It’s fascinating to ponder the fact that the small three-pound organ located between our ears controls just about everything in our entire body!

This week, Tidbits explores some of the wonders of this amazingly complex control center and presents some interesting facts that you probably never knew about the human brain.

• There are about 100 billion neurons, or nerve cells, in the brain, which gather and transmit signals. That’s about the same number of stars there are in our galaxy! It’s these nerve cells that compose what is often referred to as “gray matter.”

About 100 trillion connections exist among those cells, and not one neuron touches another. These connections are known as synapses, and they allow the information impulse to flow from one neuron to another. Each individual nerve cell can have up to 40,000 synapses.

experiencing any pain during the entire procedure. The achievement was widely reported and praised by the medical community.

• Unhappily for Morton, however widely his painfree procedure would be used, his own trouble had just begun. As soon as his discovery was publicized, fraudulent claimants emerged, the most notorious being that of Charles Jackson, who had earlier offered Morton only incidental advice he could have easily obtained elsewhere.

• Jackson’s threats of blackmail over trumpedup Morton indiscretions, along with lawsuits regarding financial rights, eventually forced Morton into granting Jackson public title of “co-discoverer,” as well as a hefty (though undeserved) share of the profits that would come thereafter.

• The fuss and fury that followed not only cost Morton a fortune in legal fees, but it also long delayed the international recognition that was rightly due to him alone.

• Sadly, Morton’s problems continued to mount, beginning with his efforts to patent his process.

This angered doctors, who would now be required to pay him licensing fees for the right to use his ether method in their practice. Then, due to physicians who were untrained in the proper application of Morton's anesthetic, several patients died under the knife. Their survivors in turn then sued the hapless inventor, holding him responsible for the deaths. In addition, Federal bureaucrats denied him the payment he was properly due for providing ether to the Navy Department.

• Dismayed, discouraged and now deeply in debt, Morton sold his dental practice, auctioned off his house, and moved to the countryside.

• By 1864, the Civil War had come to its most intense phase. Even though Morton’s health had begun to fail, his resolve spurred him to volunteer for the Union medical corps. His expertise as an anesthetist was literally lifesaving during the thousands of amputations that were conducted under horrific battlefield conditions.

• Throughout most of human history surgical procedures were performed at the cost of the patient suffering excruciating pain. It was only in 1846 that effective anesthesia came into use. Until then pain relief was chancy at best, consisting of shots of whiskey, doses of opium or drafts of wine laced with hemp seed. Sometimes partial unconsciousness was attained through hypnosis, or by inhaling either carbon dioxide or nitrous gas. All these methods were grossly inadequate, and the terror that surgical patients faced was stark.

• William Morton’s quest for an effective alternative began in 1843, when he arrived in Boston to set up a dental practice. In those days dentistry was quite primitive and pain was simply part of the procedure.

• Hoping to ease his patients’ suffering, Morton enrolled at Harvard College to train as a physician. His tuition allowed him access to the surgical arena at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a practice frequented by America’s top surgeons.

• As he continued his search for a pain reliever, Morton asked Charles Jackson, an eminent chemist, to write down the composition of sulfurous ether. Jackson gave him enough information to enable Morton to use ether in his experimentation. Morton tried it first on his pet spaniel, and then on himself.

• Exhilarated by his success, he advertised for more dental patients. Gift Cards Are Not Gifts What to give for Christmas when you don’t have time to shop, don’t want to put much thought into it and just need to check someone off your list? A gift card, of course.

At this point, I will resist the urge to list ® all the reasons that gift cards are not really gifts, why they are problematic for both the giver byso Mary Hunt and the recipient, or ask, if you’re going to give money, why not just give the money?

The truth is, consumers racked up more than $162 billion in gift card sales in 2022. I can’t stop the insanity, but I can shed a little light on how these things work and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Understand that no gift card is the same as cash. It’s not. It’s the same as store credit.

That’s what you are giving as a gift. The store gets to write the rules for how it will handle your recipient and its store credit. And should that store fall into financial trouble and close, that gift card will become instantly worthless even if it has no expiration date.

Did I mention that a gift card is not the same as cash?

