• It might seem that world-renowned fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel led an elegant, privileged life, but her beginnings were actually quite humble. She was born in a French village in 1883, one of six children in an impoverished family of a street peddler father and a laundress mother. Her 32-year-old mother died when Gabrielle was 11, and her father, overwhelmed and unable to provide for the family, placed her and her two sisters in a charity orphanage operated by Catholic nuns.

They never saw their father again.

• During her six years in the orphanage, Gabrielle was taught to sew, a useful skill that literally shaped the rest of her life. When she left the institution, she found employment as a seamstress and milliner, with a side job as a cabaret singer, where she gained local popularity and earned the nickname Coco.

• She became well known among many aristocratic cabaret patrons, and through her contacts she began to mingle in upper class social circles. With help from some financial benefactors in 1921, she began to dabble in perfumery, an interest she had long held.

Yet she never slept there. She chose to reside in a suite at the Ritz Hotel for 34 years, walking back and forth each day. She used the apartment “to work, read, daydream, rest, lunch and entertain.” It was Coco’s habit to notify the staff of her arrival time in order to have all the rooms spritzed with ADVERTIS No. 5 perfume.

the first modern alcohol-based perfume in 1370, a mixture of lemon, orange blossom,

thyme, and rosemary, a concoction known as Hungary Water.

• In the 1500s, French King Louis XV advanced the popularity of fragrance by adding perfume to furniture, gloves, clothing, and bathwater.

MAKING PERFUME

• The process of making perfume is quite complex, beginning with the extraction of the fragrant oils from plants, most commonly through steam distillation. This involves boiling the materials, which releases the essential oils.

The steam and oils are then condensed once the oil separates from the water. The oils are diluted with alcohol, which also seals in the fragrance by delaying evaporation. The solution then steeps in copper pots, then is cooled to allow any foreign particles to settle out before the filtering process, and finally, the injection into containers.

• In 1957, perfume and fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, who created the dresses worn by Audrey Hepburn, blended a special scent just for her as a gift. He named it L’Interdit, which translates from the French for “forbidden,” using rose, jasmine, violet, iris, narcissus, and sandalwood in the fragrance. Hepburn wore it exclusively for a year, after which Givenchy released it to the public, with Hepburn as the “face” of the perfume, the first actress to do so.

• Baccarat Les Larmes Sacree de Thebes, a blend of frankincense and myrrh scents, is packaged in a handmade Baccarat crystal pyramid bottle, and sells for a mere $6,800 an ounce.  CLIP AND SAVE

• How about DKNY’s Golden Delicious perfume for $1 million an ounce? The company offered this blend of rose, musk, sandalwood, orange blossom, gardenia, and golden delicious apple in a bottle featuring 2,090 precious stones, including yellow sapphires, white diamonds, pink diamonds, rose-cut diamonds, and a canary yellow diamond on the cap. If that’s out of your budget, you can purchase a 3.4 oz. Eau de Parfum spray of the scent for around $40.

• The world’s most expensive perfume was presented in Dubai in 2019 with a price tag of $1.29 million. Its name is Shumukh, which translates from Arabic to “deserving the highest.”

Three-Cheese Baked Penne This comforting, vegetarian pasta bake combines three kinds of cheese for a gooey, creamy main dish that’s still packed with protein and other healthy nutrients.

15 ounces part-skim ricotta cheese 4 ounces shredded part-skim mozzarella 1 ounces Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon olive oil 3 cloves garlic 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1 can crushed tomatoes 2 sprigs basil Salt 1 box whole-wheat penne 1 pound green beans 1/4 cup finely chopped basil leaves Pepper

1. Heat oven to 400 F. In bowl, combine cheeses.

2. In 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium.

Add garlic and red pepper; cook 30 seconds. Stir in tomatoes, basil sprigs and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

Heat to boiling, then reduce heat to simmer 20 minutes. Discard basil sprigs.

3. Meanwhile, heat covered 6-quart pot of water to boiling on high. Add 2 teaspoons salt and pasta; cook 5 minutes less than minimum time that label directs, stirring. Add beans; cook 4 minutes.

4. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water. Drain pasta and beans; return to pot. If tomato sauce is too thick, stir in reserved pasta water. To pasta in pot, stir in tomato sauce, chopped basil and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and black pepper.

5. Spoon half of pasta mixture into 3-quart shallow baking dish. Dollop with half of cheese mixture. Repeat. Cover with foil; bake 10 minutes. Uncover; bake 10 minutes or until cheese has melted. Serves 6.

Soak several washcloths and store them in your freezer. Whenever your puppy puts his teeth to anything you’d rather he not, take the item away and immediately sub in a frozen washcloth. His sore gums will feel immediate relief, and the previous item will fade from memory like so many forgotten baby teeth. Ice cubes also do the trick.

