• Who hasn’t sung along to the jingle “Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat”? The first commercial featuring the clang of a cable car aired in 1959, launching the success of the small Golden Grain FREE Macaroni Company. The product was based on the family recipe of the founders, the Domenico’s. There were not many packaged side dishes available in the late 1950s and Rice-A-Roni was an immediate hit. It became so successful that when Golden Grain sold out to the Quaker Oats Company in 1986, the price tag was $275 million.

by Mary Hunt By Samantha Weaver
* It was 20th-century Hungarian author and psychiatrist Thomas Szasz who made the following sage observation: “The greatest analgesic, soporific, stimulant, tranquilizer, narcotic, and to some extent even antibiotic -- in short, the closest thing to a genuine panacea known to medical science -- is work.” * The story that’s been adapted to film more than any other is the fairy tale “Cinderella.” * While it’s true that paying to use transportation routes is nothing new, you might be surprised to learn the extent of some early pay-for-travel routes. In England in the early 1800s, there already were 30,000 miles of toll roads -- not to mention 8,000 toll gates. * During World War II, money was smuggled into German POW camps using Monopoly games -- the real stuff was stashed in among the fake cash. * Twerking may be a modern phenomenon, but in the 16th century, it was not unusual for a gentleman to be caught twirking (with an “i,” not an “e”) in public. Of course, twirling the hairs of one’s mustache generally didn’t raise an eyebrow in polite society. * If you see a group of ducks in the water, you can call them, collectively, a “paddling” of ducks. In the air, however, the correct collective term is a “team.” * Before he became famous in his eponymous sitcom, Jerry Seinfeld appeared on the TV show “Benson” -- he played the governor’s speechwriter. He didn’t last long, though; he was fired after just three episodes. *** Thought for the Day: “By the age of 6 the average child will have completed the basic American education. ... From television, the child will have learned how to pick a lock, commit a fairly elaborate bank holdup, prevent wetness all day long, get the laundry twice as white, and kill people with a variety of sophisticated armaments.” -- Russell Baker

RECYCLED CONTACT LENS CASE. Ever since hearing about the tip to cut open a tube of lotion to get to the last bit of product, I’ve been amazed at how much I’d been wasting all these years. (I’ve even started to wrestle open pump bottles with a pair of pliers to get every last drop of that expensive eye cream.) But how do I store that remaining lotion to avoid it drying out? As a contact wearer, I have many extra contact cases and realized they make perfect storage containers for those last lotion bits. An added bonus: These containers are perfect for travel. I write the contents on the lid and take my pomade, hair gel, eye cream, etc. without the bulk. -- Kate

more classic ad slogans
• “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t” was the jingle originated in the 1970s by Peter Paul to advertise its chocolate and coconut candy bars Mounds and Almond Joy. The original slogan of Mounds, a confection created in 1920, was “indescribably delicious.” It was the result of a contest that challenged entrants to come up with the best two words to sell a candy. The winner took home $10. Almond Joy (for when you feel like a nut!) came along in 1946. • How long have we been in good hands with Allstate? The company was founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck, & Company, but the familiar slogan didn’t come along until 1956. A company sales executive came up with the idea based on his comforting words to his wife when a doctor was caring for their child. It’s now ranked as one of the most recognizable slogans in America. • Nothing outlasts the Energizer. It keeps going, and going…” The pink bunny in the sunglasses and sandals beating on his bass drum has proven the effectiveness of this slogan time and time again. Appearing in commercials since 1989, the term “Energizer Bunny” has become part of our vocabulary referring to anything or anyone that continues endlessly. • Plenty of exhausted young mothers have uttered the phrase, “Calgon, take me away” since that catchphrase was introduced in the 1970s. A quiet, relaxing bath in Calgon bath products was the solution to the stress of everyday life. The product takes its name from “calcium gone,” referring to its ability to prevent the formation of unwanted elements in the water. • In Tell 1910, them 18-year-old you J.C. • One of the longest-running, most familiar ad slogans is Campbell’s “Mmm, mmm, good!”, which has been in use since 1935. Fruit merchant Joseph Campbell and icebox manufacturer Abraham Anderson teamed up in Camden, New Jersey, in 1869 to produce canned vegetables and jellies. The invention of condensed soup in 1897 by the nephew of the company’s general manager cemented Campbell’s place in history. The company began using the image of the round-faced Campbell kids in 1904 on the side of trolley cars.