Retailers are crazy about them. There’s a reason that retailers are so in love with gift cards: They get the money up front. And they know that lots of gift cards get lost, and some get forgotten and sit around for months or years. Americans have a collective $21 billion in unspent gift cards floating around out there. The average household sits on $300 in unused gift cards. Do you even know where yours are?

Unused gift cards represent free money for stores. Consumer Reports has estimated that a quarter of all gift cards go unredeemed for a year after purchase, and about seven percent never get used at all. Bankrate reports 47 percent of U.S. adults have at least one unused gift card. That's about every other household! It all adds up to an estimated $8 billion windfall annually for the retail industry.

Get smart. Buyers of gift cards and recipients should know that not all gift cards are created equal. Like to shop both at the store and online? Not all gift cards allow customers to buy and redeem gift cards both in the store and online.

Some retailers charge the buyer of a gift card a shipping fee to send a gift card to a recipient.

Many gift cards come with ridiculous restrictions should you need to make a return or exchange -- like you must have the used gift card in your hand for the store to credit back any refund. Oh, you threw it away because it was empty? Too bad, sucker.

Some cards have inactivity fees (now regulated by state laws and, again, not all state laws are created equal). Some retailers accept gift card redemptions at all locations, others at only select locations. Expiration dates are less of a problem these days. Few major retailers are allowed to do this anymore.

You do have some options for redeeming at least something for those cards you have somewhere in a drawer. Here are a few: Sell or exchange. If you have a gift card

you just know you aren’t going to use, sites like Raise, Gift Card Granny and Card Cash may take it and give you cash back, credit your PayPal account or give you an Amazon gift card at a set percentage of the original gift card’s value. Yes, you’ll be “losing” money by selling it at a discount, but if you weren’t going to use that gift card anyway (or you were going to use it on something you didn’t really want), it’s still a better deal.

Get a discount. You can buy gift cards on Raise from about 5% to 35%, depending on the store. Not bad if you compare that to leaving your card lying in a drawer someplace for your heirs to discover someday.

I can no longer resist the urge to ask: If you’re going to give money this holiday season, why not just give the money? Your recipient will get every single penny of that $20 bill to spend wherever he or she desires. Chances of that money getting lost or forgotten are slim-to-none, and you won’t be feeding that completely out of control retail monster known as the obscenely lucrative Gift Card Retail Industry.

There, I said it, and I feel so much better.

A: While “Barbie” generated more money

A: Alex O’Loughlin hasn’t acted in televi-

sion since CBS’s “Hawaii Five-0” ended after ten seasons in 2020. That’s quite a lengthy bout of continuous employment for an actor, so it’s possible O’Loughlin just wanted a break.

There’s also a chance that O’Loughlin, who is originally from Australia, could end up on the upcoming “NCIS: Sydney” series, which recently debuted on CBS. The cast for the first season has already been established, but in an interview with

longer before watching them at home. “Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, will be released on DVD as well as digitally through Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 21.

“Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, is already available to purchase and rent digitally through Prime Video, but at a hefty price. If you can wait a little longer, the movie will be available to stream on Max sometime this fall. (An official date hasn’t been announced yet.)

With fork, stir corn, egg and cheese into flour mixture just until blended (batter will be very stiff).

3. Place greased skillet in oven; preheat pan 5 minutes (to help brown bottom of corn bread). Remove pan from oven; spoon batter into skillet and spread evenly with small metal spatula.

4. Bake cornbread 15 to 20 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean and cornbread is just firm to the touch. Cut into 8 wedges and serve warm.  Each serving: About 290 calories, 9g total fat (3g saturated), 34mg cholesterol, 375mg sodium, 44g carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 7g protein.

Good advice, bad advice, utterly useless advice -- people love to pass it on.

In working with people and their dogs, I hear all kinds of “surefire” strategies for shaping canine behavior -- tactics passed down from generation to generation, neighbor to neighbor, stranger to stranger. And there’s little chance any of it ever worked for any of the people who so generously share it.

Recently I was talking with a woman who has an 11-week-old puppy who is nipping. She had something in the neighborhood of four family members and 20-something friends and acquaintances weighing in on what to do to curb this “behavioral problem.”

“He’s trying to talk to you.”