The pain of teething also brings nipping and mouthing. Nipping is a diminutive bite. Mouthing is the constant placement of the dog’s mouth on some part of you -- hand, leg, ankle, arm. Both habits can lead to biting if not corrected, so keep the washcloths coming.

2) There will be elimination.

Eliminating bodily waste is an act of nature -- like breathing. We as dog owners must understand that he doesn’t care where he goes -- we care.

Thus, it is our job to teach him what we want. And so we must first make a choice: outside or inside?

Housebreaking your puppy means he goes outside and only outside. Paper training entails teaching him to go inside the house, in a specific area. I strongly recommend housebreaking. Once a dog gets the go ahead to eliminate inside, it’s difficult to untrain and switch gears.

Avoiding Scammers During the Holiday Season Here we are already on the threshold of the holiday buying season. Where did the summer go? Sadly, it's also time for us to be leery of online purchasing scams and of every email we receive that includes links. The savvy schemers are waiting, and they know we're looking for gift ideas and are ready to buy.

It doesn’t help that Amazon recently sent out thank-you emails about gift card purchases ... which people believed was a scam email because they hadn’t made any gift card purchases.

Message boards lit up as people tried to parse and analyze each sentence of the emails to determine whether they were scams or not. Many changed their passwords. Thousands flooded Amazon with phone calls, only to be assured that there was no scam, that it was an accident on Amazon’s part to send out all these emails.

Amazon quickly sent out follow-up emails to those customers to apologize for the error.

There was a collective sigh of relief that the email wasn’t a scam. But we shouldn’t let our guard down too quickly. And we shouldn’t be

Flipping Out I tell you, one of these days, I am going to burst. Why does my housekeeper think she is an interior designer? As a matter of fact, as I reflect a bit on the past, most of my previous housekeepers have moved my whole house around. Why? I guess they all thought they were auditioning for Zoila Chavez’s job on Bravo’s “Flipping Out.” Every Friday when I get home from work, the guessing game begins.

From the four corners of our home, you can hear, “WHERE IS THE ...?” and “I CAN”T FIND THE ...!”

And as I look around the rooms, inevitably, the lumbar pillows from the slipper chairs are on the sofa, the orchids that adorned the bar earlier in the day are now the centerpiece on the coffee table, and my stacks of shelter magazines are fanned out on the end tables in the living room as if it were a doctor’s waiting room.

But really, why am I complaining? I really shouldn’t be letting myself flip out. Every week is a different scheme. More than an effort to impress me, for better or worse, it’s an attempt at keeping my house feeling fresh. I probably should rejoice that I'm getting an opportunity to see my own things in a new light.

As I get older, I am learning to accept that my particular point of view on a room is not the only way to go. In reality, there are many ways to sort and redecorate, arrange and accessorize a

wary of scammers only on Amazon. It can happen with other online merchants as well.

Don’t fall for suspicious activity scams wherein the scammer tries to convince you that your account has been either deleted or suspended for suspicious activity. What the scammer wants, of course, is your payment information, username and password. Don’t tell them anything. Call the merchant directly to inquire whether there is a problem with your account.

Then there is the fake order confirmation that indicates you’ve made a very large purchase. A pre-recorded phone message will ask if you want to cancel or confirm that order. You’ll be told to press a button to speak to a representative. Of course they’ll want you to provide your account codes to "verify" it’s really you.Hang up!

Sign on to your Amazon (or other merchant) account and see if that purchase is actually recorded as one of your orders.

On Amazon.com, there is a page dedicated to security. Click on “Help” at the very bottom of the page. Then select “Security & Privacy,” and then click on “Report Something Suspicious.” Other merchants likely have similar pages of security information. Use it.

I highly suggest the following fruitful exercise to get rid of the blahs. Invite a trusted friend to come to your home and ask them to rearrange or reaccessorize it. You’ll be amazed at how they perceive your home. Granted, it might take a bit of effort to get used to things being moved around, but the reward is the feeling of a freshly decorated room.

If you are not so fortunate as to have a friend to help you, revamping your decor still can be accomplished. The first rule of order is to keep an open mind. Allow yourself the freedom to pull a piece of furniture center stage from any room in the house.

Secondly, it’s time to let go of any item that you’ve been afraid to ditch despite the fact that it annoys you. Yes, it’s OK to let go of useless items, even if it means throwing out the Chia Pet your significant other’s mother gave you for your birthday. The trick is to be discreet. (Oops, it fell off the counter.)

Another tip: Moving heavier furniture will require hired hands. Ask a neighbor’s teenage kids or a handyman to help.

