Secrets of Successful Budgeting

Years ago, I was a guest on “The Maury Everyday Povich Show,” something I’ve never been that CHEAPSKATE proud of. Back then, the show was kind of raunMary Hunt chy, and I justbynow realized that, some 20 years later, Maury is still at it.

I remember a few things about the show, like what I wore (What was I thinking?) and the nice production staff. Maury was very kind, too.

I also recall something Maury told me in response to the fact that I was there to talk about my book, “Debt-Proof Living,” and would be telling my story and talking about my journey out of credit-card debt. (He seemed genuinely relieved to be talking about something other than the typical show topics.)

Maury said that people are far more willing to come on the show to talk about sex, infidelity and all kinds of scurrilous and shocking behavior than to talk about money and debt. His typical guests are anxious to own up to the most outlandish and shocking kinds of lifestyles and behaviors. But their financial problems? No way.

People will talk about anything but money.

I’m not going to ask you to talk about your financial situation on national television but I do have this money-related question: Do you budget your income? If you say no, you may be surprised to learn that you are in the clear majority in this country. According to Gallup polls, 66% of Americans don’t have a budget and just 32% of Americans prepare a detailed written or computerized budget each month. If only the 66% knew how getting on a budget (or, as I prefer to call it, a spending plan) would change their lives.

One of the best things you can do to stay on track with money, even if you are not where you want to be and don’t know how to get started, is to create a plan for how you will spend your money before you spend it. That’s all a budget is: a rehearsal where you “pre-spend” your paycheck on paper before you part with even $1 of it. A budget where you create your own categories, “pre-spend” every dollar in every paycheck by assigning it a job to do and then follow carefully where the money goes is a budget that will push you to develop new habits and routines. ®

In no time, those changes will become your new normal.

What I call the envelope method is oldfashioned but a super simple way to manage a budget that really works well. Withdraw the cash assigned to your day-to-day spending on food, gasoline, clothing -- those expenses you do not pay through the mail. Yes, cash. Get some envelopes and label them accordingly.

Divide the cash between the envelopes, placing the money assigned to groceries into the envelope marked “Groceries,” gasoline into the one marked “Gas” and so on. Spend from these envelopes, not a debit card, credit card or checkbook.

See what I mean by this method being “old-fashioned?” Unlike your plastic, you cannot overspend with this method. When that envelope labeled “Food” or “Groceries” is empty, no more spending until it gets a refill next payday.

Whatever method you choose or create, if you stick to it, it will keep you on track to successful budgeting.

1. Separate dill leaves from stems; reserve separately. From lemons, finely grate 1/2 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1/4 cup juice into large bowl. Reserve rinds.

This easy, yet impressive, dessert can be made in advance and heated when you’re ready to serve it, making it the perfect choice when you’re hosting a large group. The splash of framboise in the pudding adds an elegant touch.

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing

3/4 cup good-quality cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature

2 cups sugar

1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped

1 tablespoon framboise liqueur (optional)

Vanilla ice cream, for serving

1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Lightly butter 2-quart shallow oval baking dish.

It’s the week before Christmas, and everyone’s humming a holiday tune. Here’s a dog lover’s take on some all-time favorites:

It Must Have Been the Mistletoe: No, this song isn’t about a dog that ate the mistletoe and spent Christmas Day with the vet. But it could be.

Mistletoe and poinsettias are toxic to dogs (and cats). The results of ingestion range from oral irritation to respiratory distress to gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, vomiting and the potential for dehydration that follows such symptoms. Mistletoe poisoning is rare, but if consumed in large quantities, it can be fatal.

Sleigh Ride: This one always gets me. I hear it and am compelled to remind parents everywhere that children should not be allowed to harness the family dog and have him drag them around the yard on a mock sled. It’s fun for the kids, not for the dog.

O Christmas Tree: Oh, where to begin? The traditional Christmas tree, with its lights and tinsel and delicate ornaments, is too much temptation for some canines. Whether slurping the sap-infested water meant for the tree, barking at flashing lights or pawing at shiny strands of tinsel and dangling glass balls, Christmas trees and dogs go together like mistletoe and former lovers.

Burn Little Candles: This sweet Chanukah song for kids also serves as a reminder for dog owners that flickering candles should never be left within reach of a wagging tail. Fire of any kind requires adult supervision. And remember to unplug those tree lights at night and when you aren’t home.

Jingle Bells, Silver Bells, Carol of the Bells: Bells, bells, bells! They’re enough to drive a pooch straight to the spiked eggnog. If your dog is shy, timid or nervous around noise, keep the bells to a minimum -- and not attached to his collar.

Vets Being Misled by Internet Come-ons

Not a week goes by when I don’t get emails from veterans who have been led to believe that they are missing out on some extra Social Security benefits allegedly payable to people who served in the military. Here is a very typical example of such an email.