Really? What’s he trying to say? Please don’t listen to anything this person has to say.

“Tap your dog on the nose and say ‘bad bite.’”

“Bad bite”? I’m an English-speaking human being and I don’t even know what that means.

You might as well say “tuna on rye,” because it’s all the same to your pup. What’s worse, “tapping” your dog on the nose -- whether with your hand or the much-vaunted rolled-up newspaper -- has a better chance of making your dog hand-shy, fearful or even aggressive than it does of curing him of any “problem behaviors.”

“Turn your back on the dog.”

So he can nip that booty? If anybody has a clue about this one, please be in touch.

And one of my all-time favorites: “Ask him: ‘Why are you biting your mother?’”

Did she give birth to this pup? Is something going on that I’m not aware of? And is someone out there waiting for their dog to respond to this question?

Besides the senselessness, the cluelessness, the dangerousness and the flat-out lunacy of some of this stuff, the real problem with all of this advice is that it’s based on a fallacy.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Have you recovered from the latest time change? The one that sent the clocks back an hour, pushing us into darkness in what used to be the end of the afternoon?

Seasonal Affective Disorder, also called SAD, is a type of winter depression that can be found in the young as well as the old. The decrease in daylight can affect us, as can the lack of sunshine, which lowers our production of the mood regulator serotonin. It doesn’t help that not only is there little sunshine, but often it’s too cold or snowy to make a trek outdoors.

I realize that many of you who are readers of this column are fortunate enough to reside in, or at least retreat to the warm and sunny southern states as "snowbirds" this time of year.

So even if the SAD disorder doesn't apply to you, it should make you all the more appreciative of the sunny warmth you're enjoying.

SAD symptoms can look a lot like depression but only appear in the winter. Typical signs are lack of energy, restlessness, lack of

interest in things we used to enjoy, feeling sad, different sleep patterns and changes in appetite.

A short visit with your physician to ask for a test to learn your vitamin D level might be in order. If the answer is yes, your vitamin D level is low, ask your physician how it can be fixed.

Sometimes they’ll suggest a light therapy box, a gadget that can increase your exposure to light.

If so, ask for the name of a specific brand as well as how long and how often you should use it.

Don’t try to solve the problem with overthe-counter vitamin D supplements without your physician instructing you about how much to take. Too much of it can be harmful.

To beat SAD, sometimes it only takes a few changes to how you spend your days. Try to establish a routine of talking to friends or family every day that you can’t get out. Get a little exercise (try YouTube videos for senior exercise).

Vow to eat better, even if it means just an additional piece of fruit every day.

And if you can afford it, plan a trip to sunny Florida or Southern California for a refreshing getaway. Every step you take can have a positive impact on your mental state.

So the objective isn’t to punish the dog or to deter the undeterrable. Your job as the pup’s guardian and as someone who loves this little creature is to provide him with something that will offer even more relief than your fingers or the leg of that dining chair.

Ice chips and frozen treats help. But one of the most effective tools costs little to nothing and works beautifully: the frozen washcloth.

If you have a teething puppy in the house, wet a handful of washcloths and put them in the freezer. When your pup starts nipping -- and he will because it’s perfectly natural -- give him a frozen washcloth to chew on. The cold will feel good against his sore gums as it works as a numbing agent.

If only there were something equally effective at silencing the passers-on of bad advice.

What’s That Check For? A couple weeks ago, a one-time check for $90 from the Social Security Administration showed up in my checking account. I wasn’t totally sure what that was all about, but I had a pretty good idea. Today, I got a letter from the SSA telling me all about the check, and it turned out my guess was right. I’ll share more about that mystery check in a minute. But first I want to explain to my readers why I got a check first and an explanation a couple weeks later.

And by the way, I’m not alone. I’ve received quite a few emails from readers telling me that an odd amount of money from Social Security landed in their bank accounts and they were wondering what it was all about. And I told them to just be patient and wait a week or two and they’d get an explanatory letter from the SSA. Why does it happen that way? Why does a letter of explanation come so many days late?