Finally, choose the time for your revamp wisely. If anyone in your household doesn’t deal well with change, it is best to wait until they are out for a weekend or at least for a few hours to get your mission accomplished.

It sounds like a lot of work, and it is! Maybe I should give the housekeeper a raise.

Accidents are not cause for punishment.

They are opportunities for learning. Rather than accentuating your displeasure when he gets something wrong during the early leaning stages, focus on demonstrating how pleased you are with his corrected behavior.

3) There will be leash resistance.

Most of us know better than to throw a saddle on a horse that’s never worn one and hop on. A leash to a dog is no more natural. Dogs don’t come with diplomas. We must be patient with them as they adjust to all our wacky expectations.

The best way to gently introduce the leash to your pooch is to fasten a lightweight model to his collar and supervise as he wears it around the house. This allows him to get used to the weight around his neck. Play fetch with him, have him walk to his food bowl and eat, and do any number of normal activities; however, do not ever leave him alone with the leash on.

Once he’s had time to warm to the idea, take him on a walk. Allow him to pull you. Tugging on the leash while it’s attached to his neck is no way to make him enjoy wearing one. He’ll learn to stop pulling once he begins obedience training and learns “heel.” Until then, cut the little guy some slack and have fun.

Rumor Mill Misleads Vets and Prisoners There are so gosh darn many myths and rumors circulating out there (mostly online) about Social Security. That’s why I wrote a book called “Social Security: 100 Myths and 100 Facts.” You can get it at Amazon for less than 10 bucks. Believe me, you’ll learn so much if you read that book.

But there are two groups of people who really have nothing to do with each other but who both seem to have their own special (and very misleading) Social Security rumor mills. I’m talking about military veterans and prisoners. I’ll deal with vets first.

Not a week goes by that I don’t get emails from veterans who have been led to believe that they are missing out on some extra Social Security benefits allegedly payable to people who served in the military.

As is so often the case with these misleading internet come-ons, there is a tiny kernel of truth to the rumor. But then exaggerated claims and false information take over, and things get blown way out of proportion.

Here are the facts in a nutshell: If you were in the military anytime up until 2001, the government may add a small amount of additional earnings to your Social Security record. And note that I am NOT talking about extra money added to your Social Security check. These are simply extra earnings incorporated into your Social Security earnings record -- the earnings record upon which your Social Security monthly benefit is based.

So the good news is you get these extra earnings put on your Social Security account. But the bad news is these extra credits are relatively minimal and usually will have little or no effect on the eventual amount of your Social Security check.

And you also need to know that these extra earnings are automatically added to your Social Security account. There is nothing you need to do to get the extra credits.

Now let’s back up and give a little more information about military service and Social Security. If you served on active duty or active-duty training in the military service any time after 1956, you paid Social Security taxes on your earnings just like anyone else working at a job covered by Social Security. And since 1988, inactive duty in the armed forces reserves, such as weekend drills, has also been covered by Social Security. That’s the simple part.

What leads to all the confusion is that Congress decided to add extra earnings credits to the Social Security records of military personnel. And the amount of those credits varies depending on the time served.

If you were in the military between 1957 and 1977, the government adds $300 to your Social Security record for each calendar quarter in which you received active-duty basic pay.

From 1978 through 2001, the government adds an extra $100 to your Social Security account for each $300 you earned in basic pay, up to a maximum of $1,200 per year. There are times when these extra credits aren’t granted. For example, if you enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980, and didn’t complete your full tour of duty, you won’t get the extra credits. Check with the Social Security Administra-

tion for more exceptions.

Beginning in 2002, the government stopped adding extra credits to Social Security records for military service.

As I said above, if you are due extra credits, you usually don’t need to do anything to get them added to your record. If you served from 1968 through 2001, those credits are automatically added to your Social Security account. If you served from 1957 through 1967, the credits will be added at the time you file for benefits. In some cases, you may be asked to provide your DD-214 (discharge papers) to verify your military service.

The story is a little different for older vets reading this. If you served in the armed forces between 1940 and 1956, Social Security taxes were not deducted from your military pay checks. But in most cases, the government did add $160 per month in earnings to your Social Security account for the time you served. These credits were automatically added at the time you applied for Social Security benefits.

So that’s the story. There are no big Social Security bonuses for vets. You don’t need to go to your Social Security office waving your DD-214 and expect to get a big pile of cash. (Although, as I pointed out above, folks who served between 1957 and 1967 may need to show their discharge papers at the time they file for benefits to get those extra earnings added to their Social Security account.)

And finally, it’s important that I repeat this message: Those extra earnings you get for your military service aren’t going to make you rich.