“I read on the internet that as a veteran, I should be getting an extra $120 per month added to my Social Security check. They said all I have to do is take my DD-214 (military discharge papers) down to my local Social Security office and they will start paying me the extra money. I tried to do that, but nothing happened. What can you tell me about this?”

As is so often the case with these misleading internet come-ons, there is a tiny kernel of truth to the story. But then exaggerated claims and false information take over and things get blown way out of proportion.

Here are the facts in a nutshell: If you were in the military anytime up until 2001, the government may add a small amount of additional earnings to your Social Security record. And note that I am NOT talking about extra money added to your Social Security check. These are simply extra earnings incorporated into your Social Security earnings record -- the earnings record upon which your Social Security monthly benefit is based.

So, the good news is you get these extra earnings put on your Social Security account. But the bad new is these extra credits are relatively minimal and usually will have little or no effect on the eventual amount of your Social Security check.

And you also need to know that these extra earnings are automatically added to your Social Security account. There is nothing you need to do to get the extra credits.

Now let’s back up and give a little more information about military service and Social Security. If you served on active duty or active-duty training in the military service any time after 1956, you paid Social Security taxes on your earnings just like anyone else working at a job covered by Social Security. And since 1988, inactive duty in the armed forces reserves, such as weekend drills, has also been covered by Social Security. That’s the simple part.

What leads to all the confusion is that Congress decided to add extra earnings credits to the Social Security records of military personnel. And the amount of those credits varies depending on the time served.

If you were in the military between 1957 and 1977, the government adds $300 to your Social Security records for each calendar quarter in which you received active-duty basic pay.

From 1978 through 2001, the government adds an extra $100 to your Social Security account for each $300 you earned in basic pay, up to a maximum of $1,200 per year. There are times when these extra credits aren’t granted. For example, if you enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980, and didn’t complete your full tour of duty, you won’t get the extra credits. Check with the Social Security Administration for more exceptions.

Warfarin, which prevents the body from making some blood clotting proteins, is certainly a cause, but many older adults have this problem. Occasionally it can be a serious issue, so it is worth a discussion with your doctor, who may get some blood tests to help eliminate concern of leukemia and von Willebrand’s disease, among other diagnoses. Fortunately, it’s much more common for problems to be benign.

As people age, they do get drier, thinner skin, which can bruise more easily. If your bruises are found most often on the tops of your forearms, that’s a common place for senile purpura. “Senile,” in a medical context, just means older. The term “senile dementia,” a nonspecific term formerly used to mean Alzheimer’s disease, was sometimes shortened incorrectly to “senile.”

“Purpura” are dark, purple/brown marks on the skin.

If there is no specific cause for the bruising, and the appearance of the skin is consistent with senile purpura, then this advice may be helpful: Keeping the skin out of the sun can prevent future damage.

Don’t Split These Drugs

Some pills should never be split. Drugs that are time-released or long-lasting and tablets that contain a combination of drugs probably shouldn’t be split, because it’s difficult to ensure that a proper amount of active ingredients are evenly mixed in each half. Pills with a coating to protect your stomach, and pills that crumble easily or irritate your mouth shouldn’t be split either.

This includes chemotherapy drugs, anti-seizure medicines, birth control pills and capsules containing powders or gels.

Again, your doctor or pharmacist will know which drugs can and should not be split. If you’re taking a medicine that can be split, you’ll need to get a prescription from your doctor for twice the dosage you need. Then you can start splitting and saving, safely.

Q: I am enclosing a photo of a plastic talking Heinz alarm clock that I bought at auction over 20 years ago. The Heinz tomato figure is wearing a top hat, a monocle, a black tux jacket with grey pants, gloves, black bow tie, spats and is holding a cane, and he has green leaves on his head. It stands about nine inches tall, and he is in perfect condition. When the alarm begins, it says, “It’s time to get up, get up right away. Wake up before you play catsup all day. Remember Heinz is the thick rich one.”

I researched online for information on our lithograph, and I found the company sold roasted ground coffee and made advertising cards. How do we repair the small tears and preser ve the paper, which is ver y brittle?

Sixty miles south of the cannery lies the city of Blue Earth, Minnesota, where in 1978, a 55foot fiberglass statue of the Jolly Green Giant was erected. When the interstate was routed to bypass Blue Earth, a local radio station owner rallied local business owners to contribute to the construction of the four-ton figure to attract tourists to their community. It took just a week for the $50,000 in necessary funds to be raised.

About 10,000 travelers now visit the looming green statue each year for photo ops. □

Connection is specifically meant for the upper left arm and the side of the body. The intention of connection is to promote assistance in coiling the upper body in the backswing, and releasing the arm in the follow through.

Unfortunately, many golfers trying to stay “connected” have super glued the arm swing to the body. This over connection can restrict a free arm swing to the top and to the finish.