It’s really not a great mystery. And it’s not “typical government incompetence,” as one reader told me. It’s simply that electronic fund transfers can happen almost instantaneously, whereas a physical letter takes a while to prepare and mail. In other words, once the SSA figured I was due some extra money, they pushed a few buttons and a check was on its way to my bank account. And then after those buttons were pushed, someone at the SSA had to prepare a letter explaining what was going on, then that letter had to go through the SSA’s mailroom and then to the U.S. Postal Service and finally to my mailbox. And all of that took about 10 days or so.

Over the years, some readers have remarked to me that the SSA should time the delivery of the check to coincide with the delivery of the letter. I remember many years ago, while I still worked for the SSA, being involved in meetings where that issue was discussed. And SSA officials decided that it was best to get the money out to people as fast as possible (it’s their money, after all) and live with the consequences of a delayed letter of explanation.

So anyway, what was my extra check for?

Well, that’s what the rest of this column is all about.

I got a little boost in my Social Security because my 2022 earnings were finally factored into my benefit formula and it turned out those earnings caused a small increase in my monthly benefit. My monthly benefit went up by about $10, and the $90 check was paying me that extra 10 bucks retroactively to January 2023.

Some seniors who continue working after they go on Social Security get an increase in their benefits, and some don’t. To understand whether the earnings you have and the taxes you pay after you start getting Social Security will increase your benefits, you have to understand how Social Security retirement benefits are figured in the first place.

Simply stated, your Social Security retirement benefit is based on your average monthly income, indexed for inflation, using a 35-year base of earnings. So, when you initially filed for benefits, the Social Security Administration looked at your entire earnings history. Then they adjusted each year of earnings for inflation. The inflation adjustment factor depends on your year of birth and var-

Mail-Order Meds Lose Efficacy if They’re Not Stored Properly DEAR DR. ROACH: I am concerned, and have been for some time, about whether my prescriptions that arrive by mail are compromised, since they sit in vehicles with the sun beating through the windows, heating them up.

Also, the plastic bottles in which the prescriptions are stored give off toxic emissions as they “broil” in the sun. The instructions that come with some of the meds warn about heat as well.

My pharmacist told me that heat does affect a medication’s effectiveness negatively. So, if this is true, millions of us are taking important medications that are basically not doing the job. After all, the meds that arrive at pharmacies come in hot vehicles, too. What’s your take? -- J.Z. ANSWER: All medicines should be stored in a cool, dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Studies have proven that medicines sent by mail order can indeed get out of their published temperature range. While this happens most often in mailboxes, I understand your point about medications “broiling” in hot temperatures during the shipment itself.

Liquid medicines, hormones and nitroglycerin are among the most sensitive. Medicines that need to be dosed exactly, such as transplant rejection medicines, biologicals, and seizure medicines, are also particularly likely to cause problems if they are damaged during shipping. Although some medicines are supposed to be shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, this isn’t always the case.

I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. Many states have requirements about customers using retail pharmacies. If that’s not the case for you, try to make sure that the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it.

If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (you can ask your pharmacist about others), request that your mail-order pharmacy sends it in special packaging during warm weather. You might also consider having them shipped to a place where they will be put into a temperature-controlled environment right away. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since I developed bronchiectasis, I have lost 15 pounds. I can’t seem to get an answer as to why this disease would result in weight loss. Can you shed any light on this? -- E.K.G. ANSWER: Bronchiectasis is a lung condition similar to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It develops after a lung infection occurs in a person who is at risk due to a number of possible underlying conditions.

Weight loss with chronic lung disease, like COPD and bronchiectasis, is common. There

are many possible reasons. One is that breathing can be hard work! It takes extra energy (as much as ten times more energy) to breathe with chronic lung disease. Some medications used for bronchiectasis promote weight loss, often through poor appetite. Bronchiectasis is an inflammatory condition, so this can also lead to appetite suppression.

Although many healthy people want to lose weight, losing weight with chronic lung disease is a bad sign and a reason to make some dietary changes. I’ve often advocated for nuts and nut butters; the healthy fat in them contains a lot of calories, and fat is easier on your lungs, since it makes less CO2 than protein or car-

bohydrates. You also need to maintain muscle strength.

Finally, a new serious diagnosis always leads to a change in how we think of our bodies, so depression (which often exacerbates weight loss) is not uncommon. Your doctor or a mental health professional can help.

