He opened a factory to manufacture them, but soon became bored managing the operation and went back to the business of tinkering and inventing things. • When the Civil War broke out he was horrified by the carnage and decided to do something to halt the pain of war. His plan was to invent a unique gun that was so formidable and devastating that it would end war forever.
of poor quality. James Watt, inventor of the first practical steam engine, had a recurring dream one week. In it, he seemed to be in a heavy rainstorm but instead of water drops, he was being pelted with tiny lead pellets that bounced and rolled about him on the ground. Intrigued by the dream, Watt experimented by releasing molten droplets of lead from the top of a church tower into a large water-filled tub below. When he recovered the pellets, he found to his amazement that during their fall they had shaped into perfectly round pellets, instantly hardening upon landing in the water. To this day, lead shot is made by the same process that Watt dreamed up.

• Samuel Colt grew up in Connecticut in the early 1800’s. When he was eight, his brother gave him an old pistol, which he quickly learned to disassemble and reassemble again. He began reading about gunpowder and found directions for making the substance. At age 11, he made his own gunpowder, sifted it into his bullet cartridges, and went out into the woods to see if it would work. It worked. Samuel Colt became fascinated with guns.

Low-Down Dirty Rotten Pet-Flippers According to the Bible, the love of money is the root of all evil. According to Mark Twain, the lack of money is the root of all evil. For love or lack, people concoct some low-down dirty schemes in the name of the blessed dollar. One of the dirtiest involves flipping pets. With not the slightest care for the anxiety and heartbreak that comes with a missing dog or cat -- a family member lost -- this particular brand of criminal steals lost dogs off of neighborhood streets or right out of the dog’s own yard and sells them for a quick buck on sites such as Craigslist. These crooks also scour “lost dog, found dog” sites, claiming a “found dog” as their own only to turn around and hock the pooch for anywhere from $50 to $1,000, depending on the popularity of the breed. NBC’s Today.com produced a story about the alarming surge in pet flipping. A cute little schnauzer named Rosie went missing in Indianapolis, and so her owner, Leisa Waggoner, launched a search. She posted missing dog fliers and hit the lost dog sites. That’s where she found her Rosie -- already claimed by some poser. When Waggoner managed to locate and contact the con who had falsely claimed Rosie, the woman, Jennifer Dodd, attempted to extort a reward from Waggoner for Rosie’s return. Dodd was arrested and pleaded guilty to felony theft. And here’s the part that would get a “told ya so” from Twain: Dodd said she did it for cash to buy diapers for her kids, saying, “I’m a single mom. I have fraternal twins on the way, and I have a 1-year-old, and you know, the economy’s hard and stuff nowadays.” “Hard and stuff” or not, the need to support your own family doesn’t justify the harming of another family. Ultimately, Dodd got caught because she’s a dolt who delivered her extortion note via text message. Most criminals aren’t the inept Virgil Starkwells of Woody Allen’s “Take the Money and Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

worked all his life and paid into Social Security. If he dies, I won’t be allowed to get a nickel in Social Security widow’s benefits because of some stupid offset law. This makes no sense!
YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
I’ll Tell You What’s Right With Social Security! I get a lot of emails from readers that start with some version of the phrase: “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security!” And then they go off on a little bit of a rant, almost always citing some misinterpretation of Social Security laws. In the past, I’ve written a similar column with all the rants coming from men who were usually griping about some misunderstood issues involving the politics of Social Security. However, today’s questions all come from women with some misplaced gripes about Social Security benefits for spouses. In each case, I will set the record straight and explain what is right with Social Security.
A: Actually, what you call a “stupid offset law” is a very well thought out provision of Social Security law that makes perfect sense. It’s called the “government pension offset.” In a nutshell, it says that an amount equal to two-thirds of your teacher’s pension must be deducted from any spousal benefits you are due from Social Security. Why does the law make sense? Consider this: Assume you had worked all your life at a job covered by Social Security and you were now getting $3,500 in a Social Security retirement benefit instead of a teacher’s retirement benefit. You would never be eligible for anything on your husband’s record after he dies because your own Social Security benefit would offset any widow’s benefits you might be due. The government pension offset law merely makes sure your teacher’s retirement pension is treated the same way as a Social Security retirement pension has always been treated.
Q:
cause you don’t work outside the home, you are financially dependent on your husband. That’s what makes you potentially eligible for a dependent wife’s benefit on his record. But because he is still working, the law assumes he is still supporting you financially. There is no reason to pay you a dependent spouse’s Social Security benefit while your husband is still working. To put it more bluntly: Why should the taxpayers support you when your husband is still supporting you? Someday he will retire, and Social Security will start paying him a retirement benefit that’s intended to partially replace the income he’s lost because he stopped working. And at that time, Social Security will start paying you a wife’s benefit that’s intended to partially replace that portion of his income he was using to support you. But your friend’s case is different. The law cannot assume that her ex-husband is supporting her. So the rules cut divorced women a bit of a break. She is able to get a dependent wife’s benefit on her husband’s record even if he isn’t yet getting Social Security retirement benefits himself. He simply has to be old enough to qualify for benefits. You said your friend’s ex is 62. That makes him old enough for Social Security. And your friend is also 62, meaning she is also old enough to qualify for divorced wife’s benefits.
I’ll tell you what’s wrong with Social Security! I just heard something about the program that is making my blood boil! Studies Don’t Support CDB Oil for Depression DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is taking hemp-based CBD oil for depression. He purchased this at a health food store. His doctor prescribed pills that he was unable to tolerate due to suicidal thoughts. He is unable to go outside when taking CBD. We would like to know if it will show up in a drug test as part of a job interview. Should he be taking it? -- D.
small (if any) effect on blood calcium levels, as these are tightly regulated through multiple means, especially the parathyroid hormone level and the kidneys. I see many people who are given a sixweek course of high-dose vitamin D2, such as the 50,000 units weekly for six weeks you were prescribed. I do not prescribe it that way, since many people wrongly feel that this will “cure” their low vitamin D, and they stop monitoring it after the course of treatment. Many people have inadequate vitamin D levels, and although there is some disagreement about what levels need to be treated, yours is in the range where everyone agrees treatment is necessary. For those who need it, ongoing supplementation of vitamin D is necessary, whether through pills, diet or sun exposure. For most people with a level as low as yours, oral supplementation is by far the most effective and safest treatment. I prefer 1,000-2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily as a starting point for supplementation in most. * * * Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer

VETERANS POST by Freddie Groves
VA Grants to Help Homeless Veterans More than 260 non-profit community programs across the country received portions of $418 million in grants for the Support Services for Veteran Families program. Last year alone the Department of Veterans Affairs served 77,590 veterans and their 19,919 children in the program. The SSVF program runs in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, District of Columbia and Guam. Its main focus is homelessness and getting veterans and their families into permanent housing. The SSVF partners with community programs with all manner of help: case management, VA benefits, health care, child care, daily living services, legal assistance, transportation, financial planning, counseling and much more. In some cases, there are time-limited payments to landlords, utilities and moving companies if that helps a veteran and family to stay in or get to permanent housing. To learn more about the SSVF program, go online to www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf. There’s a list of SSVF providers by state for programs all across the country, plus contact information and phone numbers. You also can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AIDVET (1-877-424-3838). The best website is www.va.gov/homeless, where you can click on Community Resource and Referral Centers (CRRCs). That page also has a chat link. If you’re in crisis, call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1. Additionally, you can call your closest VA medical center. If you have no other options (no phone, no internet, are homeless or are at imminent risk for it), just go. Just show up at the medical center. If you are not yet homeless, contact them in advance, due to COVID restrictions. One thing to keep in mind: These grants given to community programs are not bottomless buckets. Funding can and does run out, and there isn’t more until the next disbursement. If you need help, apply now. Make your calls, get put on lists. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot person-

His doctor can also request the services of an occupational therapist and a personal care aide to assist with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and using the bathroom. His doctor must renew and certify his home health plan every 60 days. He will also need to use a home health agency that is certified by Medicare. If he meets all of the requirements, Medicare should pay for his in-home health care.

Does Medicare Cover Home Health Care? DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: How does Medicare cover in-home health care? My husband has a chronic health condition that makes it difficult for him to leave the house, so I’m wondering if he could qualify for Medicare home health care. --Seeking Help Dear Seeking: Medicare covers a wide variety of part-time or intermittent in-home health care services to beneficiaries in need, if they meet Medicare’s criteria. Here’s how it works.
But be aware that Medicare will not pay for personal care aide services (for bathing, dressing, using the bathroom, etc.) alone if he does not need skilled-nursing or skilled-therapy services too. Homemaker services, such as shopping, meal preparation and cleaning are not covered either. If your husband has original Medicare, you can locate a Medicare-certified home health agency by calling 800-633-4227 or by visiting Medicare.gov/care-compare. If he has a Medicare Advantage plan, you should contact his plan directly and ask which home health agencies work with the plan and are within the plan’s network of providers.

Medicaid: If your income is low, your husband may qualify for Medicaid, which offers different home and community-based services that can pay for in-home care. To investigate this, contact your local Medicaid office. Also see if PACE – which stands for “Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly” – is available in your area (see NPAonline.org). PACE provides in-home care, including help with activities of daily living, such as meals, dental and medical care, among other benefits. Veterans Benefits: If your husband is a veteran, the VA also offers some benefits that can help. Two programs to inquire about are “Aid and Attendance or Housebound Allowances” and the “Veteran-Directed Care” program. Both programs provide monthly financial benefits to eligible veterans that can help pay for in-home care. To learn more, contact your regional VA benefit office (see Benefits.va.gov/benefits/offices.asp or call 800–827–1000). To look for these and other programs in your area that can help pay your husband’s home care, go to PayingForSeniorCare.com and click on “Find Financial Assistance for Care” to access their Eldercare Financial Assistance Locator tool.

independent nation in 1948, he joined the Israeli army and began designing guns. One gun won a competition in 1951 and was subsequently adopted by the Israel Defense Forces. The gun was immediately named after him over his objections: the Uzi. • The Uzi was almost impossible to misfire, was lightweight and compact, and able to withstand dust and grit. The Uzi became the largest-selling submachine gun in the western world and was eventually used by some 20 armies around the world. POPULAR PELLET RIFLE
• In the 1880s, Clarence Hamilton owned the Plymouth Iron Windmill Company in Michigan. He also operated the Plymouth Air Rifle Company. The windmill company wasn’t doing well. Then he started giving away a free air rifle with the purchase of every windmill. The little air guns soared in popularity. After practice shooting one of Hamilton's rifles, the impressed manager of the windmill company exclaimed, “Boy, that’s a daisy!” Hamilton liked the sound of that, and that’s how the Daisy Air Rifle came to be, followed by the Red Ryder BB Gun. • The term “BB” denoted a particular size of lead shot. The size “00” was called “double ought” and was the largest size of shot. Often used for hunting deer, it became known as buckshot. The size “BB” was used for smaller prey and became known as birdshot. There were also various sizes in between. • The crosshairs you see when you squint through a riflescope are printed on at the factory. In early years however, the crosshairs were made of spider silk. And not silk from any spider, but the silk of the female black widow, whose silk is much heavier and stronger than any other spider species. □