In order, your answers are: yes, Showtime, hopefully sometime next year, and yes. Showtime’s head honcho David Nevins spilled the beans recently about the reboot, and one of those beans is that David Lynch will be there to direct season three, which will have at least nine episodes, with some sources reporting as many as 18 episodes. Nevins revealed at the Television Critics Association panel this summer: “I never had any doubts we were going to get [David Lynch] back. This was a huge priority project to me. It became clear that it was going to take more than nine episodes, which was the originally planned for and budgeted length of the series. I really wanted to get David to direct the whole thing, and he wanted to direct the whole thing. We just had to work out the details.” He also teased about whether former series stars will be back (as you’ll recall, the series starred Kyle MacLachlan, Lara Flynn Boyle, Richard Beymer, Sherilyn Fenn and Madchen Amick, and featured a young David Duchovny): Kyle MacLachlan “You should be optimistic that the people that you want will be there, and there will be some surprises in addition. I’m hoping we make 2016. It’s not clear. It’s ultimately going to be in their control. They’re going to shoot the whole thing and then they’ll start posting ... but I’m hoping sooner rather than later.” *** Can you give me any “Arrow” news? -- Kylie F., Baltimore

Depression Isn’t a Part of Aging While we have to tolerate certain changes while aging, depression isn’t one of them. Symptoms can be any of the following: sleeping too little or too much, no interest in favorite activities, inability to concentrate, and feeling hopeless, anxious or very tired. Depression might be part of a serious illness such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease or heart disease, and therefore might not be initially recognized. The key fact to remember is that a person who has depression won’t just snap out of it. Help is needed, and a trip to the doctor is the first step. A physician can prescribe antidepressants, which generally work well. (If you’re already on antidepressants and have side effects, don’t give up. They can fade over time, but do tell your doctor about them.) If the first type doesn’t work, there are others your doctor can prescribe until he finds one that works and at the right dose. A doctor also might suggest psychotherapy, which can help by identifying situations that might have made the depression worse, or even be the cause. If you had depression in your youth, recognize that the impact of depression on seniors is not the same. It can take longer to treat now because seniors are typically given a small dose as a starting point. If you suffer from depression, don’t just rely on treatment to make you better. Take steps

Please advise.” The obvious fact: Scooter is an aggressive dog who requires professional training. His unpredictable nature makes him a danger to others. Here’s where the facts don’t add up: Scooter doesn’t adore humans, at least not consistently. He is mistrustful of their intentions; he is fearful; he is overly territorial. Indeed, he will bite the hand that feeds him. Further, Scooter has not responded well to their training. And it’s hard to blame him. Lying on top of a dog is an act of dominance, not training. Personally, I consider it animal abuse. But whatever you call it, it isn’t helping, and Scooter isn’t responding. He’s biting people. Scooter has a serious problem with aggression. I would never advise a dog owner to attempt to tackle a problem like this without hands-on professional guidance. This isn’t something that can be cured in a letter. Someone (else) could get hurt. If you’re a veteran with an illness that you believe was caused by the drinking water at Camp Lejeune, you have until Sept. 24, 2016, to establish yourself as a Camp Lejeune Veteran and be eligible to claim out-of-pocket reimbursement of costs going back to Aug. 6, 2012. After a long, drawn-out process, the DeKeynote Speaker: partment of Veterans Affairs is finally looking into the possibility of establishing some presumptives for Camp Lejeune service. How’s that for being MS & RDN definite? After all, the water was contaminated from the 1950s to the 1980s. And yes, the VA will treat veterans with any of a list of 15 illnesses caused by drinking water at Camp Lejeune laced with fuel and dry cleaning chemicals. That’s the result of the Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012, but it doesn’t include disWORKSHOP ability. SENIOR MATTERS
At the press of a button, your loved one could call and talk to a trained operator through the system’s base station receiver, which works like a powerful speakerphone. The operator will find out what’s wrong, and will notify family members, a neighbor, friend or emergency services as needed. But these devices are limited because they only work in and around the house. If you’re away from home and need help, you’re out of luck. But today, there are numerous mobile products that work anywhere. Here are some top options. High-End Device If you’re interested in getting your mom a comprehensive, high-end medical alert device that works everywhere, consider the Philips Lifeline GoSafe system. It provides a necklace pendent button, which works like a two-way communication device, allowing your mom to speak and listen directly through the pedant. If your mom were to fall or need help at home, she could press the button and the home-base communicator system would be activated to make the call to the response center, who would then dispatch help as needed. But if she fell or needed help away from home, the system’s AT&T wireless network would kick in and place the call.

