• The Leap-the-Dips roller coaster was constructed in 1902 at Lakemont Park in Pennsylvania. With a maximum height of 48 feet and a top speed of 10 mph it wasn’t much of a thrill ride by today’s standards, but in 1902 it was brand new and a really big deal. It also goes down in the record books as the oldest freestanding roller coaster in the world. It closed down in 1985 but was rescued from demolition and fully restored.

In 1996 it was officially named as a National Landmark and it reopened for business in 1999.
