The water in the Epsom spring was found to be suffused with magnesium sulfate, and the town of Epsom soon became known as a spa town.

People began coming from great distances to soak in the healing waters. The magnesium sulfate was mined and sold until the supply ran out in the 1900s, and by this time Epsom salts were being mined elsewhere around the world. Today Epsom salt is used as bath salts and foot soaks, as well as being used to nourish soil. The problem was that hunters and gamekeepers mounted on horses were constantly having their traditional tall top hats knocked off their heads when they rode under low hanging branches. Thomas Coke, First Earl of Leicester, went to the London hat shop owned by Thomas and William Bowler, asking them to make a low-crowned, sturdy hat that would solve this problem. In comic strips, country songs and Disney films, dogs and babies go together like Batman and Robin. In real time, where potential danger and acts of instinct and nature can’t be edited out, dogs and babies require constant supervision and should never be left alone in a room together.

In Jacksonville, N.C., a 12-week-old pit bull chewed the toes off the left foot of a 4-month-old infant as the child’s mother slept in another room.

Robie Lynn Jenkins had taken medication that induced a sleep deep enough to drown out her infant’s cries through the night. Jenkins’ boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, was also asleep in the room.

The couple claims they were watching the puppy as a favor to a friend who is in jail on gun charges.

They now face charges of their own: felony child abuse.

Before everyone screams “pit bull,” a reminder:

Only a month earlier, in Lexington, Ky., the owners of a Native American Indian Dog spotted the family pup trotting toward the woods behind their back yard with their newborn infant in his jaws. Four-day-old Alexander James Smith suffered two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture and numerous cuts and bruises.

A year before that, in Tulsa, Okla., a 6-weekold black Labrador fatally mauled 2-month-old Zane Alen Earles as he sat unattended in an infant swing in the family’s living room. Several relatives were home at the time.

In January 2008, 8-month-old Andrew Stein was inexplicably and fatally mauled by a 7-year-old chocolate Doberman pinscher, the Stein family pet from puppyhood, with no history of aggression.

And in 2001, a 4-pound Pomeranian killed a 6-week-old girl in Los Angeles as she lay in her crib.

Afterward, LA Sheriff’s Deputy Cruz Solis commented, “Obviously it doesn’t take much to kill a 6-week-old baby, but it’s not something that hap-

Scammers Try New Ways to Trick You

How many phone calls did you receive today? Of those, how many were scam calls?

So far today I’ve received eight, which inspired me to revisit the bothersome subject in this week's column.

Scammers are nothing new, but the tricks that they use are changing, and we need to be up on all of their latest tactics and schemes to steal our identities and our money.

One of the most recent scammer schemes is something called tele-transformer.

This is step one in the scammer bag of tricks before handing you off to the closers who will pull you into a deal. Sometimes the message will leave a call-back number. Or they’ll claim they’re returning your call, or calling because you recently bought one of their products.

The 3 Rules About Social Security Checks Everyone Should Know

There are some basic facts about when and how Social Security checks are due and delivered that confuse many people. To help you understand, here are three rules about getting Social Security checks that everyone needs to know.

No. 1: Social Security benefits are paid one month behind. In other words, the benefit payment for May will be sent to you in June.

No. 2: For most people, your Social Security benefit arrives in your bank account on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month.

Although, some people, mostly old-timers, get their check on the third of each month.

No. 3: Social Security benefits are not prorated. As you will learn, this is good news while you are alive. But it can be bad news for your survivors after you die.

The rest of this column will explain these rules.

So, the first rule is pretty cut and dried.

Some may wonder why checks are sent one month late. In a nutshell, the law says you must meet all the eligibility requirements for an entire month in order to get a Social Security check for that month.

In other words, the government must wait until the month is over with before it knows for sure that you are due benefits for that month.

One other point about this rule: When the Social Security retirement application asks you which month you want your benefits to start, don’t worry about the month you will actually be paid.

Just put down the eligibility month. For example, if you want benefits to start at age 65, and you are 65 in May 2021, indicate May as your starting month -not June, even though that is when you will actually be paid.

The second rule takes a little more explanation. For decades, all Social Security benefits were paid on the third of each month. But as the number of Social Security beneficiaries grew, Social Security officials noted that this once-a-month payment schedule was putting a huge workload on their field offices and call centers at the beginning of each month. So, they decided to stagger Social Security payment dates on each of three Wednesdays throughout the month.

-- If you were born on the first through 10th of the month, you will get your Social Security check on the second Wednesday of each month.

-- If you were born on the 11th through 20th of the month, you will get your Social Security check on the third Wednesday of the month.

-- If you were born on the 21st through 31st of the month, you will get your Social Security check on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Having said that, some people (mostly people who were already getting benefits before the staggered delivery schedule went into effect) still get their benefits delivered on the third of each month. And for reasons I haven’t been able to figure out, some members of a married couple will get his or her benefits on the Wednesday delivery date that applies to the other spouse.

And as I hinted earlier, when it comes to the third rule, the proration of Social Security checks, it is generally good news on the front end of your Social Security experience but bad news on the back end. For example, let’s say Mary was born on Aug. 28, 1955, and wants her benefits to begin at her full retirement age of 66 and 2 months -- or Oct. 28, 2021. She will get a Social Security check for the

Because prediabetes typically causes no outward symptoms, most people that have it don’t realize it. The only way to know for sure if you have it is to get a blood test.

Dear Wondering: Underlying today’s growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes is a much larger epidemic called prediabetes.

This occurs when the blood sugar levels are higher than they should be but not high enough to be called diabetes.

Everyone age 45 years or older should consider getting tested for prediabetes, especially if you are overweight with a body mass index (BMI) above 25. Go to CDC.gov/bmi to calculate your BMI.

If you are younger than 45 but are overweight, or have high blood pressure, a family history of diabetes, or belong to an ethnic group (Latino, Asian, African or Native American) at high risk for diabetes, you should get checked too.

To help you determine your risk of diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has a quick, online risk test you can take for free at DoIHavePrediabetes.org.

if you’re reluctant to visit your doctor to get tested, an alternative is to go to the drug store, buy a blood glucose meter and test yourself at home. They cost around $20.

If you find that you are prediabetic or diabetic, you need to see your doctor to develop a plan to get it under control. The ADA recommends losing weight and doing moderate exercise – such as 150 minutes a week of brisk walking. And when lifestyle changes alone don’t work, medication might.
