They are actually legumes, edible seed pods that grow underground. They are in the same family as soybeans, chickpeas, peas, clover, licorice, and lentils, but are unusual in that they flower above ground while their fruit grows underground.

• Peanuts are the number one snack nut consumed in the U.S., accounting for two-thirds of the snack nut market. The average American eats more than six pounds of peanuts and peanut butter products every year. About 94% of U.S. homes regularly consume peanuts.

• Peanuts contain approximately 80% unsaturated fat, which is considered the “good” fat, and they are are cholesterol-free. They contain more protein ounce for ounce than any tree nut.

• Peanut oil is considered a high-quality cooking oil in the U.S. because it is able to withstand higher cooking temperatures than many other oils and does not retain the flavor of foods cooked in it. Peanut oil accounts for 8% of the world’s edible oil production.

• The major peanut producing states are: Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Texas, and North and South Carolina. Georgia produces about half of all the peanuts grown in the U.S. • The bulk of the world’s peanut production comes mainly from China, India, Nigeria, U.S., Sudan, Burma, Argentina and Senegal.

• It takes fewer than five gallons of water to produce one ounce of peanuts. By comparison, it takes 80 gallons to produce one ounce of almonds.

Dear Randy: Remarkable! And a what a great idea to use WD-40 to clean those doors.

Although we need to make it clear that had the glass become permanently etched, it is not likely that WD-40 could have fixed the problem.

WD-40 is a great product. The blue and yellow can is about as familiar as anything.

Banished to a shelf in the garage, most people assume WD-40 is only an automotive thing.

Wrong! This stuff is amazing. And relatively cheap.

Most of us already know to use WD-40 to loosen bolts and fix squeaky door hinges. But there are many more ways -- quite possibly thousands -- that WD-40 can make our lives easier.

When it comes to a modeling career, looks are everything. When it comes to a dog, personality is everything.

Getting a dog is like getting married. You don’t date a dog -- get together once or twice a week for a few months until you decide to take it to the next level. You don’t break up with a dog, telling him it’s not him, it’s you. A dog is -- hopefully -- the only relationship where you invite your special friend back to your place on the first date, and he or she never leaves.

In light of the uniqueness of the relationship, it’s a good idea to know what you’re looking for and how to find it.

But we’re talking about dogs, right? How do you know what a dog’s personality is like before you even bring him home?

Believer it or not, it’s possible.

There are five simple tests virtually anyone can administer to get a pretty good feel for a dog’s personality. These tests measure a dog’s reaction to the following:

--your presence

--your voice

--the movement of your hand near his head and face

--the sound of foreign objects (e.g., car keys tossed to the ground)

--your touch (via the application of varying degrees of pressure to different parts of the body, including and especially sensitive parts of the body such as the paws, tail, back and hips, to determine pain tolerance.)

These are simple tests, but they reveal a lot.

A dog who reacts to your presence by jumping all over you is a very different dog from the one who saunters up to you in his own good time. A dog who shies away or ducks as your hand approaches his face requires a different approach from a dog who views the presence of your hand as a game. A dog with a low tolerance for pain warrants more careful and sensitive play and handling than a dog with very high pain tolerance.

The Cookie Connection Because October is National Cookie Month we thought you might enjoy a little quiz about a couple of these popular confections. Follow along and test your knowledge.

SWEET DISCOVERY

• In 1930 Ruth Wakefield and her husband bought an inn in Massachusetts which had historically been a place where travelers would have to stop and pay a fee to cross the bridge. Ruth did all the cooking for their guests, and one day she decided to make chocolate cookies. She was out of baking chocolate, but Andrew Nestlé (yes -- a Nestlé chocolate family member) had recently visited, and had given her one of his Nestlé’s chocolate candy bars.

• But rather than just eat it, she decided insead to try something different and cut it into bits and sprinkled them into the dough. She expected them to melt in the oven and blend into the cookies, but they didn’t. The bits of chocolate softened but remained separate. But the cookies were very good and the travelers raved about them.

She called them Chocolate Crunch Cookies, and their popularity led her to publish her recipe in several newspapers.

• Suddenly sales of Nestlé’s candy bars took a sharp climb, and Andrew Nestlé wanted to know why. When he learned of Ruth's published recipe he saw an opportunity and quickly struck a deal with her. He would print her recipe on the back of the candy bar’s wrapper, and name the cookies after her inn. He also provided her a lifetime supply of his chocolate for her invention.

• Nestlé's chocolate sales increased as the cookie's popularity spread nationwide, so he started manufacturing a scored bar to make it easier to break into bits. Then they started including a special chopper, until finally they introduced a new product in 1939: chocolate chips.

• Ruth later sold Nestlé the right to the name of her cookie recipe, and the company began to produce the cookies as well. This treat is now the most popular kind of cookie worldwide.

when they lost their life savings in a bank failure. O.D. took a job as a deliveryman for a local bakery in Tennessee, but his passion was to one day own his own shop.

• When a small failing bakery went up for sale in 1934, they used their car as collateral and bought it, living in the back of the store. Eventually they were able to afford a second shift of employees, and they spent the next several decades building their business.

• McKee discovered that baked products which were individually wrapped would keep longer and stay fresher than those that were bulk packaged in bags or jars. Determined to give his bakery products a longer shelf life, he bought a candy-wrapping machine and modified it to wrap and seal cookies, baked bars and cupcakes.

• His business grew to be quite successful, and in 1960 they created a new brand for their company, naming it after their four-year-old granddaughter. For the logo they used a picture

of the child wearing her favorite outfit, complete with a straw hat with a crease in the brim where she had stepped on it.

• The individually-wrapped cakes were now sold in multi-packs and the company began a period of prodigious growth.

• Meanwhile, their little granddaughter grew up to become the company’s director of marketing.

The company named after the grandchild gained tremendous popularity and now dominates the snack cake market.

• Because Harry bought all his chocolate wholesale from the Hershey company, he was considered a customer rather than competition.

Sales were brisk for Harry, but World War II caused a rationing of chocolate. Harry had to stop his chocolate production, but because peanut butter was still plentiful he concentrated instead on making candies containing this popular ingredient.

• In the 1940s and 1950s, a surge in popularity for his candy resulted in the need for a high volume production facility. His 100,000 square foot manufacturing plant opened on Chocolate Avenue in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1957. By the time he died, Harry’s candy business was a whopping national success. In fact, he was buried in the Hershey cemetery, just a few feet away from Milton Hershey’s grave.

• In 1963 Hershey bought out Harry’s company, named after Harry, for $23.5 million. This bestselling peanut butter candy still bears his name.
