Peshtigo Fire (from page one)

are burning near each other, their convection columns can be drawn together so violently that a “tornado” of fire is created. In extreme cases these whirlwinds can sometimes reach half a mile across with winds up to 200 mph. Superheated gasses kill everything, and firebrands are flung for miles in all directions.

no rain fell that entire summer. The previous winter had been very dry as well, with far less than the normal four feet of snowfall. Many local streams had gone dry and the swamps dried up, becoming highly combustible peat. • The use of fire was considered an essential tool. Loggers burned their slash; railroads burned their right-of-ways; settlers and farmers burned their fields and clearings. Because the summer had been so dry, many people held off their burning and waited for fall rains to lessen the fire danger. After a short rain on September 5th, some people began setting fires. Afterwards, a number of uncontrolled fires popped up as the rain stopped, and some began to spread.

• By 8:30 pm on October 8, there was a glow in the southwest and a low moaning growing louder. At 9:30 pm the wind began to blow hard. PANIC

raging wind several times. He survived. • A lumberjack had been nursing a friend who was bedridden with a fever. The man carried his sick friend outdoors, dug a trench, laid him in it, covered him with dirt, and then ran for the river. He never made it. The sick friend lived; the lumberjack died. • Logs floating in the river caught fire and burned to the water line. A cow came swimming downstream, and clinging to the horns was a five-year-old girl. Someone reached out and grabbed her. The bridge burned and collapsed, killing several who clung to it. Some who sought refuge in the river couldn’t swim and drowned. Some were badly injured by floating logs and gored by swimming cattle. But without the river, it is likely that few of Peshtigo’s residents would have survived at all.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt

Place all ingredients in a very large bowl and mix by hand or with an electric mixer just until incorporated. It will turn into a very wet and sticky dough. Leave the dough in the bowl on the countertop. Let it rise until double in size (a few hours). Once it has risen, spoon the sticky dough into four well-greased loaf pans. Leave pans on the counter and allow the dough to rise again until it reaches the top of each of the pans. Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown. About 10 minutes before it’s done (at about 35 minutes), brush with melted butter. Makes four loaves.

Owning an aggressive dog and doing nothing about it is like watching a cancer grow. That cancer turns out to be especially insidious when you add small children to the equation. You know on some level it’s not going to end well. And usually, it’s the dog that gets burned. Couples who at first are married without kids often get a dog to dote on and hone their caretaking skills. They know they want to have kids someday, but someday seems so very far away. Years go by, and the dog rarely if ever is exposed to children. He’s living large, the center of attention, and then one day his whole world flips upside down -- and he’s none too pleased. Here’s another scenario, sent to me from a dog owner looking for help: “We are looking to find a non-kid house for our 6-year-old dog. He has bitten two children in the past three months, one of which was my 1-yearold. Some say he is jealous, but we feel he has issues isolated to children. He came to us at three months of age and growled at a little girl that same week. “He had two years of obedience training with a retired K-9 cop who trains police dogs. My heart is breaking for my children and for my husband and I, as parting with him was the furthest thing from our minds. However, the next time it may be a face or worse. Please help. He does quite well with adults, and we fear he is miserable here with the kids.” A little shy of six years ago, this couple saw the beginnings of a tumor and let it go. They did the right thing in getting obedience training for the dog, but obedience training isn’t enough when dealing with an aggressive dog, and K-9 training is its own beast that has nothing to do with socializing a dog and curbing or eliminating aggression targeted toward children. Another scenario -- no doubt with the same ending -- stems from children not being taught how to handle a dog. Just as every person has a limit, every dog has a pain threshold. Parents often think Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

And these latest headlines won’t come true either. Why? Just go back to the trustee’s report. You’ll note it says the system faces insolvency “if no changes are made to the program by 2034.” And here is the deal. Congress will implement Social Security reforms long before we get to 2034. Anyone who knows Social Security history knows we’ve been down this road many times before. The last time was in 1983, when the system was just five years away from insolvency. Then-President Ronald Reagan formed the National Commission on Social Security Reform and Congress implemented many of their proposals (like increasing the full retirement age). So, sometime in the not-too-distant future, we’ll likely see another such Social Security reform commission. And how will they change Social Security? Listed below are eight commonly mentioned reforms. Four involve cutting benefits and four deal with raising revenues. Next to each is a number expressed as a percentage. The number indicates the portion of Social Security’s long-range deficit that would be eliminated if the proposal became law. Also listed is a brief argument for and against each proposal. So, why not see if you can “save Social Security”? If you can find solutions totaling 100% or more, you’ve kept the system solvent for future generations!

