Whether you are wanting to expand your teaching repertoire, teach abroad, prepare for doctorate level work, become a professional writer, or refine your language and communication skills, the master of arts in English studies and communication will help take you there.

PERSONALIZED PROGRAM AT YOUR PACE

At Valpo, you’ll have the flexibility to pursue your education at whatever pace and format fits you best. As part of our master of arts in English studies and communications program: • S tudents interact with fellow graduate students and others in Valparaiso University’s vibrant international community. • S tudents may overlap credits toward an optional certificate in TESOL. (For Indiana teachers with initial licensure, a teacher certification program in TESOL is also an option.) • S tudents gain practical experience through a hands-on practicum in teaching, writing, or related fields such as curriculum development. • S tudents may pursue a thesis as an alternative to the practicum. • S tudents may take classes as full-time or part-time students with select courses available in the evenings and during the summer.

ADMISSION CHECKLIST ■ Valparaiso University graduate application (online) ■ Certified bachelor’s degree transcript, plus transcripts for all other degrees earned and/or coursework completed ■ Two letters of recommendation ■ A reflective essay indicating your anticipated career goals and reasons for undertaking graduate study in the particular program you are applying for at Valpo

* ENGL 685 is required of all ESC students who are not completing an optional thesis. Three credits total are required if not also completing the practicum for a TESOL certificate. One credit of ENGL 684 may be substituted for one credit of ENGL 685 for students pursuing a TESOL certificate.

ESC students must meet general graduate admission requirements, plus have completed an undergraduate or graduate major or minor in English.

ELECTIVES 12 CR. Any 500- or 600-level courses in English or other electives as approved 12 Cr.

Earning my master of English studies and communication allowed me the opportunity to customize my education in order to gain a larger variety of knowledge and skills. I was able to strike a balance between the English and communication fields, opening up multiple job opportunities which would not have been available without the wide array of skills I gained.
