Tsunamis (from page one) the end of the last Ice Age, when sea levels rose by about 425 feet inundating shorelines that hadn’t previously been underwater. These now-saturated areas are particularly prone to landslides and collapse.

• Submerged volcanoes release super-heated lava which causes the cold sea water to instantly erupt into steam and rise to the surface in an enormous heave. When the huge volcano on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa erupted in 1883, hundreds of millions of gallons of sea water suddenly rushed into the masive underwater magma chamber. The resulting explosion was so violent that the sound impact was heard some 2,000 miles away in Australia.

The tsunamis that immediately followed killed more than 36,000 people living on Krakatoa and surrounding islands. Significant other effects were also felt around the world in the days and weeks following, including high tides, rough seas, and seismic activities.

TSUNAMI ANATOMY

• Normal waves caused by surface winds rise, break, and retreat, followed by a succession of waves that are an average of 300 feet from crest to crest (called the wavelength). However, tsunami waves may be so large that it takes a full hour for the wave to finish washing by, with the next wave following up to 500 miles behind. It’s common for the first wave to be the smallest, with succeeding waves becoming progressively larger.

• The longer the wavelength distance, the faster the waves travel across the ocean. Normal waves move at about 55 mph, but the biggest tsunami waves can travel at speeds of up to 600 mph, which is faster than most airliners.

• Shorelines that lie on the edge of a long and shallow stretch of a continental shelf suffer far

less damage than shorelines that lie on the edge of a deep, steeply declining stretch of seafloor.

If the sea bottom rises slowly to shallow water, much of the energy of the wave is dissipated through gravity and friction. The island of Tahiti escapes the worst of tsunamis because of this fact. If the ocean floor rises steeply to shore, the inflowing rush of the seas are forced upwards into a towering wave.

• The deadly force of tsunamis is exacerbated with the absence of natural barriers such as coral reefs, mangrove swamps, coastal forests, and sand dunes, all of which serve to break up the force of the inrushing water.

How to Stretch Ground Beef to Make the High CostEveryday Easier to Swallow

There’s something about adding stuff to ground beef that grosses people out.

RICE

When browning ground beef for anything like tacos, chili or sloppy Joes, add 1 cup of cooked rice for every pound of meat, just after draining the grease. Your family will never know.

The rice (brown or white) takes the seasoning very well so that, visually, it looks like it is all ground beef.

POTATO

Add grated potato or dry potato flakes to hamburger meat for any Mexican dish like tacos or chili.

BULGUR WHEAT

Cook it first in water until soft according to label instructions. Then add to any recipe calling for ground beef and tomato sauce, reducing the amount of ground beef you use to accommodate the addition of the bulgur wheat. Shhh!

I’ve been known to go 50/50 cooked bulgur to ground beef. That means 1/2 pound ground beef where the recipe calls for 1 pound.

PUREED VEGETABLES

Roast them first, then puree in the food processor or blender. Add 1 cup per pound of ground beef.

FILLERS

Add 1/2 cup of precooked lentils, oatmeal, kasha, quinoa or beans to the raw ground beef. Now cook it just as you would if it were all ground beef.

STALE BREAD

Tear it up into little bits. Add an egg and spices to make meatballs and burgers.

TURKEY

Ground turkey is very lean and often lacking in flavor. And it’s dry. Mix 50/50 with ground beef for fabulous results.

If you and your family are not ready to turn vegetarian, nor are you prepared to pay a king’s ransom for a quality hamburger, you do have another option: Get creative. OK, maybe a little sneaky, too.

But first, let’s talk turkey -- I mean, ground beef. The really lean option of ground beef, 93/7, is not easy to prepare well. That’s because there’s not enough fat in it to turn out juicy, delicious fare. Super lean ground beef requires careful seasoning as well as careful cooking.

Let’s also say that you, like I, prefer organic, lean ground beef. Yesterday, I paid $6.49 per pound for the best quality at my supermarket, on sale. Yikes! But I didn’t really pay that.

My effective cost is more like $4.35 per pound. How? Please don’t tell a soul: I stretch it. I take the best quality ground beef and then “extend” it by at least one-third. So, whatever the price in the store, I mentally reduce it by 33% to get my effective cost.

Sounds horrible, I know. But it’s not. By mixing in something with the ground beef to make it go farther, I get results that are so much better than the beef alone. I’m always doctoring, seasoning and adding this or that depending on what I’m making.

