 Conversion Council to ease the transistion. But the fear of a cyber meltdown generated by the alarmists and doomsayers was all for nought as we entered the new millenium seamlessly without the predicted global hiccup. 

One of the easiest places to develop awareness of clubface control is in the takeaway. You may have seen dozens of players stopping their takeaway waist high, looking for some secretive orientation known only to the golfing gurus of the lands. Since most golfers are looking for an easy answer at this step or stage of the swing, let’s just say when the clubshaft is parallel to the ground in the takeaway the clubface is tilted in an angle similar to the spine. The leading edge should not be vertical nor horizontal at this point, but slightly down tilted like our posture’s angle.
