TIPS FOR APPLYING TO A GRADUATE PROGRAM

1. Do your research

Graduate applications require some planning and preparation. Be sure to research early so you have a strong grasp on application deadlines and which items need to be submitted along with your application. Take some time to ensure the program you’re considering aligns with your academic and career goals.

2. Craft your statement of purpose

Write a compelling and authentic personal statement that showcases your passion for the field, relevant experience, skills, and how the program aligns with your career aspirations. This is your opportunity to tell the admission committee who you are and why you’d be a great fit for the program.

3. Ace standardized tests

Make sure you know which standardized tests are required such as the GRE or GMAT. Invest time in preparing for these exams to ensure a competitive score. If testing is needed, be sure to plan your test dates well before the application deadline to ensure that your scores will be delivered on time.

4. Secure letters of recommendation

Letters of recommendation are often required when applying to a graduate program. Be sure to select people who know you well, such as professors, professional colleagues, supervisors, or mentors so they can provide detailed insights into your capabilities. Be sure to request letters early in the process to give recommenders plenty of time to complete their letters.

5. Submit your transcripts

Request and send official, final transcripts from all previously attended institutions. Keep in mind that international students may require transcript and credential evaluation from an outside institution, which may require additional time. Unofficial transcripts may be used for an informal application review, but applications are not considered complete until official, final transcripts are received.

6. Network and connect

Don’t hesitate to reach out to an admission specialist when you’re feeling stuck or have questions. Consider reaching out to students, alumni, or professors in your program of interest. Attend information sessions, webinars, or events to gain insight and build connections. Networking can provide information and support throughout the application process.
