The Mariana Trench (from page one) the vessels that made these measurements. The Challenger Deep area of the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in all of Earth’s oceans, at 36,200 feet (11,034 m) below sea level. • By comparison, most ocean life lives above a depth of 660 feet. The deepest a human has ever scuba dived is 1,090 feet. Nuclear submarines travel at a depth of about 850 feet. Whales are rarely seen below 8,000 feet. The depth of the sunken Titanic is 12,467 feet. ORIGIN AND FORMATIONS
• The Mariana Trench is located where two tectonic plates collide, with the Pacific Plate being forced downward into the mantle underneath the Mariana Plate. This subduction zone forms the trench. Although there are other trenches in ocean floors across the planet, this is the deepest. That's because it’s in the middle of the ocean where there are no rivers nearby constantly discharging mud and silt to fill the trench. The Pacific plate is also comprised of dense volcanic rock which is very heavy, weighing the ocean floor down further.

• Deepsea Challenger weighed less than onetenth that of the Trieste, but carried onboard much more scientific high-tech equipment. Cameron was able to spend three hours on the bottom after a descent that lasted two hours and 37 minutes. However, the extreme pressures took a toll on his equipment. Batteries drained, sonar died, and some of his vessel’s thrusters malfunctioned, making maneuvering the craft difficult.
volcano oozes a pool of molten sulfur, a phenomenon seen nowhere else on earth. • Other volcanoes vent hydrogen sulfide which feeds a specific type of bacteria, which feeds specialized microbes, which in turn feeds fish. LIVING CREATURES
• Recent scientific expeditions have discovered surprisingly diverse life in these harsh conditions. Animals living in the deepest parts of the Mariana Trench easily survive in complete darkness under the extreme pressure.

• In 2019, American undersea explorer Victor Vescovo reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench in a submersible called the Limiting Factor. He reached a record-setting depth of 35,853 feet, and noted the presence of a plastic grocery bag and several candy wrappers on the sea floor. Since then, the Limiting Factor has made a number of subsequent trips to the bottom of Challenger Deep.

James Cameron donated his submersible Deepsea Challenger to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who later decided to ship it on loan to Australia. While in transit to port aboard a flatbed semi, the truck caught fire when the brakes overheated, damaging the submersible beyond repair.

Meet Your Own Personal Loan Shark
* Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. * A bizarre dream in which cannibals surrounded him and prepared to cook him as they waved spears helped inspire Elias Howe’s invention of the sewing machine. When he awoke, he remembered that the spears had holes in their shafts and moved up and down.

easier on yourself. Lend yourself the $600 out of your special savings account, charge yourself 18% interest on your loan ($108) and divide the $708 you will owe yourself into 12 equal payments of $59. Your loan will be paid off in one year. Guess what? Suddenly, the greedy finance company is YOU. If you keep up your weekly deposits of $20 while you pay back your loan, you’ll have something like $2,150 in the bank at the end of the second year (the $400 balance in the account, the $708 you paid back, plus the $1,040 you deposited in year two). After you’ve paid back the first loan, perhaps you’ll want to borrow $1,000. The greedy finance company would charge about $255 to do that. If you charge yourself $180 and make monthly payments of $50 for two years (or $100 a month for one year), you’ll wind up with well over $3,000 in your account. As the borrower, treat yourself the same way the finance company would. Demand timely payments. Unless you’re actually hard on yourself, it’s not going to work. You’ll default. And just imagine how that will work on your psyche. But if it does work, you’ll be living the life of a banker -- buying things you want and piling up the dough. What a way to save! * * * PROOF ADVERTISING Final Mary invites you toFri., visit8/24/18 her at EverydayChanges DUE: 5:00 p.m..

A: Your electric bill is comprised of base energy usage charges as well as those for “demand” charges. Energy use costs should be offset as much as possible with the system you install, based on the available roof space, and the ability to install ground mounts and/or elevated ground mounts, or carports. Demand charges, on the other hand, are those additional costs for electricity during peak hours as determined by Southern California Edison. The goal for those charges is to ensure that your total electric consumption during those times stays below the volume that will trigger higher costs per watt. Be sure to choose a local, reputable company like Renova, who understands all these variables and will advise you as to your best choice with your best interests in mind, rather than try to “sell” you a system.

