Is it possible that you or someone in your family worked for a company that had a pension plan and then terminated it because the company went bankrupt or was bought out by another company? Also to blame was the change in hat fashions due to the advent of the automobile. It’s hard to keep tall, poofy feathers looking classy and nice when entering and exiting the door of a car.

• In the late 1800s when ostrich feathers were all the rage on ladies’ hats, a man named Charles Sketchley arrived in America loaded with 22 ostriches in crates. He announced that he was going to set up an ostrich farm in America in order to avoid having to pay high import fees and shipping charges for his goods. He took on a partner and set up an ostrich ranch in California. They made almost as much income from charging visitors 50¢ each to view the birds as they did from selling feathers.

• But this caused problems. Tourists regularly tried to pull feathers off the birds, broke locks on their pens, tried to steal eggs, and frightened the birds with their dogs. Because ostriches are attracted to bright shiny objects, the curious birds caused legal problems by snatching jewelry, watches, chains, and stickpins from unsuspecting onlookers who would get too close to them. In frustration, the admission price was finally raised to $25 per person, which quickly ended the problem.

Retirement Benefit Calculation -- the Advanced Course

There are two kinds of people in the world.

Those who just want to know the time and those who want to take the clock apart to see how it works.

I’m sure most of us fall into the first category. I sure do. But of course, there are always those who need to disassemble that clock, examine it and then try to put it back together.

And when it comes to Social Security retirement benefits, there also are two kinds of people: those who just want to know what their benefit is going to be and those who want to know exactly how the government comes up with their retirement benefit calculation.

But as I think about it, there is probably a third category of Social Security retirement benefit calculators. It is those people who want a general idea of how their benefit will be figured. They just don’t need all the nitty-gritty details. I think most seniors fall into that category.

For years now, I’ve been providing a relatively simple explanation for those folks. In a nutshell, a Social Security retirement benefit is a percentage of your average monthly income using your highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings.

So, when you file for retirement benefits, the Social Security Administration will look at your earnings history and pull out your highest 35 years.

They don’t have to be consecutive. If you don’t have 35 years of earnings, the SSA must plug in an annual salary of “zero” for every year you did not work, until the 35-year base is reached.

Do some research: To research the nursing homes on your list, put a call into your long-term care ombudsman. This is a government official who investigates nursing home complaints and advocates for residents and their families. This person can tell you which nursing homes have had complaints or problems in the past. To find your local ombudsman, call your area aging agency (800-677-1116) or visit LTCombudsman.org.

You should also visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website (data.cms.gov), which provides updated data on U.S. nursing home reported COVID-19 cases and deaths.