For years, medical alert devices (also known as “personal emergency response systems” or PERS) have been popular home safety products for elderly seniors that live alone. These systems come with a wearable SOS pendent button – usually a necklace or wristband – and a base station that connects to the home phone line.
This system also has six sophisticated locating technologies so the response center would know your mom’s exact location, even where GPS signals are weak. And it has fall detection sensors built into the pendent that can automatically summon help if a fall is detected and your mom is unable to push the button. The GoSafe is available at lifelinesys.com (or 855-2767761) for $149, with monthly services fees that start at $55.

Sugar Alcohols Aren’t Sugars or Alcohol DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed as being prediabetic and told to watch my sugar intake. So I now read the nutrition facts on packages. However, I am confused about the listed sugars. Sometimes the label includes both “sugar” and “sugar alcohols.” For instance, a package can read “sugars 1 g” and “sugar alcohols 11 g.” Would my sugar intake be 1 g or 12 g? What is the difference, and what should I avoid/limit? -- B.D. ANSWER: First, congratulations on reading labels. There is a lot of good information to be found that can help you decide whether something is a healthy food for you. That being said, sugar alcohols are confusing. Sugar alcohols have nothing to do with the type of alcohol in beer, wine or spirits, and they aren’t sugars either. A sugar alcohol, such as sorbitol or xylitol, is an incompletely absorbed carbohydrate. Since they are incompletely absorbed, you get only some of the calories, and your blood sugar goes up less than if you had had the same amount of sweetness with regular sugar. A rough but reasonable rule of thumb is to count about half the grams of sugar alcohol as sugar, for the purposes

ROACH: I have been suffering Sept. 6, 2015 Vol. 11 - No. 37 All Rights Reserved for many years from miserable episodes of perineal pain related to my benign, enlarged prostate. Sundown Crest Dr. would appreciate any suggestions you have to La Quinta 92253 Gated offer. -- J.S.K.
ANSWER: I see a lot of people with benign enlargement of the prostate, and the most common symptoms are inability to empty the bladder easily and having to urinate frequently. Persistent pain would make me concerned that the prostate enlargement is not the cause, or not the only cause, of the pain. I would think carefully about a bladder stone, chronic inflammation of the prostate and interstitial cystitis as a short list. Chronic pelvic pain is a condition much more frequently encountered in women, and there are specialists in evaluating just that complex problem. Men can get chronic pelvic pain too, and I am concerned that it often is assumed to be due to the prostate, when there are many other possibilities. It’s time for you to be re-evaluated. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses treatments for enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
More About Social Security Maximizing Strategies As I’ve said many times before, there is no single Social Security topic I hear about more often than the current craze to maximize one’s Social Security benefits. Easily, 75 percent of the emails I get deal with this one issue alone. And this week, I received a couple emails that distressed me. They came from folks who have gone to their local Social Security offices demanding to initiate some Social Security maximizing strategy they claimed they have learned from my column. But the trouble is, they misunderstood something I wrote and are trying to do something they simply can’t do. Some have gone so far as to file appeals with Social Security alleging, “Tom Margenau said I can do this!” One Social Security official told me they refer to these as “frivolous Margenau cases.” I have written MANY past columns discussing these maximizing strategies. But obviously it’s time to trot out the explanations one more time. There are two basic strategies. One is called “file and suspend.” The other I’ve taken to calling “file and restrict.” But the more technical term the Social Security Administration would use is “restricting the scope of your application to spousal benefits.” To understand the strategies, you first need to grasp some basic program policies. The first policy says that any Social Security claim filed before full retirement age is an open, or unrestricted, application. In other words, if you file for Social Security before FRA, you must file for any and all benefits you are potentially due, both on your record and on a spouse’s account. This usually means that you can