A year ago, a woman in New York City who shall remain nameless adopted two Chihuahuas knowing both dogs had a proclivity toward aggression. The dogs did not disappoint: They bark when she is and isn’t home, they snap at fellow residents in the elevator, and they’ve bitten random strangers on the street. In the last year, this woman has hired four different dog trainers, each drawing their own professional conclusions: -- Love the dogs, tell them they are good boys, and keep them in their crates. -- Ignore the bad behavior, and the dogs will eventually knock it off. -- The dogs are mad at you, and that is why they bite. -- Some dogs are just defective. Apparently, so are some dog trainers. Which is why it’s important to do the homework and know what you want before you sign on with a trainer for you and your dog. Yes: a trainer for you and your dog. A highly specialized trainer trains a Seeing Eye dog and teaches the owner how to effectively communicate with the dog in terms of the dog’s education. Another specialized trainer trains a K-9 cop and educates the officer to ensure dog and dog owner speak the same language. That is essentially what you want from your dog trainer: someone who can teach you and your dog to speak the same language. And that language is not the language of love. I recently spoke with a woman whose dog urinates in the house. She told me how much she loves her dog and that she was sure they could work it out. But the problem persisted despite her immense love, and she eventually called a dog trainer. This “trainer” concluded that her dog was angry with her because she had a roommate. The woman asked, “What do I do?” The trainer advised, “Get rid of the roommate.” My advice? Get rid of that dog trainer, and lose the notion that lots of love is the equivalent of

How to Choose an Adult Day Care Services Provider DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you offer any tips on choosing a good adult day care provider for an elderly parent? My 81-year-old father who recently moved in with me has dementia and needs attention during the day while I’m at work. --Needs Assistance Dear Needs: Adult day care services can be a great option for caregivers who work, or for those who just need a chance for more personal freedom during the day. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips to help you find and choose one. Adult Day Care The business of adult day care services has grown rapidly in recent years. According to the National Adult Day Services Association, there are upwards of 4,600 adult day centers across the U.S., the result of a 35 percent increase since 2002. These centers provide services to more than 260,000 participants and family caregivers, which is a whopping 63 percent increase over the last two decades.
Adult day care centers generally operate programs during normal business hours five days a week. However, some centers may offer services in the evenings and on weekends as well. Costs for care This will vary as well, usually between $25 to more than $100 per day (the national average is $75/day), depending on where you live. Unfortunately, in most cases original Medicare does not pay for adult day care, but some Medicare Advantage plans, and many long-term care insurance policies do. But most seniors or their families pay for adult day care out-of-pocket. If your dad is in a lower income bracket and can’t afford this, state Medicaid programs provide financial assistance if he meets eligibility requirements, and some states have PACE programs that provide financial aid. Contact your state Medicaid office (see Medicaid.gov) for more information. The VA even provides adult day care to eligible veterans enrolled in their Medical Benefits Package. See VA.gov/geriatrics to learn more.
Start by contacting your Area Agency on Aging (call 800-677-1116 to get your local number) for referrals to adult day care service programs in your area. You can also search the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) database at NADSA.org/ locator. Once you have a list of a few centers, call them to find out their eligibility criteria, if they offer the types of services your dad needs, if they are accepting new clients, their hours of operation, if they’re licensed and/ or registered with a state agency (this is not required in all states) and what they charge. After you identify a few good centers, go in for a personal, firsthand visit. Find out about the staffing ratio (at least one staff member for every six participants is recommended) and what kind of training they have. While you’re there, notice the cleanness and smell of the facility. Is it homey and inviting? Does the staff seem friendly and knowledgeable? Also be sure to taste the food -- and consider making an unannounced visit. To help you rate your visit, the NADSA offers a helpful checklist of questions to ask at NADSA.org – click on “Site Visit Checklist” under the “For Caregivers” tab. After your visit, be sure to check their references. Get names and phone numbers of at least two or three families who have used the center you are considering and call them for a report.
How to Choose Your first step in shopping for an adult day care center is to determine the kinds of services your dad needs, and what you need *** PROOF ADVERTISING As the name implies, adult day care Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, as a caregiver.
