• The human brain will triple in size in the first year of life, which is why early childhood development is so critical during this time.

It continues to grow until about the age of 18. After middle age, the brain decreases in physical size as time passes.

There is no evidence that a larger brain is any smarter than a smaller brain.

• In general, men’s brains are ten percent larger than women’s, even after taking into account larger body size. However, the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain linked to memory, is typically larger in women.

• The average human brain, at 3.3 pounds, is about 1/50th of total body weight.

• Human brain tissue is soft and squishy, with a consistency of gelatin or tofu.

ANIMAL BRAINS

• By comparison, a chimpanzee’s brain is about 1/150th of body weight, and the gorilla’s is 1/500th.

• Similarly, elephants can have brains as huge as 13 lbs. representing 1/1,000th its body weight, while a whale’s 19-lb. brain represents 1/10,000th of its body weight.

• Small birds have a larger brain-to-body ratio than man with the brain accounting for 1/12th of the body weight.

• Still, the human brain is the largest brain of all vertebrates relative to body size.

Recently, a man called me for advice about a problem that’s not uncommon. “The dog is causing a rift in my marriage,” he said.

He and his wife can’t have kids. She wanted a dog to fill that void. He went down to the local shelter and brought home a dog that looked a lot like their last dog. It didn’t take long for the couple to realize the similarities did not extend beyond the looks department.

The dog is phobic, unruly, unsocialized, fearful and completely without training. The husband now contends that they bit off more than they can chew with this beast. The wife’s response? You don’t understand the power of love.

Neither is quite right.

Love is powerful, but it’s not an education.

Its warm rays won’t radiate the ABC’s into your child’s brain. Nor will they weave a heart-shaped glossary of human terms like “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” “down” and “come” into your dog’s limited vocabulary.

But how do you know that you’ve taken on more than you can handle if you haven’t made even the most basic attempt at gaining control of a situation?

There are 2 main ways to get your Medicare coverage: Original Medicare (Part A & B), or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C).

Consider these 5 simple questions: 1) Do you want your Medicare coverage to include prescription drugs?

2) Do you want extra coverage to help pay the 20% of your medical bills that Original Medicare does not cover?

3) Do you want Medicare coverage for vision and/or dental?

4) Do you want the freedom to choose your doctors?

5) Do you travel a lot, or live in another state part of the year?

Original Medicare does NOT cover everything. Many people buy additional coverage like a Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) policy with a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). Medigap is extra health insurance from a private company to pay some (or all) of the 20% of your medical bills that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, OR you may prefer to get a Medicare Advantage plan that has a drug plan included AND help with your out-of-pocket costs.
