* It was noted 18th-century German scientist, philosopher and satirist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg who made the following sage observation: “It is almost impossible to carry the torch of truth through a crowd without singeing somebody’s beard.” * Sometimes looking at local ordinances can make you wonder what inspired lawmakers to pass such laws. For instance, in Florida it’s illegal to wear nothing but liquid latex while in a public place. * The lyrics to that favorite Irish ballad “O Danny Boy” were actually written by an Englishman. * Famed comedic actor Charlie Chaplin was born in England, but at the age of 19 he came to the United States as a performer with the prestigious Fred Karno company. Interestingly, Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy fame, emigrated to the U.S. at the same time, as part of the same company -- as Chaplin’s understudy. * In a recent survey of pet owners, nearly half of all respondents said that the best description of their relationship with their pet would be “soul mate.” * Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, also is an autonomous region of Italy. If you ever decide to vacation there, keep an eye out for “casu marzu,” a cheese that’s produced locally. Whether you’re keeping an eye out in order to sample it or avoid it depends on whether or not you have an appetite for adventurous eating. The makers of “casu marzu” deliberately introduce into the process the larvae of a particular cheese fly. Though the cheese is sometimes cleaned out before it’s served, it’s often presented in its original state, wriggling maggots and all. *** Thought for the Day: “There is nothing more dangerous than a government of the many controlled by the few.” -- Lawrence Lessig

Every Home’s Most Overlooked (Free!) Heating and Cooling Devices Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

Who doesn’t love learning about a moneysaving tactic by or Mary investment Hunt that results in a net savings of thousands of dollars a year? I sure do! And I can count on maybe two fingers how many of those I’ve managed to deploy in my home in the past decade. It’s easy to think that the tiny things we can do to save money just aren’t worth the time and trouble. But they are because of the cumulative effect. Small things repeated often bring huge results. I call them little ways to save big. OPEN OR CLOSE YOUR WINDOWS. Your house or apartment is full of free heating and cooling devices. They’re called windows. Using your windows for more than letting in light is a great way to save some serious scratch. If you live where it’s cool at night and warm during the day open your windows at night to let the cool air in and close them in the morning to keep the warm air out. Use your curtains and blinds to block out the sun and keep daytime cooling costs down. Of course, if you live in a colder climate, throwing your curtains and blinds open when the sun is shining can easily raise the interior temperature of your house a few degrees. UNPLUG IT. Time it, sensor it, put it to sleep and smart-power-strip it. One way or another, drive a stake into the heart of phantom power drains. You could enjoy a decent dinner and movie for you and someone special once a year (including a generous tip) with money saved by unplugging unused devices. Smart power strips come in three types: timer, motion sensitive and current sensing. Think about which option is best for your situation. You’ll recoup the money you invest in these kinds of devices, many times over. DISCOUNTED GIFT CARDS. Treat yourself

to something special like dinner and a movie or that new power tool you’ve been eyeing and do it for 10-, 20- or even 30-percent off. Or get tricky with getting the supplies you need for a home repair or clothes you’ll need in the coming months for a lot less. Go to GiftCardGranny.com to purchase gift cards at discounted prices. (This is a site that aggregates available gift cards from many sites on the Internet that trade, buy and sell gift cards on the secondary market.) Now, combine your already discounted gift card with sales to double or even triple your savings. Note: Discounted gift cards are available in abundance at this time of year because many people received gift cards for Christmas that they could not use. Rather than get nothing, they sell them at a big discount to get something they can use (like cash)! Or they trade them for gift cards they can use. The result is that many gift cards become available for sale at a significantly-lower-than-face-value price -- legally and legitimately. BUY OFF-SEASON. Who buys an air conditioner in January or a snow blower in May? Savvy shoppers looking for steep discounts, that’s who! It costs retailers more to keep seasonal merchandise in a warehouse until next year than it does to sell it at seriously discounted prices. The reason is that not only does warehouse space cost money, but it also takes time, fuel and labor to move goods from stores to warehouses and back again. Not to mention that when an item is in storage until next season, so is that store’s money. Whenever possible, plan your purchases for the end of seasons to save. CLEANING CALENDAR. Clogged filters and vents on appliances, HVAC (heating ventilation air conditioning) and cars cause them to operate less efficiently, requiring more energy to operate. Unfortunately, they are incredibly easy to forget about, so put them on a rotation. Schedule these simple tasks on your kitchen calendar or smartphone on a regularly recurring basis. Make a day of it every three or six months. Call it Filter Friday and use that day to check, clean or replace each of your household, garden and automotive filters and vents. Week of August 23, 2015

More than 1,000 additional objects have been discovered so far, and an estimated 100,000 more are believed to exist.