Peruvian Fish Soup

Seafood takes top honors in this throw-itin-the-pot Peruvian Fish Soup. The classic South American flavors of onion, chile pepper and lime blend beautifully with a rich combination of scallops, squid, cod and potatoes.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 medium onion, chopped

1 serrano or jalapeno chile, seeded and finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed with press

1 teaspoon ground cumin

2 bottles (8 ounces each) clam juice

3. Meanwhile, cut 1 lime lengthwise in half. Cut 1 lime half in half again and remaining lime into 6 wedges to make 8 wedges in all; set aside.

4. Add cod and remaining lime half to saucepot; cover and cook 5 minutes. Add scallops and squid; cover and cook 1 minute.

5. Remove saucepot from heat. With tongs, remove lime half, squeezing juice into soup. Stir in chopped cilantro, and serve with reserved lime wedges. Makes about 11 1/4 cups.

Serves 8.

 Each serving: About 205 calories, 3g total fat, 113mg cholesterol, 520mg sodium, 18g carbohydrate, 2g dietary fiber, 26g protein.

1 1/2 pounds cod fillet, cut into 1-inch chunks

1/2 pound medium scallops, each cut horizontally in half

1/2 pound cleaned squid, bodies sliced crosswise into 1/4-inch-wide rings and tentacles cut into pieces if large

1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 bag (5- to 6-ounce) baby greens

1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves, chopped

1. From lemon, grate 1/4 teaspoon peel and squeeze 2 tablespoons juice. From lime, grate 1/4 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice. Set juices aside. In small bowl, combine peels, salt and pepper.

2. Place scallops on paper-towel-lined plate; pat dry. Sprinkle with citrus-peel mixture.

3. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat 2 teaspoons oil on medium 1 minute. Add scallops; cook 6 to 8 minutes or until opaque throughout, turning once. Remove from pan; cover.

4. To skillet, add 1 teaspoon oil and shallot; cook 3 minutes or until tender. Stir in Dijon mustard and citrus juices, scraping up browned bits; cook 1 minute. Toss sauce with greens; place on plates. Top with scallops and chopped parsley, and serve with whole wheat couscous (to make couscous, follow package directions).

Received recently from new parents: “We have a 7-month-old baby who is learning to crawl.

When she starts moving, our 10-year-old Ridgeback/Pit bull mix gets anxious and starts circling her. Every once in a while when she is moving, he will charge at her and nudge her with his nose.

Sometimes he will growl when he does that. Mind you, we do not let her crawl around without us there, and we push him away when we see him charging at her.

“He was OK with her until she started crawling. He follows us with her everywhere. Even when she is sleeping in her crib, he has to be in the room with her. He won’t leave her side. We feel that he is protecting her. When she is crawling, it is a different story.

“Barnie” has had a tough life. We rescued him at 2 years old, and we were told at the shelter that he was beaten as a puppy.

“As for the baby, it seems like he is protecting her until she gets on the ground. Should we be worried about him charging her? What does that mean? Is he scared or threatened by her? Any suggestions would be appreciated. ”

If you were on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you noticed a shark circling your boat, would you jump in the water? No. Would you feel scared or threatened? You bet.

An animal circling something is in predator mode, and whatever he is circling is potential prey.

It is no different when the parties involved are a dog and a baby.

Charging can be an aggressive action.

Growling is a clear and certain warning of escalating aggression. This couple has a tough decision to make. Their choices are:

-- Find a new home for the dog.

-- Find a new home for the baby.

-- Find a way to keep the two away from each other 100 percent of the time.

I’ve done my calculations for next year, and once again I shake my head. We’ve been notified already that I’ll have a rent increase.

Heating fuel is likely to go up 47%. We all know what has happened at the grocery store. Medicare Part B is sure to go up, maybe a $10 per month increase.

There is one worrying note, and we need to think about how it will play out for us individually. The question is: Will that increase move us into a higher tax bracket?

When Grandma Needs Help Managing Her Social Security Benefits

This is going to be a column about people who need help managing their Social Security affairs.

People frequently send me emails about this topic. A typical email might go something like this: “My 90-year-old grandmother has a hard time getting around and managing all of her affairs.

