WELCOME
Welcome to the conferring of degrees for the Class of 2024 graduates of Valparaiso University. Today, we celebrate our graduates and wish them well as they continue their journeys. Their relationship with Valpo does not end here. We hope it has just begun. This University will forever be a place they may call home, a place where memories were formed,
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
There is no reserved seating (except for graduates and faculty). Ushers will fill all seats as people enter. Those with hearing impairments who would appreciate being seated in an area where there is an interpreter should notify an usher. Guests who require special seating accommodations should also notify an usher. A professional photographer will take a photo of all candidates as they receive their diploma cases, and these photos will be available to graduates and parents. These photos will be emailed directly to graduates approximately two weeks after the ceremony. As a courtesy to others in attendance, University marshals will ask members

and where lifelong relationships were built. Students’ time here is relatively short. Yet, their impact is one that lasts for generations. So today, we do not say goodbye. Instead, we pray that our graduates receive many blessings, and we look forward to a lifetime of meaningful engagement.
ABOUT VA LPARAISO UNIVERSITY
In Luce Tua Videmus Lucem: “In Thy Light We See Light.” Scholarship, freedom, faith, and service — the ideals of Valparaiso University’s mission — are embedded in its motto. The University’s Lutheran tradition and character are reflected in these ideals. The Valparaiso Male and Female College was founded by Methodists in 1859 as an institution pioneering co-education. It was known as the Northern Indiana Normal School for three decades under the enterprising educator Henry Baker Brown until it officially became Valparaiso University. After decades of
expansion, the University experienced financial hardship as the United States entered World War I. The Lutheran University Association, a group of clergy and church laity, purchased it in 1925, ushering in the modern era of Valpo’s history as an independent Lutheran University. Today, the sprawling campus spans nearly 300 acres. Valpo fosters in its students a lifelong commitment to seek truth, gain knowledge, and grow in wisdom. An engaging, accomplished community of faculty and staff prepares Valpo graduates to ignite their passion and radiate their purpose in the world.
of the audience who approach the platform or main floor during this time to return to their seats. Those who need special assistance during the program may speak to an usher. Medical professionals are on duty to provide emergency aid if needed. At the close of the program, the audience is asked to remain in their seats until after the recession of graduates, faculty, and members of the administration is completed. Valparaiso University is a tobacco-free campus. The use of tobacco products on University property is prohibited except in an enclosed personal vehicle.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE
On formal University occasions, the faculty appears in attire that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The usual attire of the time, for both clergy and lay people, was a long gown, which was necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings of the day. Scholars, generally members of church orders, also wore such robes as well as hoods to protect their shaved heads. The hood was sometimes used to collect alms from more affluent members of the community. As additional universities were founded, distinctive forms of gowns and hoods were adopted by their faculties. Variations indicated various ranks within an institution. When caps and hats later became fashionable, the hood became merely ornamental, draped over the shoulders and down the back. The use of academic attire in the United States has been continuous since colonial days. A uniform system was adopted by most institutions of higher learning near the end of the 19th century by an intercollegiate commission. This code of dress, reviewed and revised several times since its adoption, has become standard for most American colleges and universities. The most distinctive feature of American academic dress is the hood, which indicates by its color and design its wearer’s degree and the institution that conferred the degree. The hood is lined with the color of the college or university granting the degree (the holder of a degree granted by Valparaiso University wears a hood lined in brown and gold) and is faced with a color indicating the subject of specialization. Here is a partial list of colors associated with the various disciplines:
Arts, Letters, Humanities White
Business Administration Drab
Economics Copper
Education Light Blue
Engineering Orange
Fine Arts Brown
Journalism Crimson
Law Purple
Library Science Lemon Yellow
Music Pink
Nursing Apricot
Oratory, Speech Silver Gray
Philosophy Dark Blue
Physician Assistant Kelly Green
Physical Education Sage Green
Science Gold
Social Work Citron
Theology Scarlet
The academic cap was a later development in academic attire. It was first conferred as a symbol of a master’s degree. Some caps were stiff, some soft, some square, some round with a tuft in the center. The tassel of today is an elaboration of the tuft. Round caps are still used at some institutions. The mortarboard style of cap comes to us from Oxford University. The cap is usually black, like the gown, and its tassel is either black or in the color indicated above for a degree in a particular field. Gold tassels are worn by holders of doctoral degrees and by heads of institutions. Some members of Valparaiso University’s faculty hold degrees from universities in this country or abroad that do not follow the standard American pattern. Cords of various colors over the left shoulder are members of honor societies representing the different disciplines. Red, white, and blue cords are worn by United States of America active military and veterans.
SYMBOLS
Two symbols stand out in all academic ceremonies: the mace and the presidential medallion. The mace, the symbol of authority in the University, is carried in the academic procession in front of the president of the University by the president’s marshal. On the mace are four symbols: the University seal, the chi rho (an ancient symbol of Jesus Christ), the Luther coat of arms (symbolizing the Lutheran affiliation of the University), and the seal of the State of Indiana. Other small symbols on the mace depict various academic disciplines of the University and various Christian virtues. The presidential medallion is worn by the president
of the University at all official University ceremonies. On one side is the seal of Valparaiso University, and on the other side is inscribed, “Official President’s Medal.” The president of the University wears a specially designed brown robe with four chevrons on the sleeve, signifying the rank of president of an academic institution. The chevrons and front panels are brown velvet and are outlined in gold cording reflective of the University’s colors. Embroidered on each front panel is the seal of the University. The president’s hood is lined with brown and gold.
José D. Padilla, J.D.
PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
On December 2, 2020, José D. Padilla, J.D., was announced as Valparaiso University’s 19th president. A dynamic thinker and natural leader, President Padilla brings many skills, experiences, and accomplishments in higher education that are ideally suited to the University’s needs today and in the future.
President Padilla is a strong believer in service and regularly puts his faith into action. He combines service and faith with wisdom to ensure that Valpo graduates are learned and spiritual people who become force multipliers in their professions and communities.
President Padilla joined Valpo as the culmination of a long and successful career in higher education. He served as vice president, university counsel, and secretary of the University of Colorado System. Previously, he served 15 years in senior leadership roles at DePaul University in Chicago, the most recent as vice president, general counsel, and secretary.
He began his career practicing law, but found his vocation to serve his country, fellow citizens, and university students through his roles in higher education. He also performed public service in Washington, D.C. He served as a legislative assistant to United States Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX) and as a senior political appointee in the administration of President Bill Clinton.
President Padilla received his bachelor of education in elementary education from The University of Toledo and his juris doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.
President Padilla’s professional affiliations include the D.C. Bar Association, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and Campus Compact. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Valley Athletic Conference.
He was named to the Notable General Counsels list by Crain’s Chicago Business in 2019, which recognized those who made a significant impact within the Chicago business community. President Padilla was also included in the “Who Is Who in Hispanic Chicago” list of Negocios Now in 2016, 2017, and 2019. In 2010, he was named one of 100 influential Hispanics in Hispanic Business magazine.
President Padilla was born in Augsburg, Germany, on a U.S. Army base. He was raised in Toledo, Ohio. He met his wife, Hilda, at a fundraiser in Chicago, and the two were married in 1986. Hilda is a real estate broker and entrepreneur. They have two grown children, Jacob and Camille. In his free time, President Padilla enjoys working out, writing, reading, fly fishing, watching historical shows and movies, and spending time with his dog, Coach.
