• We say “Cat Scan,” but this procedure is really a CT scan, which is the acronym for a computerized tomography scan. It combines a series of X-rays taken from all different angles around the body. The machine then utilizes computer processing to create a cross-sectional picture of the inside of the body. Each image, or “slice,” shows a two-dimensional scan of the body part, and the computer stacks them one atop the other to create a detailed image. The CT scan can locate a tumor, a blood clot, internal injuries and bleeding, fractures, nodules and masses, among many other abnormalities.

• An MRI also provides images of the inside of the body, but by means of a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves. Magnetic Resonance Imaging realigns the body’s water molecules, which radio waves stimulate to produce signals that are used to create crosssectional images. It’s different from a CT scan, because it doesn’t use X-rays or radiation.

MRI’s are frequently used to diagnose brain and spinal cord ailments, but can also detect multiple sclerosis, stroke, tumors, abnormalities of the organs, and problems with bones and joints.

settlement in what is now Texas in 1731. The city still contains five 18th-century missions within its boundaries, one of which is the Alamo.

Although we think of the Alamo as a military by fortress, it was first a mission established in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero for education of the nearby native population.

In 1793, the church gave over control of the mission, and the area including some 30 adobe buildings became a self-governing community.

It was occupied by the military in the early 1800s, who renamed it • The Alamo was known in Spanish as simply “alamo,” probably because of a nearby grove of cottonwood trees, In 1836, it was the site of the Battle of the Alamo in the midst of the

• Every year on March 19, the “Miracle of the Swallows” occurs when migratory American cliff swallows finish a 6,000-mile flight from their winter home Goya, Argentina. The tiny birds, measuring just five inches in length, depart Goya every February 18 and arrive in California on what is now called St. Joseph’s Day. Every year on October 23rd, the massive flock of swallows circle the city and begin their 31-day flight back to Argentina.

• When a Spanish explorer sailed into the channel near present-day Santa Barbara in 1602, it happened to be on Saint Barbara’s feast day, a day honoring a Christian martyr who was beheaded by her father in 342 AD for refusing to renounce Christianity. Sebastian Vizcaino named the area Santa Barbara in commemoration.

• Santa Barbara has also been given the nickname “Hollywood of the North,” as hundreds of movies have been filmed there. It was also home to the world’s largest movie studio, Flying A Studios, between 1910 and 1922.

Think Twice Before Jumping on Husband’s Maximizing Bandwagon

I probably have written more than 100 columns about the obsession older adults have with “maximizing” their Social Security retirement benefits. I’m not going to get into that issue today. I personally don’t think it’s always the right move. But if you’re determined to employ these alleged strategies (which almost always mean delaying starting your benefits as long as possible), then go ahead and do it. And then hope you just live long enough to beat the system!

But today I’m going to deal with another side of the maximizing coin. This has to do with spousal benefits. It’s based on an email I got from a woman whose husband is trying to convince her to get on his maximizing bandwagon. And I’m going to give her some food for thought to help her decide if that is really what she wants to do. To see what I’m talking about, let’s start with the email.

Q: My husband is absolutely determined to maximize our Social Security benefits. That’s why he is going to wait until age 70 to file for his Social Security. His name is Frank, and he is currently 62 years old. My name is Ann, and I’m also 62. I have a much smaller benefit than Frank does. I want to file for my benefit now and switch to higher benefits on his record when he starts his at 70. But he is telling me that to get the highest possible benefit and maximize my Social Security payout, I should wait until my full retirement age to start my own and then switch to his when we’re 70. Will you please help me decide what to do?

A: The best way to help you figure this out is by looking at the numbers. Your husband gave me the benefit projections in a subsequent email.

Frank’s full retirement benefit is $3,010. His benefit at age 70 will be $3,973. He told me your full retirement rate would be $1,390. If you take benefits at 62, you’d get $1,002.

And before I go on, here’s an apology. Most

So, you’d keep getting your $1,390 retirement benefit and then you’d get $115 in spou- and start getting $1,002 per month then, and then sal benefits to take you up to the $1,505 rate you are $1,117 per month at 70, you’d start getting an additional $2,853 per month to take you up to his $3,970 due.

Now let’s look at what happens if you do level after he dies.

As a representative payee, you cannot combine the beneficiary’s Social Security payments with your own money or use them for your own needs. The bank account into which benefits are deposited should be fully owned by the beneficiary, with the payee listed as financial agent.

Some payees, generally those who do not live with the beneficiary, are required to submit annual reports to Social Security accounting for how benefits are used.

How to Get Help

If you believe your aunt may need a representative payee, call Social Security at 800-772-1213 and make an appointment to discuss the matter at her local office. Applying to serve as a payee usually requires a face-to-face interview.

Social Security may consider other evidence in deciding if a beneficiary needs a payee and selecting the person to fill the role, including doctors’ assessments and statements from relatives, friends and others in a position to give an informed opinion about the beneficiary’s situation.

You should also know that if you become your aunt’s representative payee you cannot collect a fee for doing so. However, some organizations that serve in the role do receive fees, paid out of the beneficiary’s Social Security or SSI payments.

Mexican general Santa Anna marched 1,500 troops into the area to reclaim Texas and a ten-day battle ensued against the resistence of only about 100 determined Texans. The outnumbered band of brave soldiers were completely wiped out, including frontiersmen Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Before falling into great disrepair, the chapel served as a grocery store. In 1905, the state of Texas purchased what was left of the compound and began with its preservation. The site receives about 2.5 million visitors annually • The city of San Fernando, California is completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. Other cities in the San Fernando Valley agreed to be annexed by Los Angeles in the 1910s in order to gain access to L.A.’s abundant water supply, which had been created by a newly opened aqueduct. San Fernando was able to reject the annexation because of their own plentiful groundwater supply. The city is named for the nearby mission that in turn was named for Saint Ferdinand of Spain, who was King during the 13th century. □
