PARK INFORMATION registration fees & refunds

REGISTER EARLY

It is important to register early to ensure your place in our programs. If a program is full, we can place you on the wait list and contact you if there are cancellations or a spot has opened up for that program. Payment is not required until we place you in that program.

PHOTOGRAPH OR VIDEOTAPE

Park staff and volunteers may photograph or videotape participants enrolled in programs and events or enjoying park facilities. These photos are for department use only and may be used in department publications or media promotions. alcohol in parks

Alcohol in City parks is discouraged. For your safety and the safety of others please refrain from drinking and driving.

dogs in parks

Be considerate of others enjoying the parks. Dogs are allowed in the parks, but they must be on a leash and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them. Please leash and scoop. Be sure to become a member at the ValPAWraiso Dog Park for off-leash fun, more information on page 31.

The Park Board has adopted a policy of resident discount user fees at select facilities and designated programs. This policy apportions an equalized higher fee to our non-resident participants. The higher fee contributes to the overall operations financing of the Park Department on an equitable basis with Valparaiso City residents who contribute by paying property taxes.

Can you believe ValPlayso: the Next Generation turned 10 years old in 2024? This past fall ValPlayso received some needed equipment upgrades and replacement of the rubber play surfaces. The Flounder and Friends Skatepark is up and running and a very popular spot. With a generous gift from a benefactor, the outdoor driving range facility at Creekside Golf Course recently received some badly needed upgrades. This included the replacement of the covered hitting areas with the addition of heaters.

Over the next 18 to 24 months, we will be focusing on completing upgrades to some of our wonderful Legacy Parks. Notably our oldest park, Kirchhoff Park, will be receiving a major face lift. You will see noticeable improvements to many of our other parks as well.

I am honored to serve on the Park Board and as your Board President. As a board, we remain committed to preserving and enhancing our treasured parks. These are exciting times for our parks. We have many things to offer this year, and there is something for everyone! For information on our programs and ways you can get involved with the parks, please look through our activity guide, check us out on Facebook or visit our website at www.valpoparks.org. Hope to see you at one of our beautiful locations soon!

SKATEPARK

Valpo Parks and Valpo Parks Foundation celebrated the grand opening of Flounder & Friends Skatepark on November 9, 2023. This newest park is 15,000 square feet and features a bowl in the shape of a fish, a musical manual pad, mini-ramp, a 6 ft high vert wall and other exciting street features.

Flounder & Friends Skatepark is open year round, weather permitting. The lights on the park enable parkgoers to enjoy the park for longer hours in the fall and winter months. Find the seasonal skate park hours on the website.

skate hours history one-of-a-kind elements

In 1997, Dug Ketterman led the planning of the first Flounder Skatepark, dedicated to his friend Ray “Flounder” Wampler. After 24 years, the City of Valparaiso sought Ketterman's expertise to rebuild. Through his business, DugOut Design Studio, they created the Flounder & Friends Skatepark, a tribute blending the original's spirit with a design inclusive of all skill levels. The skatepark not only honors Wampler's legacy but also provides a safe haven for skateboarders to thrive and progress.

See page 15 for details on skateboarding classes

FLOUNDER BOWL

The Flounder Bowl serves as the origin or “heart" of the skatepark. The coping line shape of the bowl is inspired by the original green Flounder skatepark icon. The bowl features several varying radius pockets with steel coping, as well as two tail fin extensions at the tail end of the bowl. These pockets are great for getting extra speed in and out of the bowl and are also perfect for slasher grinds on the hand-formed pool coping edges.

MANUAL PAD

In honor of Ray “Flounder” Wampler, this manual pad plays the song ‘Bro Hymn’ by Pennywise, the song that was played at Ray’s funeral. In order to ‘unlock’ the song, you need to land a manual (or roll on your front/back wheels only) across the whole pad. The saw-cuts in the concrete are spaced to match the beat and essence of ‘Bro Hymn’.

The standard mini ramp is a great place to learn all of your basic transition grinds and airs. This mini has a total of 44ft of flat coping split into two heights, 4ft and 5ft deep allowing you to progress your skills quickly. The mini ramp is bowled on both ends, providing 45 degree and 90 degree corners in the deep end and two hips with a hump bump which opens up to a flowy shallow end pocket.
