You’re Not the Don, and It’s Not Personal

The following is from a well-meaning but frustrated dog owner:

“Daisy is a 20-pound mutt, female, somewhere between 2 and 4 years old. We also have 6-year-old Labradoodle. We rescued Daisy from a reservoir near our house in December last year.

She was on her last leg and has recovered nicely except for one thing: She’s overprotective when anyone or any dog enters the house or yard. If she knows the person or dog, she’s fine once she recognizes them. Otherwise, we can’t settle her down.

“I was watching our neighbor’s dog today, and Daisy was lying next to me. She started growling, and as the neighbor’s dog came closer, Daisy’s growl escalated. I told her to relax, but she started to attack the other dog. I grabbed her -- making sure she knew it was me -- and she turned on me and bit me.

“I responded in anger and approached her with that mindset, which made her even more aggressive toward me. I grabbed Daisy and my pistol and headed toward the woods, but I was just venting. I could never hurt an animal. But I am concerned that Daisy’s aggression will get worse as she gets older. I don’t know whether it’s hereditary or abuse, but I need to help her if possible.”

For a minute there, I thought we were heading for an “Old Yeller” ending -- minus the fateful rabies outbreak as justification.

I called this guy to make sure he had talked himself down from the ledge.

I asked him, “Have you killed her?”

He told me no, she’s fine. “I was just so angry.”

Some people reading this will be ready to meet at the town square, tar and feathers in hand.

But the truth is, a lot of people get irrationally angry with their dogs when things don’t go their way.

Why are we getting so angry? Why is it the dog’s fault that we don’t understand their behavior?

I Don’t Get the Allure of Retroactive Benefits

I just don’t get people’s fascination with the idea of getting retroactive retirement benefits from Social Security. I can understand that, on the surface, the idea of getting a big retroactive check from the government might sound like a financial windfall. But when you think it through, or at least when I think it through, it just doesn’t make much sense.

Before I get to today’s questions, all of which deal with claiming retroactive benefits, I must make this general point about the issue. The law says you can claim up to six months’ worth of retroactive benefits, as long as it doesn’t involve the payment of any reduced Social Security benefits. Or to put that another way, no retroactive retirement benefits can be paid prior to your full retirement age. It’s a different story when it comes to disability benefits. But today, I’m sticking with the retirement program.

So anyway, readers are always asking me about the possibility of getting retroactive benefits.

A: Don’t bother. As I explained at the beginning of this column, retroactive benefits can only be paid if you file after your full retirement age. I bet your neighbor was over FRA. But at 64, you are under FRA, so you aren’t due any retroactive benefits.

Dear Looking: One of the best, yet underutilized perks of growing older in the United States is the many discounts that are available to older adults.

There are literally thousands of discounts on a wide variety of products and services including restaurants, grocery stores, travel and lodging, entertainment, retail and apparel, health and beauty, automotive services and much more.

These discounts – typically ranging between 5 and 25 percent off – can add up to save you hundreds of dollars every year.

Search Online

Because senior discounts frequently change and can vary depending on where you live and the time of the year, the internet is the easiest way to locate them.

Restaurants: Senior discounts are common at restaurants and fast-food establishments – like Applebee’s, Arby’s, Burger King, Chili’s, Denny’s and IHOP – ranging from free/discounted drinks, to discounts off your total order.

A good place for you to start is at TheSeniorList.com (click on the “Senior Discounts” tab), which provides a large list of discounts in categories, i.e., restaurant dining, grocery stores, retail stores, prescription medications, travel discounts and more.

Retailers: Many thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army, and certain retailers like TJ Maxx, Banana Republic, Kohl’s, Michaels, Ross and Walgreens stores offer a break to seniors on certain days of the week.

You can also search for discounts by provider. Go to a search engine like Google and DuckDuckGo and type in the business or organization you’re curious about, followed by “senior discount” or “senior discount tickets.”

If you use a smartphone, there are also apps you can use like the “Senior Discounts & Coupons” app (available on the App Store and Google Play), which categorizes discounts by age and type.

Join a Club

Another good avenue to senior discounts is through membership organizations like AARP, which offers its members age 50 and older a wide variety of discounts through affiliate businesses (see AARPdiscounts.com).

Grocery stores: Many locally owned grocery stores offer senior discount programs, as do some chains like BI-LO, Piggly-Wiggly, Fry’s Food Stores, New Seasons, Fred Meyer, and Hy-Vee, which offer discounts on certain days of the week, but they vary by location.

Travel: American, United and Southwest Airlines provide limited senior fares in the U.S. to passengers 65 and older, while British Airlines offers AARP members discounts of up to $200. Amtrak provides a 15 percent discount to travelers over 62. Most car rental companies give discounts to 50-plus customers or those who belong to organizations like AARP. Others like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity and Carnival cruise lines offer discount rates to cruisers 55 and over. And, most hotels offer senior discounts, usually ranging from 10 to 20 percent.

Entertainment: Most movie theaters, museums, golf courses, ski slopes and other public entertainment venues provide reduced admission to seniors over 60 or 65. And the National Park Service offers a lifetime senior pass for those 62 and older for $80 (see nps.gov/planyourvisit/ passes.htm).

Plain water, mushrooms and basil may also help, but the mix of fat and water found in milk is the most effective.
