• Your mother was right when she told you, “Cover your mouth!” Although a sneeze lasts just milliseconds, its spray reaches distances exceeding five feet. The largest droplets quickly sink because of their own weight, usually after about three feet, but the tinyest droplets can be carried by the air up to 26 feet! In fact, it’s been shown that buoyant air can keep the tiny droplets airborne long enough to reach a building’s overhead vents.

• You may have heard that your heart stops when you sneeze. Not so! However, the heart’s rhythm can change due to the change in pressure in the chest. A sneeze also momentarily alters your blood flow.

• Since your eyes are already closed when you’re asleep, one would think you would sneeze then.

However, due to the fact that the nerves that cause you to sneeze are also resting, you can’t sneeze as you slumber.

• Although some people manage to do so, you shouldn’t really try to hold in a sneeze. All kinds of negative things can result, including broken blood vessels in the eyes, damage to blood vessels in the brain, or ruptured eardrums.

Although those instances are relatively rare, why risk the chance? When you need to hold back a sneeze, sometimes pressing your upper lip under your nose can work, or forcing a deep heavy breath out of your nose. Even the simple act of briskly rubbing your nostrils can often stifle the sneeze mechanism.

Fences and Leashes Save Lives

For many of the same reasons you wouldn’t let your 3-year-old toddle off to daycare alone, it’s also a bad idea to let your pooch roam the streets off-leash. Cars, dognappers, Animal Control... Unless you live on a large plat in Montana, your pup will undoubtedly benefit from a leash or a fence when cavorting in the great outdoors.

“Off-leash” has become a common and questionable addition to the dog-owner’s vernacular.

Off-leash parks, off-leash trails, off-leash beaches, off-leash walks... Why do I find “off-leash” so offputting?

In short, it’s dangerous.

I once had a client express concern about a woman who frequently walked her dog in his neighborhood. This woman would drape the leash around her neck, and her dog would walk -- off-leash -- beside her.

The dog was a large mixed breed, and my client had a dachshund with a bad habit of barking at the big guys. The problem was that my client wasn’t convinced this woman had any control over her very powerful dog. According to him, she would frantically try to hook the leash to its collar when she saw other dogs or people approaching. Even after she got her dog “on-leash,” the big guy would pull and lurch, all but dragging her along in his dust -- a canine disaster waiting to happen.

Question: Where do these potential disasters play out most often?

Answer: Wherever dogs gather ... off-leash.

The best thing you can do for your pooch is be in control of his immediate environment. This means a leash or a fence when he isn’t inside.

Frankly, I don’t get the hype about off-leash.

I don’t know about your dog, but mine exhibit nothing short of joy when I bring out the leash. No fear, no hostility, no evidence of any long-harbored resentment at being consistently harnessed and shackled to me during most of our outdoor excursions. “Most” because there are exceptions.

Again, those fences.

A fenced backyard is a great place for an offleash romp. An unfenced or improperly fenced backyard, though?

People Who Don’t Want Social Security

When we are talking about Social Security benefits, almost everyone wants more, not less. You can probably find 10,000 articles on the Internet if you search “maximizing your Social Security.” But I’ll give you a thousand dollars if you can find one story headlined “minimizing your Social Security.”

Or consider this. Over the past 50 years, I think I’ve heard from about 50,000 people who told me they believe they are being cheated out of Social Security benefits or that they are just not getting enough money each month. Nobody has ever told me they think they are getting too mThe uch or that their Social Security benefits are too high.

Until now, that is. I’ve saved up some emails from people who aren’t exactly saying they get too much money, but who, for a variety of reasons, don’t want their Social Security checks.

Q: I was born and raised in France, and I am a French citizen. But I have lived and worked in the United States for the past 25 years. I am about to turn 62 and retire, and I plan to move back to the south of France where I have a villa near Nice. I was married to an American citizen. We have been divorced for a few years, but we are still ver y good friends. She is also 62. Because my family is wealthy, I really don’t need my American Social Security check. I would like to give my Social Security to my ex-wife. Can you tell me how I go about doing that?

A: That’s not how it works. You can’t give away your Social Security, although in a roundabout way, you can do something similar. And your wife may be eligible for spousal benefits on your account. Let me explain.

Because you have worked and paid into the U.S. Social Security system for a quarter century, you are due Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62. Even if you move back to France, you are still due the money. (You worked and earned it, after all.) And your Social Security checks can be sent to your bank account in France.

When you file for benefits, your ex-wife can file for spousal benefits on your record. (This is assuming she has not remarried, is not working and is not due higher benefits on her own Social Security record.)

At the beginning of this answer, I said you can’t give your Social Security to your ex-wife. And by that, I meant you can’t assign the benefits to be paid in her name. But once you start getting your monthly benefits, the money is yours to do with as you please. So if you want to send her money each month in the amount of your Social Security check, go ahead and do it. And by the way, your ex is one lucky woman!

Q: I am about to turn 66. I have worked and paid into Social Security for all of my adult life. But good fortune has shined on me, and I am independently wealthy. I simply don’t need my Social Security. I am single. I’ve never married. I really have no family other than some ver y distant cousins. I heard there is some procedure where I can have the pro-

ceeds of my Social Security check returned to the Social Security trust funds so that other people will get the benefits of my contributions. Do you know how that works?

With the little space I have left, let me switch courses a bit and discuss a tangential issue.

Several times in this column, I used the phrase - A: You can’t just have your Social Security “It’s your money, and you can do what you want benefits deposited into the Social Security trust with it” -- when referring to someone’s Social Secufunds. But there is a procedure that allows you to rity benefits.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My husband and I will both be retiring in two years and are interested in relocating to a warmer climate, but we but could use some help deciding where. What resources can you recommend for locating and researching good places to retire in the U.S.? -- Retiring at 65

Transportation: If you plan to travel much, or expect frequent visits from your kids or grandkids, convenient access to an airport or train station is a nice advantage.

You should also investigate alternative transportation options, since many retirees give up driving in their eighties. Visit RidesInSight.org, a free website that provides information about senior transportation options in local communities throughout the U.S.

Once you have narrowed your choices down to two or three, spend a couple weeks in each location at different times of the year so you can get a feel for the seasonal weather changes, and so you can carefully weigh the pros and cons of living there firsthand.

You may find that you like the area more as a vacation spot than as a year-round residence. It’s also a good idea to rent for a year before buying a home or making a commitment to a retirement community.

• Sleep deprivation has been attributed as the cause of the 1980 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, the Chernobyl nuclear accident, and the Challenger space shuttle disaster. It also accounts for one in six road fatalities.

• Naps can be divided into three categories: planned napping, which is just what it sounds like -- planning a nap before one gets sleepy; emergency napping, when a person is suddenly very tired and can’t continue an activity; and habitual napping, which takes place at the same time each day.

• While napping at work in the U.S. isn’t considered acceptable behavior, other countries encourage this practice. The Japanese have a name for napping at work, “inemur,” which translates “to be asleep while present.”

Some U.S. companies, about 16%, are now incorporating napping into the work day.

• Sleep researchers tell us to keep our naps to 20 to 30 minutes. Anything longer can interfere with nighttime sleep.

• Napping can result in improved health. A study of 24,000 people showed that those who napped twice a week reduced their risk of coronary heart disease by 12%. That percentage improved to 37% for those who napped three times a week.

Still another study showed that folks who take a one-hour nap are less impulsive and less frustrated in their daily lives. □