Social Security Will NOT Go Broke!

Here we go again. Another round of scare stories about the impending doom of Social Security. Headlines, such as this one in my local newspaper -- “ Social Security Moves Closer to Bankruptcy “ -- have many of my readers on edge. These kinds of headlines were prompted by a report released last week from the Social Security Board of Trustees that said the nation’s bedrock social insurance program is one year closer to insolvency. It said that if no changes are made to the program by 2034, the system would be unable to pay full benefits. That’s one year earlier than the 2035 date in last year’s PROPOSALS THAT WOULD REDUCE BENEFITS report. fully. Could I Have COPD and Not Know It? DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I have struggled with shortness of breath for several years now. I just thought I was getting old and overweight, but a friend recently told me about COPD. So, my question is could I have COPD and not know it? -- Huffing and Puffing Dear Huffing: COPD, or chronic Ad Proof: obstructive pulmonary disease, is a progresJohndisease Cuddihy Flags “A” Flying sive lung that- affects an estimated 30 million Americans, but about half of them Biz Card, BW, 26x rate are not even aware they5 have it. Symptoms can include an ongoing cough or a productive cough producing a lot of mucus, lack of energy and/or shortness of breath especially during physical activity, wheezing and chest tightness, blue lips or fingernails, or swelling in your feet, ankles or legs. Those most at risk are smokers or former smokers over age 40, and people who have had long-term exposure to other lung irritants like air pollution, chemical fumes and dust. There is also a rare genetic condition known as alpha-1-antitrypsin, or AAT deficiency that can increase the risks. If you’re repeatedly experiencing any of these symptoms, you need to get tested by your doctor. A simple breathing test called spirometry can tell if you have COPD, and if so, how severe it is. Early screening can also identify COPD before major loss of lung function occurs.

Quit smoking: If you do smoke, the best thing you can do to prevent more damage to your lungs is to simply quit. To get help, the National Cancer Institute offers a number of smoking cessation resources at SmokeFree.gov or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Or ask your doctor about prescription antismoking drugs that can help reduce your

nicotine craving. If you smoke marijuana for a medical condition, talk to your doctor about edible versions of these aids. Avoid air pollutants: Stay away from things that could irritate your lungs like dust, allergens and strong fumes. Also, to help improve your air quality at home, remove dustcollecting clutter and keep carpets clean; run the exhaust fan when using smelly cleaning products, bug sprays or paint, and keep windows closed when outdoor air pollution is high (see AirNow.gov for daily air-quality reports). Get vaccinated: The coronavirus and flu can cause serious problems for people who have COPD, so if you haven’t already done so, get vaccinated for COVID-19 and get a flu shot every fall to help avoid getting sick. Also ask your doctor about getting the pneumococcal immunizations for protection against pneumonia. Take prescribed medications: Bronchodilators (taken with an inhaler) are commonly used for COPD. They help relax the airway muscles to make breathing easier. Depending on how severe your condition, you may need a short-acting version only for when symptoms occur, or a long-acting prescription for daily use. Inhaled steroids may also help reduce inflammation and mucus and prevent flare-ups. For more information, visit the COPD Foundation at COPDfoundation.org or call the COPD information line at 866-316-2673.

headed for plowed ground, fields, or gardens. 21 women and children huddled under a single large quilt in a field. Their fathers stayed in the open, continually wetting down the blanket. All the men died. The women and children survived. • In September, Abraham Bush had started plowing circles of land around his house, forming a firebreak. His neighbors dismissed him as foolish. When the fire swept in, he and his family laid wet blankets on the roof of his home, continually soaking them as they dried. He was one of the few people who still had a house after the fire. Several dozen survivors joined him there on October 9. • Lovell Reed and his relatives fought to save their home until the battle became too desperate. Deciding that suicide was preferable to death by fire, he pulled out his pocketknife and plunged it twice into his chest, trying to hit his heart. Fortunately, his knowledge of anatomy was lacking and he was surprised to find himself still alive. He ran to a creek, rolled in mud, and ultimately survived.

• All that remained of Peshtigo was the iron portions of two locomotives, several brick kilns, the stone walls of the engine and boiler rooms of the woodenware factory, and one house made of still-green timbers that had just been built. □ (Related story on page 5)
