Computer Science
COMPUTER SCIENCE MAKES OUR MODERN WORLD WORK
Computer science thinks about problems in terms of the logical operations machines can perform. Put more informally, computer science considers how to make machines do things. In our computer science program, you’ll learn modern programming languages and environments, algorithms, professional practices, and computational reasoning.
Valparaiso University’s flexible undergraduate computer science major offers B.S. and B.A. options, as well as a minor. The University also offers two master of science programs in cyber security and information technology, and three graduate certificates in information technology.
THE VALPO ADVANTAGE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
Faculty mentoring and hands-on experience elevate your computer science education at Valpo. Many larger state schools have teaching assistants leading classes, and students have to wait until their junior year to take an intro to software course. But at Valpo, faculty members work one-on-one with computer science majors to ensure they have a solid understanding of core principles. This includes research, independent studies, and advising. And our computer science students take the intro to software course in their sophomore year, which means you’ll be ready for internships earlier than your peers at large state schools. And the one-on-one mentorship doesn’t end when you graduate. The relationships you form with your professors during your college career will continue to grow and support you throughout your professional career. From professional networking to working through career questions, Valpo faculty will remain by your side. Our small class sizes and 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensure our professors have the capacity to be a mentor for their students, now and in the future.
CAREER PATHS
Graduates of the computer science program often go on to careers as:
• Network architects
• Programmers and software developers
• Systems analysts
• Database administrators
• Information security analysts
• Network and computer systems administrators
• Web developers
Computing has links to almost every profession and academic field, so entering the job market with computing knowledge is a plus. And, the computational problem-solving skills you learn in this major also translate to many other fields. Valpo grads have gone on to apply their computational problem-solving skills to a number of diverse fields including:
• Health care/health insurance
• Petroleum services
• Specialist software (including video game creation)
• Internet service providers
• Primary metals manufacturing
VALPO EARLY ENTRY
In today’s global market, a graduate degree is expected in many specialized career fields. Valpo undergraduates have the option to begin graduate studies as an undergraduate by applying for the early entry program for graduate study. This program can allow for completion of an M.S. degree in significantly less time and cost than the traditional route. Interested students apply during their junior year, which will allow those admitted to enroll in graduatelevel courses senior year. Early entry credits earned can apply to both undergraduate and graduate Valpo degrees.
JOB PREP
You’ll be ready for the workforce with résumé coaching and internship/interview prep — starting in your junior year. Our faculty can help you fine tune your résumé because they know what employers are looking for, from résumé keywords to experience with toolchains.