VETERANS  POST 

Veterans Legacy Memorial Expanded This is certainly welcome news: The Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) website now contains the names of ten million veterans who are buried across the country. Those locations include the national cemeteries, DOD cemeteries, National Park Service national cemeteries, and now civilian and non-VA cemeteries are also included.

Another piece of good news: Earlier this year the site indicated that only veterans would be listed, not their spouses. However, I’ve just now found the mother of a good friend; she is buried with her veteran husband at Arlington National.

The Veterans Legacy Memorial website (www.vlm.cem.va.gov) is quite an undertaking.

Each veteran has an individual page that includes a bio with branch of service, dates of birth and death, war period, rank, decorations and more. And in this digital age, family and friends can upload stories, photos and historical documents.

Not all cemeteries and veterans have been covered yet. I’m unable to find one uncle -- so far I’ve found the rest of my veteran relatives: my grandfather, father, mother and another uncle -perhaps because he’s in a very small cemetery in a very rural area. I have hope that he’ll eventually be included as well.

Do you qualify for burial in a national veterans cemetery? You can apply for pre-need approval, if you wish. (Go to va.gov/burials-memorials and click on “Eligibility.”) You’ll need several documents to send with your application (VA Form 4010007), such as DD-214. Chose a VA national cemetery. Call 800-535-1117 if you need help with the paperwork.

Then, with the future comfort of your family and friends in mind, go the extra mile and gather up a few things you’d like to see on your eventual memorial page, perhaps a special photo or a story from your past. How a Health Savings Account Can Boost Your Retirement Savings DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’m interested in learning how contributing to a health savings account can help boost my retirement savings. I've heard that this can be a beneficial plan, but I don't know anything about how it works. I'm hoping you can shed some light on this for me.

-- Almost 60 Dear Almost: A health savings account, or HSA, is a fantastic financial tool that can help you build up a tax-free stash of money for medical expenses now and after you retire. But to qualify, you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health insurance plan. Here’s an overview of how they work and how you can open one.

HSA Rules HSAs have become very popular over the past few years as the cost of health care continues to skyrocket, and because more and more Americans have high-deductible health plans.

The great benefit of a HSA is the triple tax advantage that it offers: 1) Your HSA contributions can be deducted pretax from your paycheck, lowering your taxable income; 2) the money in the account grows tax-free; and 3) if you use the money for eligible medical expenses, withdrawals are tax-free. And another advantage is that if you change jobs, the HSA moves with you.

To qualify, you must have a health insurance policy with a deductible of at least $1,500 for an individual or $3,000 for a family in 2023. In 2024, the deductible rises to $1,600/individual or $3,200/family.

This year, you can contribute up to $3,850 if you have single health insurance coverage, or up to $7,750 for family coverage. Next year (2024) you can contribute significantly more – up to $4,150 for single coverage or up to $8,300 for family coverage. And people age 55 and older can put away an extra $1,000 each year. But you cannot make contributions after you sign up for Medicare.

The money can be used for out-ofpocket medical expenses, including deductibles, co-payments, Medicare premiums, prescription drugs, vision and dental care and other expenses (see IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/ p502.pdf, page 5, for a complete list) either now or when you retire for yourself and your spouse as well as your tax dependents.

Unlike a flexible spending account, an HSA doesn’t require you to use the money by the end of the year. Rather, HSA funds roll over year to year and continue to grow tax-free in your HSA account for later use.

In fact, you’ll get a bigger tax benefit if you use other cash for current medical expenses and keep the HSA money growing for the long term. Be sure to hold on to your receipts for medical expenses after you open your HSA, even if you pay those bills with cash, so you can claim the expenses later.

There’s no time limit for withdrawing the money tax-free for eligible medical expenses you incurred any time after you opened the account.

But be aware that if you do use your HSA funds for non-medical expenses, you’ll be required to pay taxes on the withdrawal, plus a 20 percent penalty. The penalty, however, is waived for those 65 and older, but you’ll still pay ordinary income tax on withdraws not used for eligible expenses.

Marked on the bottom are the word “Germany” and number “168.” It is in perfect condition.