I had myself granted power of attorney so that I can help her do things. But when I recently called Social Security to change my grandma’s direct deposit address for her Social Security checks, they said my grandma had to do it herself. Don’t they understand what ‘power of attorney’ means?”

Believe me, SSA understands what that means. But what the folks who send these kinds of questions to me don’t understand is that “power of attorney” is essentially a meaningless designation for Social Security purposes. Let me explain.

Social Security rules have always been very strict about the privacy of someone’s records.

For example, there is no way I could get any Social Security information about any one of my readers from the Social Security Administration. And you couldn’t get any information about me. In fact, I couldn’t even get information about my wife. If I called SSA tomorrow and asked, “Can you tell me how much my wife is getting in monthly benefits?”

-- they would correctly tell me, “Sorry, sir; that information is private, and we can’t disclose it to you.”

Those privacy laws are behind SSA’s rules regarding trying to help your grandma (or anyone else for that matter) with their Social Security affairs. Having “power of attorney” over someone gives you absolutely no right to violate the law that says SSA has to keep our Social Security records private.

I can hear many of you saying: “But come on, Tom; this lady is just trying to help her grandma get her bank address changed.” And I understand that point. But you’ve got to understand that the law is very clear on this. As long as people are mentally capable of handling their own Social Security affairs, they have that right to the privacy of their records.

Those two words, “mentally capable,” are the keys to being able to help grandma with her Social Security affairs. Or to turn that around, if she is mentally incapable of handling her own business with Social Security, you, or some other close family member, can be appointed what SSA calls her “representative payee.”

When that happens, grandma’s Social Security checks will come in your name and be sent to her bank account, your account or some kind of joint account that you set up. And once you are named her representative payee, you can (and must) handle all her other Social Security affairs.

So, if grandma is just having a hard time getting around but she is still in a good mental state, then she (with whatever help you can give her) is going to have to take care of her own Social Security business. For example, with your help, she can call SSA at 800-772-1213 or go online at www.socialsecurity.gov to change her direct de-

When my mother-in-law passed away several years ago, she left me several sets of china. One is a set of small plates.

This mark is on the back of each piece. Each is decorated with a different scene of a castle and trees overlooking a lake. The pattern is red against a white background.

Just in case my daughter would someday be interested in this set, I would like to know their histor y, age and value.

Dinnerware Is a Bohemian Rhapsody Q:

This is a photo of a ser vice for six set of porcelain. It was given to my grandmother by her sister around 1929 and then passed along to me. The set includes ser ving platters, bowls, egg cups, a cream pitcher and a sugar bowl. Each dish is decorated with stylized large pink flowers and small blue ones and green leaves. The edges and handles are embellished with gold. Most pieces are marked with a lion inside a heart and the words “Bohemia -- Czecho-Slovakia.” A few of the small dishes are marked simply “Germany” and the cream pitcher includes the word “Donatello.”

Johnson Brothers made your set of plates in Staffordshire, England. Alfred, Henry, and Frederick Johnson founded their earthenware and ironstone factory in 1883. In 1968 the company became part of the Wedgwood Group.

“Castle on the Lake” is the name of your pattern.

Although the pattern was made in red, it was also available in blue, brown and multi-colors.

Your plates would probably be worth $20 to $30 each.

Bohemia Ceramic Works were in business from 1921 to 1945.

Your dinnerware was made by Bohemia Ceramic Works. They produced porcelain in Bohemia from 1921 to 1945. Actually, the mark represents a lion inside a scrolled letter “B.” They used the mark you provided from 1941 to 1945.

The country, Czecho-Slovakia, existed from 1918 to 1945. From 1939 to 1945 it was part of Nazi Germany. In 1993, it became two separate countries, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. “Donatello” is the name of the pattern. Because a few of the pieces are marked “Germany” your set may not be as old as 1929.

Controlling chips around the green can be a complicated matter for most golfers. What club do I use? How much swing length? Do I hinge my wrists or not? All are valid questions when deciding how to judge the distance needed to chip it close enough for a one putt.

A great standard for greenside chips that don’t require much air time to get on the green is the knee high stroke. Standard chipping set up has the feet close together, ball right sided, and the club and body leaning toward the target slightly.

The backstroke agenda is to bring the clubhead back to a knee high height using a firm arm and wrist backstroke. Too much wrist hinge and you’ll go waist high or higher. Too little motion doesn’t give you the height to have a slight downADVERTISING PROOF ward strike.
