• Because ants are not adept at crossing bodies of water, many remote islands were completely ant-free until humans began widespread trade carrying their goods by ship. The dumping of ballast was particularly effective at transporting ants, as was the exchange of certain trade goods, particularly lumber and agricultural products. Today there are over 50 species of ants in Hawaii, and none are native.

ANATOMY

• Although having no ears, ants detect sound by sensing vibrations in the ground through their legs. Likewise with no nose, they are able to detect smells with their antennae.

Holiday Oatmeal Cookies

These rich, crisp cookies are filled with a creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread (available at most supermarkets) and folded into a pretty pinwheel shape.

 Each serving: About 115 calories, 6g total fat (3g saturated), 15mg cholesterol, 95mg sodium, 16g carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 2g protein.

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1. On a sheet of waxed paper, stir flour, baking powder and salt. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat sugar with butter until creamy. At low speed, beat in egg and vanilla until mixed. Gradually beat in flour mixture just until combined.

2. Divide dough in half; shape each half into a disk.

Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm enough to roll. (Or, place dough in freezer 30 minutes.)

3. Preheat oven to 375 F. On floured surface with floured rolling pin, roll 1 disk of dough into 10-inch by 7 1/2-inch rectangle. With pastry wheel or knife, cut rectangle lengthwise into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 3 squares. Place squares, 1 inch apart, on large ungreased cookie sheet. With knife, make 1 1/2-inch cut from each corner toward center (do not cut all the way to center). Spoon 1/2 teaspoon chocolate-hazelnut spread in center of each square. Fold every other tip in to center to form pinwheel.

If your dog survived Christmas without an emergency trip to the vet or a gastrointestinal crisis, congratulations. You obviously took care to keep him away from the buffet, the chocolates and out of the garbage. But for all the festivities of Christmas, New Year’s Eve is the ultimate celebration for many.

The music is loud, the hours are late, the party is on.

If you are not hosting, leave your dog at home. Even the most social of dogs would rather be home in familiar surroundings than in a strange place full of strange people behaving strangely.

But what if the party’s at your place?

Home might not be so sweet for your dog if you are hosting that big New Year’s Eve bash. If your dog is shy or skittish or very young or very old, consider asking a friend, relative or neighbor to let your dog sleep over that night. He doesn’t need the stress.

When and How to File for Social Security Benefits

Hundreds of thousands of people will be filing for Social Security benefits in 2022. So today, I’m going to write a column about when and how to file for Social Security benefits.

But first, let me clarify the “when to file” part. As I’ve said over and over again in this column, I am not a financial planner. So, I really can’t advise you about the best time to start your Social Security benefits. That’s a decision only you can make, perhaps after consulting a real financial planner.

I’m just an old retired Social Security guy.

All I can do is explain Social Security rules to you to help you make that decision. (In my book “Social Security -- Simple and Smart,” I have a whole chapter devoted to this topic, so you might want to check it out. You can order the book online at Amazon.com.)

So, whether you make that decision on your own or with the help of my book or a financial planner, once you decide the month you want your benefits to start, many of you still want to know how far in advance you should file for those benefits. And that is the “when to file” advice I am offering in this column.

Let me begin by pointing something out.

Your Social Security eligibility date is always a month, not a day. For example, let’s say you were born January 28, 1956, and you want your benefits to start at your full retirement age. The full retirement age for people born in 1956 is 66 and 4 months. So, you will reach full retirement age on May 28, 2022. But the day you reach FRA isn’t really an issue. It’s the month that is key. In other words, your eligibility date isn’t May 28, 2022. It’s just May 2022.

The Social Security Administration recommends that you file three months before your eligibility month. So, if you wanted your benefits to start in May, you could start the ball rolling sometime in February 2022.

I used to advise people that there really was no need to rush because most Social Security retirement claims are very simple and the SSA processed them in literally a matter of days. So, in the past, I would have told people whose eligibility date is May that they could even wait until April if they wanted and there would be a very good chance their first check would show up on time. But the pandemic seems to have messed things up at the SSA. I’ve heard from so many readers who report to me about delays in either getting through to the SSA in the first place or in getting their benefits started. So, I guess my motto for the time being is this: better safe than sorry. So, file your Social Security claim three months before your first eligibility month.

But don’t let me scare you. Once you contact the SSA, you’ve established what they call a “protective filing date” and your rights to benefits are guaranteed from that month forward. For example, let’s say you wanted your benefits to start in January 2022. But for whatever reason, you didn’t get around to filing your claim until January

25, 2022. Even though your claim might not finish efits, in addition to proving your age and marriage, processing until sometime in February (or possibly you also need a death certificate. Dear Frank: Unfortunately, auto insurance rates went up significantly over the past year as the pandemic eased and more Americans got back on the roads. But there are plenty of ways to cut your premium. To find out what discounts may be available to you, contact your auto insurer and inquire about these options, and any others that may benefit you.

Low mileage discount:

Most insurers offer discounts to customers who drive limited miles each year, which is usually beneficial to retirees who drive less because they don’t commute to work every day.

These discounts usually kick in when your annual milage drops below 7,000 or 7,500, which is significantly less than the typical 12,000 miles most Americans drive a year.

Safe Driver Discounts:

In addition, many insurance providers also offer discounts to drivers who do not have any violations or accidents for three or more years.

Membership discounts:

Organizations that you belong to can also lower your insurance premium. Multi-Tasking Oak Bench

Q: This is an enclosed photo of my antique oak organ bench. It was purchased from an antiques store in the 1970s. Music can be stored in the hinged top and it is upholstered in velvet. It is in excellent condition.

I am interested in learning the age and histor y of my bench.

A: You have a Victorian Eastlake organ bench that was made around 1880. Most organ benches made in the Eastlake period of design were made of oak and decorated with both incised and applied carving.

Your bench would probably be worth $200 to $275.

A: Heinrich and Company made your dresser set. They have made porcelain in Selb, Bavaria, Germany since 1896. The dish with a lid that has a hole is a hair receiver. Ladies would place hair from their brushes in hair receivers.

Q: I am in possession of a set of 15 leather bound, gold trimmed books. It is the complete works of Robert Louis Stevenson. They were published by Peter F. Collier around the turn of the 20th centur y.

I am interested in finding their value and perhaps a purchaser.

A: Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish writer who was born in 1850 and died in 1894. His books are classics, and he was a prolific writer. Several of his most loved and read books include “Kidnapped,” “Treasure Island,” “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “A Child’s Garden of Verses.”
