• More than 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced annually in the U.S. The topproducing states are Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Morton, Illinois proudly holds the title of Pumpkin Capital of the World.”

Home to the Libby Corporation’s canning facility, the city processes 85% of America’s pumpkins. The University of Illinois tells us that 95% of the pumpkins grown in the U.S. come from that state.

VARIETIES AND USES

• What do Hooligan, Lumina, Iron Man, Cotton Candy, Cinderella, and Orange Smoothie have in common? They are all a different type of the 45 varieties of pumpkins. Those with a higher sugar content, such as the New England Cheddar, are best for desserts, while other lesssugary varieties, such as the Cinderella, named after the carriage of the fairy-tale princess, are used in savory recipes, such as those for other squashes. Generally speaking, the smaller the pumpkin, the better the flavor.

• Early artists’ impressions of the First Thanksgiving show the Pilgrims serving traditional pumpkin pie at their outdoor tables.

However, this representation isn't really accurate. According to records, the first pies were “gutted-out pumpkins, filled with milk, spices, and honey baked among a fire’s hot ashes.” The Native Americans of the area, in addition to snacking on long strips of pumpkin roasted on the open fire, would dry them out and weave them into mats to lay on their dirt floors.

Easy Homemade Soup to Soothe the Soul and Budget

Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to low. Allow to cook very gently, uncovered, until the squash is tender (15 minutes or so should do it). Check from time to time as you don’t want this to turn to mush.

Puree in a typical blender, or use an immersion blender right in the pot. Add salt and pepper, if any, to taste.

Stir in maple syrup.

Stir in the heavy cream, if using.

Done.

Serving suggestion: Serve with a dollop of sour cream and croutons. Serves 4.

The magic of Halloween lies in all the possibilities. Limited only by the depths of your own imagination, free to fulfill your darkest or most delightful fantasies, it is the one night of the year when you can be anyone or anything you want. But remember: Under all that fake blood and face paint is a dog owner with certain basic responsibilities, even -- or especially -- on the night of the wandering dead.

Decorations and electrical cords should also be secured in such a way that your dog can’t chew on them.

Jack-o’-lanterns -- with their jagged grins and candlelit smirks -- are fire hazards that are best kept out of the dog’s path. Wagging tails and burning candles can be disasterous.

If you are the keeper of an exciteable four-legged Houdini, exercise caution when opening the door to trick-or-treaters. A Woman’s Guide to Social Security

I’m going to start this column by shamelessly promoting my little Social Security guidebook called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart.”

You can get it for less than 10 bucks at Amazon. com and other booksellers. I am always referring readers who send me emails to that book because it will help them a whole lot more than a few lines I scribble into an emailed reply. And by far the most common section of the book that I refer people to is the chapter called “A Woman’s Guide to Social Security.” Most of what follows is an excerpt from that chapter.

Why does a woman need a special guide to Social Security? After all, almost all Social Security rules are asexual. For example, retirement benefits are figured the same way for men and women.

Spousal benefits are also gender-neutral. In other words, a woman can possibly qualify for benefits as a wife or widow in the same way that a man might qualify for benefits as a husband or widower.

But even though Social Security’s rules treat men and women equally, society and history have not treated men and women the same way.

Men tend to work for a longer period of time and have more years of earnings on their Social Security record -- in part because women bear more of the burden of child-rearing and spend more years out of the paid workforce. And statistically, men tend to earn more than women, so they have higher earnings on their Social Security record.

Those and other factors are why men usually end up with higher monthly Social Security retirement benefits than women. And because women have lower retirement benefits, that means they are more likely to qualify for supplemental benefits as a spouse on their husband’s or ex-husband’s Social Security record. And that is the primary reason for the special women’s guide in my book: to help women (and their husbands) understand the rules associated with eligibility for benefits as a wife, a divorced wife, a widow or a divorced widow.

Here are some basic rules about Social Security that every woman needs to understand.

YOUR OWN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT

If you have worked enough to qualify for your own Social Security benefit, you will usually be paid that benefit first. After paying your own benefit, the Social Security Administration will then look to your husband’s (or ex-husband’s) Social Security record to see if you qualify for any supplemental spousal benefits on that record.

MOST SOCIAL SECURITY APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN-ENDED

SSA has a rule that says an application for one Social Security benefit is automatically considered an application for all other Social Security benefits you are due. Here is an example of what that means. You cannot apply for benefits as a wife on your husband’s Social Security record at age 62, and then later switch to your own benefits at age 66. Your application for wife’s benefits is automatically considered an application for your own Social Security benefits -- and vice versa.

It was designed by artist Eric Ravilious. His travel series featured different types of travel. He also created other dinnerware sets and commemorative pieces. During World War II, he was designated as a war artist. In 1942 he failed to return from an airsea mission off the coast of Iceland. Because of war regulations, many of his designs were not produced until the 1950s.

Enclosed is a photo of a sewing machine that belonged to my great aunt. It was converted from a hand crank to electric around 1950. Marked on the machine are the words and the patent dates “The Singer Manufacturing Co. -- Patented Oct 7, 1879 -- July 6, 1880, Sept. 18, 1887 -- July 18, 1887.” It still works.

• Nutritionally, pumpkin is a wonder food. It’s 94% water, which makes it low in calories, less than 50 calories per cup. That one cup will provide 245% of the recommended daily requirement of Vitamin A, important for healthy vision, cell division, and the immune system. Pumpkin is also very high in betacarotene, an antioxidant that contributes to eye, skin, and cell health, as well as reducing the risk for certain cancers.

There are several movements in the very beginning of the golf swing that can be quite detrimental to the success of the rest of the swing. One of these deadly moves is when the head moves toward the target as a result of poor body movement or weight shift. As a matter of fact, no great player in the history of golf has ever moved their head toward the target in the takeaway.

The takeaway should be a culmination of club, arm, shoulder, and body movements away from the target. The head does not have to move more than a few inches, but it should never go against the grain of the club and arm movement.

To get a better awareness of your own takeaway, place something on the ground in front of you where it aligns with the shadow of your head (left ear preferred). Watch your shadow to see that you don’t move toward the target!