D E T O DEM August 24 has been observed as Pluto Demoted Day since 2006. Why did this happen? Follow along and learn about the discovery of what was once considered a planet in our solar system. • From 1930 until 2006, Pluto was classified as the ninth planet in our solar system, joining Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. A 23-year-old astronomer from Kansas, Clyde Tombaugh, was a researcher at Flagstaff, Arizona’s Lowell Observatory in 1930, when he discovered the celestial body that would be named Pluto. An eleven-yearold schoolgirl from Oxford, England, proposed the name of Pluto, after the Greek god of the underworld, with her suggestion beating out scores of other submissions. • Pluto consists of one-third water and two-thirds rock. It’s only about 1,600 miles in diameter, Friday, 5/26/15 smaller than the Earth’s moon, only 66% of the moon’s diameter and one-sixth of its mass. Pluto’s surface temperature is -380° F. • Pluto is part of the Kuiper Belt, a region of the solar system beyond the planets, similar to an asteroid belt. After the discovery of Pluto in 1930, astronomers began to speculate about the existence of more such bodies in the region. In 1992, the second object in the area was found. es e lark

• “Clearing the neighborhood” refers to a planet’s ability to remove smaller bodies near its orbit by “collision, capture, or gravitational disturbance.” It is this condition that qualified Pluto, because it has other objects in its orbit, as well as moving into the orbit of Neptune during its 246-year revolution around the Sun. • Now and then, Pluto’s orbit actually takes it closer to the Sun than Neptune’s, although Pluto is farther away from the Sun. • In August of 2006, members of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) gathered together in Prague to determine the status of Pluto. It was voted to demote Pluto to a dwarf planet, joining four others recognized by the IAU – Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Pluto is the second most massive of its kind, behind Eris, the largest. At one time, Ceres had been classified as the eighth planet when first discovered in 1801 between Mars and Jupiter. It remained in that category for about 50 years, until astronomers began to discover more and more similar bodies in the same area, and reclassified Ceres as an asteroid. • When Eris was discovered in 2005, initial reports called it the tenth planet, setting up a debate in

It Ain’t Just a River

“We got Lucy, a female yellow Lab, at 8 weeks old. The vet told us then that she was aggressive and we would need to have her trained. We could not believe it. We tried basic puppy training, but did not want her to be so disciplined that she would cower or be afraid of us. Basically, we did not listen -- she seemed so sweet. “Now, she growls all the time. We used to laugh at it and think she was just grumpy, but it has gotten to the point that she curls her lips at my two cats and growls at us if we ask her to get off the bed or accidentally bump her from under the covers. “She raises her lips to the grandkids from time to time and has snapped at my granddaughter. She has bitten another dog, and two days ago she bit my cat. She has been “grumpy” since we’ve owned her. She is mostly my husband’s dog, and she loves him. He is in total denial that we have a problem -- he thinks she is only reacting to protect herself. “I am now very concerned. Can we do anything to change this behavior aside from keeping her muzzled all the time, which I do not really want to do and my husband will not even consider? He loves this dog, does not make her respect boundaries and has no interest in training her. She has the run of our house and seems to be getting more aggressive as she gets older. I am now trying to keep the two cats and the dog separated, but my husband thinks I am overreacting. “I am writing for two reasons: I want to get Lucy the training she needs so that she does not hurt anyone or anything, and I need to get my husband to see that we have a problem.” Wrong order. First she has to get her husband to acknowledge that they have a problem. Only then can training be effective. When I called to tell her that, the first thing she said was, “I know it looks bad, but it’s not.” What could be worse? Canine serial killer? Shuffling of Feet Raises Red Flag DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 85 and in good health, except for dizzy spells. It was said that I have vertigo, but I do not believe this to be the case. Meclizine is of no help. The symptoms are worst when I close my eyes: When I do, I feel like may fall. Other symptoms are shuffling of feet, dizziness and dizziness on standing too quickly. Is it possible I have Meniere’s disease? -- A.T.H. ANSWER: “Dizziness” is a very nonspecific term. It can mean vertigo, which is a sensation of movement when there isn’t any; lightheadedness, such as we can all get sometimes when standing too quickly; or a disorientation that can happen when blood sugar is low. Meniere’s disease is a cause of true vertigo, often with ringing in the ears and hearing loss. Shuffling of the feet is a red flag for Parkinson’s disease. Dizziness is a common if not universal symptom in people with Parkinson’s. However, only a thorough history and physical exam can make the diagnosis. If your regular doctor hasn’t been able to help, you might see a neurologist, who is an expert in making diagnoses about neurologic symptoms such as dizziness. There are many possible causes. YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Social Security’s Death Benefit I’ve received several emails in the past week or so about Social Security’s one-time $255 death benefit. As part of my response, I told each correspondent that I had addressed their issues in a recent column. But later, I checked and learned the last time I discussed the issue was 5 years ago. Gosh! Time flies when you’re having fun writing Social Security columns! So let me dust off and update that old column and once again cover the issue of this little oddball Social Security benefit. The so-called “death benefit,” or as some people refer to it, the “burial benefit,” has an interesting history. It didn’t start out as a death benefit, per se, at least not in the context it is thought of today. And it certainly was never meant to be a burial benefit. As part of the thinking that went into the original Social Security act passed in 1935, Congress realized that many of the new Social Security taxpayers would die before they ever had a chance to collect benefits. Or they would die without having earned enough “quarters of coverage” to be insured -- meaning that their family members would not be eligible for any survivor benefits. So Congress decided to compensate the families of the deceased with some form of reimbursement for the Social Security taxes that they had paid into the system. They set up a one-time benefit they called the “lump sum death payment.” It was originally intended to reimburse the family with an amount equal to three and one-half percent of the money the deceased had paid into the system. It was supposed to be a temporary benefit, because Congress knew that as time passed, most workers would be paying a sufficient amount of money into Social Security so that they would be insured for survivor benefits. In other words, when a taxpayer died, the widow or widower (and any minor children) would get monthly benefits. They figured the lump sum death benefit eventually would no longer be needed. But as often happens with government pro-

