Introduction to the Neighborhood Toolkit
about the neighborhood toolkit
In January 2019, the City of Valparaiso launched its first Neighborhood Toolkit as a resource for neighborhood groups. Since then, new groups have formed, programs have been added and existing groups celebrated success using our tips. The 2021 Neighborhood Toolkit is an updated guide as you continue to engage your neighborhood.

Now more than ever, connections with our neighbors are critical. This past year, in place of regular block parties and monthly meetings, neighborhood groups hosted socially distant luminary walks, scavenger hunts, sidewalk art competitions and more in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We know that neighborhood volunteers continue to play a key role in checking in on our seniors, volunteering support and creatively spreading joy throughout the city.
Our 2021 Neighborhood Toolkit aims to inspire, educate and support neighborhood groups of all sizes. The content has been updated to reflect our current climate, adding virtual meeting tips and more. We also have new programs and services to share, including quarterly Neighborhood Workshops and a Good Neighbor Recognition Program.
The Neighborhood Toolkit will be updated regularly through the City’s Community Engagement Department. This department continues to be your resource as you take on projects in your neighborhood. This department aims to further connect neighborhoods and advance inclusion in our community by building partnerships and uniting people.