Because Social Security retirement benefits are figured using a 35-year base of earnings, a few hundred dollars sprinkled here and there into your Social Security account will have little if any effect on your eventual Social Security benefit.

And what about prisoners? First, you should know that Social Security benefits cannot be paid for months that a person is confined to a jail, prison or certain other public institutions for committing a

crime. Or to be more precise, benefits are suspended if someone is convicted of a criminal offense and sent to jail or prison for more than 30 continuous days. Notice that conviction is the key. Lots of people end up in jails while they are awaiting trial or pleas. But until there is a conviction with prison time involved, benefits will continue.

It’s also important to note that while the convict’s benefits are suspended, if he or she has a spouse or child getting monthly Social Security dependent checks on his or her record, those benefits will continue.

Of course, most people don’t spend the rest of their lives in prison. When they are released, Social Security benefits will be reinstated effective the month following the month they get out.

So, what’s the rumor being spread on the prisoner grapevine? It would have younger convicts, or rather, soon-to-be ex-cons, believe that as soon as they are released, they can waltz into their nearest Social Security office and sign up for Social Security disability benefits and have those checks start flowing into their bank accounts. There simply is no truth to that rumor.

Of course, anyone has the right to apply for Social Security disability benefits. But no one will get those benefits unless he or she meets all of the rather stringent qualifying criteria. For example, they must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in five out of the last 10 years. And they must have a disability that is so severe it is expected to keep them from being able to work for at least a year, or they must have a condition that is terminal.

Beer Set Made For Brewery Q: I have enclosed a photo of a tankard

and two matching mugs that I have owned for a long time. Each piece is marked with a crown and the words “Sterling China.” They are also marked with the name “C. Heurick.”

All three pieces are decorated with the same image of a man with a feather in his hat, a pipe and a tankard in his hand. The background shades gradiate from a pale yellow at the top to a reddish-brown at the bottom.

The tankard is approximately 14-inches tall and each mug is 6-inches tall. They are all in mint condition.

I am curious about their provenance and value for insurance purposes.

A: Adderley Ltd., made your teapot. They have made porcelain in Longton, Staffordshire, England, since 1906.

Bone china is a term for a mixture of feldspar, kaolin and bone ash. Adding bone ash to the formula creates a snow-white body. English potters discovered the formula around 1800. They were searching for a way to produce china similar to hard paste porcelain made in China and the European Continent.

At one time, all porcelain was made in China, thus the name “china.” Bone ash was the byproduct of animal bones, usually from cattle.

Bone china and English china are interchangeable terms. As a rule, porcelain marked “Made in England” was made after 1921.

• Eau de Cologne was concocted for the first time in 1709 by Johann Maria Farina, and was a blend of lemon, orange, tangerine, neroli (orange blossom oil), and lavender. Farina dubbed his creation Kolnisch Wasser, which translates “water from Cologne,” named after his hometown in Germany. It’s the oldest perfume still in production.

• The second-oldest is the Eau de Cologne 4711 by Muelhens, another Cologne, Germany product, introduced in 1799. Its main notes are lemon, neroli, jasmine, bergamot, basil, lavender, and rosemary. The company suffered a setback during World War II when its headquarters were destroyed by allied bombs that decimated nearly 90% of the city. An 800-ml (27 oz.) bottle of 4711 can be purchased today for around $35.

• French perfumer Francois Coty is regarded as the founding father of the modern perfume industry. In 1904, at age 26, Coty received the break he had been working toward. He took a chance delivering a case of his latest creation, La Rose Jacqueminot, to the perfume counter of a large Paris department store. Within minutes, customers began crowding around the counter, clambering to buy the fragrance.

The entire stock was gone almost immediately, and the store offered Coty a space on the floor exclusively for his products.

• It wasn’t long before the perfume had made him a millionaire. At the beginning of World War I in 1914, Coty perfumes were the number one in the world. In 1929, his estimated worth was $34 million (over $800 million in today’s dollars), much of which was lost in the stock market crash that year.

• Surveys indicate that 97% of people feel more confident when wearing a fragrance. About 78% claim they feel energized when wearing citrus scents. Women respondents say they feel the most feminine and attractive when they choose floral fragrances. 

Many short shots around the green can fall under the same body motion and principle of “start left, stay left, and finish left.” The bane of many amateurs is the improper weight distribution through these pitching and chipping shots.

1. Start left by narrowing your stance and adjusting the weight to be 70-80% on the left leg.

Your knees can kick inward slightly to press the weight forward.

2. Stay left in the backstroke by using the arm swing without attempting to shift the weight onto the right side. The hip and shoulder will turn but not allow weight shift in the feet or hips.

3. Finish left by rotating the body part way toward the target and supporting slightly more weight on the left side than address.