Page 13
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
NOT file for reduced benefits on a spouse’s Social Security record and then later file for full benefits on your own record. Conversely, you can NOT file for reduced retirement benefits on your own record and later switch to full benefits on a spouse’s record -- unless your spouse is not yet getting Social Security at the time you apply for your own reduced retirement (By the way, this unrestricted application rule does NOT apply to benefits for widows and widowers.) The second basic Social Security policy says that if you wait until your full retirement age to file for benefits, the first policy explained in the prior paragraph goes out the window. In other words, at age 66, you can file for one benefit and later -- usually at age 70 -- switch to higher benefits. How you accomplish this almost always involves employing one of the aforementioned strategies: file and suspend or file and restrict. And that phrase “employ one of the ... strategies” is one key to understanding the main point of this column: you can use one or the other strategy. You can NOT use both. (Many of the aforementioned squabbles people have been having with their local Social Security office involve folks trying to employ both strategies.) The term “file and suspend” means that you file for benefits at age 66 and then immediately suspend your payments. You would do that for one of two reasons. The most common is when you have a spouse who is due little or no benefits on his or her own Social Security record. After you “file and suspend” (again, at age 66 or later), your spouse can then file on your account and get monthly benefits even though your own payments are in suspense. Then at 70, you would “unsuspend” your benefits and get a 32 percent bonus added to your full monthly retirement rate. If a spouse isn’t in the picture but you plan to wait until 70 to get the bonus, you can still file at age 66 and suspend your benefits. You would do that just in case something happens between age 66 and 70 and you decide to start your benefits before your 70th birthday. You would then have the choice of getting a pro-rated bonus added to your monthly checks, or claiming retroactive benefits to age 66 at the full retirement rate. Had you not “filed and suspended” at age 66, your only option would be to simply file for your benefits and have them begin effective with your filing date. You would not have the option of taking full retroactive benefits. The “file and restrict” strategy is used when you have a spouse already getting benefits. At age 66, (and again, waiting until age 66 is the key), you can file for benefits on your spouse’s record (that’s called “restricting the scope of your application”) and collect those benefits until age 70 when you would switch to 132 percent of your retirement rate. I apparently can’t repeat often enough that you can NOT employ both strategies. I will give a quick example. Tom is age 66. He wants to delay taking his own Social Security benefits until age 70. His wife, Becky, is 61 and plans to retire at age 62. She is potentially due a much smaller Social Security ben-
efit than her husband. Tom has two Social Security maximizing options. Option 1: He can “file and suspend” at age 66. Then when his wife turns 62, she can file for her own reduced benefits and claim any extra spousal benefits she is due on Tom’s record even while his benefits are in suspense. Option 2: He can do nothing at age 66, but wait a year until his wife is 62 years old. After Becky files for her own reduced retirement benefits, Tom can “file and restrict.” He would file for husband’s benefits on Becky’s record, getting an amount equal to one half of her age-66 rate (even though she took reduced retirement benefits). Then at age 70, he would file for his own retirement benefits and claim 132 percent of his own rate. And at that time, Becky could then file for wife’s benefits on Tom’s record to supplement her own reduced benefits. Tom will have to dig out a calculator and “run the numbers” to figure out which way to go. My educated guess is option two is the most lucrative. But to repeat one final time: he can NOT start out with option one and later switch to option two. To learn more about these strategies, send me an email asking for my fact sheet, “When to take your Social Security benefits.” I charge a small fee ($5) for the fact sheet, which I will explain when you send your email.

Ad Slogans (from page page 3) • Where did our favorite candy M&Ms get its name? The little chocolates with a candy shell were introduced by the Mars Company in 1941 as a treat that allowed soldiers to carry chocolate without it melting. The two “M”s stand for Forrest Mars, son of the Mars founder, and Bruce Murrie, who was the son of the Hershey Chocolate president, who owned a 20% share in the product. M&Ms famous “melts in your mouth, not in your hand” slogan was trademarked in 1954. • After decades of using “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking” to describe the durability of their watches, Timex replaced the phrase with one they felt updated their image. The 1950s phrase was updated in 2003 to “Timex. Life is ticking.” • Frito-Lay challenged our self-control when they released their advertising slogan for Lay’s potato chips of “Betcha can’t eat just one” in 1963. They were the first snack food manufacturer to release television commercials, using actor Bert Lahr of The Wizard of Oz fame as their spokesman. Herman Lay started up the company in 1932 selling potato chips out of the trunk of his car. He merged his venture with the Frito Company in 1961. • The name of Paul Marcarelli is probably not familiar, but it’s almost certain that his face is. Paul was the actor who traveled the country for Verizon Wireless beginning in 2002 asking, “Can you hear me now?” The campaign was a huge success because most people are familiar with having to move to a place with better cell phone reception. The first year Verizon ran the ad, their sales improved by 10%, and numbers grew by another 15% the following year. Verizon’s slogan today is “Never settle.”

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS
Pop the Short Ones Every once in a while all golfers go through a stretch of poor putting from inside four feet. These “knee knockers” sometimes become more of a mental hurdle than a challenge on mechanics or green reading. Rather than trying to stick to a rigid set of principles on your form, try experimenting with an old school type of “pop” stroke to change things up. Many golfers error with short backswings and long follow throughs on short putts, so try reversing the image with a shorter follow through. In fact, try hitting these short putts with roughly an eight inch backstroke (minimally) and then stop the follow through immediately upon impact.
There may be a tightening of the arms and hands to hold this follow through from going too far forward. You’ll be feeling like the stroke “pops” at the ball, rather than releasing through. One of the advantages of the pop stroke is that it reduces the putter face’s rotation through ADVERTISING PROOF impact, which causes the majority of missed short putts. Final Changes DUE: 5:00

Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly offered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.