You might start out by checking her bank deposit statements for the past several months. Pay particular attention to the first deposit of her widow’s benefits. I’m guessing it was $255 larger than her regular monthly widow’s rate. In other words, SSA frequently wraps up the one-time death benefit in with the first widow’s payment. If you don’t see the money there, then call SSA at 800-772-1213 to find out what went wrong.

Tea Set Serves as Family Legacy

Hutschenreuther Porcelain was founded by Carl Hutschenreuter in Hohenberg, Bavaria, Germany, in 1914. They are known for their extremely high quality dinnerware and figurines. They are still in business and also produce limited-edition pieces. The word “Spahn” is actually “Spahr.” German designer, Carl Spahr, developed a technique of decorating porcelain and glass with silver overlay. His overlay was used by Hutschenreuter Porcelain Factory and Rosenthal Porcelain and Glass Co., as well as other factories and glass designers. Objects marked “Spahr 1000” show that the purest form of silver was used. “Favorit” refers to the shape of the porcelain dishes. Your set was made in the mid-20th century and would be worth $800 to $1,200.

Kay Finch Pottery was located in California. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Unusual (from page page 3) and fried. Fans of this unusual food serve it for breakfast topped with ketchup or maple syrup. • What about all the sauces we order on our dinners? When you order your steak smothered with béarnaise sauce, it will come with a creamy sauce of egg yolks, butter, shallots, vinegar, wine, and tarragon. Eggs Benedict comes covered with Hollandaise sauce, an emulsion of eggs yolks, butter, and lemon juice. Your fish dinner might be served with remoulade sauce, similar to tartar sauce, a mayonnaise mixed with pickles, horseradish, anchovies, and capers, flavored with curry. • While in New York City, you might want to try an egg cream, which ironically, contains neither eggs nor cream. It’s a fountain drink made from milk, seltzer, and chocolate syrup, a concoction dreamed up by Brooklyn candy store owner Louis Auster in the late 1800s. • Ordering “bangers and mash” while in Great Britain will get you a dish of pork sausage and mashed potatoes, while “bubble and squeak” will be a mixture of mashed potatoes, and boiled cabbage, fried until brown. “Yorkshire pudding” might sound like dessert, but it’s really a batter of eggs, flour, and milk baked in meat drippings until puffy. If you order “toad in the hole,” your Yorkshire pudding will contain bits of sausage. 

Contact Gate

Center face contact should be the number one fundamental on any players’ list. When you mishit the center of the face, you’ll lose distance and direction control if the mishit is severe enough. If you’ve ever seen a top player’s set of irons, you’ll see a dime size wear spot in the center of the face. A swing’s effectiveness should be measured by its’ ability to consistently hit center face contacted shots. The secret to gaining mastery of the center hit is creating awareness and feedback to the true space your clubhead is passing through. By using two tees spaced a little over a clubhead apart, start by swinging through the open space until you’re aware of how you govern the space you pass through. Then hit shots with enough room to hit the ball, yet not hit the tees. Take note of where your consistent mishits tend to occur.

Sometimes you’ll make changes to the set-up distances, or you’ll develop feelings with the swing that create a correct pass through space inADVERTISING order to hit center contacted shots. Either PROOF way, you’re bound to get better with your ball Finalstriking. Changes DUE: 5:00
